Wk of Jan 29--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

Liz-WTG! You are doing awesome :thumbsup2

Dave-Great job on pace! Make sure you're not going too fast, too soon. You have plenty of time to get that pace up.

Jodi-you did all that before you go to work! Wow, impressive

Last night I had my swimming lesson. It was awesome!!!!! After only 1 lesson I went from swimming 25 yds & being totally out of breath to almost being able to swim 100 yds and feel better than I did w/25. I was soooo excited when I got home. I'm ready to kick some TRI butt now! Lynne, when you're right, you're right! And all this was after I had done 30 min on bike & my ST in the a.m.

MelR-the other lady that was in the class with me was there to train for a tri too, but I thought of you when she told me what kind. She is training for an "off road" tri & instead of swimming they are kayaking. (She was swimming to work on upper body strength) Her race is somewhere in NC. Sounds kind of like one of your adventure races :goodvibes

Christa-there is a McDonalds on WDW property. Maybe next year we can get them to change to course so it goes by there & we can stop for a Big Mac to carbo load during the race :teeth: Oh-and you do not have a big butt!

Cam-I think that is cool and insane! (of course most people think that of me when I tell them about the races I'm doing) Good luck & don't shock that heart too much. :lovestruc I'm glad to hear Howard is loving his job. I know that makes long hours so much easier to handle. Good luck w/DD. I remember me & my mom fought constantly from 13 until I turned 19. Now we're great friends. Hang in there in only a few more years she'll turn human again ;)

Oh my gosh- all the talk of butts... :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

Judy- congrats on the new baby. I had dreams of brushing horses after I saw the pictures.

I was wondering if you experts had any suggestions- I walked my first half without training and did okay. I started training a few weeks ago. I have signed up for the Chicago Marathon and again for the WDW half. Do you think it would be too much to do the Chicago Distance Classic at the half way point in training for the full Chicago Marathon?

I don't want to do too much- and could be convinced either way to do the Distnance Classic. I would appreciate any suggestions.

I am also the one with cyst on my knee.

Thanks!
Celeste

Oh no, the workout was from last night.....did I forget to write that? Silly me :teeth: Just had to post in the morning because I didn't have time last night. :goodvibes

I've started following this thread with curiosity because I want to run the Minnie in May. I need you experts to help me! A long time ago I ran 5K races and over the years have run off and on. The last time I was in really good shape, running and WT was about 5 years ago. Then I had my 4th baby and well, I'm now 20 pounds heavier and I am trying to get back in shape. I've been jogging/walking, doing the elliptical for 4 weeks now. Up to about 50 minutes daily. My walk/jog pace averages 10:30 for 3 miles. I don't think I will have trouble finishing the race in the time allotted but I want to build my stamina and would really like to do it strong. I thought I was on a good plan but after reading many posts about fat burning vs. cardio levels etc. now I'm confused. Of course I would love to lose the weight along the way but I only have 14 weeks left to be ready. Any hints or suggestions? I thought I should be working on increasing my time whether it was jogging or any times of cardio. Thanks for any input. My dream is to run thru Disney. I gave up on the 1/2 marathon in 2005 even though I was registered. I just didn't have time to train. I really want to do this 15K. I know I can do it!!!
Thanks all!!

Wow, you really do need to check in twice a day to keep up!

Christa - thanks for the info on how you track your runs. I really want to order a garmin, but my frugal side is telling me to hold off. Right now I am on the treadmill at the gym and I am sure the tracking is close enough. Living in chicago, I don't think I will be outside for at least another 6 weeks or more.

Sunny - Thanks for sharing your story. I have read your posts in amazement! You have come a long way in 4 years. You are an athlete!

MelR - Good luck with your race!

Celeste - Good news on your MRI. Does a bakers cyst limit mobility? Cause any pain? I am not very familiar with them.

Liz - magic beans - sounds so disney like! Great job on 7 mi.! A little pd :wizard: to get/keep your diabetes under control.

Honeibee - Way to go on your running! Your posts make me smile everyday. :sunny: Congrats on your new horse!

MelR & Sunny - I like what you said about athlete in training. When my r/w gets difficult, I try to tell myself I am in training. I feel like I hold my head just a little higher now. I used to be concerned with what those around me at the gym were doing/thinking. I am now much more focused on my personal goal. Boy, it feels great.

Dave - I have also spent the last ten year fighting inactivity vs. activity. I am really hoping joining the WISHers will help keep me on track. It has been almost a month now. The biggest struggle I have is leaving my Dh with the kids as well. It is hard and I feel guilty a lot. Mine are 2, 4, and 15. The 15yr old still requires as much parenting as the little ones. It is just different types of needs. My 15 yr old is a girl - my best advice is to keep a straight face, don't get worked up or emotional too. This just feeds into the drama. Yes, most girls are drama queens - not just yours. princess:

Cam - Very neat. Great cause. I observed a group do this in lake michigan. Watching was enough for me! Here's to a heat wave for you! :wizard:

Did get my r/w in yesterday and am back on my training schedule. Boy will I be glad when my dh is back in town! 8 days is way too long!!! Off to register for the Chicago distance classic!

Sunny - Throw a pink towel over your head. If you can see yourt problem it can't see you , right? ;) (Hopefully, your familiar with Hitchikers or else I just made a really stupid comment. ;) )

Don't panic! I know where my towel is at ;) (and the answer is 42).

Dave-- Awsome!

Christa-- you are way too hard on yourself!

Maggie-- Great accomplishment, focusing on your own goals and losing sight of those around you at the gym. I remember that transition, too. Its a great feeling.

Jodi-- great job on the TM and cross-training :thumbsup2

TiffJ-- I should sign up for swimming lessons, too. You've sold me! Way to go!

Cam-- I hope all goes well for your adventure! How daring! But how cool to do it as a family.

Hi everyone! :wave2: I hope your all well. I am doing good, trying to adjust to my eatign plan! (WW). I have also been exercising reg. and thanks to
sara :thumbsup2 I now have the MFM book!
Sara was nice enough to send me her copy cause funds are tight here!
thanks again! :thumbsup2
So far, I love this book! I am only up to chapter 4 and getting excited about which plan may be right for me! I am still doing my 3 miles on the TM and although, this week I wanted to bring it up a notch, I am waiting to see what the book suggests. For now, I am comfy with what I am doing!
anyway, I hope your all well :grouphug: , I'll check back in later this week.

take care
:thumbsup2

Good Morning All: :surfweb: I'm taking a little break from work, and checking up on my running/walking club friends.

TiffJ, Christa, and Sunny - thanks for the encouragement and advice!

Maggie - My DD8 princess: is also named Maggie (short for Marguerite) - so I chuckle a little when I hear you talking about the drama queens.

So I have to confess my motivation to get all there and walk was little yesterday. I went down to the fitness center here at work at the end of the day, and all the treadmills were signed out. Previously, I would have said forget about it, but because I now feel accountable to you guys I decide to go outside to the track. It wasn't near as cold as I thought, and I ended up adding another 1/2 mile to my walk. It felt great, thanks for the motivation everyone! Plus, after my 2.5 mile walk, I picked my DD5 princess: up from daycare to take her to her ice skating lessons. She saw her bike in the back of the car and asked if we could go to the track. I said I just went, and she got really sad saying, "I wanted to go to the track with you. I thought I was your running buddy." She just about broke my heart. I promised to take her with me today after work, and threw the sand toys and stomp rockets in the back of the car already.

I'm not too concerned about my pace right now. I'm really trying to build up my legs and cardiovascular fitness this month. My plan is to just walk this month of February, build myself up to 3 miles, and then start mixing in the running. I do find myself wanting to run some, but I'm remembering those shin splints from last year and telling myself to take it slow. I'm training for endurance.

Have a great day everyone.

Good morning.

Sunny & Christa - I find it hard to believe EITHER of you have any excess pounds. You are AMAZING athletes! However, you do give me hope... And for that I thank you. :goodvibes

Maggie - I'm glad my posts make you smile.
:teeth:
To everybody struggling with DDs & DSs....... :wizard: I have four stepchildren. I find it amazing I don't drink heavily.

Cam - OMG! OMG! Great cause, but OMG! You are a brave woman! You MUST find someone to take pictures!

This morning's TM session went like this: For the first 18 minutes I didn't notice DH had left the treadmill at a 1.5 incline, which made me happy because hey, I didn't even notice! So I did 45 minutes at 3.7 then ran for FIVE mintes :woohoo: at 4.2! Geez, maybe someday I could RUN a Half. Can you imagine!?!?!?!? :yay:

Thanks for everyone who had a look at Mist. Now I just have to pass the stable inspection, which I am pretty confident won't be a problem.

Great job Dave! I knew you were up for it! Your plan sounds good. There are some great run/walk and walk/run plans in the MFM book.

debM, welcome! :wave2: Wow, four kids and only 20 pounds, I had 20 pounds on after one! You are doing wonderfully well, 10:30 pace for 3 miles is awesome. Ask lots of questions here, we have great, knowledgeable people among us. :thumbsup2

Judy, I had no doubt in my mind that you will be run/walking in January. :cheer2: You are just going to get stronger!

I tutored at my son's school this morning and am now waiting :rolleyes1 for my Sears repair man to come fix my microwave for the 4th time! I hate waiting, :fish: I guess I should be making myself productive and clean the bathrooms or vacuum :sad2: I would rather be at the gym.

Hi everyone – the whiner is back in the thread

My visit with the sports ortho was mixed results at best. He said that the shot may have missed the spot so that’s why it may not be working but it is too soon to give another :guilty:

He thinks I have a major hip bursitis that is flared up and causing the radiating pain in the groin, leg, knee and back. He said I could also have a muscle issue with my hip/rear but is unsure. He gave me a new anti-inflammatory drug and sleep medication due to the pain. I have to go to PT 3x a week starting next week to have therapy done on my back/hip. He said an MRI would be inconclusive at this point due to the inflammation.

I told him I want to run the ½ in STL in April and the Minnie in May and he wasn’t real optimistic about either at this point :sad2:

Has anyone ever had this before :confused3 He said it very common in women how participate in running sports.

Cam - I missed teh polar bear thing. Brrrr... Good for you. You will look fine in a suit! Besides, what' you;re doing is too important to worry about the suit. Heck, look at my marthon pics. Not exactky looking my best, but don't care either. ;)

Hello my fellow athletes!
Went swimming today. Did 2250 yards! I only know this b/c the pool is 25 yrds long...I count 1 lap as back and forth (so 1 lap is 50 yrds)..and I did 45 laps. Am I rambling?
Will run long tomorrow..not sure how long, trying to get Bree to go like 15 or 20, but I don't know if that will work! Oh..she misses you guys, has to work! :sad2: We went to lunch and got sushi today..Oh I got my grub on! If anyone needs help understanding my southern lingo or misspelled words let me know. :confused3

Melissa, I thought about your advice while I was swimming. The advice was not to look at the male bikers who did not change out of their speedos.. :rotfl2: I cracked up in mid lap. I almost drank the whole pool! :lmao: Uck...
Great luck on your race this weekend. I wish I was there with you! :thumbsup2

Judy - congrats on your run! You are amazing!

Minnie - pixiedust: pixiedust: pixiedust: pixiedust: for you! I am praying they can figure out what is wrong.

Colleen - Waiting and cleaning gets in the way of my training...maybe we could count it as xtraining!

debm - WTG on your pace! Oh..and :welcome: ! I say you will loose weight b/c of the running. Just eat right! Do as I say, not as I do! :lmao: Your 10:30 pace is AWESOME! just build on the milage. I say you will have NO problem! :cheer2:

Later all!
Christa

Deb - welcome!!!! Sounds like you are well on your way with your training for minnie!

Judy - I forgot to tell you congrats on the horse. i got so wrapped up in checking out the goofy results post (you know, me, me, me) that i forgot who i was going to talk to in the next post. That is so wonderful that you are getting mist! I felt really naieve (sp?) looking at that web site. I guess i just didn't realized what horrible things people choose to do to animals! Mist is lucky to be going to such a wonderful home (i know b/c i've seen the pics!) Congrats on the 5mins too!!! Next week, I'll be singing the dougie fresh song w/ it's intended lyrics!!! :rotfl2:

Sunny - the knee feels much better today. i confessed to EC that i had strained it mt. biking. she was not happy. I actually messed w/ her a little today by falesly crying out "oh my knee!" she didn't really laugh. I guess that is b/c she has done 15 miles of trail with the real "ms. oh my knee" and it was not pretty! BTW, I've seen you butt in person and it is NOT big!

Christa - sorry i tortured you with the speedo mental imagary. for some reason, the thought of others sharing in my suffering just gives me a tiny bit of joy. now, by telling you about the speedo thing, i've basically ensured that you will see it!!! sorry it made you choke. BTW, i've seen you butt in person too and it is NOT big

Cam - That is a true adventure! Have fun and PLEASE find someone to take pics!!!!!!

JodiS - great job on your workout

Jodi - no, still not yet!!!!

Lily - WHERE ARE YOU??????
Liz - WHERE IS LILY?

Hi, everyone!
Just wanted to congratulate everyone who is walking, running, biking, swimming, kayaking, strength training, or cross-training by trying to keep up a home or keep up with kids.
I feel like the spikes in my BP due to stress MUST result in some burned calories, but alas, I guess not.
I am glad I did strength training yesterday morning, because I never got out of work until after 8 pm, so I missed my desperately needed yoga/pilates class. It is only given once a week at a time I can try to make it, so I am royally bummed.
Hoping that by the end of next week I should be a little less harried and more able to fit in workouts.

As for everyone who was kind enough to ask about DD17's college application process (here or in PMs), I wanted to let you know that in mid-March she should start hearing from her preferred choices. There was an interesting article in today's News Journal discussing the difficulty in-state students are having trying to get into our state university. The admissions office literally told us that if it came down to deciding between Jenn and an equally qualified student from Wisconsin, that the Wisconsin student would get the spot. I think there is something wrong about that. Turns out the state legislature thinks there is something wrong about that, too. In case you are curious, the article is here:
UD Pressured Over In-State Admissions

ETA: I've decided I really like this picture. It captures our excitement of being at the Expo and having race numbers. Of course, it also shows what a HOTTIE I get to go home to every night!

Lily has been a very busy person. Some of you may or may not know that her son was in a snowboarding accident and had surgery Monday. He now has a pin and a screw in his shoulder and has been in LOTS of pain. She has been busy dealing with him and all of that...and work has been a little crazy for her too....I am sure she could use a little extra :wizard: this week if anybody has any to spare.

Thanks Liz for telling us! Definitely some extra :wizard: :wizard: here for Lily and her son.

Cam, great picture, you are right about DH, smokin'! :cool2:

MelR, good luck with the race! I hope the weather holds out for you.

Christa 2250 yards of swimming!!! That is awesome. You and Tiff have inspired me to take lessons and get into that pool! There is a triathon in Valdese, NC that I am thinking about doing. But I haven't actually swam "a lap" in years. A friend of mine is a big swimmer and she said she would take me to the pool to help me with my breathing and turns.

Minnie, so sorry what you are going through. Tell all those medical people enough is enough and you want to get healthy already! :wizard:
