Wk of Jan 28--WISH Walking/Running Club

Christa - You should do it!!!!! Is it a race or ride? If you sign up, sign up w/ a group and you can draft. That really helps!! The only problem is that you won't really be able to contribute (pulling the line) very much b/c you are too skinny for others to draft off you!:cool1: (too skinny to break wind:rotfl: :rotfl: Sorry, I couln't resist!)

Break wind !:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:
It is a ride and I did just sign up. It is to raise $$$ for MS. I am so excited and :scared1:
I dont know if I am more scared about raising the $$ or riding.

Morning team! Going to try and get 4 miles in and some weights while DD is in gymnastics this am. Feeling a little stiff htis morning, so I feel like I need to get the blood flowing

maria--DH and I had decided to leave our kids with my parents for marathon weekend--we'll be there Friday-Tues. Now, Dsis and Bil are wanting to join us in WDW for a vacation, and they want to go in January--SO we might end up bringing the whole fam and have them watch the kids during the race. I would rather it just be me and DH--less worries that way!

Erica--so sorry to hear about the loss of your dog. My furbaby will be 9 in April, and it makes me really sad to know that she won't be around for 9 more years.

Christa--wow, 100miles on a bike!! You go girl!! Hmmm, is there an Ironman in your future???? My running buddy is doing the Florida Ironman in November, and he's trying to convince me that after the marathon this is the next "logical" step for me--Yeah right!

Kristi--Hope you feel better soon!

Kim--WTG on buying the treadmill--Now you have something to hang your clothes on--oh, wait that's me!;)

cam--Good luck with the Polar Plunge!!!

Dave--WTG on the hill workout! I hate them, but living where I do, can't get away from the darn things! Good luck on convincing DW to head back to WDW next Jan. Luckily, DH is just as obsessed with Disney as me, maybe more so. So, all I have to say is, wanna go to Disney--and he runs and checks how many DVC points we have left and airfare!

carole--WTG on the walk! Just think, you have almost a whole year to train--no need to push it right now!

Well, better go get my rear in gear and lace up nad get out! Will check in later! Hi to all those I missed (and I'm sorry it seems to be more and more lately!:sad2: ):wave2:

Good morning TEAM!! Happy Hump Day!! :cool1: I went to the Community Center after work last night and did the elliptical for 30 minutes and then did some weight training. I did 3 sets of 10 on the machine where you pull the bar down to your chest (I have no idea what it's called), 3 sets of 10 on the leg extension and 6 sets of 10 on the leg press (3 sets for the quads and 3 sets for the calves). I am so excited because I lifted more than my weight on the leg press--I lifted 120 lbs not counting the bar. Woo hoo go me!! :cool1: :cool1: ;) I have a question for Sunny, our resident weight lifting guru: on the nautilus arm thing I did 1 set of 40 lbs and 2 sets of 30 lb--I haven't lifted with my arms in a loooong time and on the leg press, I lifted more than I have ever lifted on that. Here's my question: I'm not sore at all today, is that good or bad? Doesn't the soreness mean your muscles are being worked hard? Should I be lifting more? Doing more reps? Help!!

For the record: after 2 years of running, 2 half marathons and 1 full marathon, I have never lost a toe nail or come close at all. My feet look exactly the same except I have noticed callousing.

Bill--I hope you feel better soon!!! How many posts does Carrie have? Maybe I should respond to everyone individually. Do you think that will drive everyone crazy???

Erica--I am so sorry about your furbaby. I would be a wreck if something happened to Hines. Take comfort in the fact that he was much loved, he died in the arms of family, and right now he's having a ball up in heaven. :grouphug: :grouphug:

Christa--Congrats on signing up for the bike ride!! That is awesome!!!

Dave--Great job getting that hill work in!! If we are taking a vote about your family vacations (:rotfl: ), then I say surprise your DW!!! Have you looked into getting annual passes for your family? If you go more than 10 days out of year, they are cheaper than buying regular tickets. Plus there are usually AP's rates for the resorts that can be up 40% off rack rate, and they are good for one year from the day you first use them. We've had AP's for I think 5 years now, and we love them.

Kristi--Feel better soon!!!!!

Mike--Catching up with the posts can be time consuming, so do I what I do and Dis at work. Let's see, it's 8:48, I've been here since 7:50 and I still haven't done one work related thing yet. :) Thankfully the winter is our slow time. ;)

Heather--CONGRATULATIONS!!!! But like Cam said, we already knew you were a runner.

Maria--I don't have kids, so you can throw my opinion out the window, but I vote for a romantic weekend for you and DH.

Carrie--I am so glad that Scott is feeling better. Tell him his Wish team says to take it easy coming back, he doesn't need to act like Super Man, he has nothing to prove to you or us. :) Were you able to get a run in last night?

Judy--Please call before you come to my house too!! My house used to be clean until I started running and we got a dog that sheds a lot. Am I the only one who still has their packed luggage from Disney sitting in the bedroom? :rolleyes1 :rolleyes1

Carole--You are being so smart in taking your training slow and not increasing your distance or speed too much. That is a recipe for disaster!! You have a great base right now, just keep doing what you are doing.

Chernabog--Another treadmill runner here! Anything 40 minutes or less, I can listen to my mp3 player and be fine, but over 40 minutes and the portable DVD player and movies come out!!

Cam--I thought of you last night when I heard a commercial for the polar bear plunge in Cincinnati. I didn't hear the whole commercial, so now I'm wondering where people are plunging into. The Ohio River?? EWWWW!! :scared: :scared:

Helen--I am sorry your feet are still giving you fits. Have you sworn off flip flops now?

Stephanie--How are the ankles?

I know I didn't get to everybody, but I guess I do need to start on my day. I'll be back!!

Heather - :cool1:  :cool1: :thumbsup2 Way o go! That is such a great feeling!!!!!!

Craig - :rotfl: Yes, my house is run by Miss Mittens. It would appear to outsiders that she does the cleaning too. ';) FUnny, I had to go to teh PO to pick up a package Saturday. I asked if there was somethign I could sign, so they would always just leavce tehm, as we are never home when mail is delivered. She says, "No, is there someone else there who coudl sign for you?' WTH? I bit back my reply that while my cat does have an opposable thumb, she still has some problems opening the door. :confused3 :p

Krista - 1. Note that I am editing an already posted post, as opposed to posting another one. ;) 2. I made it for 25 out of 40 minutes last night. See below for why it was cut short.

Toes - My dad always had black toe nails when he ran. My 2nd toe is shorter than my big toe and my shoues are 1.5 sizes bigger than my reg size. I don't thin it's because they are too short, although that would get me for sure. Plus, my right one is worse than my left on e and my left foot is bigger. So it, can't be that. I'm thinking it just has to do with the way your 2nd toe hits your big toe. :confused3

Well, after my TM experience last night, I'm thinking I don't need a WISH hat anymore, as this is now going to be my standard workout gear.

While the band aids and gauze pads are doing fine on my knees and shins, it'll be a long time before the severe contusion on my ego heals. :sad2: Just to warn others from making the same dreadful mistake: If you fall off the back of the TM, DO NOT try to save face by jumping back on! :rolleyes1

I am so sorry, but I am laughing out loud!!!! :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: That is SO something I would do! Hence the reason my knees are permanently scarred from all the falling I do when I run outside.

Are you okay?????? Sore this morning?? :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug:

Yeah, actually, I'm surprised it took me this long to do it. :rolleyes1 Really, it's not too bad. Bending pulls at the wounds a bit, but not sore or anything. How I could make it through ice adn snow all last year and be fine and darn near kill myself on the TM, I will never know. Even worse? I was on teh darn thing thinkign I was beign good and avoidign the dangers of the snow and ice. :confused3

Mouse Skywalker and disneybelle--

Thanks for the encouragement! I will give yoga a try!

Heather - Way to go!

Maria - I don't take my kids to races longer than a 5k anymore. They have been to tons of triathlons to "watch" their dad. After the first one, they last about 10 minutes before it gets old. They were not even interested in going to Disney to see me run. Although, they are a little more curious now that I have gotten so much attention. I think(hope) missing me was harder than missing me run.

Carrie - Ouch. Unfortunately, I know exactly what you mean about the embarassment being worse than the pain. I was working off baby weight in a gym full of NFL cheerleaders - I never went back.

Carole- I don't do weights ON the treadmill, but I do weight training before I run twice a week. When I get to more intense marathon training, I will stop doing leg workouts and concentrate on arms.

Well that said, I better get going.... somedays tlaking about running is way more fun than actually doing it. :)

Let me think about this. An academically trained and professionally qualified and experienced engineer goes off the back of a treadmill, and without think about Newton's Laws of Motion hops right back on.

Sorry for this, but HAHAHAHAHAHA.

Man I'd have paid big bucks to see that one:happytv: . I'm sure Scott agrees with me. I of course have NEVER done anything quite like that. And no, you are not allowed to contact Martha to get her support for this statement.

Straight from the classic 1960's movie, "The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming." As Alan Arkin says, "I am wounded only in dignity."

Take care of the wounds. You've got a great story to tell there.

Greetings Team. :)

This morning was a rest day, which I really shouldn't have taken since I missed a few days thanks to the broken belt on the TM. However, since I am officially starting Minnie Training on Saturday, I thought I'd go ahead and have that rest day anyway.

Erica - Oh I'm so sorry to hear about your furbaby. That is sad.

Kristi - Oh maaaan! I'm never going to get invited anywhere now! I hope you are feeling better today. :flower3:

Chernabog#1fan - We too have a TV in front of the TM, and also a DVD player. I take movies out of the library for free. Can't beat it! :thumbsup2 I never have time to just sit and watch movies so this works out great for me. Except for one little thing...I've watched pretty much all the movies they have at the library. Uh oh.

Jim - Hey, do it in a two-point! It's great strength training for your legs! Which ranch are you going to? I want to go on a ranch riding vacation, but well, the diving isn't so good in Montana and Charlie loves to dive. Well, maybe you can lake dive there but he likes it warm.

Craig - What good hearts you and Martha have! I love to hear about adoptions! Pictures! We need furbaby pictures! A Ducati? A Monster? My FIL has one. Charlie and I have "tame" bikes compared to that. He rides an older Interceptor and I have a NightHawk. Bet you didn't know I was a biker chick, eh?? :rolleyes1

Bill - Thank you so much for the invitation! :goodvibes Seems like now no one wants to have me over. Geez. Hey! That is SUCH a great idea for "Dr Craig"! I have said several times before..he is the Yoda of your little group here.

Heather! :woohoo: Heather! :woohoo: Heather! :woohoo: You go, girl! You ARE a runner!

Maria - I'm probably the wrong one to ask, but I have to agree with Cam on this issue. This race is about you, and you being properly prepared. I really learned a lot from these guys about getting yourself ready, being mentally psyched, properly fueled, etc. You need to focus on you and the task at hand. I personally wouldn't take him.

Mike - So true on both accounts: the week can only get better, and what? We are supposed to spend more time training then catching up on posts??? Why didn't anyone tell me that??? :rotfl:

Dave - Maybe we can indulge in a little "creative marathon trip planning"......Charlie does DiveQuest every time we go to WDW. They actually keep asking him to come to work there! Hmmm...Anyway, check out the AAA discount for DQ. I think it's pretty good. Say, if you got her a DQ certificate....stayed at a Value.... :rolleyes1 See? Let's start thinking! Come on, I didn't get to meet you this year. You HAVE to come next year!:yay:

Krista - Ohh I'm glad I'm not the only one practicing her "Work Avoidance Technique" by DISing. :rotfl:

Carrie - Is your cat named Miss Mittens? That's adorable! :goodvibes OMG, OK, I'm really sorry about your "TM incident", but.....OMG! :rotfl2: You make me laugh! :lmao:

Cam - Don't they have a big chocolate festival at Rehobeth Beach?:p

For the record, I too have not lost a nail in my first year of training. I did, however notice a couple of nails getting thick. Yeah, really attractive, ain't it? :scared: And the callouses? I sand them off with Charlie's Dremel! Works like a charm.

Does anyone have an inversion board? I was thinking of having Charlie make us one. (He has every tool known to man in the garage and workshop. He might as well build something!) We used to use the one at the gym and I liked it a lot.

Craig
Hmmmm...Why does it feel as though my bruised ego is getting worse instead of better?:confused3 BTW, my loving dh gave me concern last night and got me bigger first aid supplies. He knows he's got at least another day before he can laugh. ;)

Judy - Officially, my cat is just named Mittens. She and her brother Puffs were given to us as a sshower gift one month before our wedding. :confused3 I did not have the time or brain power to think of anything more creative. Heck, I never liked white cats and the ugly short hair one they gave me (one month before my wedding) was deformed to boot. I was less than happy. :headache: Mind you, I've had them for over 10 years now, so I've obviously taken too them both, even if one was ugly and deformed and has an attitude from....) The "Miss" part is just an add on due to her attitude. :snooty:

OK, want a real funny story? My gym is not regularly staffed. Lucky me, I darn near killed myself on a staffed night. In order to make me feel better, teh woman tell me her TM story. WHile she was smarter than I and did not try to get back on, I still can't figure out how **** hit her nose and forehead. Anywa, she gets up and, in an effort to save face, stands up like a gymist coming off a vault with arms outstretched in a Y form. The people told her that it was great she could laugh at herself, but did she realize that her nose was bleeding? :scared1: Poor thing. Then again, that's teh part that made me say again that I was fine, look, no damage and realized I was bleeding from several places.

Now I'm REALLY glad our TM is in the finished basement of our own house!

:rotfl2:

Erica- I am so sorry for your loss:grouphug:

Craig-- you may be onto something with the gender runner's toe thing. On a WDW bus I overheard a couple explaining an interesting tidbit. Women's pointer fingers are as long or longer than their ring fingers whereas men's ring fingers are longer than their pointers-- something to do with the level of estrogen in the body. So if this it true (I keep meaning to investigate and forget), then the same may be true about our second toes. As far as I know, all/almost runner's toes are second toes. There could be a thesis in this:lmao:

Carrie-- I'm so glad you didn't get really hurt. As a trained physicist working as an engineer I can honestly say I would have done the same thing! Paul is fond of saying to me "how can somebody so smart be so stupid?). For example, I can't figure out how to clean out my mp3 player. I delete playlists but the songs stay on the hard drive. I finally got to the point that I only had 1 of the 6 GB left to work wtih. So I wrote a software program to probe the drive, search for songs not in current playlists and delete them. Then I wondered, if nearly every American owns an mp3 player now, why can't I figure out how to use mine?

Kristi-- it would be great if we could workout together! That doesn't seem feasible, but we could at least try to pick 5Ks/10Ks to meet up with. We might even be able to get Lynne to come along:)

Terri- Any news on the feet?

DD17's friend left for Iraq today. This is her third friend to go. In addition, she stayed by her friend's side while her sister died of sickle cell enemia and is now by her side as her brother is in his final days. It made me realize she has lived through more in her short 17 years than I have in my 43.

Sunny

I have to travel to my treadmill...over to the Y. So jealous of all you people who can hop on at home.

Hockeychick...Congrats on your new baby. Where will you set up your treadmill? If it were me it would be in front of the TV. But I wouldn't let my DH store his beloved motorcycle in the living room for the winter so he may be upset if a treadmill appears there.

Carrie...You really did get carried away on the treadmill. Right to the back. Glad you weren't hurt badly.

How does everyone keep track to respond to people?? :confused3 I can only remember two or three peoples posts by the time I'm writing.

I doing an easy walk today. Three miles but at relaxed pace. Then my abdominal workout after.
I don't know what a runners "high" feels like, however the last 20 minutes of my walking feels a little euphoric. I sometimes add more time on because it feels so good.

Enjoy your day
Carole

Carole -- I am so happy to hear that you are enjoying your workouts. :goodvibes: All too frequently, I am just wishing I'd get to the end. Other times, I feel like I could go on and on, if it weren't for other commitments, like life! ;) Enjoy!

Sunny -- Hugs to Sonya. I am so sorry she is going through all of this. But it is apparent that she is a brave, strong and loyal young woman. I know you must be so proud of her. :thumbsup2

Carrie -- We just bought a package of 240 band-aids at Costco and I am hoping it would take us years to use them. Shall I send you some? I am glad Scott is taking good care of you. Is he feeling better?

Carrie: OUCH, but the story about the staffer at the gym was hilarious!! Funny story: when we were in Hawaii and Craig was watching the fierce surf debating whether to go in, I mentioned that the waves alone would kill him and our DD piped up with "Well, I've got bandaids if you need them!" :lmao:

Yep our "Hemingway" kitten is quite an interesting fellow. He is really quite something to watch. He is about 3 1/2 months old and will attack our 1 1/2 year old cat with abandon. He'll get his butt whupped by her, run away, then come back and do it again! I'll never understand males.

I ran 30 minutes on saturday and felt good. Hip was a little tight on sunday but biking for 20 minutes helped loosen it up. Yesterday I ran 20 minutes and felt the hip a good deal of the night. I'm resting today and it's doing pretty well. I'll be with my trainer tomorrow who'll whip my butt and I'll take off friday to rest from her beating.

Tell me again why I'm doing this? There has GOT to be a better way....

I got in a 45 minute (3.107 mile) walk today. I'm getting in what I can, as we leave for WDW on Friday.

Interesting read on the toenails, I've lost both "pointer toe" toenails, even before I was training for any events! Go figure! I think it was the shoes originally, but now I'm losing one of them again. I think it's just the way I walk.

Question: I averaged out my pace from last week, on average I do a 14.41 mile (I'm new to pace stuff). Some individual days were between 14.06 and 14.25. For now, that's about as fast as I can go, exertion wise. I am doing a Form/Drill day, per MFM. My question, will I ever get faster? I only want a little faster, maybe a 14. average. I'm using my heart rate monitor some days, and it's showing me at 80% + (when I'm doing 4.5mph for example). MFM says most days should be 60-70% max. I've been walking for exercise for 2 years, so I'm relatively fit.

Any comments/ideas? TIA!

Got my marathon for mortals book in the mail yesterday! I can't wait to read it.
