Wk of Jan 29--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

Sunny - vasoline! Duh, i didn't even think of that. I'll give that a go next weekend. i won't have to make a special trip or special order to get it! That is really cool about your dad. Next time in Walmart, i'll check it out!
I wish my mom would run with me. that is a great legacy you a passing to your daughter. I begged my mom to do the 1/2 next year and she said no way!!

Hi everyone,

Hopp everyone is having a fabulous weekend. The weather here has been very wet but it is in the upper 30s/lower 40s in January :cool1:

I just got back from the Y. I got to RUN for the 1st time in 2 months  . I am sore and my DR will not be happy but I got to RUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Then I took my DS swimming for an hour afterward so I am very sore and my hip is screaming at me but it was so worth it :thumbsup2 Tomorrow I will likely be whining but today was so great!!!!!!

Mel - I got my bg at the running shoe store. But I have seen it at Footlocker and Dicks.

Sunny - That info on your dad was so cool. Thanks for sharing :cool1:

Carrie - I am so happy that you got your foot problem solved. Being on the injured list is no fun :rolleyes1

DisneyGirl - I have always wanted to give Pilates a try but never have. In my younger years I was in ballet and I know how much those exercises help your core. I will have to check it out. Do you know of a good starter video?

IC - I'm looking for tickets for March, May, and June or July so I've got my eyes open ready to pounce on a great deal. So far no look though :badpc:

Cam - It looks like you will be there right after me. We are trying to 3/24-3/27 for a quick trip during DS spring break and after audit season for me!!!

Can someone tell me how I will know when there are DING fares? I haven't received any notifications at all and when I clicked on the program this morning it just said no new notifications or something like that. :confused3:

See if you can change your home airport to Orlando, maybe. I get multiple dings daily for all over the place all of the time. I don't think it matters what direction you originate b/c most (if not all) of the time, the route is priced separately in both directions--but always appears that way so you can do a RT ticket.

I start training tomorrow :)

I was yucky sick Thursday night and Friday. So that ceased my workouts for last week.

Back on for tomorrow with a 30 minute 3:2 R/W intervals. :)

Minnie Make sure your DING registration is set for either Chicago/Midway or Orlando. When you click on the DING there is a spot in the upper right hand corner for update registration. Click on that and see if your home airport is set for Chicago or Orlando. If it's not you can change it. Once you change it, just wait a couple minutes and you will get the new DING for that market. I hope it works for you because I think it is only good until 6pm CST.

Sunny have you found that the vaseoline stains? That would be my only concern. One benefit of the BG is that it has zinc oxide in it, which is what we use to help heal irritated skin in hosptials~ also what is in the diaper cream. I had considered using the vaseoline for the marathon but was concerned with it staining or getting kind of melty. (yes I know, thin coat)

It was also cool to read about your dad- too bad he didn't have the patent stuff. I have seen bars like this for emergency survival kits.

Ever since you mentioned the Tae Bo (?sp) I have been interested and found your comment about him saying nice things funny. I know Wal-Mart has a couple of DVDs- which do you have and which do you like best?

Thanks!

Can I post here?
I'm signed up for the 2007 1/2 and am a beginner's beginner! I mean, I'm starting off with the run walk schedule!! I am hoping to shed some lbs. and get more fit as I train to do this next January.

I have no garmin and no ipod thingee so I see I have some purchases to look into! :)

Did you all use an ipod to run with this year (at WDW?) I know the rules said none were allowed but I saw pleanty anyway.

Any advice for a newbie? I am not sure whether I'll be running, walking or waddling in January but I do hope to be doing one of those!

Minnie-- I have never used a Pilates video, so I can't really personally recommend any, but I've heard great things about Windsor Pilates!!

Buckalew11-- Welcome!! At this point, you don't have to make a decision on how you are going to make the distance, but what is important is that you are out there and getting ready!! It's a great motivation to get moving and get ready!!

Welcome Buckalew11 (and any other newbies I missed)!

Start of slow--start off with minimal--if you think you might enjoy running--start off with jogging or wogging or intervals. If you don't think it is for you start off with some walking.

I know everyone is excited about the gadgets and these gadgets cost money. I recommend newbies to start simple and if they find this as addicting as all of us here do--that is the time to spring for the "tech" stuff.

Good shoes are a must. In the very beginning--what you get at Sears or Footlocker will work for now. But before long--you will need something BETTER. Yes--the infamous $80 to $100+ running shoe--even if you are a walker.

The rules recommend against IPOD used-but technically--we have discovered through wording in the literature provided that it is actually discouraged and not banned. I would like an ipod--just haven't gotten around to getting one yet. Many use them and enjoy them. You can find that the songs you load are just what you need to keep yourself on tempo and moving swiftly.

This is the "training to train" period. No official programs to start until ~Aug/Sep for the full and something like Sep/Oct for the half. For right now--it means get your body moving--get yourself some fitness, get in some weight training (nothing too heavy--but you can withstand a little more now than you will be allowed while in season), heavy on the cross training (i.e. keep the walk/run days to about 3 days--it is sufficient for now)--just to get all the systems going.

If you have a goal to lose weight--NOW is the time to do it. I had to look up the difference between a fat burning and cardio workout for another poster today. They didn't understand why you need a lower heart rate if you want to burn fat--while a heart rate on the higher end promotes cardio work and you don't. The answer is--b/c in the lower ranges of your exercising heart rate--fat is the fuel for that workout. In the mid to higher ranges--carbohydrate is the fuel (aka glycogen hence the carb loads and refueling with gels and nutrition bars). By default endurance training is not a fat burning workout. It is designed to make your body go farther for longer. So if you wish to lose weight--between now and September that is the goal. All bets are NOT off once training starts--but you are better served by not purposefully trying to fat burn and lose the pounds while actively training for an event.

HTH!!!

And welcome everyone!

Thanks! I am wondering about the cute clipart. Is anyone welcomed to use it or do I need to ask someone specific about using it? TIA

Oh, and my real name is Brenda. Please feel free to use it. :)

Lisa, thanks for all that info! You were so helpful to me when I was just going down for marathon weekend to watch. The atmosphere was too much for me. DH has run 3 Fulls and each time I felt like I wanted to be participating~ just so exciting!

Anyway, I have some good NB shoes but will be looking into new ones soon. I will hold off on the gadgets until I see how I do with all of this.

Any advice pops into anyone's minds, please post it for me. Right now I feel like a sponge and there is a lot to read about running/races etc.

Celeste-- I haven't noticed stains, it (vasoline) can cause "wet spots" but I sweat so much that all my clothes are wet spots by the end anyway. I use it for any LR over 14 miles. As for TaeBo I have many DVDs. I think my favorite is Tae Bo Cardio, I also have Capture the Power and Get Ripped basic and advance and the boot camp series. There's another one I can't remember off hand but really like. I get back to you :)

Minnie-- yeah! you got to run. Oh I hope you aren't too sore tomorrow! :wizard:

Welcome Brenda! Glad you joined us.

Yes we are wishing Dad held the patent :( That's the problem for creating things for the goverment, they own it, not you.

I'm off to help DS collect 100 things to celebrate 100 days of school.

Welcome Brenda! :wave2:
Ask lots of questions. There are a lot of knowledgeable people here.

Well, I did eventually get that nasty cold that most of you have had. My nose and eyes watered all day yesterday and today. I didn't want to get out of bed this morning. I couldn't even think about running.

I am still eating like crazy, I need to stop this. I that invincibility factor that many of you spoke of after the marathon. I was looking up marathons galore throughout the year. My sisters are running one in Vancouver, Canada in May that I thought about. We will see, right now I really don't feel like taking on another training plan.

Mel, good job on your 15 today. My DH is the same, he could whip off a half marathon in under 1:45 without any training.

Sunny, neat info on your dad.

Minnie good job and your run. :thumbsup2 That's great, onward and upward from here!

Colleen

Okay everyone I got outside for my first ever run outside with my two half marathon buddies. We did just about 4 miles in 43 minutes but boy I'm still tired. It is a lot different than running on the treadmill but at least I got the first run outside over.

I have been reading this blog all week and am amazed at how fit and dedicated everyone is (sorry I actually put I am and then edited), thanks for the inspiration.

Dave and Lisa -- Thanks for the advice on DING. As soon as I re-chose my airport as orlando I got the february specials of $49-53 each way. I hope they do that for March & April. That would be so perfect!

Well, I did my 3rd strength training session in 8 days, my second in the past 6 days. I was happy to get motivated enough to do it. I did upper and body and it took 45 minutes. I decided it is easier for me to do all the machines at once if I am there and it's not too crowded. I decided to up all the weights by at least 10-15 pounds so that I could actually feel the muscles engaging and working. Then I did a mile in 14:50. Pretty relaxed pace, but I was running on no fuel.

So glad to see newbies here. Hi, Brenda! Will look forward so much to getting to know everyone over the next 11 months!

Woo Hoo Cam's going to be addicted to WL soon :woohoo: I'm so happy for you :goodvibes

weight-lifting, I presume! Hi, Melissa!

Oh..... Yeah...... I guess it is. (we all know I don't know anything about that but I know it would be good for me!!)

Well, hey yourself, Cam :wave2:

Hey all! I don't read for 2 days and everyone goes chatty on me!

Sunny - So cool about your dad! Question that has to do w/ WL....How?when did you get started? How much did you start with...ect....I know I need to do it more...but...well...

Brenda - :welcome: So glad you have joined us! I have no Garmin (I call them Grimlin) and I just (after the goofy) got an ipod. So you are good to go with just your sneakers (and as most of the girls here have already discussed) a bra :rotfl2: .

Melissa - WTG on your LR! You will do so great Sat. I wish I was doing it with you! :sad2: You DH must be a running machine! :teeth:

Cam - Did I miss it? How does DS think he did on the SAT?

Keri - WTG on your run! :cool1: That is so AWESOME!

Minnie - I am glad you got to run! :wizard: :wizard: To you so you won't hurt!

As for me....We moved my grandmothers bedroom stuff into our house yesterday for DD7 to sleep in. It is older than my dad..I think that is so cool! She left it to us when she died and I feel like I have a piece of her in my house now!
Anyway..it took all day and I did not get to bike like I wanted to..then today is always a rest day (from exercise). DH is a minister @ our church and there is no time to exercise on Sundays for us.
I have been eating though! :lmao: I guess that is xtraining!
