Wk of Jan 7--WISH Walking/Running Club

Hello Wishers!

I ran (well mostly walked) the Disney 1/2 marathon this weekend and kept seeing your Wish shirts. They were so inspiring, especially since my friend who was suppose to go with me wimped out and I ended up by myself. I talked to a couple of you when I cheered the marathoners at the Beach Club on Sunday. I want to join the Wish Team. I am signing up for the 1/2 marathon again next year. The race was a lot of fun. My goal is to lose 50 more pounds by then.

Hey Dave, Glad to see you made it back safely!!! We had an awesome time at the Lodge again.

Sunny, I "think" I saw you during the full marathon in MGM. I was standing near the entrance for awhile, then moved in by the Commissary to cheer. You weren't wearing your WISH shirt, so I wasn't sure. I asked Cam later and she confirmed it, now I wish I would have screamed for you on my hunch!!! I was so happy to hear you finished.

Kim, I started my quest for the 1/2 in January. I am NOT a runner and could barely run 1 minute at that time. I am now doing 5 minute run 1 minute walk intervals. PLUS, I am still about 40 pounds overweight. So YES, you can do it... 1 step at a time. Start slow and build up!!! I swear I never ever thought I would be a runner, but now I am and am totally addicted.

Anne....... Hey there my starting buddy (see I am now acknowledging that fact!!!!). Glad to see you are still so chipper! It was awesome to meet you. You know, not only are we starting buddies, but you were the first WISHer I met (remember at the Expo). Oh wait, MelC was there too... guess you two will have to duke it out!!!!

OK, I have done NOTHING at work yet. YIKES! I did run out and meet my girls and DH for lunch tho!!! Now that the marathon is over, I am back to running for exercise and trying to get those last extra pounds off!!!

Welcome, Jan:woohoo: You've made my day! My hope was that our WISH shirts would inspire others and bring in new members. Next year it's going to be lime green across the entire course!:thumbsup2

So... I have a suggestion... can next year's shirts be the Wick (sp?) fabric.... It seems alot of people didn't wear them for the race because it was so darn hot and cotton and heat just don't mix for a race....

Just an idea....or maybe we can have both the wick and the cotton? Just throwing it out there for the masses! :)

Kathy - I could be mistaken, but I swear that the WISH shirts were a type of wicking material - DEFINITELY not cotton. I wore mine for the entire full and did not feel it hindered me.

You could order the shirts in either Wicking or Cotton. I have both. I wore the wicking ones and my scream team wore the cotton ones. I had on a sleeveless one and had no problems with the heat.

oooh yes, wicking shirts would be nice. I didn't get one this year (the whole not running it thing getting in the way a bit there) so forgive me if they were wicky - but if we had nice polyester numbers (add that to the list of odd things that runners say) I'd definitely wear mine for the half at least.

Just came back from a 30 minute run, has anyone ever had a heel spur? I mucked my feet up big time on our big trip (4 days, 28 hours of walking, shoes with a half inch thick sole!!) and I'm getting pain in the sole of my heel and ankle - if it doesn't clear up by next week I'll go the physio, but just wondering.

Christa: my current race schedule so far: 11km on 25th Feb, Gold Coast half marathon in Aus, July 1st, Auckland half marathon end of Oct (I'll have my roadster number, I've got to fly back and run it with it on), that's it so far, not sure what other races they'll have in Sydney - unfortunately I have to be in England the weekend of the Sydney half which I'd really like to do. It finishes at the Opera House.

Krista: Oh no, I'd forgotten about the bathroom pain, it's that moment when you have to stop and steel yourself to sit (Sorry if TMI!) - men have it waaaayyyy too easy. Helen

My WISH shirt was wicking. But the material was a lot heavier than the Nike wicking shirt I had, so I opted for it. The shirt-guy cautioned that the tanks might not work well for women, but Wendy had a tank and it looked great. I'll go for tank next year. (Of course it will probably be back in the 30s then!)

Tyvek (or whatever that bib material is) might be a good idea to print up WISH bibs for the back if shirt options became a problem. I can look into that.

Unfortunately, lots of people have caught on to the neon lime green/safey yellow. Fortunately the back so our shirts were quite unique!

Hey Helen, Paul's mp3 player konked out somewhere around mile 5 so I gave him my spare... guess what it was loaded with????:lmao: I keep forgetting to ask him what he thought of Scooter:rotfl2: He's more of a heavy metal sort a guy.

Thanks Jen, congrats on your success. I am really looking forward to the next year of training.

When did you all order shirts last year?

Kim

Yes, Sara, you are right. The shirts are a wicking cotton fabric. We made sure of the wicking when they were created! The thin wick shirts that you see a lot of are polyester.
:welcome: DisneyMomJan/Jan! You might be well our first "shirt" recruit!
:wave2: Jen! You are right, too, in that we had the choice of cotton T's or wicking T's. It was so great to see you get that medal!!!
Sunny,I knew you would jump in before I had finished composing!! The other lime green was from Joints in Motion. It's the only other group I saw with "our" color. They have black sides, and, like you said, not our backs!!
Kim, We actually ended up doing TWO shirt orders! It was great. With newcomers, there will probably be someone brave enough to start up a new order in a few months.

Hi everyone, great to hear all about last weekend. Made me wish I had started this earlier and tried it too!

Which leads me to asking this question, in the heat of reading the trip reports and seeing some of the pictures yesterday, my boss informed me that I get to go to California the first week in Feb for training. I, being somewhat addicted to all this, call the hotel first thing to find out if there is a nice jogging area anywhere nearby since it is just south of LA fairly close to the ocean. Turns out that the Pacific Shoreline marathon happens to be going on while I'm there. Before I knew what I was doing, I had registered to run the half and booked a hotel right next to the start line. (Luckily the full marathon was already booked full so thats not even a option for me!)

Am I crazy to try and run this already? My basic background is that I started run/walking last June a couple miles a day. For the last 60 days, I have been pretty steadily running 5 miles a day, and twice have run 10 miles (the last one at a 9:27 pace!). I think if I slow my pace down and just try to run easy 10 minute miles, I might be ok.

Any thoughts would be appreciated,
Mark

Susie- I'm thinking of doing the Nike Women's event in October, also.
Haven't decided if I want to do the full or the 1/2. I'm thinking the 1/2, as it could be a training run in getting ready for Goofy 08 (my feet can't believe I just typed that!:scared1: )

I can actually walk somewhat normally, now. The blisters are starting to heal.

Mark- I think you'll be just fine. My longest run was 10 miles before my half marathon in October. Just take it easy and have fun with it.

Just wanted to chime in on the shirt thing. I never end up wearing mine. I LOVE the shirt, I am just no fond of the material for running in. Now whatever material our WDW Marathon shirts were made of is REALLY comfortable. If we could get some shirts made out of that material and in that style I would be in heaven.

Christa - Funny you mentioned showing the girls how to pee!! As I was standing in line for the porta potties right before the race started I was REALLY getting nervous that we might not make it in time, and I thought about your comment earlier that morning about how you just learned how to pee without dropping trow. All I could think of was that I wished you were around so I could ask you how to do that!!

My family experience was a little different. My Uncle said, "If Dena's doing it, I KNOW I can do it!" Isn't family wonderful?!?!? Sigh... :rotfl: :rotfl:

Oh Dena, I just had to laugh out loud when I read this because DH and I had the same experience with one of our family members when we did the full. It's a wonderful thing when someone acknowledges all your effort and hard work, and is inspired by your determination to overcome challenges and complete your goals... :thumbsup2 It is quite another to hear - well, if they can do it, we can do it, too. Grrrr... ;)

As for all this shirt talk... I wore the WISH tank for the full in 06, and it felt great. (Of course, it was sooooo much better weather...) The only issue I had was that the material around the arm hole was a little thicker than the other tanks I had worn while training. I ended up with some chafing issues on the inside of my upper arms where it rubbed. For next year, I will definitely wear it for some of my longer runs, and might possibly do some experimenting with the arm holes. Of course, my fuel belt also had one area in the middle of my back that caused some chafing, and I now have a permanent Mickey scar right there - three perfect little circles forming a hidden mickey! :lmao:

Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend. Happy training!

The trick with the shirts is that it is very difficult to find CoolMax or wicking shirts in lime green that can be silk screened for a reasonable price. The Disney shirts are made by Champion. I would love to find an alternative that is not so scratchy or heavy. I'll see what I can find and invite others to do the same.

Wow! Who ever knew there was so much to this running shirt thing! You learn something new every day!

I too was thinking of what the actual Marathon shirts were made of...

I guess the only WISHers I ran into were wearing the cotton type...I wasn't aware that there was a Wicky one available! LOL!! I like the way that sounded! LOL!!

I was so bummed that I missed out on not ONE... but TWO shirt orders!! Darn.. I felt like the ugly stepchild without my shirt... but I was lucky enough to get a WISH bracelet.. made me feel a bit more like part of the gang :) Whoever thought up that saying for the back of the Shirt.. WOW.. what a brilliant mantra! And the Design was fabulous as well! Kudos.. I know I will be first on line to order mine next year... and would also be willing to help out with the whole process... just tell me what to do :)
