Wk of Jan 7--WISH Walking/Running Club

Hey all, just cooling off from gym so figured, hmmm, what can I do while I wait.....so here I am again.

Well already it's easier to get out running now I have something to train for (admittedly 365 days away -agggggh, this time next year I'll be halfway through the Goofy and quite possibly napping!!). I did 27 minutes yesterday, so according to my Goofy plan I have to double that today, woke up this morning to howling gales - so I've just run 54 minutes on a treadmill - I loathe the treadmill, normally can't stay on there for more than 10, but the lure of the shiny's is just too much.

Although I admit, I was helped by the joy that is Scooter on the ipod and yep, Sunny I'd love to know what Paul thought - I can imagine phrases like 'respect to the man in the ice cream van' might freak you out a bit at 19 miles if you're not expecting them!!!

Mark: if you've already run 10 miles twice, you can run a half - most training plans only see you running 10-11 miles max before the race anyway, just keep up your overall weekly mileage between now and then, it's the overload of miles throughout the week that's as important as the longer runs.

Westcliffe: further to the other replies, its fine to jig training plans around as much as you like so long as you do the recommend mileage a week, and get in the long run at the distance recommended 95% of the time.

As for shirts, all my race shirts just say 100% polyester on the labels, some I think are cool max, other's I'm not so sure. Dont' know if that helps anybody do anything, but it's passing some time!

Oh well off to the bath now and thankfully I'm not yet running distances where it needs to be cold!!! - Helen

 Hi to all! I have enjoyed reading all of the race reports and I am totally impressed with all of you. What an accomplishment and something you will be proud of forever. I'm so glad to be back with you all and looking forward to the training year ahead. I don't plan to do too many races to prepare. I don't enjoy 5Ks but I may look around for a few 10Ks in the fall just to get the feel of running in a big group again. My training schedule has changed from what I did for the 2007 half. I now work out twice a day, six times a week in an effort to get to the illusive 10 minute mile. I work with a trainer 2 times a week but we are concentrating only on strength in those sessions. The cardio is up to me! I need to drop a ton of weight so I am eating much better than I have in recent months. No more Dunkin Donuts and Micky D's for me - for a while:). Reading all of your reports has had me thinking the unthinkable; MAYBE I CAN DO THAT FULL AFTERALL! No commitment yet, just a crazy thought in the back of my mind.

Have a great weekend everybody. We expect temps near 70 so I'm thinking it will be nice for my long run. (Long being a relative term you understand!)

I am training for my first 1/2 marathon in April (Long Branch, NJ) and my question has to do with running shoes. Currently, I wear the Nike+ shoes that work with my ipod, and I love them. Right now, I am running approx. 12 miles per week. My question is should I go to the running store and get different running shoes? I really like using the Nike+ system with my ipod, but I am wondering if running shoes will be better for my feet.

Thanks for the input!

Laurie

Okay Lynnda reading your post just made me realize that I am into this Disney Marathon stuff waaaaaaaaaaay too much. When I read about your hidden mickey scar my first thought was "HEY, I WANT ONE OF THOSE!!!" :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

I see you're doing the preggo thing too! Congrats! When's your due date? I'm due on the 4th of July so that doesn't give me much time to get in shape for the 1/2 in January. I'm trying to figure out what exercise I should be doing now during the pregnancy to help make it easier post baby. Might I ask how you're handling it?

Dena - I have to say I think it would have been easier and less painful to just get a Mickey tattoo!!! :rotfl2: But I earned this one! :teeth:

Congrats on your pregnancy, too! :goodvibes I am due April 13, but looking at a c-section during the week before. (DS was breech, so this will be a repeat.) Yea for a 4th of July baby!!! You can definitely get in the training. Most half training guides start around 4 months out, assuming you have some walking (and possibly running) base. My OB said to walk as much as my body would allow, and as long as it felt okay. He also suggested swimming as a great way to cross-train. One thing I read encouraged using a heart rate monitor if you have one. Your body is working harder already, so be careful not to push too hard with the exercise. As far as how I'm handling it... let's just say I was Pooh-sized before pregnancy, and feel like I am now Lumpy-sized... :rotfl: I walk when I can, but usually not more than 2 miles at a time. It has also been waaaaaay too hot here (as everyone knows from last weekend), so I try to avoid being out in worst of the heat. We will have plenty of time for training, so just listen to your body and do what it will allow for now. That being said, a friend of mine is super-fit and runs alot. She just stopped RUNNING in her 7th month! :scared1: If you are able, go for it! :thumbsup2

Laurie - How do your feet, legs and back feel after a long run? If you are having chronic discomfort in any area, you may need to change your shoes. If not - iPod on!

Had to post to sport the new clippie:) It's a little disconcerting writing a $315 check to Disney a year out but that 15th Anniv. special medal is calling me- loudly, no subtle whispering here.(my Goofy plus Mom's Mickey- I kind of filled out the form and wrote the check for her so all she had to do pro-actively was copy the DVC cards but hey, she mentioned doing it so it's all good right?)

So about Goofy 2007- slow(2:15ish half, 6:12ish full), hot, humid and the marathon was tons of fun particularly thanks to Howard(Keenho) and his friend Kevin. Finished, said 'that wasn't so bad and in fact was pretty fun- I think I'm going Goofy again rather than just running the full.' Two little blisters on my feet but otherwise no soreness race days or after and felt great w/ tons of energy. I think I could have done another marathon Monday but my feetsies were glad not to.

Currently I am re-evaluating my triathlon season and may actually take some(more) planned races out. Definites are FL 70.3 in May at WDW, the Patriot HIM July 1st in southern Mass., IM Lake Placid July 22 raising funds for pediatric cancer, and IM WI-Madison Sept 9. Possibilities include the Mooseman HIM in NH June 3, Muskoka Long Course in Huntsville, ON June, the Longhorn HIM in Austin, TX Oct, and the 70.3 World Champs in Clearwater FL in Nov. I may do either of the June races but not both but may also do neither. Longhorn is very likely and 70.3 Worlds will depend on how May 20th goes as I missed qualifying by 8 seconds last year. So 3 or 4 Half Ironman distance races and 2 full Ironmans rather than 5 HIMs and 2 IMs. I'm actually worried that too many HIMs will disrupt my training for the IMs plus the financial cost of the amount of travel associated w/ the races I do. IM Lake Placid is the closest thing to a local race on that calendar.

Only 10 more days of psych- yeah! Outpatient psych is great for catching up on reading but otherwise snooze inducing. Then comes 6 weeks of surgical h-e-double hockey sticks. Actually it should only really smell for 4 weeks as the week of Ortho and the week of anesthesia shouldn't be bad but general surgery is going to be awful hours that will not be conducive to my desired training schedule. I miss the tiny ones!

Welcome new people and congrats to all the new bling owners!

Panthergirl---so far, my feet, legs, back feel great after my runs....my feet have always felt comfortable in Nike shoes. I have wide feet, and Nike sneakers for me always fit perfectly. I have tried a few other brands with no luck, so I was hoping to be able to stay with Nike. I was just wondering if they were too big and clunky to be running a half or even full marathon. But I guess I should stick with what feels good. Thanks!

If your body feels great after a run in them--stay with them! I'm on my third different pair of shoes, and I'm finally in love with them. I only changed shoes b/c the first pair ended up hurting my baby toes and with the second my feet slid to much in the toe box. If you are truly concerned with your shoes take them with you to your local running store and they should be able to analyze your gait and reccommend a pair for you.

Stephanie - I think I'm going to do the LR half relay with a friend. If that's the case, she'll start us out and I'll finish up. I'm going to try to talk her into wearing the WISH shirts. I have 2 of them. We are also going to wear a minnie cap with the ears. We're calling ourselves the Disney Duo (we had to sign up under a team name). Maybe I'll see you along the route. I'd love to run part of the race with you but I'm sure you'll be much faster at this point than me. By the way, we are signed up for the spaghetti dinner the night before. Are you going to do that?

Terri - Nike Women's - Yea! I'm definitely doing the half. The friend that I'm doing it with ran the marathon last year. She said there were some hills involved - of course, it is San Francisco!

By the way, everyone, I got lots of compliments on our shirts. Several people said our shirts were very motivating. A few even told me we had the best team shirts. YEA WISHers!

Oh, I forgot to tell you guys......

My friends, DH and I (6 total) got to be grand marshalls in one of the Magic Kingdom parades on Monday. We came into the park with our medals on and some cast members pulled us to the side and asked if we would like to be grand marshalls. We got to ride in a Disney firetruck with the characters. It was a lot of fun. I'll have to post a picture when I get them.

Panthergirl - Like you, I'm looking forward to those 70's temps this weekend. I want to get in as much running as possible before the cold weather returns!

Anne - I'm as excited as you are about family deciding to join you! DD16 told me this morning that she thinks she wants to do the half with me. She wanted me to do the Minnie so she could start with a 5K, but understands that we can't go in May and June, so she's willing to shoot for January!

I have a job interview tomorrow for an assignment that will start a month from now. So hopefully I'll get that and my workout/diets habits will be so ingrained that working won't have any negative effects. The good news is that the job is closer to my gym than my house is.
I know it's totally lame to quote yourself, but
I GOT THE JOB!
I haven't worked since November when I quit a job I hated after one week - that started to look a little unwise when all these registration fees for the various races started to add up.

And I don't start until mid-February so I'm taking a solo trip to the World between now and then.

Life is really good, and a lot of it has to do with my newly inspired exercise/diet routine, my running goals, and the support of the people on the WISH board.

As promised I hit the elliptical for 1:15 yesterday - still boring, boring, boring. The roads and sidewalks are pretty slick today, but getting somewhat better. I carpooled to my interview today and hit the gym right after. I only did 40 minutes of cardio today because I was distracted thinking about how the interview went.

I'm hoping the roads will be OK for me to drive to the gym tomorrow.

blueroses--Congrats on the job!:cool1:

Well, I'm off to brave the elements for 16miiles--If I don't drown in the flood, I'll post how it went later today!

I have been lurking for a few weeks, and I have gotten totally caught up in all the excitement. I have been absolutely inspired by all of you, so much so that I have decided to do the Minnie 5K and the 1/2 Marathon next January. I am a complete and total newbie. I have quite a bit of weight to lose, and I think having a goal like this will help me stay focused.
I'm ordering MFM and can't wait to delve into it. I have no idea what I'm doing or what it all entails but I'm excited to be a part of this. I'm sure as I learn more I will have more questions, too.
As for me, I'm a SAHM. Dh is an airline pilot, and our girls are 7 and 4. I don't have a treadmill, but I do have an elliptical. Is that a good training tool? Or is pounding the pavement the best training of all? I will have to work it all out. Getting out can be difficult when dh is out of town. Fortunately, my little one starts K next fall, so I will have a bit more time.
Okay, well I'm done rambling. Look forward to getting to kow ya'll better.

Eva - My DH is going to attempt the half in 08 also, and he is starting from square one too. So don't feel alone. If you are interested this is the plan he is going to be using, and it's the same one I started with after having my kids. As far as the Elliptical, although it is great for Cross Training, I am not fond of it as a subsitute to running. To me it just doesn't simulate running close enough. However, that is just my opinion there are people that have used an Elliptical while injured and still training for a marathon and done just fine.

Blueroses, CONGRATS ON THE JOB:cheer2: :cheer2: That is awesome for you. Will you still be able to do the Minnie?

Nucpharm29, good luck on your 16 miles....I am in awe.

Mingirl, WELCOME!!!! I will also be at the Minnie we are attempting the 15K. I also have about 30 pds to lose before that. A am also a newbie...but the people on these boards are amazing and can answer all your questions.

Excape, how exciting for you and your friends. My family got to be the first family at AK a few years back that was neat.

Have a great day all.

Kim

blueroses - Congrats on the new job!! That's great! :cool1:
