Wk of Jul 30--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

Christa, Hope you feel better real soon, glad you got yourself to the doc for treatment.

Dave, sorry about losing that post. It’s happened so many times I’ve tried to get into the habit of either composing in Word or copy all b4 submitting just in case. I just hate when that happens.

Amy, Yeah, I know many of us would like to be out and just enjoying our LRs. This heat has everyone slogging. This makes you stronger. Yes, I keep telling myself that but it is difficult for me to feel it too.

Kelley, PD to you re: the kids. I’m sure they are managing, but that won’t keep you from worrying. It’s what Moms do!

Tiff, glad the birthday fairy saw fit to grant your wish and that you enjoyed the weekend.

Krista, good to hear you are managing to get in those steps. 22 more days you say! Eek is right! Drink more water during the day. Stretch lots. My DB is a distance runner and has 2 dogs who go with him on the trail for his LRs (15 miles on some days). They even knew that LRs were continuous movement and no potty stops until after. Now it is sad b/c his older is too old to make more than 5-6 miles. His are bigger mixed breed and he got out 6 miles and had to carry one home since she couldn’t make it back. She still goes on though and we think that’s what has been keeping her “young.” I’ve seen runners with dogs in the jogging strollers around her too. I’d love to have a “doggy” jog stroller. I out distance run my 2 little ones. Build Hines up and he will be a great running companion. Just not in this heat.

Kristi, so sorry to hear of your sad news. Prayers to all as everyone goes through the most difficult time. Parents make it through the years as we do…worrying and praying. My 88 y/o Mom says she still does. I tell my family it’s my job and I do it well!

MelR, sounds like a fun weekend especially that you didn’t have to worry much about food stuff so had time to enjoy and relax. Yeah, all that work you did—relax, sure that’s it.

Sara, glad that you had a good training run and sorry about your DH/s experience. This heat is just sapping everyone for sure. It is good that you are noticing a difference with that Pilates and Yoga. I’m getting myself back to it all and actually look forward to my Pilates set today.

Mike, that’s ok to not reply. Please continue to let us know how you are progressing though. Enjoy your week in the World! Smart choice with the running this weekend.

Judy, PD for the mare. Hope you can get her through these days. As far as the MfM plan. I’d agree, don’t go back. Continue from where you are until you fit in according to the plan. Your mid weeks are timed so that is where you can “ramp” up your training a bit for the upcoming increase in LRs. Keep working on those mid week times.

Craig, well said. Very well said.

Hi all!! :wave2:

I'm back from my very long weekend of golf. Ended up playing 36 on Friday and 18 on Saturday because of some nasty weather scheduled for Sunday. (Turned out to be a good plan). Anyhow, I only got one 2 mile run in over the weekend. Plans to run when I got home yesterday were dashed after a big thunderstorm rolled through right after we got into the driveway. Oh well. The high temp here is supposed to reach 97, so I'm not too sure about today either. :guilty:

Catching up..

Kristi-- :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug:

Note to Self-- I must throw out that shirt in Carrie's pic! I look huge!! At least 50 pounds heavier than I actually am. Yikes!

Carrie-- Great job on the race! :thumbsup2 I recognized every one of those pics...definately not a fun course for sure. So the million dollar questions... Was it as slower-runner unfriendly as it sounded and would you do it again next year??

Jodi-- I think your pace idea sounds good. There would be enough play in those time to be able to stop for pics and everything and if you wanted to speed up or slow down, you probably could.

Judy-- It does make some sense, but if you are strictly running/walking on the treadmill now, I might follow the plan closely when you first get out on the road for a week or two and re-evaluate. If you are doing lots of work on the road already, I say go for it.

ETA: Folks on the Fence!: The WDW Marathon website now shows that the full is at 75% capacity and the half is at 95% capacity. Send those entries in!!

OK, this week is totally nuts for me. I actually am taking a health and safety day tomorrow-- I think I will be finishing my January trip report. :rotfl: Procrastiate? Me? No!!! :teeth:

Happy training all!
Kevin :earsboy:

Christa - Hope you're feeling better today. Strep can really take ya down.

Kristi - I'm so sorry to hear about the loss in your family. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this time.

Craig - Thanks for the reminding words of wisdom. With 3 kids, the oldest 11, I hope I can give them the information, understanding and love they need to go out and make good decisions.

Last week I had a good training week. Saturday I got in 10 miles @ about 11:30 mm pace. That is good for me, especially since it was only my 2nd LR. It felt good except mile 8 which was a little tough. Thankfully I have the WISH team to keep me motivated! My DH is traveling all this week so training will be a little more difficult. I hope to get in 3 SRs and 1 LR again on Saturday.

Surprisingly my hip pain has completely gone away, just as fast as it started. I had pain on Monday when I did my 10K. I had been favoring it, changing my gait to ease the pain. Monday night I decided to start walking normally again and over the past week it seems to have healed. I'm glad I learned the stretching lesson early in my training and won't slack on that again! I think I will loose the middle toe nail on both feet even though my shoes are properly fitted. I've been told to use duct tape before my LR. My ankle pain has also subsided, probably due to the new shoes.

The running bug has hit me hard and I look forward to getting out there each day and feel bad when I can't run. Never would have thought that would happen...

Train carefully WISH team!

Sonya

Kristi- :grouphug: for your family. Sending :wizard: to help you through the funeral. It will be a heartwrencher for sure.

Kevin- You do not look fat in that photo. You look great, and Carrie and I can attest that you are not overweight. It was so great to meet you in person. I look forward to seeing you again in January.

AmyBeth-I forgot you were in New Jersey. I was in Newark last week, and I will be back in Newark for a meeting next Monday. Boy was it hot up there. I thought I would escape the heat by heading north. Not so.

I finally got my rear in gear today and went to the gym. Yay me! :cheer2: I did run3/walk2 for 3.32 miles. It felt great. I actually may be ready to increase the running. (Did I just say that?) I have to travel on Wednesday-Friday for work. I am staying at the Four Seasons in Austin. Tough job but someone has to do it. As a treat, I scheduled a swedish massage for Thursday afternoon in the spa. Only 16 more days until the twins start kindergarten and my oldest starts 3rd grade. My DH (who is a stay-at-home dad for those who don't know) is going to be acting something like this on the first day of school :cool1: :woohoo: :dance3: He's already got a tee time for that day.

Kristi - :grouphug: I am so sorry. I must admit, that may be one of the hundreds of reasons that I don't have kids. I think faith helps most. WIll say prayers for your family.

Jodi - Plenty of time for pics with that pace!!!! WTG!

Kevin - Someone finished with a 14 mpm pace. I got the picture that there was a scerw up last year and the slower epeple got cut off (>12 mpm). SO, it sounds liek they re-routed to fix that. It was beautiful adn there was something very cool about being in my sort of home town. Having a neighbor run and someone from work (although I don't work near there). It's so funny, I kept hearing names read for awards and theinking, "hey, they're from by us!" Duhhhh...Most of them were. Anyway, I'm thinking I may do it again. As uch as my report sounded like a big whine, they cheered fro teh end runner/walker. They had to pay for the water that they shot into the streets for the runners, but htey did it. It was a very cool feeling (inside, not out :rotfl2: ) So, yes, I'd do it again.

Heather - COngrats on your work out and your decision to up the running! ANd thanks for the kinds words. :grouphug: Pictures can be so cruel. ;) BTW - I think of that last pic your girls took with Scott when you say twins. It makes me crack up! (For those who weren't there, my dh is a child magnet. It the end of teh evening with Heather's famly, her girls were al over him. I had to get a picm, as it's the only time he'll ever have a twin on each arm. ;) At least if I can help it. :p )

Lily - Hope all's ok!!! :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug: (Ummm, I don't recall asking about a sticky. Just talking about sticky weather. Will have to go check my wobbly typing.)

For those who PM'd me: I'm sorry. I turned over a new leaf today adn a trying to work at work. Big for me, I know. ;) My box is now cleaned out.

OMG! I did it AGAIN didn't I.    I plead senility...  That was meant for Mel.

Lily...If I do a separate post with all our websites, could it be stickied? Then I wouldn't be wasting so much bandwidth every week and it might be more noticeable/available to other WISHers who don't hang out on our threads.
Mel, we can work out whatever to make it better. Do we want to link up those we already have to the Marathon FAQ sticky do we all think? Or do you mean to link to the main WISH thread first?

No outside work for me today...way too hot!

Kevin, ooohh it is getting full. Thanks for the update. You mean we STILL have "on the fence people?" Everyone, you can do it. Go for it!

Stay hydrated everyone...

:goodvibes No problem Lily! I take being confused with Mel as a very high compliment! (You may need to apologize big time to her, though. ;) )

Good Morning Team: :surfweb:

I need to hop on and post now, or you all are going to whiz by me. I actually had a mini-breakthrough in my running this weekend. Sunday was a run day at the track. I did a 4.35 mile wog in 51:35 min (11:52 mpm). The breakthrough was that I jogged for 1 mile straight with no pain! I walked a lap, jogged a mile, walked a lap, and repeated 3 times. It went pretty well. Yesterday was back to the pool for a 30 min SWOG. Today's a rest day, tomorrow another SWOG, and Thursday the x-country race with my princesses princess: princess:. I'm excited, but I need to remember to go easy on my legs - I've told myself I'm walking the first 4-5 minutes.

OK, everyone I'm going to try to reconstruct my post from yesterday. I'm going from memory, so if I forget someone I mean no offense.

So do you all remember the Empire State Games I was thinking of signing up for, marching in the opening ceremonies, and running the master's 10k? Well, they finished the games on Sunday. Turns out there was only 1 entrant in my age group for the 10K. The gold medal winner in my age group ran 9 mpm pace for the 10K, and that was it. Man, I could have medaled if I could have run it. I'm definitely putting this race on my calendar for next year. Speaking of which next year's games are scheduled for Westchester County. Don't we have a team member from Westchester County? Oh, Juuuuudyyyyy what are you doing at the end of July 2007? Oh, that's your annual family time with the MIL isn't it?

Kristi- I'm so sorry for your family's loss. I wish you all the best in getting through this difficult time.

Sunny- I hope you are starting to get some relief for your back. :wizard: :wizard:

Mel- Great pace on your 2 miles. I have to agree with Craig, and maybe you need some non-impact workout. Maybe it's to the pool for you too?

monte- I hope things work out for WDW for you for the marathon. I certainly understand the financial issues though. I'd be up for a Bolder Boulder field trip. I've always wanted to run that one.

Sara- I've decided to do O'hana's for a post-marathon celebration dinner too. My princesses are similar ages as yours, and maybe we'll bump into each other there. Have fun on the cruise. Sounds great!

Dave - love the socks. Have been wearing them for my walks and bike rides.
Kathy- I'm really glad the socks are working out for you. Are you still making it over here to Rochester? Did Lynne do the Lake Placid Ironman? I'm curious if she qualified for Kona yet?

Jodi- Wow, you took another job? It sounded like you were sooooo busy with your first job. Don't kill yourself, we want you to be able to put in the training for the Goofy so we can meet you in January. Take care of yourself.

Craig- Your trip to Amsterdam sounds wonderful. What a wonderful way to spend time with your wife. I really appreciate your very eloquent posts. I also concur with your long post to Kristi. When I taught at a small college in Vermont, I was amazed at how at least once/year there would be a death of one of my students there. It was so devastating and draining.

Carrie- Thanks so much for posting the pictures of your meet-up with Solo and Heather, and your 10K. Congrats on your 10K. See you weren't last at all. Is that the Holland Light House in your pictures? My DW and I took a trip to Saugatuck (sp?) for our 1st anniversary and stayed in a B&B there. I remember going over and seeing the Holland Light. Looks like a great race.

OK, I gotta go do my leg exercises. More later.

OK, everybody gather around.....It's time to give Judith Anne a good swift kick in the rear! :furious:

I don't know if it's this heat or what, but I could NOT get out of bed this morning. So that's two days in a row that I should have trained but I didn't. Well, I'm leaving work early today and I'm going home and - after I make sure my girls are OK in this heat - I am getting on that treadmill! Grrrrr.

Dave - PLEASE! That MIL time was a ONCE IN A LIFETIME thing! Please don't do that to me!! Ohh we need to find out about this Westchester race. Yes, that is where I live. Got any more info? I'd be happy to head it up. Ohh how exciting!

I'm going to do some real work now since I am only here for half a day. Yup. Real work. Uh hu. :surfweb:

Hi Judy :wave2: Just picture this guy is kicking you in the butt :cool1: :cool1:. Here's all I can tell you right now. The 30th celebration of the Empire State Summer Games will be held from July 24th through July 29th, 2007 and will mark the first time the Games will take place in Westchester. The Master's 10K road race will probably the last day of the games on July 29th, 2007. The press release said, "The Games will primarily be conducted at area college facilities including Iona College, Manhattanville College, College of New Rochelle, SUNY Purchase, and Pace University." Here's the whole press release if you are interested. Obviously, there's lots of time to plan.

Oh I know where ALL those schools are! I went to Pace! None of them are too far from me. Whooo hooo! Everybody to Judy's house! :rotfl:

Morning all!

Partial drive-by...

Carrie-- Good to hear that the race was really a success. I might have to do that one myself next year.

Judy-- :cool1: That's the closest to rear-kicking I could find... did it work?!

Dave-- I believe that's actually the Grand Haven lighthouse-- it's north of Holland. Small world-- I actually spend tons of time down in Saugatuck.

I got al ready to run yesterday afternoon and then checked the weather... 98 degrees and a 110 degree heat index. Yep, treadmill day. I did 2 (really ugly) miles 3/2 in 19:30 (9:45/mile). I think I waited too long to get into the gym and so I had really low energy. I am actually at work today (so much for my health and safety day) and it's looking like another joyous treadmill day.

Oh, and I almost forgot: I almost LOST MY GARMIN! :sad2: I got home and went searching for it from this weekend and couldn't find it for the life of me. Luckily it smoehow rolled under the bed of the place I was staying, so it's on it's way home. :cheer2: Between books and my first fall tuition payment this month I don't know if I could have swung the purchase price of another, so I'm VERY relieved.

OK, my phone will NOT stop ringing, so I better dash.
Happy training all!
Kevin :earsboy:

Dave - Kevin's right. It is GRand Haven. Holland does not have the inner light, but it was hazy and my pic might not have shown it clearly.

Kevin - So glad you found your Garmin! (Or at least some honest person did.) Good choice on teh TM!

I was headed to Curves last night, but had to do an equip x-change with someone from work and got home an hour late. :(

Supposed to run 40 min tonight, but the temp's the same as yesterday, see Kevins post. I should be a little cooler, but I die above 82. Looks liek a pool run fo rme. BTW, I did xt this motrning. I would hope 27 feet of hand auger boring would count fo rthis. It was nasty! Hot, muggy and buggy, but at least I was in the shade. COuld really use a nap now, though.

G'Day all,

I apologise for being out of the loop all of last week, I am house and dog sitting at a friends and have not been near the computer.

Some of my response will now be really old!

Mel - I really like my Saucony's. I tend to roll my feet - inwards on one foot and outwards on the other. The Saucony's are really stiff, but they hold my feet in place. They are also quite heavy, so not ideally suited to 1/2 marathons but it's better than risking injury.

Cam - Congratulations on your 5km race.

Sunny - Hope you are doing okay, and awesome work on the logos. I can't wait to put Mickey 2008 on mine!

Kristi - my condolences to yourself, Chad and family. My dear friend lost her 20 year old daughter in January and it has been a rough year. I send you all hugs.
Krisiti - if only I could maintain your pace. At 13 1/2 mins per mile, you are way faster than I am when I run 4/walk 1. I maintain a 15 min/mile pace. Right now I am much slower.

TiffJ - For my previous two halfs I did my long runs at a slow place. And despite my thinking that it would work it did! I use the following tools from runners world:
Pace Calculator
If I want to complete the 1/2 in 3 hours and 15 minutes - my race pace is 14.53 min/mile. Then I use the Training Pace Calculator . My easy run/long run pace is 16.24.

I use these and completed my first half in 3:25:04
and my second in 3:28: something.
I would have been under 3:15:00 but I had to stop to take photos!

Carrie - congrats on your race.

Christa - Look after yourself, no more running with strep throat.

Lily - I had a discoloured nail after my first 1/2 marathon, but never actually lost the nail. Before the WDW half in 2005 I went up 1/2 a size. I normally wear size 8 1/2 runners, and they are fine for 5-10 kms. I changed to 9 for the WDW half and for my 60kms to end cancer and going up the 1/2 size made a world of difference.

I have been given the all clear to start running - but only for a minute at a time, so this week I am running one, walking 4. Today will be the first test.

Treated myself to a manicure this morning, and tomorrow I am having my hair cut and coloured! It's all about me this week.

If I want to complete the 1/2 in 3 hours my race pace needs to be

Hi everybody, happy August! I know summer is coming to end, I could hear the locusts or cicadas or whatever they are humming tonight, this is the first time I heard that this year. I just had a horrible run, I actually ended up cutting it short, doing only 2.23 miles instead of my planned 4. I don't really know what happened, I felt fine all day, came home from work and a Healthy Choice dinner and watched a couple of episodes of Sex and the City I have Tivo'ed (can you tell that Stephen is out of town? ;) ). Around 8:00 I got up to get ready to run, ran on the treadmill doing 3/1 (10:30/12:45) when all of a sudden I got SO hot, not exercising hot, but fever hot and then I felt like I was going to be sick to my stomach, I stopped a couple of times to take a drink, but every time I started running again, I felt sick. I didn't really want to clean up vomit off my treadmill, so I made it to 2 miles and stopped. I feel a little better now, but still queasy, I have no idea where it came from, maybe something I ate? :confused3 So I guess I'll try 4 again tomorrow, but this really screwed my week up as I don't really want to do back to back runs and I have a 5K on Saturday.

Rachael--(I love it spelled that way  ) the pampering sounds nice! You just need to do that every once in a while.

Carrie--Were you able to get your pool run in? I can't believe this heat, it's unreal. Are you at least getting rain in MI? We haven't had any significant rain in about a month, everyone's grass is so brown. I am so ready for fall.

Kevin--How lucky you are that someone found your Garmin! I would be a mess without mine. And for the record, you do NOT look fat! :teeth:

Judy--How are your girls?

Christa--How are you? Are you among the living again?

I know it's early, but I think I'm going to go to bed, or at least I'm going to lay in bed and read. Hopefully I'll feel better tomorrow!!

Bit of a drive by tonight...

32 min on the TM last night at W3/R7. Pace is improving, but still at least a min per mile slower than outside. Today my foot is fine but only because I bought some sports tape and have kept it taped all day.

Craig, as usual, you're spot on :thumbsup2 . Both shoe guy and the podiatrist recommended that I get different types of shoes, so I have my neutral ASICS and my light stability Mizuno that have nice arch support.

Dave...I have been thinking about pool running after seeing your experience. Unfortunately, the whole bathing-suit-in-public thing is still a bit scary :scared1:

Lily...I certainly am thrilled to be confused with Carrie! What I was thinking was a sticky on this board, but not necessarily with the Marathon FAQ, just something on its own. If it could be linked with the main WISH board too, that would be cool. Just let me know what would work best and what I need to do.

Where's Helen?

Maybe y'all can help me with this...I'm making a list of races I want to run in my lifetime. I'm shooting for at least one in all 50 states and I'd love some in Canada, too. Doesn't have to be half or full...just cool races! This is what I have so far...

Race Wish List

State by state Race List

California
DL Half

Colorado
Bolder Boulder

Illinois
Chicago Distance Classic

Maine
Mt Desert Island Half

New Hampshire
Applefest

Ohio
Flying Pig

Virginia
RnR Half

Any suggestions?

Hi everyone!

I did an hour on the elliptical tonight. Walked out of the gym and the heat just hit me. It felt just as hot as it did in the afternoon sun! :sunny: The heat index made it feel like it was 110 degrees!

Mel - come up to Philly for the Broad Street Run. It's a ten-miler. I'm trying to plan something like this also. A race in all 50 states.

Stay hydrated folks! Just a little over 6 weeks till the DL 1/2!

Terri

Hi to all my training buddies! Are you all mopping up sweat when you step outside? We are NOT used to this in MI! :sunny:
Carrie- I almost registered for the Coast Guard race! I am kind of glad I didn't - it was so hot! Way to go for you! Maybe I will do it next year!

Kristi- I am so sorry to hear about your loss. Your family is in my prayers.

I rode my bike Sunday night - it was nice to have the breeze, but I still sweat like crazy! Monday was a swimming day - thank goodness. Tuesday was my day off as it was supposed to be the hottest of the week. ;) I am supposed to get up in 5 hours and run. Now I have told you...I will check back tomorrow and hopefully tell you I did it!

:wave2: :wave2: Happy training - try to stay cool! And DRINK! :rotfl:

Bekah

Hi Everyone,

Just a quick post, didn't get to do it last night. I ran 5 miles last night on the Threadmill.....I wanted to do 6 miles but I was pretty exhausted from work, I was the only admin at work yesterday, and of course everyone needed something :guilty: .
