Wk of Jan. 20th-- WISH Walking/Running Club

14 pages in 3 days?!? With all the new members, I'm still a fan of switching to daily threads instead of weekly (got voted down a while back)... Makes it easier for me to figure out where I left off, but that's because I miss a couple days at a time and get lost 10 pages back... ;) I'm also biased because that's the way they do it on a tri forum that I frequent, they just do a thread title with the date like 1/22/08, and everyone posts their daily exercise totals. Did a 3 miler first run post marathon on Thur, 30 min on the bike trainer Thur and Fri, a 7 miler on Sunday to make up for missing the 9 miler race on Sat, and am headed out for my "back to normal" 4 miler mid week short run tonight.

Got lots of races on upcoming weekends, but this weekend is a rare empty one!

There's a 5K in Destin on Saturday iff'n you're bored.

WOW! I can't keep up this week! Glad to see everyone is back home and back to their regular training!

WELCOME to all the newcomers!

Today, I did my first post-marathon workout...finished 3 miles in 29 min! That is pretty fast for me these days. I felt great and just went with it. I signed up today for the NJ Marathon on May 4...so when all of you are at WDW doing the Minnie, I will be running in NJ.

Hope everyone has a great evening!!

That was with my 1st! I only gained 20 something lbs. I was also throwing up the whole pregnancy....most don't do that, but it was not pretty! Try running out of a counseling session and not making it to the bathroom! So I actually lost several pounds b/4 I started gaining....Now with my 2nd.....again, the ROCKY ROAD ICECREAM DIET!

Swam a mile today in 47 min...ooooo I have lost the swimming fitness! O so slow! Must get faster!

Christa: I need help training for a tri. Here's my dilemma and I'm hoping you can help. OR anybody else out there with triathlon experience. I want to sign up for the SheRox Philly Sprint Tri. in August! I know that I need to build my swim fitness...and of course I can't really do much about that around here until my lake opens in June. Basically, how do I train for both a tri and a marathon at the same time??? All the training plans I'm looking at have you running only two days :(. That isn't good for my marathon training. Do you guys have a formula that works and allows for 3 to 4 runs per week in addition to the biking and swimming? Just curious.

TIA!!! :goodvibes

This is the time of year where we figure stuff like that out. We've grown quite a bit over the last couple years which is a testament to how warm, friendly and encouraging all of you are. I'm not sure what the best way to manage our growth might be. I know the volume of posts on this thread keep some people away and it's gotten harder to keep up over time. The post volume usually dies down once we get further away from marathon weekend, but I've noticed we've kept up a pretty good pace all through the last year.

I'm a simple person and I like having one central thread that keeps us generally together. There's certainly the opportunity to post separate threads like the Walkers group, Minnie group and the MCM turned Philly group. Maybe a separate tri thread would be helpful too? (I won't volunteer on starting that one since I swim like a rock ;) )

Personally, my biggest objections to daily threads (and I'm on a couple running boards that do that) is someone needs to be available to post the thread everyday. Also, I'm concerned that it would disjoint conversations too much. Every weekend when we switch over to the new thread, we lose some cool stuff that someone's posted late in the thread. I think that's worse on dailies.

So, opening the floor for discussion, what is your vision for the WISH team? Any suggestions on the best way to keep us going while keeping it manageable? I'd be happy to post a poll if we have a few suggestions to vote on and keep things anonymous.

I like the programs on this site, and this is just one of many that they have that seemed to fit what you're looking for. Basically you figure out as a starting point how many hours a week you want to devote to exercise, and figure out which plan will work out best from there. I'll be doing a similar 3x balanced program for olympics initially this year. Usually has you either swim/bike or run, or some have you swim/run or bike on alternating days, so obviously you'll be doubling up sometimes. They usually let you do your long runs for your running training on the weekends without much adjustment however.

I hadn't considered the disjointed conversation-ness (?). That is definitely worth thinking about....

Mel/Matt - As long as the threads can get, I still like the weekly threads. I can usually find where I left off and it is easier than trying to figure out which day I haven't seen. Like Mel said, it would make it harder to follow some conversations that seem to start a couple of days ago and get a life of their own. Like poor Krista and her soon to be shoeless wardrobe. :lmao:

Panda - If you happen to be reading this, you didn't tell us that you were starring in a movie named after you. Although since it is produced by the other animation studio I can understand why you didn't post it on a Disney board. ;) I took Billy to the movies tonight to see the Veggietale Pirates and they had a preview for a movie called Kung Fu Panda. Apparently it is about a panda who is learning kung fu with other animals. He claims he is a lean mean fighting machine but circumstances have taken over and he is having a hard time right now. :lmao: Looks like it could be interesting and a possible theme movie for the Wishers for a month or so...

WWdave - The Kung Fu Panda :rotfl:

Guess we'll have to get him some "Hai Karate" for Christmas. ;) :rotfl2:

Actually it's Hapkido Panda. I got interested in it years ago when the Billy Jack movies were popular. I practiced for over 20 years, even taught some in Okinawa. I gave it up after I retired and never got back into it.

Guess who hit the TM tonight... Oh Yah, it was me. And I liked it. It was only 30 minutes, but hey I'm not really training at the moment. So I guess I didn't give up running after all.

Just a quick drive by...my day has been a looooong one dealing with a super cranky child, and I am SO ready for bed.
Went to Y today and ran 3 swam 250 yds. I feel like I got my groove back with the running today, yesterday was torture. Could just be that I was listening to some super cool music though. Going to try to run long Saturday morning. That will be the true test.

I agree that it's hard to keep up with this thread with this many posts. But I think it's a normal thing for this time of year, and coming off marathon weekend.
I bet it will slow down soon enough as people either get bored with it, or decide that running/walking long distances isn't really their thing after all.
I don't think I would like looking for certain people all over this forum. Most days I just get on this thread and that's it.
But that's just MHO

I'm going to bed!

I really like having a single thread for the week. I have a hard enough time keeping up with the one - there's no way I could keep up with multiple threads!

Going stir crazy here! DH and I went for a SLOW 1-mile walk the other day, but that was a little too much for me yet. But I want to get out there and get back to it!

I probably shouldn't admit this after all the post-pregnancy talk, but I'm actually wearing pre-pregnancy jeans today (11 days postpartum). :) Oh, they're still a little tight, but it makes me happy anyway.

I like the weekly thread as hard as it is to keep up with sometimes, because we definately lose stuff at the end of each week. :)

On the training front:

Did pump and bodyflow (yoga/tai chi/pilates) at the gym tonight. That bodyflow is becoming my favorite class. It combines a lot of stretching and balance works (a lot of it reminds of the 12 years of ballet that I took) and then the pilates and a whole track of back exercises. I will be back in running shape in no time.
:woohoo:

On the shirt issue, is there any way we will get them before MINNIE? It will be the first race I am not wearing AT shirt and I sooooooo want to be wearing WISH tech shirt :cheer2:

Okay, I've given up on trying to catch up! :sad1: Work has been too crazy!

Mel -- I would LOVE a tech WISH shirt! :woohoo: And the ones from the site that Heather posted were absolutely gorgeous! I don't know if we are already past that suggestion, but wanted to at least mention that they were the NICEST tech shirts I have ever seen!

TXAng- Congratulations! He is just absolutely gorgeous!!! I hope you are getting some sleep! :goodvibes

:welcome: to all our new team members! So excited about sharing your progress this year!

I finally made it to the gym last night - 30 minutes elliptical; 30 minutes bike.

Tonight was 50 minutes on the TM (14:50 avg pace); not breaking any land speed records, but did confirm the desperate need for new race shoes.

Jen -- congrats on the fast start to that last 30 pounds coming off. I am right there with you (though I am closer to 35-40 to go).

YAY! to seeing some of our guys signing on for Minnie. What an awesome time it was last year!

OK I NEED HELP/ADVICE

With all the races we have done our training is still very archaic and I am ready to move it to the next level. I WANT A GARMIN!!!

Until now we have plotted out different routes by the car odometer, which leaves us very limited as to where we can run :( and then if we time we just use watch. I am done with that, especially if we are training for full this year. That way of training makes it hard to do tempo runs, speedwork etc.

Anyway my request is I need any and all advice on which ones you guys have and what you do and do not like about them. I am going to be honest between buying new shoes, signing up for MINNIE, getting hotel for MINNIE, etc I don't want to spend a ton. I want one that will tell me how far I went and how quickly I'm running, that's really all I need.

SO fire away and tell me what you guys think :confused3

Hi, I made it to the gym for my FIRST run after the Goofy today. I managed only two (2) painful miles on the TM at a 10:40 pace. I had to pause for three seperate stretching maneuvers before proceeding again.

I then proceeded to do one (1) mile on the elliptical/cross-trainer. Not very nicely done, but it was something.

More to follow....

:welcome: to all the new members! I'm not going to try and name everyone - it'll take me an hour to go back through 3 days of posts this week and remember all the names! It's great to have you here.

Angie - I just upgraded from the 201 to the 205 a few weeks ago. I got it off Amazon for less than I paid for the 201 locally. DH has the 301 cause he likes the heart monitor, but I don't care. I just want to know how far I went and how long it took, and the 205 does that (and a LOT more). It keeps the signal better than the 201, which is why I upgraded.

Mel - I like the weekly thread too. I think Bree's right - it will probably slow down some once we get into the year and off the post-marathon high.

Ran almost 7 miles Sat on the TM at a really easy pace. Needed 2 hrs for the week for the wellness program at work, and I hadn't done anything since my 30 minute post-half walk on Sunday morning at WDW. Then LTO and haven't done anything since. It's probably not recommended to only do the LR's, but that seems to be my training plan at the moment. But I haven't decided what the next race is, so maybe it really doesn't matter? :confused3

Aloha everyone,

I just went out for my first Post Goofy Run. I have to rub it in, Honolulu is 78 degrees with 10 mph tradewinds. Good running weather, LOL. Eat your heart out.

Did a 1 mile walking warm up with my training group, then took off for a 8 mile run with one of the faster guys in my group.

Surprisingly, my feet, legs, and body all feel good after taking nine days off.

My next race is President's day, the Great Aloha Run from Aloha Tower to Aloha Stadium.

By the way, try mapmyrun.com to see what your training runs work out to be. If not satisfied with that, then invest in a Garmin.

Personally, I love my IPOD with the Nike Sensor so I can run to music, which a Garmin doesn't have. Since I don't wear Nike shoes, I use the adapter clip from switcheasy.com

Aloha,
Jeff

Funny someone should mention kung fu Panda - we were in Epcot on
Tuesday and I said 'oh look panda' - Tim was so excited as he thought it was kung fu panda - but it was our panda, with Erica, looking at pins - sadly, I was still having a little trouble moving fast at that point so by the time we got to the pin place the panda had disappeared - obviously some jedi mind trick he picked up somewhere.

Toenail is still on foot - podiatrist was horrified by it, but said it would hurt more if he removed it - it therefore now needs more pampering that the WISH newborn and has it's own little bag of dips, wipes and padding thingies. Is it wrong that I now know the name of the man who trod on my shoe (thanks Kristi!) and am contemplating posting it to him when it finally parts ways with my toe! No running to report - podiatrist suggested that unless i wanted to live in a world of pain I refrained from bashing my feet about until it comes off!!! Helen

Good Morning TEAM: :surfweb:

OK, I'm having a hard time keeping up with the thread, but I'm trying to keep posting anyway even if I can't respond to everyone. No training for me yesterday. I'm trying to rest my hip/ITB, and I was busy getting ready to teach my first class at a neighboring college. Some of you may remember I've been having a lot of frustrations with my current job. Well I was offered a part-time teaching position at a nearby college, and it started yesterday. I'm excited about the new start.

OK, here's my continuing begging for photo votes. Thank you for all of you that voted. My WISH teammates are really coming through for me. Can I get some more votes? Thank you, thank you, thank you.
