Wk of July 29--WISH Walking/Running Club

evening team

well my Garmin came!! today i took her out for our first of many journeys and logged in 5.6 miles. i do have a few questions if I may....

my pace was alllllll over the place? is that normal? do i just need to not look at it so often?

do you all have any of the pre-programmed workouts that you like?

i can't chat....any tips are welcomed :teeth:

ohMom - there are a few different paces you can look at and I believe the default out of the box is an instant pace, and yes, it is all over the place! You can swap it out to read average pace for the entire run which is much nicer! There is also an average pace for the lap that you can look at too. Good luck!

OK, super quick drive by. Maggie is out of the hospital after being severely dehydrated when she went in (she couldn't keep water down, so I'm not surprised). Still not sure quite what caused it, but she is going in for an abdominal ultrasound tomorrow to see if she has something hanging out in her stomach. It is actually a good thing she was ill and had to go to the vet - they found out she had a urinary tract infection, and if you don't catch those it can be fatal...

I got my 9 miles in yesterday although it wound up being more like 9.45 - will explain more later...

Dave -- great pix! THanks for sharing. Man, the time on that finish clock is so impressive. :woohoo: Maybe someday for me if I work my butt off! ;)

Leana and Lily -- sending pixiedust: for your furbabies.

Congrats to everyone on the awesome miles this weekend. My 12 on Saturday left me so sore and I am still not recovered. I think it didn't help that I came right to work afterwards and got my shower here, rather thanb going home and taking a cool bath before sitting at my desk for 5 hours. whoops!

leana -- yes! that is it! thank you for the tip i'm going to change that default! ok you all are going to laugh at me, i had a newbie blonde Garmin moment. i was so excited, i had plugged in my interval workout for this week -- well after standing in my driveway for 3 mins trying to 'find' the workout in my watch-thingie i decided to go back in and read the instructions. which i did..and headed out...now starting 5-6 mins later than anticipated which you all know what i mean when you just want to get going. so then i start it and go....then look at it.....look again....and realize i have set the intervals for hours and not minutes! urgh!! so i had to quickly customize off the preprogrammed interval workouts (that's where the first few minutes of navigating helped me out :teeth:) and just go with it. i really liked it....i need to be more comfortable reading and utilizing the software results. can i customize what i see and don't see. like "laps" i don't really count laps so can i take that out?

i was disappointed that my 4 min pace was slower than i thought i had been going, this is probably why i'm not losing weight. but a couple of my 1 min intervals rocked :rockband: one was a 13:21 pace

i'm doing intervals for the cardio/fat burning benefit -- but will this help my settle out my pace and eventually speed up?

dave -- great pics!

I haven't posted here in what seems like forever, which it probably has been. I have been running even if things have been a little too crazy to post here! I hope you're all doing well.

Last week I was on vacation and tried running the beach one day instead of a usual street run, fun but challenging. I also got massive amounts of swimming in and some soccer too.

While I was away my grandfather was hospitalized and while he is out now my aunts and uncles have to take turns staying with him. He hurt his ankle when he got home so he needs someone there to help him out. I also came home to find out my dog isn't doing well, he's barely a year old. My mom is going to take him to the Vet. He seems to be moving his back legs carefully and he gnawed the skin on his legs raw. (we've been putting stuff on it and it seems to be getting better) Add to that the cold I got when I got home and I'm wishing I was still on vacation. Let's keep our fingers crossed the rest of the week goes better.

I promise that tomorrow I'll have more of a workout related post although I'll probably only walk due to the cold settling in my chest. But I'll try to catch up with everyone here soon.

Okay, I have A LOT to catch up on! I am going to TRY to do my best. I make no promises though. :) My birthday was great, Stephen arranged for my parents and 1 of my sisters (I have 4 total) and for his parents and sister and family to come over for the evening of my birthday. I was forbidden to come home until at least 6:30, I pulled into the driveway at 6:40, nobody else got there until after 7:00!!! :lmao: It was okay as it gave me time to get cleaned up a little bit; I stopped at the gym and ran 3 miles on my way home. I got lots of cool running/biking stuff; my favorite though is a pair of Specialized cycling shoes so I can clip in when I do the spinning classes.

Training for Columbus is going pretty good. I did a 10 miler this past Saturday, it took me about 2 hours to run, but I really slowed my pace down plus I started at noon, so I was running in the heat of the day. I haven’t run with my inserts in 2 weeks and (knock on wood) my legs are feeling great. No more shin/calf/Achilles tendon pain at all. My IT band seems to be holding up (another reason I slow my pace on lr’s), so that’s good news.

Cam and Howard—I’m glad you guys had such a great time on your cruise!!!! Those pictures are gorgeous! I’m a big fan of Port Orleans French Quarter too. I don’t really care for Riverside, but we only stayed there for 1 night, so I don’t think we were given the best location. I love the picture of the two of you, you both look absolutely fabulous!

Carrie—Congrats on the new job!!!! That sounds so exciting!!!! How is Scott doing? Recovering okay?

Kristi—So, does Johnny recognize you now or what?? ;)

Leana—:wizard: :wizard: to Miss Maggie!!!! I hope she is feeling better today!

SW Dave—Good luck with the marathon decision. I really hope you and your family are able to make the trip. Stephen just signed up on Saturday, so we are officially there!!

Colleen—I am so jealous that you get to go to WDW next week!!! My mom and my nephew are leaving Wednesday morning. I so wish I had some extra vacation time so I could go with them!!! Great 14 mile run!!! Wow, what plan are you doing? I’m running Columbus the weekend before MCM and I’m only up to 12 this weekend.

Mel—I can’t be mad at you for not making ToT as I don’t think Stephen and I can make CDC. :guilty: We can’t find a kennel for Hines (the kennels we prefer are all booked) and you how neurotic I am about him, I can’t leave him just anywhere. Plus, Stephen and I are both afraid that we’ll both be tempted to race it and not treat it as a training run. But we’ll definitely be at WDW in January!!! Oh, I’ve been dying to say this since February—ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL!!!!! :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2:

Vic—:wizard: for the dog bite!!!!!

Renee—There is nothing better in the world than getting new running shoes!!!! I hope they work out for you!

Jackie—:wizard: :wizard: for your daughter!!!!!! I hope she feeling much better today! Congrats on the 15 miler! You have to find a marathon this fall/early winter; you are SO ready for 26.2 miles.

Kathy—I love that picture of Lynne!!!!

Dana—Don’t you love how “rest” days really aren’t that restful!!!!! Congrats on signing up for the full!

Minnie—So glad that everything worked out with your DF’s job! What a relief!! :offtopic: , I love your dining report!!

Jen—Congrats on signing up for the full!! I can’t wait to cheer everyone on!!!! I hope life starts to settle down for you soon and you are able to get some peace. By the way, how’s DH’s knee? Oh, and are they holding raw meat in that rump roast picture???? :scared: :scared: :scared:

Stephanie—Your weekend sounded nice!!!! I can’t believe you actually contemplated running 10 miles on a hotel TM! You are officially not right!!! Good luck on your 10 miler today!!

FL Bill—Sorry the storms are wreaking havoc on your training!!!!! Is Billy feeling better now? Sorry about the tick infestation!!!! You just reminded me, it’s about time for Hines’ next flea preventative dosage.

Tricia—Congrats on your 5K!!! That’s a great time!!!! :woohoo:

Sorry to all I missed, but I have to get back to work. Hopefully I’ll talk to you all soon.

Hey Team, it's me, Gimpy!

I've been reading but I am unworthy of posting. However, I am just back from the doctors office. Good news and bad news.

The good news is he took the stitches out and I am progressing nicely. :thumbsup2

The bad news is I still can't train for three more weeks. :scared1:

Looks like my ToT pace will be just ahead of the sweepers. Well, I look at it this way. If I set the bar really really low this year, I will have a better chance of improving my time next year! :yay:

Thanks to everyone for posting such great pictures. :goodvibes

But Cam, I just have to say...you're killing me. I'm so ready to change our four day to a seven day. :rolleyes1

Oh and MSDave, the Empire State Games are going on all around here! Very exciting! P.S. I can now speak from Minnie experience, a solo trip is FABULOUS!!! I highly recommend it.

Hi Krista,

Good to hear from you, we are actually going to Disney on Wednesday too! I am using the FIRST, three day a week training plan, where you run "quality" runs all the time, (speedwork, tempo and then the LR) and then crosstrain hard two other days. DH used it when he qualified for Boston. So I am hoping I can bring in a PR at MCM. I was suppose to run 13, but I thought I would do one more since I probably won't get anything longer than 6 miles in Disney this weekend. Say hi to Steve for me!

Hi Gimpy, don't worry those 3 weeks will fly by and you will be right back on that horse or um, road!

Cam, great job on your LR, no wonder you hurt a bit today after sitting at the desk for hours.

Beth, you got 10 miles in. That's great! So what if it was suppose to be 14, those things happen.

Megan, hope your grandfather is on the mend.

Leana, Megan and Lily, take care of those furbabies.

Shan, great pace on the track. DH keeps telling me I should hit the high school track too. We will see when the kiddos are back in school.

Tricia, I am so glad you weren't injured in your treadmill incident. That was scary.

Stephanie, welcome back from the Ozarks! Lucky you, more DVC! My DH just won't go for it. Something about Disney getting too much of our money already...

Bill, thanks for the DVC info. An acquaintance here in my hometown own and she was talking briefly about renting, but I don't know her well enough to ask more detailed questions.

Kathy, love the picture of Lynne.

I thought you guys would get a kick out of this. I had a racing dream the other night. It was only the 5K in AK (I'm registered for this year). I guess it was because I've been using the map of the race while I'm on the TM, as I go through the park & see the sights in my mind.

Well, in my dream, I was doing good, but then for some reason I saw my family, and decided to get in line with them at the Nemo show in AK. I got into the theater, and looked at my watch, it was at 46 minutes! I was like, Oh my word, I've got to get going! So I got out, walked to the finish line, and they were closing things up! I woke up right then, freaked out!

Meghan- I got the Trigger Point Therapy Workbook and have been working on some spots. Do you have any soreness the next day on the spots you work on?

Cam- was it you that has read the Chi Running book? I was looking over some of the ideas from they website, and on my walk today, I worked hard on posture and using the core. It felt good! Also- great pics! We'll be at POR for RFTT and I want to get some miles in on those trails for the first part of the trip (then it will be taper right? :)

Kristi- great pics of you & your boys!

Shan- great pace!

Beth- when I started doing longer walks for the Minnie 15K, it really messed with my mind, esp since I was doing the training on the TM. It sometimes a mental hurdle to get over to get past what you've already done. But you'll feel great when you push it over that hurdle. I hope you find something that works for you!

Ohmom- have fun with your Garmin. I haven't bit the bullet & got one yet! :rotfl2: on the fun getting it to work!

Gimpy- any pace you get for the 13K or the 6.5K will be a PR, right, since I'm pretty sure you've never raced those distances. That's what's good about unusual distances! :)

Judy -- do NOT do anything your doctor hasn't sanctioned. Letting your foot heal completely is all that matters right now. Remember, ToT is all about fun!

Stacey -- I think it was Anne's husband who uses the Chi running book and maybe Mel. I keep meaning to get it and read it but havent' gotten around to it yet.

Shan -- how cool that when you got your Nike+ calibrated, you found out your pace was even better. :woohoo:

Colleen -- Have a great time!

Krista -- what's this? We aren't going to see you at CDC? :sad1: I was really looking forward to that. I can definitely understand, though, that you need to be sure Hines is well cared-for.

Sorry guys, fighting a horrible migraine so my brain is mush. Back later to really catch up!

Oh, how right you are Westcliffemom! I believe alot of my problem is mental....it always seems like there is something else going on to hold me back. My marathon training is now at distances I haven't covered yet. I need to get my head in the game! Might take longer than I have though :confused3

I am really going to get things together this week. I need to have at least 35 miles in by next Sunday..... then I will feel better!

Beth

Hey guys! Bet you had forgotten I existed, huh? I have been avoiding posting the past week or so because I've been gone from the weekly thread for so long and I feel that my first post back should be to catch up with everyone, welcome all the new people, etc. So since I realized that would take me approx 3-4 years to complete based on the number of posts that I've missed, I've re-aligned my goals and decided to just post and say SORRY FOR BEING AWAY SO LONG. I did get a chance today over lunch to read the first 4 pages of this week's thread, and I'm going to try to catch up with you guys a little bit better.

So can I come back? Am I disowned forever?? :sad2:

Work's been crazy, just now letting up a bit. In spite of that, training's actually been going really well. I recovered from my sprained ankle episode of 6 or 7 weeks ago and I think I'm back into the full swing of training for Columbus on October. I got 31 miles in this past week and I don't feel too much worse for it, so I guess that's a good thing.

As Krista said, we probably won't be able to make the CDC in two weeks. :sad1: We can't find a good place to leave Hines and just a ton of other stuff that's going on during or around that weekend is making it not too feasible for us to be there. But we'll be with you guys in spirit!

But on the bright side, I finally got my butt in gear and registered for the marathon in January. So Krista and I will definitely be with you guys that weekend.

Glad to see everyone's doing well, and congrats to all the LRs and those who raced this weekend! I'll talk to you guys soon (and by soon, I really do mean sooner than 3 or 4 weeks from now). :)

Steve

Hello everyone,
I don't know if you remember me because I have been MIA for the past few months. Since the end of may, my life has been consumed with traveling, moving (our business and relocating a daughter to another state), and houseguests for the past 3 weeks (3 different sets, thank God!). My training really suffered during May and June, but I resolved to get back on track during July and for the most part, was pretty good about it. I'm basically a walker and so I have posted a bit on Dave's walking tip thread, but would like to get back here also. You guys are all so good about commenting to each person individually and I have alot of trouble keeping up with that. I hate to think I'm offending people by not commenting on their posts.
Anyway, I just got a Garmin, so I look forward to training with that. It just arrived this weekend and looks a little complicated so I guess I really need to read the manual first! My next event will be the T of T 13 K.....I am so looking forward to that! Eight days later, I'll be doing the City of Oaks half-Marathon.....I think some other DISers are doing that one also (Jackie, did you sign up?). Then it's the biggie in '08.....the full Mickey! I ordered my WISH shirts and am starting to get very excited. Right now I'm training up to 14 miles and hope to gradually add up to 20-22. Since I'm a walker, the biggest problem is finding the TIME!
Cam: Glad you enjoyed your cruise! I was on the inaugaral Med cruise in May
and it was awesome. the only downside was that we spent so much time OFF the ship in ports, it didn't really feel like a cruise......and I so missed going to Castaway Cay!
Dave: the photos are great.....the links on this thread worked!
It's good to be back!

On the road again tomorrow for a couple of days. You guys behave yourselves. I'll be checking. :)

Hey everyone-

Random thoughts: Ok, so I was using Leanna's training plan and I could have sworn I saw 7 miles for the weekend. I did my 7 miles (and it was a character building 7, involving trying to talk to DH on my cell phone on the TM- I can barely handle my water bottle on the TM so this was a challenge!) Then I come back and realize I should have done 9 miles! I guess I can take comfort in knowing that I didn't intend to cheat... (and what was I thinking doing workout girl's plan, anyway?!:rotfl: )

Chi running- if someone could explain it, that'd be great. I have the book, but I can never remember anything beyond stand up straight and then lean forward- something to do with gravity helping... I'm guessing there's more to it...

Beth- check it out- it's all a matter of perspective. The longest I've run so far in my marathon training (I'm not counting Minnie training), is the 7 miles from yesterday. So, you're disappointed with your distance, while I'm totally impressed. :cool1:

Cam- your pictures made me happy. We stayed at POR for Minnie. Your trip sounded fun. I have yet to run while on vacation- way to go keeping up the miles!

Westcliffemom- love the dream! I always have the "can't find the start or the entrance to the park" type anxiety dreams. It's just like you were getting your money's worth at Disney-- a little racing, a little watching shows... :rotfl:

Dave- loved the pictures.

Hey to everyone else- happy running or resting today!

Jen in GA

No running today. Yesterday I started noticing that it was VERY warm in the house. I looked at the thermostat and it said 85!! But since it was Sunday, and we had plans to be somewhere we decided to suffer through the night, and call the warranty guy this morning. Now the AC people are telling us they can't make it until tomorrow, and once again it is 85 in the house. I have ever fan in the place on HI. I do have some good news though... I forgot to check the mail on Saturday so yesterday I decided to check it. In the mailbox was this pretty good sized thick envelope, but I couldn't tell who it was from. I opened it to find my Disney Champion Chip!! WooHoo!! The first of many things (hopefully) to come to keep me motivated in my training!!

Dana

I've been posting mostly on the walking thread and just lurking here. I have been staying on my training schedule. But the heat kills me with doing LW. This past Sat I thought I was going to die doing my 10 mile LW. I certainly hope that this year at Disney it is not 80 plus degrees or I will just melt away and never make it to the finish line.

Cam--- I love POFQ and we are staying there for TOT weekend. They do have wonderful paths around the PO resorts. Glad you had a wonderful vacation.

Dave--- Great pictures.

Welcome to Beth :cheer2: I get to welcome her everyday at work as she is my coworker. We can whine together about all our aches and pains and terrible training runs/walks. We share our misery.

Jeanne--- Glad you got your Garmin. I would have to have one of my children show me how to use it.

Lunch over back to work.

Nancy

Creativebeth: Hi...... and welcome! You're Nancy's friend , right? We met at the Allentown HM. Glad to see you posting here.

Jeanne

Hi everyone,
I've been so out of the loop. I haven't even been lurking. I have no excuse except that it's been a very odd summer. As you know, DH has been on a quasi-sabbatical in CO. That means I've been dealing with the home front. Now you would think that a reasonably intellegent, forty-something year-old with a Master's degree would be able to take care of a home, by herself, for 7 weeks. Nope! Not even close.

First, there was the toilet. It was leaking, admittedly before DH left. He gallently tried fixing it but, alas, I had to call in a plumber. He said there was a hairline fracture and hence we needed a new toilet. I was rather hoping that I could just get a new tank. Which I could, if it was still made. Do you think that would be the case? Of course not! The model is no longer made (it's only 7 years old, for crying' out loud) and the newer model is not interchangable. $400 later, we have a new toilet ordered. Due in this week.

Second, the stupid checkbook wouldn't balance. We're not talkin' that is was off by a few pennies. That I could live with and just adjust for. Nope--it was off by $76.10! I looked and looked but couldn't find it. When I sent it to DH, he found it, at least most of it, inside of 5 minutes.

Then there are the trees. There is a foresty area between our house and our neighbors. They want to do some landscaping and have been contacting outfits to render opinions on whether these should come down or just be trimmed. We're talkin' 80 foot trees and higher. We don't know whether they are on our property or theirs and the neighbor is being so very nice about keeping us informed but I've been getting people to come out and look at them. Have to be at home to show them.

Then there is the noise that one of the cars is making. Can't describe it. Can't predict it. It's just there.

And the last straw was this past Friday. I was loading the car to take the recycles in when there, in the garden was a DEAD BUNNY!!!!! Ew, ew, ew!! Where is a man when you need one!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Cam, Howard: welcome back! I saw the pictures and they are wonderful!

Judy: yea on getting the stitches out!! Do what the doctor says and wait to start training again. We don't want you to hurt yourself again!

Dana: hope you get some relief from the heat soon! Put a block of ice in front of the fan--that should help cool it off!

Big Vic: we'll miss you! Have a good trip.

jeanneg: welcome back--you're always welcome. Let us know how the training is coming along!

Steve: welcome back to you too! I've been MIA for a couple weeks too. LTO, I guess is the best way to put it (see above).

westcliffemom: DH uses the route maps to train also. He swears by it, helps him to focus.

aladdinsgirl: sounds like the b-day was delightful! Good luck with the next race.

I have been training. Ran 55 minutes this weekend in such lovely, what had to be 125% humidity! Lord love it. But, I was outside and not on the dreaded TM. I ran very well, a bit too fast during the first half. I'll be in CO later this week for 10 days. DH has me ready to run with the running club there. Um, I hope I'm up for this!!
