Wk of Jan 15--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

I'm not sure what kind of training i did today!! Sarah (EC) and I went mountian biking and put out orienteering markers. We plotted the coordinates and made a navigation map for our husbands to use later???? I think I may kayak tomorrow if it is not too cold or windy!!

We were supposed to trail run, but we willhave to put that off until next week. We did hike to put out the markers, but now that I look at the plotted points on the map, it doesn't look like we covered too much ground.

The boy ended up doing better on the bike last night with his daddy. I'll post a pic later, once i get it on the computer (you know, for Cam!!!!)

Hope everyone heals quickly from all of their illnesses.

Has anyone ever run the St. Louis Marathon? I was looking for something this spring and saw this one listed. It is on April 9th, 2006 and has a 1/2 and full marathon course. The link to the site is stlouismarathon.com

Also, where has everyone found their MFM books? None of my local books stores or libraries have it in stock.

I got mine on Amazon-- I think it was less than $15 bucks. Highly worth it, IMHO.

Here is a picture of what I did with my christmas money - this is my plan for getting my rides in this summer!

I got mine at Barnes and Nobles, you can check their website too, www.barnesandnobles.com. I'm not sure what the price is though.

5:00--time to fly!!!

Order those books soon! I had mine on backorder last year! I do know someone who just got hers in 1 to 2 days, though.

judy - Another def of neg split. I do mile splits. If your second mile is faster than your first, it's a neg split.

Speaking of sappiness. I bawled when I finished. People kept askign dh if I was OK. Think he wanted to disown me!

I als teared up several times during the run. Everything was just so amazing!

Oooh, I am so jealous! Judy has gorgeous horses, many of us have hottie hubbies, and Melissa's son is absolutely adorable! Isn't this fun? It feels like of like show & tell!

I agree we need to have a WISH retreat in the beautiful horse country of West Chester, NY and then maybe we can all make a trip to Arkansas to follow Melissa's orienteering course. OF course, we'll have to fit those fun trips around all of the myriad events that everyone is undertaking this year! Can anyone believe how many events we have going?

Just for fun, here are my plans. Maybe everyone can cut and paste the list into their next post and add their name next to the event.

5/7 -- Minnie 15K, Orlando, FL
5/29 -- Spring Lake 5, Spring Lake NJ
8/13 -- Chicago Distance Classic, Chicago
9/17 -- DL Inaugural 1/2, Anaheim, CA
1/7/07 -- WDW Full Marathon, Orlando, FL

I am hoping to do several charity 5Ks this year, too, but am playing that schedule by ear, based on work commitments.

SO, who is joining me where?

::yes:: Sounds good to me! LOVE those pictures Honei!! We just need to plan "the retreat" around some type of run or race! :rotfl:

Cam, loved your mushy post this morning! :flower: Thanks for the information on Delaware marathon, it comes very highly recommended from all the reviews I have read.

Sunny and Christa, thanks for the information on WW. I have been eating like a horse since the marathon. My taper period was fine, but now it has been out of control.

Lily, is that blue marathon sweatshirt something you purchased this year or last? I don't remember seeing them this year.

I am loving all the pics! Is there anyone that can help me put a picture in my signature? In addition to being directionally challenged I am also technologically challenged. I've seen directions posted before, but I need the "posting for dummies" version. I emailed myself a picture from Innovations West wearing my medal, and I'd like to add it to my signature - it is currently stored on my computer. I also have a digital picture of the group at Fort Wilderness. I keep saying I am going to learn how to do some of this stuff, but I never get around to it.

O.k. when I mentioned the Chicago Classic to my mom she said "what about DL?" Well she had already told me several times that we couldn't do that one it would be too expensive. Both DS will be in school then & I'm not going to LA alone so I jus stopped thinking about it. Well apparently she has been thinking about it (she saw the castle medal too). Sooooo-she has ff miles so we can fly free. I just checked on the Candy Cane Inn that several of you are staying at & it looks great & a good price. She told me to go ahead & book it.

Have any of you actually stayed at the Candy Cane? I like to at least hear first hand its a good place/good location. I have never been to CA & its easy to get decieved by websites. OOHHH, this is getting exciting!

Well, I got the results of my bone scan today. Nothing! It didnt find anything. So since there is obviously still a big problem, I have now been referred to a sports orthopedist. I go next Tues. So more waiting. I am going to the gym in the a.m. & do the bike. That should be o.k. for my feet/ankles. AHHH-I need to get back to training. If I keep sitting around doing nothing but eating I'm going to gain all the weight back I lost.

Cam-you are not sappy. I totally agree & relate to everything you said! Congrats to DH for getting better & the job :cheer2:

Judy-so pretty!!! Love those pics!

I am new here and I have just started training to get ready for the full next year. I am very excited. I was wondering if all of you do 5k and 10k races throughout the year just to get some racing in. My goal for this year is to finish the marathon. I have never done a marathon, yet I have always wanted to. So, I guess I wanted to see what you all thought I should do. Should I plan to do a variety of other races throughout the year?? If so, how many and how often?

Thanks so much, you all are such a motivating group. Each day I come on and read all of your posts and it has me so motivated to train!!

Here's how you do it using www.photobucket.com

First establish an account on a picture website such as www.photobucket.com
If you use photobucket when you log in the first box you will normally see is called Add Pictures. You will then browse to find your selected picture from your computer and then click on submit to upload it to their site. After the picture is uploaded you will have three options underneath the picture one is URL, one is tag, and one is image. You will use the image infomraiton. Select and copy it and when you come to the Dis select your user cp and signature and paste the information you had from photobucket into your signature and after you save it the picture should appear. If you need to size your photo down you can do this in photobucket (sizing it down in photobucket does not size down the original image you have on your computer)

Oh my gosh....I am so far behind reading all these threads...but I have to say, this is one amazing group!!!! It seems like everyone did great on marathon weekend!!! :cool1: A few set backs, but they'll make good stories. ;) So many of you have full racing schedules already for the coming year!!!! Once again, I'm so impressed!!! Keep up the great work. I'm also loving the pictures. What a photogenic group.

I too, am computer challenged. I wish I knew how to do the yellow boxes. Oh well.

Minnie, I've never done St. Louis, but some friends have. I'll ask them about it. About the book, will your book store order it for you? Maybe, the library has it, but it's checked out? :confused3 Hope you find it soon.

kenercam, you are going to be more than ready for the full in January! I'm jealous of your schedule. :teeth:

hockeygirl, if you can, sign up for a race or two. That way you'll be a little more familiar with race day procedures. Good luck!!!! :flower:

To all you sick people...get better soon!!! My family has been cursed with every ailment the past two weeks. We should be good to go for the rest of winter! :rolleyes1

Sara

Haha- I shouldn't have to worry about getting sick like everyone else seems to be. Of course, that's because I was the one to be sick the week BEFORE/DURING the marathon. Seriously, I hope everyone gets feeling better soon.

Howard(via Cam)- congrats on the job. Yes, you can keep training even with other commitments. Cam, just remind him that you did it. BTW, you aren't sappy. :grouphug:

Judy- great pictures, we post OT pictures periodically so don't feel guilty because frankly nothing is truly off topic here:)

Mo and I did the Spinervals Ultraconditioning Full Body workout with Irongirl for the first time tonight. It's cycling intervals interspersed with strength training off the bike. She was hurting on the bike and I was hurting doing the strength stuff so it was a good workout for both of us.

race schedule at Cam's request:
2/5 Mid-Winter 10 mile Classic ME
3/12 Boston Run to Remember 1/2 MA
4/30 St Anthony's Triathlon FL
5/7 Minnie Marathon FL
5/21 FL 70.3 Ironman FL
6/4 Mooseman 1/2 ironman NH
6/18 W Kennebunk Fire Tri ME
7/16 Musselman 1/2 ironman NY
8/13 Chicago Distance Classic IL
8/20 Timberman 70.3 NH
Labor Day weekend- Skinnyman Triathlon NY
9/10 Ironman Wisconsin Madison
10/15 Steamtown Marathon ? PA
Jan 07- WDW Goofy???

Oh dear, it's a good thing that you don't pay a lump sum registering for races as I would probably have sticker shock if I realized how much I have dropped/will be dropping for entry fees. To say nothing of the plane tickets, hotel, rental car. And then there's the training necessities like replacements for gear that wears out like swim suits and running shoes, nutrition products, etc. I would be more than happy to provide info for anyone considering joining me for any of these races. Only 2 are completely closed out already(and both of those closed in less than 8 hours after entry opened) and those are St Anthony's and IM WI. Mooseman, Timberman, and Musselman all have sprint or international distance triathlons on the race weekend along with the Half Ironman races.

Lisa - Oh my nerve! That schedule is heinous!! Home schooling, too? YOU are amazing, regardless of how many marathons & such that you run. Tough, tough, schedule. I was looking at the picture of the brace you posted, think that'd help w/ my runner's knee thing? Did it stay in place the entire run? I've tried to run w/ those things you pull over your knee w/ the hole in the front & the dang thing was around my shin after mile one (& these are NOT thin legs I'm running with).

Question about a DR appt. for my knees - will they actually x-ray my knees @ any point...should they? Or are they just going to tell me that the cartilage under my knee cap is wearing thin (duh). What can I hope to achieve by seeing a Dr. about this problem?

Cam - So glad Howard is doing better! Are they going to blast that thing again?? I need to lose 10-15 lbs (take some stress off of these knees), would it be ok if I PM you about Weight Watchers? Where do I find the points system? Is there a book I could check out from the library, or is the program hard to get hold of if you don't pay lots 'o $? I can't believe you lost that much weight!

Sunny - I can't believe how much you lost on WW, either. This program must really work!

You TGs are insane!

Melissa - 50k runs? Is everyone in AL insane??

Jodi

My dual strap did stay in place--it was wonderful! It can help with runners knee--but as with anything else--not guaranteed of course. Depends on what is truly wrong with you. Sadly I do not have it anymore. It stayed on for 13.1 miles...and then we went to the med tent for my mandatory post run icing and I took it off. Hubby gathered everything and I thought he had my cho-pat. Oh well. So YES it does stay on...but once you take it off--it is fair game for losing. Many on our TNT team wear them. I guess we attract a lot of people with busted knees or something. :confused3

An x-ray won't show anything obvious unless you fractured something. An MRI will be more conclusive and will be ordered if they suspect something that might need to be repaired surgically or to simply rule out something serious. My insurance requires x-ray before MRI so my doc ordered them at the same time. And of course the x-ray was negative and the MRI was positive.

I don't know what a doctor could do--and I'm still a little :confused3 about what an orthopedist is for anyway unless it is for something serious. I would have gone to a PT if it would have done any good but I had a positive MRI which warranted the ortho doctor.

If PT doesn't help your situation (lost track of who's who now--you are in PT, right? or was that someone else.), then by all means seek the ortho to find out an underlying source of the problem.

Seeing your regular doctor will get you the referral you need for whatever services.

YOu guys are making me  .

It really isn't all that bad and I like my schedule. Just a few things put it over the top just before Christmas...and we are all better now. :goodvibes

And to add to that--a bit off topic!--I have finally landed a job I can do from home. I'll have to let you know if I grow to love or hate it...but beginning Tuesday evening..I become an official telecommuter. We'll see how it goes--I suspect the first little bit I will be :scared: :faint: , but hope it transitions to :wizard: :cloud9: . We shall see--I take phone calls, no cold calling--but it involves placing orders and then *gasp*--trying to get them to buy more than what they called for. But at least it is scripted--I don't have to talk them into it--I just read get the yes or no and then move on. It's the part where they don't want to hear it and I am to make an attempt to get them to hear it that bothers me. Paid per the call. So we'll see how it goes. (And yes--anyone can apply and try for this if they are looking for extra money--check out this thread on the budget board: http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?p=11232409#post11232409. I spent about 5-10 hours training (now really--I didn't count, so that is my guess ;) ) and did have to get rid of my caller id. If it pans out I will get a dedicated phone line and then get my caller id back. :goodvibes

I won't call this a dream job per se--but I pick the hours and the company I am contracted to work for puts them in 30 minute and 1 hour increments. :cool1:

Okay--enough rambling!

I now treat my time at the gym as my spa time. Unfortunately no masseuses or pampering is involved--but I do take a shower there and for some reason--the smell in there reminds me of a spa or a Disney resort (I'm not kidding--I think it is the shampoo they use or something--it smells GOOD!).

Today I did the ellipitical. I wish I would have kept track of how I was doing post surgery...b/c I think I'm doing a bit better on it, but really have no way of knowing for sure. And I did weights--I think my arms will be screaming for mercy in the morning. And all my leg weights--I did kick up the reps or the weight on every single one...so hey--STRONG legs. Wahoo!!! That left leg muscle still not quite where it should be. The right leg is giving it a big whipping that keeps on ticking!

Hi everyone!

I'm back from PT and it went pretty well. You'll never believe what happened last night though. I rolled over in my sleep and but my neck out somehow. I didn't go to the chiro because my PT said not to until she saw me but I'll be going tomorrow unless my sleep puts it back in tonight

As for the PT she showed me a great stretch for the area in my behind that is very tight. She thinks the sacrum is moving back over slightly as my hips look more in line and the pain has lessened somewhat. I'm taking muscle relaxers every night also to help with this. She said that I can try swimming or TM walking. She also said that hanging from a noodle in the deep end would be helpful as it would be like having traction on the socket. I'll likely give that a try over the weekend. She also looked at the xrays and saw the scroliosis and hip bone difference. I have another PT apt on Monday and will know by then if I need to keep the ortho apt. Like Lisa said about orthos - I'm not quite sure nor is the PT sure what help he can give me other than order an MRI. Oh my PT has had this before and said that PT helped her

Anyways I'm very sore again tonight but hope to feel better tomorrow.

Sara - Thanks for checking on the St Louis one for me.

Mel - Thanks for the invite. Arkansas is a long, long way from me otherwise I would consider it. St Louis is only 3 hours away which makes it doable.

So who is all doing the Chicago one? It would be wonderful to meet up with others from the Wish Team :wave2:

If my PT helps me I'm seriously considering the Minnie too :cheer2:

For those of you R/W or W/R how do you keep track of your intervals? Do you set a timer on your watch?
Thanks,
Maggie

I use a watch (my hubby sets a timer--I stalk the clock).

Intervals are in 5 or 10 minute increments (must add up to a 5 or 10) so that there is no crazy adding invovled. And when it hits 5 or 0 then I know it is time to run again.

In particular I do 4:1's R/W it can be 3:2's 2:3's or 1:4s .

For 10 minute increments it can be:
1-9 for the first part and then the delta for the second part. (i.e. 9:1, 8:2 so on and so on)

Now are his little feet independent of your pedaling--or will he be training for the tri as well? :moped:

That's great news Minnie.

I think I am going to have to get myself a noodle and into the deep end of a pool. I didn't know that could be helpful.

Did you ask your PT about the sacro-wedgy?
