Wk of Feb 10th-- WISH Walking/Running Club

Allie: I don't really have enough experience to answer your question, so I'm just speculating. Could you run 5K of the race and walk the rest? Or a R/W? You know, get back in the swing of racing but without pressuring yourself to run the entire race? (Or even having anything but completion as a goal.) Then you could gauge your abilities & make plans for the 10K in May.

Oh, it would DEFINITELY be a run/walk combo. There is NO way I could run the whole thing. I know that I could walk the whole thing because I've been walking for forever. I just didn't know how it would make my legs feel, if I try to run more than walk. :confused3

Alli - I hate to be a naysayer, but I think going from 2 miles to 6 in just over 2 weeks is a bit much. I think you're very smart to question it, as it is a bit much. You have planty o ftime to train and kick some booty in May, though!!!

Thanks for your feedback. I'm still thinking about it. I may ask my friends that did the race with me Sunday what they think. The husband is going to give me a training program for the 10K in May. I just would like to have a feel for how far that is. I just wouldn't want to sideline myself for May.

Allie: I am the QUEEN of pushing myself too hard so I won't tell you what I would do :rolleyes1 but we did have a friend who did RFTT w/DH this year and she had never done more than 3 1/2 before the 10K. She did finish but she did say one of the reasons she finished was because she had DH pushing her. I think it CAN be done it's probably more of a question of what is right for you and your body and risking injury? Sorry probably not much help.

Thanks for your feedback too. I think I may go drive the course and see how bad the hills are. Luckily, you go to a certain point and then turn around and come back. So if there is an uphill going, it will be a downhill coming back. :)

I was thinking the same thing. A 5K maybe, but I'd wait until May for the first 10K.

Jackie

Ok, maybe I am trying to be too ambitious. I am just really getting "into" this running thing. There is something very exhilarating about completing a race.

Yeah, Sandy, don't think that you are gonna keep me down. :rolleyes1 You're just jealous of the miles + the bonus I would earn for my team. :teacher: You know you are my inspiration. Someday I may be able to do the Half with you. Wouldn't that be fun?

Thanks everybody for your feedback. Maybe this is too lofty of a goal for right now. :confused3 That is why I came and asked you experts. I knew you would tell me the truth.

Morning everyone! :surfweb:

Is there a place where we can see what each team's totals are at each week???

Morning team! Happy Valentine's Day! Make sure to give the ones you love, lots of hugs and kisses today!

Did my first post-illness run yesterday and it was UGLY. Guess the lungs aren't completely healed, and it did not feel good. I did get a slow 3.1 miles in, so that's something. Back to the gym this morning for some xtraining.

Shan--I have to say that during the midst of a long distance event, like the marathon or half, I don't care what the facilities are like as long as I can find them when I need them. When ya gotta go, ya gotta go. I did use one in the UK in Epcot at the end of the marathon though, and boy did I get some strange looks from the park goers when I stumbled in there.

Lily--Hope the surgery went well. PD and prayers for a speedy recovery!:wizard:

Okay, gotta get DD ready for school. Have a great day all!

Stephanie - Sorry your loungs are not back to normal yet and teh run was not so good. :wizard: that it's better soon!

Shan - I think it wasd you who said your comp. shorts in your skirt ride up now. I do believe they are more apt to do that when your legs get skinnier, not larger!

Had a rest day yesterday, unless you count teh steps I put in when buying my new ASICs. ;) GOt teh 2130s, didn't feel much diff from teh 2120s. I WISH they were lime like the Kayanos, but nos uch luck. :guilty:

Good Morning everyone!!!

Stacey--So sorry to hear about your sick family!!! Hope everyone is feeling better soon!!!

SamSam--Were you able to get your walk outside in???

Debra--Really hope thing thaw out soon for you so you can get back outside! and thanks for the happy thoughts for the neurologist!

Lilly--

For me...

So, it was raining yesterday. It was my day to run (well, walk/run). I've never wanted to run in the rain before. Heck no, to the TM I go. Well, for some reason, yesterday was different. I just had this desire to get out there and get wet. Matt had a Dr appointment in Wilson yesterday. We got there and I went in and changed clothes. My parents live about 3-3.5 miles away. I told Matt I was going to run to their house. He looked at me like I was insane. Let's just say he was not too thrilled about me running on a 5 lane highway. I told him that if when he got done, and he saw me, to stop and I'd get in the car w/ him. So...to make a long story short, I ran 2 miles in 28 minutes before he picked me up. I acutally walked more than I ran, which is ok. It was actually a good place to run as I could be on flat ground just off the highway (althought I was in people's yards! No sidewalk) I wasn't too close to traffic and I could actually see a little path where it seems someone must run/walk in the same area. After he picked me up, we got to my mom and dad's neighborhood and he dropped me off at the front of the subdivision. I got in another mile for a total of 3 miles/45min.

I actually had a great time running the rain. There was this cleansing effect it had on me. I hate getting all hot and sweaty so in the rain, you just get wet. You don't feel sweaty at all! As the cars passed, I kinda giggled to myself wondering what those folks were thinking...(This girl is crazy!) :upsidedow

Hopefully my shoes will dry out and still fit ok. I've washed a pair of shoes before and they never fit the same after... :sad2: I hope since these just got soaked in the rain and I let them sit out and dry vs. sticking them in the washing machine, they will be ok. They are my newest and most expensive pair!

I will say, I need to keep better rack of my food. I know don't if I'm eating too much, not enough or just building muscle. With all the activity I've done since Sunday, I got on the scale this morning and I'm actually up in weight. ugh! :headache: Frustrating! I guess for some folks the the time spent in said activity above is not much, but for me...it's soooo much better than I was doing and about all I have time to fit in. Life is just to hectic!

Anyway...enough about me today...Hope everyone has great day!!!

Then my extra five pounds must be in my tummy than in my legs! :rolleyes1 :lmao:

OH, VERY IMPORTANT...

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY WISH!!!

Stacie: They sell a waterproofing spray for your sneaks (here at Olympia and Dick's) that you might want to look for. It works great for me outside in slush and rain as long as the puddles are not too deep!! I also invested in a pair of Adidas Gore Tex running sneaks that zip up and are ankle high. I don't like running in them too much so they have lasted me awhile.

I agree about running in the rain...it feels much better than when you sweat and your clothes stick to you.

Shan: The compression shorts ride does have something to do with your legs getting smaller not bigger. Mine ride but not bad and I have just gotten used to it. I have some compression shorts that REALLY ride and I refuse to wear them for anything except lifting now. Work with your shorts and embrace the fact that your body is changing shape!!!!

Then my extra five pounds must be in my tummy than in my legs! :rolleyes1 :lmao:
Or maybe it's muscle that has replaced fat? Trust me, mine fit best just befoer I blew them out. :O

Shan, check your booty, that's where all mine goes!!! Dang low cut jeans these days are killing me. Although DH likes it!!!

Shan: LOL, my DS6 says "your back crack is hanging out". Nice. Thanks. Lots. :lmao:

Those of you who have been around for a while know of my Valentine's day horror story. For the new WISHers here it is again:

We had 2 dogs, Erica is a big animal lover, I told her if she brought another animal home I would leave her.

I came home from work on Valentine's evening 5 years ago, sitting in my chair is a chocolate lab puppy! I said Erica, I said no more animals. She said "you like border collies". I said, "this is not a border collie, and besides what does that have to do with anything".

She said, "I was going to get you a border collie and there were none available, so I got you a chocolate lab". I said, "you were the one who wanted a chocolate lab, not me". She said, "well give her to me then".

That's how it went down, she called my bluff on leaving her on Valentines day and got the chocolate lab she had been wanting.

Now tell me was that fair?

Good morning everyone.

Panda - Loved the story.:)

Stacie - your run in the rain sounded fun and refreshing.

I ended up walking to the fitness center for a 30 minute tae-bo/aerbic class and then back home for a total of 3.5 miles outside. The sun was out so that part was great; the wind was howling so that part was not so great. Felt great when I got home.

Good Morning,

I'm not sure where to post, so I thought I would just jump in here. I've been lurking mostly and posting some on these boards since deciding last weekend to give the 1/2 marathon a shot. This is a big deal for me as I will be 52 at that time and have never done any running in my life. I have done some walking, but nothing more than a 5K, and it's been several years since I've done that.

I can't begin training at this time because I am recovering from runner's knee, doing PT & strengthening those quads. Don't want to make it worse by doing too much too soon. I would love to join in with one of the teams but all the talk of training that I can't do at this time (besides walking....and I feel I should limit that) makes me feel somewhat out of the loop.

I feel sure that I will not run the entire 1/2 marathon, but will do a walk/run. It will take me forever to read though all the teams threads. Is there one out there that has several first timers in it...especially those that are 40+? I am usually not this shy, but this whole running world (heck, the whole athletic world) is new to me, and I don't even have any idea where to begin to train. I have ordered the Marathon for Mortals book, but it hasn't arrived yet.

Sorry for rambling on like this. I would love to get to know some of you better. I met Lily (TigerLily) on a Disney Cruise 2 years ago, but the rest of you are all new to me.

Nothing much to report here. I was going to run yesterday afternoon- went to pick up baby Harry early so he could join me in the stroller, and then realized the cold front had rolled in. Major wind! We have tons of really tall pine trees in our neighborhood and I was afraid we'd be nailed by a pine cone/missile, so we stayed in. (DH had TWO windshields destroyed by pine cones last year, so it actually is a valid fear. And yes, it was irritating and expensive to replace two windshields, but I laughed like crazy because DH is sooo particular about his car. We've since cut down the offending trees and DH sold the car because it was jinxed. ;) )

Allie- I started running last January, and had worked my way up to 3-4 miles on a TM when I entered a 10k in March. Is there anyway to check last year's results for your race? I ran about an 11 minute pace and was pretty close to DLF. There were some people way behind me, but I spent the last 3 miles alone, unhappy, and afraid (it was a swamp run, and I saw two snakes!) Had I done a bigger 10k where I could have had some company, I think I would have had a much better time.

Shan- hello, your ring falls off and now your running skirt's shorts are riding up?! Girl, you have so lost inches and you don't even realize it. :cheer2: Have you tried shorts again? I gave up on the skirts (for now).

Lily- we're thinking of you!

Dave- too funny! So when you're out and about in your girly car, does the lab get to go too?

Hi Mary,

Like you, I am a non-runner (I guess I'll have to stop saying that soon), and until a few weeks ago had no clue this group existed. But now, I've signed up to run the Minnie 15k--yes, RUN. And I celebrate the big 5-0 this year (--now if only I can get into the FCI chocolate class that I have been eyeing!)

The team thing is a recent invention--done to keep people motivated as they train for various things throughout the year. Not everyone is part of team, but no matter, the overall board and the weekly threads have lots of conversation/encouragement/tips, etc going on.

Things do move fast sometime, but everyone is very friendly & sometimes silly, empathetic, moving, mildly irritating :rolleyes1.

Just hang in--or on-- and I'm sure in no time you will feel at home. I'm beginning to really like this group!:goodvibes
