Wk of Jul 2--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

Phil and I got a babysitter for the boy yesterday and did an 8 mile trail run. It was really good. I had done that trail once before and thought it was really tough b/c of all of the hill climbs. I felt really good yesterday. I used a HRM and kept my heart rate in what felt like a good zone. I felt much stronger than last time and I was sure my time would be better. I was actually 3 minutes slower!!!! Oh well, I wasn't as tired on the trail and the run felt good! I also rode the single speed on a trail this weekend. It was really fun. I learned to keep my arms loose, as it has a ridgid fork. I couldn't ride all of the hills. I think I had to walk in about 3 spots. I am not very good at fast downhill. If i would be brave and just let go, I would have more momentum for the uphill. Maybe next time.

Sunny - tell the little man congratulations! That is wonderful! Sorry the steriods aren't helping much. That is cool that you and your DS are doing one of the irongirl events together. That sounds like fun!

Judy - Wow! ELEVEN MINUTES!!! That is great!

Mel - I'm so glad you had a little relief!

Jen - Way to go on your 5k!

Matt - good luck w/ your 5k tomorrw. I am doing one too. It is really hilly and mostly on a gravel road and I'm pushing the boy in the stroller so I'm not expecting any personal records!

Terri - spinning during the tour is a great idea! I don't even know what network it is on. I'll have to check my guide. I'm totally rooting for George too! He won a stage last year. I would love to see him win this year.

I'm still without my personal laptop, so I apologize for anything I missed from last week's thread.

Mel - Great to hear your foot is improving. :wizard: for staying injury free.

Sunny - That is an absolutely terrible story!! Congrats to DS. Glad you're enjoying your time-off.

Momoftwogirls - WELCOME!! We love our family expanding. You'll get lots of great advice here. There are all abilities represented and we are all happy to share info. The running store sounds like a great place to start.

Jackie - Please listen to the good doctor :) I know how tempting it is to "squeeze" a run in but better safe than sorry. Your shins will thank you.

Judy - WTG!! :cheer2: You're doing awesome. You should be oh so VERY proud of yourself.

Tiff - Great pace!! :woohoo: You'll be flying at DL.

Kristi - Great job on the DL training! :rotfl2: about all of the really bad food on the Boardwalk.

Jen - Loved the race report!! Congrats!! Definitely heart-warming  You're killing me with the commentary on your 5-yo, as I have one of those too :rotfl: !!

Anne - Glad you and DH were able to escape for a while. The bookstore is SO tempting!

Matt - :rotfl2: Thanks so much for the Monday Morning Funny with the visual of your trying to impress the Mrs.!! Glad you guys had a good track workout and enjoyed the reward afterward.

Terri - Best of luck surviving the busy season and for the twice-a-days. At least you have the tour to motivate you. I love watching running programs while I'm on the treadmill.

Heather - Thanks for wondering where I've been...

It was a busy weekend for me. I ran 14 miles on Saturday and then was a race volunteer both Saturday and Sunday for a local 10 mile race in my hometown of Lake George, NY. It was a lot of fun to cheer on the 500 runners. I hope to volunteer for another of my running club races real soon. Today I ran 6 miles and I am going to the Y with DH to lift weights this afternoon. DS turns 16 on the 5th and DD turns 9 on the 10th. We're having a combined party this afternoon.

Best of luck to all with training and meeting goals this week. Happy 4th and Happy Canada Day to our northern friends!!

Sara - Bummer 'bout the lap top! Glad tou could check in!

k - Welcome!!!!

Sunny - Congrats to ds and hugs to dd! That's so hard.

Jen - COngratulations. DH and I were scheduled to do 5 Saturday,m but it was so humid, we did 3. Still was awful. Cool taht the 10k'er congratulated you. RUnner/walkers/wogger are genearally very cool about that stuff. Haveing a Boston MArathonm runner ask me how I liked a 5-miler was amazing.

Mel - Hope your drama with dd and docs is getting better!!!

Cam - You guys do waaaay too much! Good luck tomorrow!

MelR - Glad you culd get some quality training time with dh. ;)

Matt - That's precisely why I make such a good anchor for dh. he can't go all out and has stuff left in the end of long runs. :teeth:

We did 3 Saturday and then walked 3 that night. Back on teh boardwalk. Almost had another sandal disaster as I did not wear walking shoes to dinner. Luckily, dh was paying attention when I said, "We'l get blown off the boardwalk and I was kill my fee." No one else did. So, went home, got decent shoes and walked 3. AMde me feel better after I shortened the am run. DH and I have decided that we are no longer pushing LRs to MOnday if we are gone. We are back to packing running gear again. I'm hoping it will help fo rme to run on what tends to be my best day again.

Happy 4th everyone!

Sara - I have a 5 and 3 year old. WOW are those trying ages. They say the darndest things tho! I had to re-instate the rewards sticker chart just to get them to behave and stop fighting. And the attitude that a 5 year old can throw is amazing. My 5 yo is a princess and the 3 year old is a rough and tumble who is obscessed with Snow White. Last fall at WDW she saw Snow White in a parade and broke out into tears screaming "I Want HER!!!, I Want to take her home!!". She was in histerics every time we saw Snow White. OH and then we got a suprise package left in our room for each girl from a cast member and Kate's had an autographed pic of Snow White.

OK, that was totally off Topic.

I need to run tonight, but the weather looks like rain. And it is unbelieveably humid again, until the rain comes. That is if it comes. After my run we are planning a back yard campfire and fireworks at home.

Happy 4th to all the US WISHERS!

Hi guys!

I ran my last LR last night in preparation for my half marathon in Calgary, Canada this weekend. I went out at 8:10 p.m. hoping that it would be cooler, but NOOOO, it was 90 F when I started and then 85 F when I finished my 8 miles. Calgary gets a cool air off the Rocky Mountains at night so the 7:00 a.m. start should be about 50 F. Oooh, can't wait for that!

We are flying up to Canada on Wednesday and will be gone for 3 weeks. I will try and check in periodically and will give a full report of my race when I get back.

Oh, one last thing, I ran my 8 miles in my new orthotics. They aren't feeling 'great' yet, but I can see they have the potential to really help with my hammer toe and ITBS. :teeth:

Sara, great job on your 14 miles! It is great that you are finding the time to cross train too!

Christa, and all you swimmers, I think that is a wonderful way to cross train. I really think it would really help my running. I am going to add that after my summer vacation. Oh, and Christa, girlfriend, a sub 9 minute mile over 11 miles!!! You rock!! :cool1:

MelR, congrats on your new bike. It's sweet! I envy that you and Phil are able to do those adventure/trail runs together.

Jen, congrats on your 5K. Do you have another race planned?

Cam, Matt and everyone else running races tomorrow, good luck! :cheer2:

Anne, tell us how you like the Jeff Galloway book.

Jackie, good luck getting that run in tomorrow. Today is frightfully hot. :sunny: I think it is 95 now. I took the kids to the grocery store and they couldn't even stand being in the parking lot. :rolleyes2

Judy, good job on your 11 minutes of running. You will be doing a nice run/walk ratio before you know it. :Pinkbounc

Mel, I am happy to hear your foot is doing better. Go girl!

Tiff, yeah for your 4 miles. That is great since you were just coming off your VBS week. Those are exhausting!! :hyper: I really needed time to wind down after ours.

Not sure if I will be able to post again before our trip, so healthy training everyone for the month of July!!

Colleen - I am sending in the big dog (or pixie) to give you some PD... :tinker: for your 1/2. It sounds so exciting! Swimming (and biking too) has helped me go faster on my runs. It also helps me not to get tired of running and when I am sore, gives me something else to do. Thanks for your encouragment about the LR! :goodvibes Cannot wait to hear all about your 1/2.

Judy - :dancer: for your 11 min of running! I am SO PROUD OF YOU RUNNER GIRL!

Sara - Congrats on your LR!

Matt - :rotfl2: on your track WO with your wife! That is so funny that you were trying to impress her...You guys are WICKED FAST on the track! :cool1: Congrats on your WL...You both are doing so GREAT!

:wizard: :wizard: To everyone running in races tomorrow! Have a great time!

How coudl I forget Judy??? :guilty: Huge congrats on your 11 minutes!!!!!!!

Hey, I felt something strange this morning...I think it was called...I'M PROUD OF MYSELF! :goodvibes

Oh Judy I am soooooooo proud of you :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2:

Just a quickie- Mel R, if you booked direct with Disney and a code comes out next year, you can apply it to your booking anyway. That's what I did last year.

Not much else for me today, had to read the post quickly as I'm supposed to be working but am procrastinating on here, but well done Judy, that's cool. I'm plodding along, did 80 minutes Saturday but have to take next weekend off so won't go up to 90 minutes until the 13th, still I'm ahead of my official programme so no big issues with that.Oh well I suppose I can't put work off any longer, Helen

Hi to all! I am a newbie here and SO excited to find this part of the DIS board!

I am training right now for the Disney Triathlon in September and then the Marathon in January! We were at DW last year and saw the marathon and I promised DH that I would be there doing it in 07.

A little about me: I am married and have three kids. One born to us and two who made a small detour through South Korea. Our newest daughter just arrived home this May and is 6. I am thankful for this training as it is my me thing. I used to be in great shape, but the stress from the adoptions and some health issues really slowed me down. I have been seriously training for only two weeks, but it feels so good.

I just got an awesome new bike that I am so excited about! It will definitely help my bike time. I rode it for the first time last night and had so much fun!

Tonight is a running night. I have asthma and am re-building my lungs and HR so I have been going 2/2 R/W. I am hoping to do more running tonight although it is humid and hot. We'll see. I had a while of creating a very negative attitude for myself, so every time I get out there and do something is a victory.

So excited to join you all!

Bekah

Hi Bekah, :welcome:

Glad you found us. That is how I feel about training as well, it is for me! I have a 7 and 9 year old and they have learned that sometimes they just need to bike along with me as I run. 'Mommy is a better mommy when I get exercise!' :thumbsup2

Thanks Christa for the PD! I am really looking forward to the race.

Colleen

:welcome: Bekah!

Good Luck to all the 4th of July racers tomorrow!
I'll be thinking of you while I am at work. :(

Quick check in: today was my "stretch & strengthen" day. I didn't really have time to do anything since I worked, napped, then had swim class with Zack at the Y at 5:30pm. So, I am going to count swim as my strength & stretching. I didn't realize how hard it was going to be to hold him up to do all his "swimming." Well, it wasn't that hard, but I am still counting it! :teeth:

It is way past my bedtime...

Colleen- Good luck on your race & have fun on your vacation! We'll miss you!

Welcome Bekah :wave2: I love my new bike although I've hardly had a chance to ride it. I will ride more, I will ride more......

Cam- Good luck on your race :wizard: for no rain & cooler temps!

Judy - Sorry I missed you on my last post. Great job! :thumbsup2

Bekah - Welcome!

It never ceases to amaze me how I can just get into a good training groove, be focused and stay on schedule, and then something comes along to yank me out of it. :confused3

Exactly one month ago today (6/3), my aunt (mom's sis) past away from stomach cancer. She and Mom were very close, so Mom took it hard. I've been keeping my eye on her and she just started getting back to her normal self. Tonight my uncle (Mom's brother) passed away. :sad1:
He had health issues, but up until this past weekend, was doing ok. We saw him yesterday and he didn't look good. Got a call tonight that he passed.

Now Mom is a wreck all over again. We'll spend the next few days making arrangements for him, since we're his closest family (he had no kids and wife died years ago).

Oh, Terri! I am so sorry to hear this. Lots of :grouphug: coming your way. Take care!

Terri- :grouphug: for you and your mom and your entire family. This is an incredibly difficult time. Hope you can get some time for yourself in all the madness!

What can I say, HHH - HOT HAZY HUMID. Temp was 79º to start and with the humidity it felt like 93º. My Sunday run 5 1/2 mile was definitely a LSD run. Ran a 10:27/mile pace. This was a good run, the heart rate stayed pretty much in check with an average of 144bpm.

My tip for the week.
Let your heart be your virtual trainer. There are 3 distinct training zones, Base, Threshold & Speed/Hill. Training inside these zones will not only assist you from completing your training session but also will allow you to train to the optimum efficiency.

Base - intensity should be 65-75% of your maximum heart rate.
Threshold - between 75-85%
Speed/Hill - between 85+%.

Use your heart to determine what is optimum. Your heart rate monitor tells you how hard your heart is working in beats per minute which gives you a precise view of what's happening inside your body. With this being said working out at the correct exercise intensity is the only way to achieve your fitness goals.

Put simply:
Too hard = injury, muscle soreness = can't finish workout
Too easy = no improvement or results = will not reach fitness goals.

How to determine what your Max Heartrate is.
The most common method is:
220 subtract age - Using this method my max heartrate is 180.
My training zones would be
B = 117-135 bpm
T = 135-153 bpm
S/H = 153-180bpm

My prefered method is devolped by ally Edwards, an expert and author in heart rate training.

Males:
210 - 1/2 your age - 1% of your total body weight + 4 = Maximum Heart Rate

Females:
210 - 1/2 your age - 1% of your total body weight + 0 = Maximum Heart Rate

So for me my Max is 192.2
My training zones would be
B = 125-144 bpm
T = 144-163 bpm
S/H = 163-192bpm

There are a ton of links and resources on the net.

I have one question how do they corel everyone. I know that they ask for proof of finish if under 5hrs. Does this put you in the front corel or is there more than 2 corels?

Cheers

Terri - lots of :wizard: and :grouphug: for you!

Robb - I feel your HH humidity pain...My times suffered there too when I ran. I have to say I am glad to hear it wasn't just me.

Bekah - :welcome: to this crazy group! :cheer2:

I have come to a conclusion..now hear me out...I think I do better with hills (up and down) than flat. This is for running and biking. I think the down hills help me get the speed up for the up hills (this is mainly true for biking.) With flat, I have to always work equally hard. So can I say, the hills make me a better runner (an biker)! :confused3
I did a mini brick workout today. Biked around 14 miles (in 45 min) and then ran a little over a mile. (You can see where the "mini" comes from.) Was going to go further but the fam got up earlier than expected and they were all waiting for me to make "Mickey Waffles" for them. So I told them I had to do at least 1 mile and they said they could wait 10 more min...I finished in 8. :woohoo:

DD5 wants to post so here it is:
:butterfly :tink: :smickey: :tinker: :tinker: :mickeybar :cake: party: pixiedust: :hippie: :lovestruc

Morning everyone,

Sorry I haven't been on the boards lately. Saturday I ended up going to a flea market with my husband, mother, and step-father.....that took up most of the day but it was fun.

Sunday - I just started to dust off my summer clothes and yesterday after work I was so pooped I didn't get any running done (I was the only admin on yesterday).

Today, Thank god - I have off from work :) BTW - Have a great 4th everyone :cheer2: :cheer2:

I hope to get out there today! or at least to the fitness center :)
