Wk of Jan 7--WISH Walking/Running Club

Cheryl (Cherylbug) and I just registered for the 2008 1/2 Marathon.

Does anyone know when we can register for the Family 5k? I couldn't find anything about it on the website.

Thanks,
Christy

Congrats to everyone who just finished the marathon weekend! Y'all are so inspiring. :cheer2:

Can anyone join in on these threads? My husband and I just decided last week that we're going to go for the DL Half Marathon this year. We're total newbies, though, so I'm not sure how well that will go. I'm excited to try! Is 9 months enough time to go from total couch potato to running 13.1 miles?

We're also kicking around the idea of doing the WDW Half in 2008. Great excuse to finally get my WDW trip! Plus, with Donald being my favorite character, what better medal to go for, right? :)

Welcome back all!

Well I am still knocked up...will be for the next three months.

This weeks training for me commences with some veggies (on a tomato/mozzarella with balsamic vinagrette kick) and fruit.

However, I started rough this morning. Breakfast was the remaining hunk of chocolate chip bundt cake from Publix. Gotta carb load and all.:rolleyes1

This morning's cross training was resuming the homeschooling schedule post-holiday.

And like any great athlete after a hard workout--I relaxed all afternoon doing nuttin'.

Hubby is on the treadmill right now walking....I shall live vicariously through him--using the Music Man's "Think system" and a little bit of Garfields studying via osmosis.

Baby is presently cross training with a bit of third trimester amniotic aerobics.

Dearheart--my hubby was king of the couch potatoes..and HATES to sweat....and he surprised me last year registering for the half over the summer and was trained within 5 months. Now I won't say he enjoyed the last bit b/c he was tired and ready to quit (but I'm queen of "let's keep it going")....my time in my siggy was his time--though they have him finishing before me in the standings.

You have plenty of time---to get ready and complete 13.1 miles.

I suggest marathoning for mortals by John Bingham!

I'm back! No time for details yet. Just the facts:

Half alerts didn't come throuh:confused3
I finished 3:06
Paul finished 2:48

My Full:
01:11:20@5 Mile, Pace 14:16.
03:05:56@Half, Pace 14:11.
05:02:50@20 Mile, Pace 15:08.
06:51:36@Finish, Pace 15:41.

That was cutting it close! I didn't think I would/could do it, and I was ready to quit at mile 23 but by that point I had invested 36 miles into this crazy challenge so... I am officially GOOFY!

Vic-- We hit the lobby exactly at 5AM along with about a dozen other runners. As we exited, men in yellow shirts started yelling at us "hurry, that's the last bus, run! get on it, NOW!" One runner replied, "we're walking over" and the yellow shirt said, "Can't let you do that, this is your last bus to get to the race". So we got on!

Well I'm back on the team, I've just entered Goofy 08 - so Mel, put me down for the 'slightly deranged' squad.

Yeh Sunny, I've kind of missed out on the end of last year but I know it was tough for you, but I'm pretty sure no-one doubted that you'd do it, you're the most determined person I know!!!

And Bree - welcome back, I know the feeling of the burning lungs, had it yesterday as I skipped running for a month, but I haven't even got a baby as an excuse - although my waistline could say otherwise!!!

In other news, I did my own little marathon last year - it wasn't planned, but it kind of turned out that I went to every Disney park in the world in 2006! none of them beat Florida though. I'm already counting days until I get there. Helen

OH SUNNY - YOU DO IT WAY TO GO GIRL!!!!!!!!!!!!!:cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2:

After all you have been through this year the fact that YOU DID IT is simply amazing!!!!!!! I am soooo pround of you - you are my inspiration - I will be there next year!

:welcome: to blueroses, westcliffemom and TXAng!

Welcome back to Susan, Bree, Helen and Lisa!!

Great to see so many new and returning people signing on for next year!

Minnie...how ya been feelin?

Helen...I like your kind of marathons :woohoo:

Bree...tough to run with the likes of Evil Queen ;)

Lisa...are you planning half, full or Goofy?

Stacey...ask away! We'll probably need to just have one Minnie thread at some point...two is too hard to keep up with.

Sunny...you did great! I was glad to see you on the course during the full!

Ang...anyone can certainly join in! Marathon weekend would be a great time for your first trip!

Christy...I haven't seen anything on the 5K yet. Maybe they'll have more info later.

Stephanie...great pace on your run! Great advice on the Kegels!

Kelley...congrats on signing up for the full. I'm still debating.

I'm also rethinking my training strategies. Learned a few things during the half that I'm going to try to change for my upcoming half in March. If things go well, I may just register for the full :scared:

No problemo. The truth of the matter is, I chickened out. :sad2: The more I thought about it, the more concerned I got. So, I decided to get up earlier and take the bus. I wish I could've gotten word to you. Please accept my apology.

Ha! Now MelR can call you a wuss, too;) Last year I said I was gonna walk and I chicken out and MelR said, "I knew you wouldn't walk". I think it has something to do with my type D personality:rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: I refuse to call myself type A!

No apology needed... you think I woulda stood around waiting for ya? ;)

Oh thank you, Helen! I've missed you! I'm so glad you are on board for '08.

The gist of my year is I went from being a pain in the butt to having a pain in the butt-- that extends down both legs. Come to think of it, I didn't actually give up the "being" part in the transition.

Sunny

I am beyond sleep deprived-- which will be explained in my official race report. But just a quick thought before I go to bed. I saw the best quote on the back of many shirts on both courses:

Marathon: The triumph of desire over reason.
I can't even begin to tell you how true that statement was for me this year. It made me cry every time I saw it!

Ok, Goofy or not, I better get some sleep before I become totally derranged.

Sunny

Thank you so much, Minnie

Yes you will be there next year:wizard: :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: !!!!!

Sunny - CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! You did it!

Minnie - Your sig says Wilderness Lodge in June. When are you going? We'll be there the 7th-13th!

I'm on board for the half, but not ready to register yet. Have to figure out how to work in another trip when I just booked the summer one! And I'll have to give up the Minnie this year since we'll be there in June. I started running again yesterday after a 6 week hiatus - took the dog for her shots after Christmas and she'd gained 7 lbs (she only weighed 50 to start!), so I promised her she could run too, just not all the time. We did a quick 2.5 miles in honor of all you marathon runners!

Jackie

Hey everyone,

Sunny- congrats on being goofy!!! :thumbsup2 You know I just don't think I could get away with saying that to someone anywhere else. :rotfl: I'm so glad to hear that you made it and can't wait to read your report.

Does anyone know if by some strange possibility there are any WISH bracelets left? I can't remember who was handling them for us.

And guess what? You guys have inspired me to get back out there after a loooong lazy spell. I was trying to use the pregnancy as a excuse to completely quit for a while, but now I'm just calling the new little one my training partner! :lmao: While I'm not doing much, I've only been walking for 1 mile a day, I'm back out there! I figured if I wanted to be 1/2 marathon ready for 2008 then I sure couldn't start from ground zero after giving birth in July. Right?

Love you all!

Minnie Questions:

Did we ever find out if there are any advantages to registering as a team vs individual?

What time should we be at the start?

I'm sure I'll think of more later, this is my first event ever ever!

Don't know if there's an advantage yet. They didn't do the team thing last year. So far, looks like special race bib and eligibility for team awards.

I would say by 6:00am. They had buses last year if you want to park at EPCOT and ride over to the start at AK.

Dena...I have a few of the medium green/black WISH bracelets, I think one all-green medium is left and plenty of the large in both colors. I do have a few of the kids size as well.

Kevin...how are you doing?

Hi Everyone-

I am back from Orlando. I even refused to wear a coat out of the airport because I was beginning to think I would never be cold again.

I will post a race report on the Official thread for that. Let's just say it wasn't pretty but I finished in 4:57.

I ran with TNT (the purple team) and I have the most amazing stories to tell you about my fellow team mates and how incredible the entire experience was because of them. I had great respect for TNT before the race but now, well, lets just say I am completely sold on the organization. My coaches were absolutely amazing and I can not say enough good things about them.

I haven't made up my mind about next year yet.

Sorry I didn't meet up with everyone after the race, but they made me go to the Med tent and it took me a while to escape, by then most people were gone.

Congratulations Everyone!

Cecilia

Officially back to reality this morning:surfweb: !!

DH and I will be back in '08. I will do the full and DH will do the half.

We had an amazing marathon weekend and obviously the best part of the weekend was spending time with our WISH friends.

Thank you so very much to all of the WISH'ers who were out supporting our team on the course both days:grouphug: . The only blister I came home with is the one on my left index finger from ringing a cow bell for hours on end:rotfl2: .

Congrats to all of those who reached their goals:banana: .

I got so many comments on the WISH shirts and many people said it was the best shirt they had seen. I felt very proud to be a part of our TEAM.

I finished with a 4:45 marathon time.

Pilates class for me this morning. I am hoping to run in the a.m. tomorrow.

Looking forward to running the Minnie in May:thumbsup2 .

Hi, everyone!
I am sorry I haven't posted earlier. I have so much to say and I don't even know where to start. Even as I sit here trying to organize my thoughts, I am sobbing loudly enough that I am worried about waking Carrie and Scott (our villa mates -- love you guys!)
Without getting into too many gruesome details right now, I want to say that being a part of this WISH team made my marathon weekend experience the most incredible, rewarding experience of my life. I seriously mean it when I say that I would not be sporting my shiny new Mickey medal without all of you. And you guys will never believe the heroic effort it took on Rhonda's part to get us to the finish line. The woman epitomizes the words "friend," "teammate," "loyalty" and "determination." The marathon itself was the most challenging, awful experience of my life. Doing it with Rhonda and sharing the first many miles with Lily and Pat and having the support of the WISH team all the way through the finish and beyond made it the most miraculous, rewarding experience of my life. It was gruesome. Beyond a doubt the worst experience of my life. Even more so than when I thought I might die of my heart condition. At least that would have been quick and painless. And in heaven there is no pain! I took a bad fall right before mile 7 and shouldn't have finished the race (Rhonda would have had an official finish time without me, but that's another story), but we stuck it out and I have my medal.

Both of my hands and one knee are bandaged. 6 of my fingers are black from the impact (I can't believe they didn't break). Until yesterday afternoon, I thought my left shoulder should be slinged. My right wrist should probably have been wrapped. My sneakers and socks are ruined with blood.

It's funny, my mantra was "the pain and exhaustion are temporary, but the pride of finishing is forever." I told every medical personnel who approached me that I would get medical attention after I got my Mickey medal.
And I think I prayed "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me" at least 40 times.
It was the hardest thing I have ever done in my life. It was, therefore, the most rewarding.
More later. Love you all!
