Wk of Feb 5--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

Dave - My theory is that rest is also an essential part of training and if you rest this evening, it might actually be better than if you workout. I know, I know, it's just hard for an athlete to rest!!!!! Have a good night whatever you choose.

Thanks for saying that MelR, but I already gave myself a rest day and I didn't want to take 2 days in a row off. What do you think? Maybe I shouldn't push it at this early stage. I've come pretty far already. Maybe I'll just see how I feel at 8:00pm after my meeting. It is nice snuggling with my DW and watching Survivor too.

Help, help! The aliens have me!

Since everyone else has exciting training news to post, I wanted to share mine.

I'm on call this week and got called around 4 am...twice...by a fax machine :furious: . It apparently has some unrequited interest in our office voice mail  Anyway, after two adrenaline rushes in 15 min, I couldn't get back to sleep. Finally got up and decided to do a quick run. Conquered a few running demons this morning.
1. It was cold, somewhere in the neighborhood of 46F...real dragonbreath weather. I went anyway even before the sun came up to warm things up...did just fine. So I've slayed the cold weather running dragon.
2. I've been feeling pretty bummed about training so decided to try and actually jog this morning. I started out by walking for 3 min, then started jogging. I jogged from one end of Alligator Bayou, thru Magnolia Bend, all the way to the end of POFQ. I stopped jogging when the mile lap beeper sounded on the Garmin...a total of 11 min of jogging. I walked for a half mile, then jogged again, this time for 8 min. That would be the "I'll never be able to jog more than 2 min at a time" dragon. I was absolutely shocked and amazed that I was able to jog that much! The only thing that wasn't so great was my pace. I ended up with a 14:41 pace overall with my first mile as 13:56. I can do that with my normal W3/R2 intervals :confused3 . I do remember something like this when I upgraded from W3/R1 to W3/R2. I'm thinking I'll train to R/W the Minnie, then possibly consider actually training to RUN next year's half :cool1:

Cam...I don't think anything here is completely off topic. Afterall, training is part of our life plans now, so any other life-related topic must be okay, right :thumbsup2

Carrie...glad to see you've gotten some good advice for your foot. When I had my podiatry eval last year before starting training, I specifically requested a doc that was a runner. Found one with his WDW plaque from a few years ago hanging on his office wall :)

Yikes, Judy! So where does one go to see a skunk show? :lmao: Seriously, though, you should rest on rest days. I know in the beginning it's really hard, but your muscles need time to rest and get used to the new things you're asking of them. If you avoid rest, you set yourself up for injury, which tends to enforce rest and make you miserable. I had to take a week off last May because of shin splints from pushing myself too hard!

Minnie... :wizard: :wizard:

Helen...I definitely think that's a sign for you to go ahead and register for 2007 :teeth:

MelR...good luck with the new TM! I keep looking over that Muddy Buddy race at Disney...looks like it would be a blast! I think DD13 would do it with me, but it says you have to be 16, so maybe in a few years. Anyone else?

It's okay, Dave...Craig survived us last year :teeth: If you start chiming in on the jog bra discussions, though, we might worry :sad2:

Hey, guys! Lots of great stuff to respond to here, but alas, have to get on a conference call.

Just had to report -- Jenn got into West Chester U., an awesome school for teaching! YEAH!!! 5 weeks until she hears from her 1st choice, but this is an awesome, awesome school and an amazing "safe school" for her to have in her pocket. I am so proud of her! Here is a kid with severe ADHD who has conquered those demons, NOT availed herself of her Section 504 accomodation plan under the americans with disabilities act, and is working so hard and doing so, so well! I am so proud of her I could just BURST!

UGH! My call.
Later.

Melissa - this is for you! :smokin: :smokin: :smokin: :smokin: :smokin: :smokin: :smokin:

cough, cough, choke, gasp, cough, cough

Shouldn't this be a "smoke-free" thread :rotfl2: :lmao: :rotfl2: (snuck those in while the server wasn't looking).

Dave-- thanks for asking for me :) I can't wait to hear how the grant news turns out.

I crashed today. DS has been coughing for a few days and I decided to keep him home today. I pretty much dozed, did soduko puzzles and ate all day :rolleyes2 I'm at work now. I will go to the Y around 8 for 2 hours to make up for my total laziness.

There's so much to catch up on, I know i'll miss a ton...

Minnie-- Keep posting! :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: to get you through

Carrie, Mickey and others who have posted injuries and pain-- :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: for you, too.

Helen-- maybe Tim's company will mandate that you do Goofy, so :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: for you, too. (BTW, if you want to learn how to use facies, I'll tell you the secret!)

Cam-- I'm so happy for you and DD! That is awsome news. You must be so proud of her. Make sure to celebrate BIG!!!!

Colleen-- I'm sorry I wasn't sympathetic to your toe nail. I didn't realize you were really upset about it. I hope you have embraced it with pride now!

um Christa, are you excited about your bike, its hard to tell :lmao:

Judy-- I had a skunk encounter once, but I failed to see the beauty in it! (fortunately it was a smell free encounter). Glad DH hooked you up with the movies! You'll never get off of that think. Irritation, restlessness on rest days is totally normal. Wait 'till you hit the taper!!!!! We should start a support thread for family members for rest days and tapering season :lmao:

Well if I have to spend the evening at work I might as well do something productive...

Sunny

Dave - You are doing great w/ you training and you have already developed the habit of exercise. An extra day of rest shouldn't set you back as far as distance or pace. It is always such a hard decision!!!! Really, you should just do whatever works best and know if you miss the workout, you can be free of guilt!!!

I got my TM :lovestruc :lovestruc I got 3 miles in while boy was napping today!! I love that extra bit of freedom. For those of you who use the TM regularly, what incline level do i need to put it on to simulate the road?

Cam - CONGRATS to you DD!!!!!! No wonder your kids are so smart, just look at you and howard!!!! Hey isn't it section 504 of the rehab act of 1973??? :teeth: :teeth: You think my law talk is cool don't you? :confused3 :confused3 Hey, guess who used to be nerdy vocational rehab counselor, ummmm, before they became an athletic SAHM!!!!

Hi MelR-- your green light is on :)
What kind of TM is it?
What exactly is a vocational rehab conselor?
I set the TM to .5% to simulate the road. Sometimes (rarely) I do "hills" of 1-5%. I don't know what is reasonable. (ok, no comment. I mean "reasonable on the TM").

I snuck over to another board and stole me some good ones ;)

Helen-- this is Avanced Smilies 201, I don't suggest you try this just yet :lmao: :p

Sunny - what does the green light mean??? If I find out, I could really be pulled away from normal life!! Voc rehab couns. work w/ people w/ disabilities and help them figure out if and what kind of work they can do. I mostly worked on work comp cases, so i worked w/ people who had an injury at work and assessed whether they could work again. Unfortunately, many of the cases are litigated, so i had to do a lot of expert witness testimony. I DID NOT LIKE THAT!! I really like helping people work - that was a ton more fun. I got a vision fitness 9200 simple tm. it was considered a best buy runner up by the treadmilldoctor.com. It felt really good this afternoon. EC and I were supposed to do a 5 1/2 mile trail run after our ride, but she was tired. She just called and confessed that she ended up doing a 3 mile tempo run at a 6:50 pace with another running partner this afternoon. I put a major guilt trip on her b/4 I congratulated her on a great run. She is very gracious to run w/ me at my pace though!! Sorry your little man is sick today!

oh - that green light. funny, when i look at my posts, it is always green :teeth: :teeth: nice smilies, i can't right click (mac nerd)

Cam just taught me what the green light means :goodvibes It means you are on line! See my light is on? See me at my desk at work? See me not getting anything done? I might as well be home with my family.

I have no discipline...

When I had my graphic design business I was a total mac nerd. I never thought I'd go to the dark side... but I did.

Here they are. Just copy and paste the line under the one you would like to use, then change the curly bracket to a square one "{" => "["

Note: You won't see the picture until you hit "post" or "preview"

Wow - these weekly threads continue to amaze me - I thought for sure things would cool off after the races in January but it seems busier than ever around here!! It is great to read how everyone is doing and to see new members joining our group - what a nice little community we have here :)

Anyway, after a long break in training due to nasty winter colds and even nastier stomach bugs for the whole family, I am back in the groove this week. I did 4.8 miles on the t/m on Monday with jogging intervals of 2-6 minutes (I actually jogged a half mile - my longest ever!!). Then yoga on Tuesday and today I went to a new class at my fitness center - Belly Dancing  (yes that is about what I looked like in class!). It was actually pretty fun although I definitely felt awkward. Fortunately this was only the second time for the class so no one was very good :rotfl2: It didin't feel like a really intense workout but I'll wait until tomorrow to see how sore I feel before making the final evaluation. Tomorrow is pilates class and then Saturday is a LW (probably 5 miles or so) with as much jogging as possible. It feels great to be back on my training schedule and I definitely missed it - something I NEVER thought I'd say a year ago!!

Christa - I'll be out in NC (Greensboro) next week - wish I could somehow come and run with you but I guess the family we'll be visiting expects me to hang around and talk and stuff :confused3 I wonder how I will manage without access to a gym for a week???????

My dh is taking dd5 to a father-daughter Sweetheart Dance tonight. They looked so cute all dressed up - I'll try to post a picture later if I get a minute. They haven't done anything like this before - dd was worse than a teenager about getting her hair and dress just right. I thought dh was going to leave without her :rotfl: Hopefully all will go well and they will have a great time!

Gotta get ds fed and off to bath and bed!

Hope your visit to NC is a good one. You'll be just up the road from me. We are 20 minutes away from Greensboro off of 85/40.

Hi Everyone,

I still have to catch up on the posts from the past couple of days but I wanted to check in quickly to let you know that I have lost another 1.8 pounds (total weight loss since joining weight watchers - 12.6).

I also sent in my payment for joining the running club.....I can't wait to get started. :goodvibes

Jodi

I'm here! I have been working like a :dog: this week. I just got a chance to read the thread. Thanks for missing me. :cloud9:

I rode 20 miles on the bike on Sunday. I have a 28 mile ride on Saturday and then will probably ride 20 or 30 more miles on Sunday. I got a flat tire on Sunday, which made a loud bang. My Dad, who is my riding buddy, told my mom he thought I shot him! :rotfl: Luckily I had an extra tube for my tire, and my Dad changed the flat for me. (I could have done it though since I took my Ladies Bike Maintenance Class two weeks ago).

Because of work, I could not go to the gym at all this week. I plan to go tomorrow. I am going to try to run the entire time on the TM. We'll see how that goes.

Oh, and in response to the socks question, I bought Champion brand coolmax socks at Target. I think I paid $7.99 for two pair. I used them for the past 2 1/2 marathons and they worked great. I now have 12 pairs and wear them all the time with tennis shoes, even when I'm not working out.

Everyone, all I can say is whee! This thread is flying and I don't think I will ever be able to catch up. How fun!

Yay! Jodi.
Sorry, Minnie. Hope things go better with the new doc.

I like this one, Ya gotta put the steps in!

Mel, Yay on the jogging.

Hey! Speaiking of Craig, what's happened? Anyone hear from him?

Dave, seems like you have a routine going there. You are doing great!

Sorry, everyone I missed, I'm not going back that far.

Still no TM for me, and no snow to shovel tonight. I sent it to Dave!
:rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

_ooh look what I did, that's what I feel like at the moment, after two glasses of wine at my desk - not supposed to drink until Tim gets home (could see that being a bit of an issue considering I'm here all day) but it's 7.30pm and he's not home yet. Am hoping this means he's out for drinkies with his boss (which means boss has said yes to holiday). I didn't mention that we're going to Tokyo Disneyland did I - now you know why I want to go so bad!!!!!!

Anyway I have nothing useful to say as worked to late to go to the gym tonight, but am on here to stop me eating Tim's dinner too (it's upstairs looking mighty tasty!!!). Am going to run 16km one day this weekend though - all messed up as in theory I should be tapering (half is next Sunday) but as I don't feel I've actually trained properly yet I need to get in one long run and taper can begin on Monday. I figure I'm on one big long taper post marathon anyway so that must account for something - eh? Helen

Helen-Tokyo DL!!!! :hyper: I'm so jealous! I'm excited about getting to go to CA DL. I think its so cool how you get to travel everywhere. Good luck with DH getting time off & good luck on your LR this weekend.

I was wondering about Craig the other day. Come back Craig, so Dave isnt all alone :teeth:

Heather-you are doing great on your cycling. I remember you had just gotten a new bike, what kind did you get? I am hoping to be able to find a class to go to so I can learn things like fixing a flat, putting chain back on in case it comes off, etc. The maintainence I will defer to DH, just need to know what to do when I'm out & something happens. I haven't found any classes yet. Good thing dad didnt fall off the bike from the "gun shot" :)

Jodi-WTG! You are doing awesome!!!!

Rhonda-I know what you mean about missing your training schedule. I am just now able to get back to it fully because of my foot. It feels great!!!! Those aliens among us, you know!

Cam-Congrats to DD! I know that is a load off your mind to at least have a really good safety school. Great job on your running :cool1:

Sunny-you showed that server who's boss. How dare it tell you you can't have any more smiles :smooth:

MelR-Glad you are enjoying your TM. I like your titles, we arent just SAHM. We are "athletic SAHM" Think the girls at bunko will looks at me strange when I start calling myself that :confused3

Judy-isnt it great to have such a supportive DH. That is so great he surprised you like that. My DH has been wonderfully supportive and it has made all the difference. When do you get the new addition to your family?

MickeySP-be careful with your knee :wizard: Your training is going great! Awesome pace!

Mel-great job slaying those dragons! And to be able to do it at WDW is even better :thumbsup2

Christa-well, what bike are you getting? I think I am turning into a bike geek now. I am picking mine up today!! I can't wait. However, this weekend will not be good riding weather. Tomorrow is high 36 with rain/snow. Yuck! Are you going to do any charity rides after your tri? I am considering it. I have found an "all you can eat century". That's my kind of ride! It has courses for shorter distances too.

Minnie-I hope you get some relief soon. And do not stay away, we are here to support you no matter what! :grouphug:
Happy Friday everyone!
