Wk of Jan 7--WISH Walking/Running Club

Hey everyone! I just wanted to pop in and say how great it was to see so many of you at the WISH meets on Friday and Monday! It was wonderful to talk in person, and get to know you all a bit better! We had a great weekend, and I have to admit that it was hard to be on the sidelines... I once again have medal envy!

For all the WISHers that raced this weekend - CONGRATULATIONS!!! This truly is a wonderful team, and you all did a FABULOUS job!!!! I love reading all the reports and I am constantly inspired by all of you! :cool1:

I will definitely be with you for Donald in 08! We'll see how fast I get back in after the baby. I would love to do RFTT in October, as well! (I have to see DH's medal hanging on the side of the mirror every morning - it's time to have one on my side!) ;)

For Mel and Lisa (and any other of my gator friends...) - congrats on the national championship! Whew! That was hard to say!!! :lmao:

Gotta go - the boy is calling...

Oh Terri, I feel your pain - after hobbling around CA and DL the day before the DL Half with my foot wrapped in complicated system of loo roll (oh no, do we need the 'english' dictionary again) to try and keep the pressure off the blister on the bottom of my foot - the best bit is when you realise your calf muscle is cramping while you hold your foot up. Thankfully I've never got a blister during a race, but I've run a few with them!!!

Anne: no, not moved to Oz yet, current plan is March/April this year - my only concern is that this might muck up my travelling to the Goofy which is putting me off going - although there's something very wrong about postponing your immigration plans around a race!!!! Tim has said though that I'm going whatever adding 'even if you have to go on your own at Xmas Eve and spend Xmas in Florida with one of your WISH friends and I'll see you just for the race week'. Be afraid Mel - be very afraid!!!!!!

Last night's run was only 5km in the end - though I think it still took me 40 minutes. A friend came back for her first run after a baby so I ran with her and didn't think her starting with 7km was the best plan!!!! Anyway, better get to work - Helen

Hi Lynnda,

That's great!! It was so great to me you and Bill!

I know about medal envy, that is why I did Goofy this year, but once is enough for me!

Take care of yourself and the wee one!

I wouldn't count on much sympathy-- she is a lean mean running machine:rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

M2cents: As you ease back into it, don't compare yourself to where you were before, that can get really frustrating. Just enjoy the process for what it is now. With EQ near by, you'll be whipped back into shape in no time!

:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:
Sunny - Have told Bree this too...It is hard not to compare and stress, but BREE DONT DO IT!:goodvibes LOVE YA GIRL! Friday!:hippie:

Anywho....
Did my race report on other thread so won't bore everyone again..... but WOW it was HOT!
I am always bummed after WDW marathon. Others don't bother me as much. I have a few pics but cannot post them yet b/c my AOL is acting up.

What other races are you guys and gals doing??
I will be doing:
"The shirt run" on the 27th...15 miles
a 1/2 in April and maybe March.
Trying to talk DH into letting me do MB Marathon on 2/10, but he is not for it. If it is cooler, I think it would be better for time. WDW was not a good race to try and PR b/c of the HEAT!

Judy! I hate I missed you too! Were you at BCV??? I did see WISHers, but I was out of it by that time so I cannot remember who was there.

Oh..Who was in EPCOT right b/4 the 26 mile marker. I saw some WISHers, and yelled to them, but I don't think they knew who I was.

Hi Christa - it was great to meet you this weekend. My family was in EPCOT right before the 26 mile point. My SIL (Cool Aunt) had on her WISH shirt, and one of my princesses princess:, DD9, had on her WISH shirt too (did you say that your daughter was named Maggie too?). I also saw Kathy/NYcpa, Lynne's/xterratri mom, right after I passed my family too - she was also in her WISH shirt. There was also someone in a WISH shirt standing next to my family too. My DW said she didn't catch the name of who that was, and I couldn't quite see when I passed. Who else was standing there?

OH it was great to meet you too! Yes my DD6.5 is Maggie!

We had such a great time seeing everyone! I just WISH I could have met more of you guys and gals!

Cam - I agree with Bree! You are a "Hard Core Runner" now! I mean falling and getting up and continuing! WOW! Show off the bloody socks!:rotfl:

We are still in DW. I'm dying to read everyone's posts and race reports. I had such a great time seeing everyone. I WISH you were all still here!!!!

Mel, we're still here, too! Doesn't it feel like you're the last one at a party after everyone else has left?? :confused3 I mean, we're in WDW which is great, but we had such a great time with all of you this past weekend, so it's a little sad everyone is gone.

Krista says hi, and she told me to tell you all that she'll write a race report on Sunday after we get back home. I'll post mine then, too. She also wanted me to tell you that today is the first day that she can bend down and touch her toes without everything in her legs hurting. :)

It's cooler here today, a high around 64 degrees. Would have been nice to have this weather say, maybe 4 days ago!!

Mel (not MelR), I still blame you for the race weather, what with all your wishing it would be warmer than last year's race. :)

Talk to you all later!

Steve

Melissa, Steve, Krista, you are all still there???

Wow, marathon weekend seems so long ago already?!?!? I am (or my kids are) back into violin and guitar lessons/ Scouts / Swim team and homework of course!

My DH was there, but I don't know if he was there when you passed. Heck he still may have been in Animal Kingdom waiting for me!! There was another group of WISHers that were sitting with them when I passed but for the life of me I don't remember who they were. I was so out of it by that point. I would love to know who it was, then I will have someone to back me up that my 2 yr old Lucas is the cutest little thing ever. They got to watch him try and finish the race with me!!

Hi everyone!

I just got back tonight! Had a great trip. I'll post my report later. I've got to go out to look for my cat now. DFIL accidentally let her out Monday night and he hasn't seen her since. :sad1:

Terri - I can identify with your pain. I have 4 blood blisters from Saturday's half. I had to walk the last 2 miles - more like hobble because the pain was pretty intense. What I don't understand is that I NEVER got blisters while training. I even did my 10 mile run in Orlando a few weeks before the half and never had a problem. I wore good socks and had on the same shoes. :confused3 I think it just must have been the heat and humidity. Ugh!

Christa--on my plate right now is the Little Rock Marathon March the 4th--possibly a 5K before that, not sure:confused3 --then depending on the cashflow, the Toad Suck Daze 10K and the Firecracker Fast 5K--and of course WDW Marathon in January!:cool1:

Hey, any of ya'll have any advice for blisters on the ends of toes??? Moleskins, maybe?? I'm one of those lovely people whose second toe is longer than the big toe, so it gets the most abuse--I have some little blisters on the end of the toe. Not painful, but I don't want them to get worse!

Got to get back into training mode. Saw the podiatrist today. He thinks my race problems with my feet were related to multiple factors...dehydration, new orthotics, shoes I'd never worn for LR, race conditions, etc. Says to take 3 weeks off from running and I really should consider skipping the Sarasota half  I told him this was race season down here and he recommended I look for some races at other times of the year, like in Seattle. I tried that one on DH with no luck  So, in an effort to be a good patient, I did 30 min on the TM today instead of 40 at an easy pace. :rolleyes1

:welcome: deekaypee! Yep, always room for more! I did the walker to runner thing, though not with Goofy.

Helen...you're more than welcome to come for Xmas. My home office is still sort of set up from when I used to write from home...you can even get some work done!

Cam...You never cease to amaze me. I wish I had a tenth of your strength and courage. I also wish I had known about your fall during the race. We could have done some quicky first aid at BCV. Anne and I stayed 'til the end...you and Rhonda were a good 10 minutes ahead of the sweeper bikes.

Krista...glad to hear you're recovering. I wish I could've stayed with you longer on the course (if that would've helped), but I couldn't leave the girls too long. You did a fabulous job with all the pain you were in!

Steve...yep, it was me! Now you know how WDW figures the average race temperature (29 last year, 67 this year...works out to about 48 average start :teeth: )

Colleen...I agree...I can't believe it's over and we're back to reality so soon.

Christa...I didn't see the Minnie on your list

Lynnda...definitely need your own RFTT medal! Thanks for the congrats...that must have been very difficult for you ;)

Bill...nope, it was hot enough for me last weekend. I'll settle for normal temps for the Sarasota half that I'm not supposed to run :rolleyes1

Sunny...that's a great quote...and what a wonderful letter from your mom!

Sara...those notes for your family were a really cool idea!

Stephanie...my cousin's husband is from the Little Rock area. He mentioned a 5K that he and his family do on the 4th of July. Wonder if it's the same one on your list?

Judy...the EMS guys were right and I would bet most of us left those races at least a bit dehydrate. Were you just drinking water? You may have been a little short of electrolytes like I think I was.

Speaking of which, I may have clued in a bit on what my problems have been the past 6 weeks. I tend to crash after the first hour on a long run...just like in the race. I actually drank Powerade and took a gel on the course for the very first time :crazy2: I felt better after the gel, so started wondering if maybe the Clif Bloks weren't right for me. Checked it out at home...they only have 20mg of potassium per serving...less than half of what's in most of the gels. So....I ordered a sample box of gels from gotbody.com. It's 4 different flavors from 4 different companies so I can try them out while I train for Sarasota. Hopefully, that will answer a lot of questions and solve a lot of training frustration that I've had this year.

Hey there everyone!

Since most of you are back from WDW - except for those lucky ducky few :thumbsup2 - we have restarted the get healthy Wish Group. It is a place for those that WISH to improve their eating along with their training.

With the New Year we are ready to get with it and support each other in sticking with our health plans be that dieting or something else while training.

If anyone would like to join us I have "borrowed" some of Cam's eloquent words and started the:

Working on Weight Loss During Training—New Year New Us! thread at:

http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1320625

Hope to see you there :goodvibes

mel--it's probably the same 5K--it's a great course--it's almost completely downhill and very fast (except the last half mile which of course is uphill) But on the downside it's blistering hot here in July--guess that'll prepare me for Disney in '08:rotfl2:

Hi everyone!!!! Stephen and I are still in Disney, not to make anyone jealous, but I'm sitting in our villa at the Boardwalk, just got back from Illuminations and heading to Animal Kingdom tomorrow.

I am feeling much better after the marathon; that was a brutal run!!! I'll do a full trip report when we get home, but to sum it up: I finished an hour plus my expected time due to the heat and my IT band hurting at mile 7. It was tough!!!!!! I don't know if I ever need to do another full marathon again, but I'm sure I'll be eating my words!!!!! :cutie: Like Stephen said, I can finally bend over and touch the ground with minimum pain, but even more exciting, I can go to the bathroom without any pain!!! I'm ecstatic about that!!!!! :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

It was great meeting everyone this weekend, aside from the heat and my injury, it was an awesome weekend and one I'll cherish forever. Thanks for taking the journey with me!!!!

Bree and Helen--Welcome back!!! I'm glad you are both running in 2008!!!

Dave--Sorry we didn't get to meet, I was looking forward to meeting you too. Definitely think about running the Flying Pig half, it's a wonderful course and a really fun race to run. I don't think it ever reaches capacity until the day of, so you have lots of time to think about it.

Mel--Thanks for walking with me during the marathon--that was a HUGE morale booster!! I was in a LOT of pain (in fact I started crying around mile 16 and cried all the way to the finish) and having you with me for just that little bit was great. Thanks to the entire Wish team, knowing you were at mile 24 got me through the long course.

I better get off here, Expedition Everest will be calling my name in the morning!! I'll write more on Sunday when we get home and pick up my boy from the kennel! :dogdance: :dogdance: :dogdance:

Thanks for the sympathies everyone. I can finally put my heels down when I walk. That's a big break for my calf muscles. :)
I'm gonna try to get to the local running store and/or my foot dr. to see if I should be wearing a different kind of running shoe. The Kayanos were very comfy and I didn't really have any major problems in training (just one blister and I can't remember what shoes I wore when I got that). But someone suggested I go now, so they can see where the blisters are. Boy, are they in for an ugly site :rolleyes1

What do you all think about them running out of water and/or cups at some of the aid stations? The one aid station on the way to AK was completely empty, the station at mile 20 had no cups and I think there was 1 or 2 others that were out of cups.

Now, I work an event, so I know those things can happen. But, the weather forecast was for temps in the 80's. That was the forecast for 10 days prior, so they should have made plans to have extra water/cups/powerade, especially for the latter half of the full. And even if they did run out, I'd have thought they could have pulled some water from the supply for the parks (I know they're probably separate entities, but rather worry about transferring costs for supplies than have someone collapse because there was no water.) Plus, before the race they kept saying if you're on the course for more than 4 hours, drink Powerade. But they couldn't mix the powerade w/o the water and cups.

I'm just glad I kept my water bottle instead of chucking it, or I'd have been in trouble a lot earlier than I was. At least the stops that had no cups would fill up my bottle.

None of that caused me to DNF, but I just think it was poor planning not to adjust to the temp. forecast. Those of us who are 5,6 or 7 hour marathoners need that stuff!

Terri

Hi all---I know I have said this earlier this week, but hearing all of your stories from the weekend is awesome!! You are all amazing. After lurking on the board for quite awhile, I would like to become a more active poster! I even started a WISH journal to track my progress.

Currently, I am signed up for the following races this year:

March 18- Hillsdale, NJ 5K
April 29- Long Branch, NJ Half Marathon
Jan. 2008-WDW Marathon

This will be my first half marathon ever, I am very excited! I also plan on doing some other races throughout the year to prepare for the marathon.

Thanks to all of you for the motivation to do this!!!

Laurie

Good Morning team!!!!

Well I couldn't get the MFM book but I did get one by Jeff Galloway called Marathon You can do it. Looks good. Has anyone read it?? What did you think???

Glad to hear everyone is starting to feel better I have to admit after reading all the trip reports I am terrified, do I need to be scared????? But what what an inspiration you all are!!!!!:grouphug:

Is there anyone on board here that went from from being a walker to being able to do the marathon?? I am starting to get scared and the marathon is a year away.

Please help relieve my fears you guys are the best.

Kim

I did! I started last January walking 2 miles a day after no exercise for years. I finished the marathon in 5 hours and 5 min. I had a lot of ups and downs over the course of last year. Including 2 months where I had to do water running in a pool because of severe shin spints, but I did it.
