Wk of Jun 4--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

Hi everyone. It seems like forever since I have been able to post on here. I had my first running group run last week and tomorrow is my second try at it. It went OK last week, but only 6 people showed for some reason and no one chatted with me (I tried). They were into their "pairs friends". Sooo, I will give it another shot tomorrow night. Hopefully someone will want to be more social and not so snooty. I am a little concerned because the pace last week was way faster than I am used to and tomorrow we run longer. YIKES, and I haven't had time to put in a quality run. I may be the "heavy breather" just trying to keep up.

I have to back track and catch up on the posts. And I still need to get in my shirt order. I need 5 since DH and in-laws are coming. My girls are coming also, but the shirts aren't small enough for them. They are doing the kids race so I will get them some other kind of shirt.

Happy running...

Hello WISH buddies!!!! Can you tell I'm in a chipper mood? 12 hrs from right now I will be leaving for WDW :cool1:  We are staying 3 nights at POP & then 5 at CSR :Pinkbounc Never been to CSR, kids are going to love the pool Which is good since I will have them by myself while DH is in meetings all day. But I have them all day at home anyway, so I would much rather entertain them there! We are also going to see the Cars movie at DTD one day.

I am not ready for the full to be 50% full. I am not ready to make that decision yet. If I didn't have issues with my feet/ankles I would have already signed up. I'm not sure they are willing to carry me that far.

Colleen-I feel your pain! It's a tough decision. But if you do sign up for the Goofy you could decide to do just one or the other later (although you pay a big chunk in registration fees ) I didn't know you were considering Goofy. That's awesome. It would be cool walking around with all those medals. You'd look like Mr. T .

Christa-glad you got some running buddies again! What was Bree thinking starting a family when you needed her to train with :confused3 DH wont let me get clippless pedals. I'm not the most coordinated person so he is afraid I would kill myself. It will take alot more time on the bike to convince him I can do it. But I think they do help with speed/ ease of pedaling alot.

Krista-Yep, DH work said he had to go to WDW. And you know I wasnt about to let him leave us behind. Glad your knee is doing better. Have fun in DC I love that city too!

Well guys that's all from me until the 16th. Good luck with everyone's injuries and when you see me again I will be in full DL training mode :Pinkbounc

<========(Lily) Comes running in slipping and sliding.

Hi WISH Team!

Scott, Thanks for the thread you posted about the race registration info. I've registered. (I'm not certain I will be able to go, but I figured if I didn't register I would not have any option.)

Dave, I am sorry to hear of your problem. I WISH I could put a string on ya to keep you slowed up a bit. Please take it easy and heal up.
pixiedust: for smooth recovery.

Sunny, pixiedust: for your smooth recovery.

Everyone, pixiedust: just because.

Cam, great photos.

In response to the question posed, would I do Goofy again? Yes. I also concur with every response given.

For me, I am definitely not in it for any PR. I am thoroughly in this for the opportunity to participate. If you train soundly now, you WILL finish. Don't overtrain though. What I did was get that base in and ease up on the speed/strength training when the "real" training weeks began. (I don't mean discontinue--just ease up.) If you are going for speed, well, I cannot advise. I do think that requires a bigger base or background doing the events for longer than this year as well as consistent training. I can see improvement through consistency. There is a point that we all reach, whatever that is where we must decide what value speed (PR) holds. My medals look and feel just as good to me as those earned by others at whatever ability they chose to pursue. Good luck with the decision.

I'm still dealing with tons here, medical is easing up...work is not.

Keep on keepin' on everyone. You are doing great.
:cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2:

Good Morning TEAM: :surfweb:

Yahoo Lily!!!! :cool1: :cool1: :goofy: :goofy: :goofy: :goofy: I'm so glad you're signed up and won't get blocked out.

OK, I had my PT appointment yesterday afternoon and it was really good. I think I've lucked out with a really good PT. He is a runner too so that helps. Anyhow, we iced my shins, and he listened to my trouble. He gave me some more exercises to strengthen my ankles and lower legs, and then he put me on stim. OK, I never had this before. He hooked up electrodes to my lower legs, and they run a small electrical current through my legs. It kind of feels like a tingling, but if they turn it up too high your toes will start to twitch and your ankle will jerk. Anyhow, this evidently gets the blood flowing to my lower leg muscles, and then they put ice packs on top to vasoconstrict. So you have more blood flowing through smaller vessels meaning the blood flows fast and supposedly flushes out all of the inflammatory agents. They did that for 15 min and afterwards my limping was gone. It was the best I felt for a while. I was pain free for a couple of hours. It was great. Anyhow, he said I could still exercise as I was comfortable. He said do the elliptical for a while and if I'm feeling good then jump on the treadmill for a mile. Then get off the treadmill and back to the elliptical. Definitely keep the exercise under the threshold that starts the irritation. Keep your fingers crossed. I will take it easy to try to get these shins healed up, but I do want to try to keep exercising so I don't lose all my conditioning.

Ok, I guess it's official. I am a runner/walker/wogger. ;)

Last night my toe felt funny. Not bad, just like my toenail kept getting caught on my sheets or something. So, this morning (if 2:45am when I get up for work is morning) I reach down to my foot since it feels like something is wrapped around my toe. The sort of feeling you might have when you have a hole in your sock. (apologizing if this is TMI) My toenail is hanging by a thread!!! :scared1:

Now, I know I've read about this happening on here before. Is it going to come back??? I thought this wasn't going to happen to me since the Minnie 15k was a month ago, and I haven't exercised much at all since then. We are going to Ocean City, MD in 2 weeks! I just bought a bunch of new capris & sandals for goodness sake! I am really not that vain, just self-conscious.

I guess this is what I get for painting my toenails on Monday, rather than going out for a run. :lmao:

I plan on using everything I learned from last year's Goofy and using it to help me this time around. Will my times improve (2:28 1/2 and 6:30ish full)? Probably, but that is not why I am going back. In my opinion, Disney is not the place to try and PR. There is just too much to see and so many people to interact with that a PR just is not my goal. Better times will only be the icing on the cake. Once again, the goal is simply to finish and have the energy to spend a few days in the parks afterward.
Paul
Colleen - I totally agree with you Paul! WDW is a fun race...not one to PR. Too much to see, and to many people to interact with. If you really want a PR it is better to choose a smaller race. Not that I haven't PRed. My 2nd try at WDW marathon was a full 20 min faster than my 1st....but I always get caught up in the fun an just have a blast.
I am not doing Goofy this year, but not b/c I don't want to. My sweet DH LOVEs WDW, but is just not interested in doing the training and running of the race. We may not even do the full. I have come to terms with that...but only b/c I have other races in mind.
If there is even a slight chance you may want to do Goofy, sign up..it is fun and very doable if you train well. I really feel like this was the easiest race I have ever run! I did not try to PR, but I felt so good at the full, I think I could have if I wanted to.

Kristi - COOL! A lost toenail...DH lost his after WDW and it is growing back! :lmao:

Dave - So glad the PT went well! :cheer2:

Tiff - I want to go to WDW! Have lots of fun! :dance3:

I'm glad you think it's cool! OMG! I am going to be so self-consious this summer in sandals. But what can you do, right?

Since you are the Evil Queen, I think I am going to name myself the Drama Queen! :teeth:

Paul, Christa, Sara, MelR, Lily, thanks SO MUCH for your responses. I really needed to be brought back to earth about this marathoning thing. I have been competitive my whole life, but now that I am... ahem...40+, I have to be realistic and just enjoy my marathoning experience. After all, I want to be running in another 20 years.

Thanks again for your words of wisdom.

Lily, good for you signing up. Which race did you choose?

Colleen

Well, I got home late from work last night. I ate, read the girls stories and put them to bed... then I went out for a short wog before dark. It was just 30 minutes, but at least it was something. Tonight is my running group and after last nights wog I decided to take it slow and easy and if I fall behind, well so be it. Apparently someone is bringing a jogging stoller, so I am sure she won't be jogging too fast if she has to push that... right???

Kristi - I lost both big toenails a yr. and 1/2 ago and I learned quickly that you can paint that hard nail bed skin that is there where the nail was. That really helps. I also heard that they can give you a fake one if you get a pedicure, but I have never had a pedicure, so I was too embarrassed to go after my feet looked so bad. Way to go tuff stuff!

Someone here at work was teasing me - telling me to paint that toe as if it had a nail. Cool to know that would really work! I was thinking it would get infected or something. I was debating (before all this) on getting a pedicure before our trip to the beach, but decided not to due to $$$. Maybe I should call the salon and ask. If they can give me a fake nail, I just might do it now.

Ugh. I am a slug. A sloth. I feel horrible. :sad2:

Wed is a rest day, so I rested. But then last night we went out (See OT below) and stayed out waaay too late, and ate waaaay too much. This morning the alarm went off and I just got up, turned it off, and went back to bed. No training. Ugh. Boy that makes me mad! :furious: But I was so tired and really not feeling too good from the gorging last night.

However, tomorrow is another day. I will rise and shine with a renewed enthusiasm, get on that TM and make up for lost time. Then, park myself in front of the TV :happytv: with breakfast and watch Kenny Chesney on Good Morning America. :p

Dave - I'm so glad you got a PT who is a runner. :thumbsup2 I think that will make all the difference in the world! I too had stim when I was in PT after my knee surgery last fall. At first it felt so weird but then it made my knee feel so much better. Strange, but it works!

Kristi - Ewwwwwwwww!

:offtopic: Last night we went out with my in-laws on account of tomorrow is our first anniversary. After my MIL's speech about how she is not giving us any more presents because she's cleaning out her house so her sons won't have to do it after she's gone and she's sure we don't want to fill our house up with things that someone will just have to clear out after we are gone...she gives us our gift. A cat garden statue. But wait! She says it's not for the garden. It's a headstone for when we bury our cat.

Excuse me but THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH OUR CAT! :furious:

Nothing says "Congratulations on One Year of Wedding Bliss" like a grave marker.

Judy

Thanks everyone for the well-WISHes :) I haven't improved yet :confused3

Jen-- keep going, when they get used to seeing you every week they'll start talking to you.

Kristi-- congrats on the toe nail. I've been thinking how ugly my "normal pink/white" toe nail looks. I got so used to it being black or missing.

Tiffj-- :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc Have a blast and stay chipper!

Speedy-- I can't believe you missed JB's Goofy report. I'm glad I retrieved my RW to be of assistance.

Judy-- Wow, your MIL sounds like Raymond's mom :rotfl:

Sunny

First off let me send pixiedust: to all those who are hurting and :cheer2: to all those who are continuing to put their steps in.

Now, I am walking the full in January and I am wondering if any WISHers have done that before. I am absolutely determined to not be swept and I was looking for any advice from my fellow teammates.

I am currently in week 5 of MFM training for the Chicago half, and after that I am doing the DL half in Sept. I will be following the MFM walking program for the full. I guess I was hoping for someone who has been there and done that to reassure me that I am not

Also, I know I am getting way ahead of myself, but, hmm, how can I put this??? I am very, very fond of flushing toilets. There I've said it! I did use the port-o-pot before the start of the half, but then I waited until MK and used the restroom by the Diamond Shoe Review. So I was hoping that a marathon vet could give me a heads up on the availability of "real" bathrooms during the full.

The half is 212 days from today and the full is ONLY 213 days away. :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

Hi All....Just a quick drive by.... :drive:

:grouphug: and pixiedust: to those suffering with injuries.

:tinker: Good Luck to those in races and/or events this weekend.

I started following "couch to 5k" last week. I am doing that in addition to still going to the track at night with DH & friends. I really wanted to increase my running to 4 or 5 minutes without taking a 1/2 hour to recover. Tomorrow morning I will complete Week 2 / Day 3 of Couch to 5k. So far it feels pretty good. I have also decide to do some 5k's. The local county running club has a summer series. 3 Tuesday nights in July & 1 in August. It is a 5k in a park. Only costs $5 per night & if you do at least 3 races you get a t-shirt. Figure that might be a good way to start. I also am going to do the Batsto Pig Iron 5k on August 13th at Historic Batsto Village in Wharton State Forest, NJ

I'll try and catch up more later.

Judy, we had the same wedding cake topper and we weren't even married at the World. We found it at the Disney Store in the Mall of America (8 years ago). Loved your story. If I could do it all over again, it would be like that!

I'd have to dig out the pictures, but our wedding cake topper was Cindy's castle that we bought on Main Street. We also had a plastic coach and I believe the prince and Cindy were on the cake. Our cake was 3 tiers that were separated on individual pedestals, so we had a little something on each one.

Judy...loved your story! Makes me want to do our 10-year vow renewal at WL!

You may need to add me to the IR list :guilty: I did day 2 of the walk to run program on the Health website yesterday. Still couldn't manage to complete 30 min at R4/W2...felt incredibly out of shape. I tried to really cut back since the Minnie to help heal my foot, but it seems that's not to be. My foot was bugging me a little after the run, but not awful until...I went to the grocery store. I stood up on my toes to reach for something on the top shelf and my right calf seized up! It was like a fist clamping down in my leg. I iced my foot and leg when I got home, but today is the worst the foot has been. I actually made a podiatry appt for next week :sad1: I'm going to try switching to a new pair of ASICs that I've had in the closet...both pairs I'm using now have less than 300 miles on them, but over 200, so maybe the cushion is just gone. Please tell me y'all think a new pair of shoes will solve this problem ::yes:: I'd be willing to go buy a totally different brand/style if anyone thinks that will help
