Wk of Feb 10th-- WISH Walking/Running Club

Good Morning,

I'm not sure where to post, so I thought I would just jump in here. I've been lurking mostly and posting some on these boards since deciding last weekend to give the 1/2 marathon a shot. This is a big deal for me as I will be 52 at that time and have never done any running in my life. I have done some walking, but nothing more than a 5K, and it's been several years since I've done that.

I can't begin training at this time because I am recovering from runner's knee, doing PT & strengthening those quads. Don't want to make it worse by doing too much too soon. I would love to join in with one of the teams but all the talk of training that I can't do at this time (besides walking....and I feel I should limit that) makes me feel somewhat out of the loop.

I feel sure that I will not run the entire 1/2 marathon, but will do a walk/run. It will take me forever to read though all the teams threads. Is there one out there that has several first timers in it...especially those that are 40+? I am usually not this shy, but this whole running world (heck, the whole athletic world) is new to me, and I don't even have any idea where to begin to train. I have ordered the Marathon for Mortals book, but it hasn't arrived yet.

Sorry for rambling on like this. I would love to get to know some of you better. I met Lily (TigerLily) on a Disney Cruise 2 years ago, but the rest of you are all new to me.

Mary

Mary let me know when you are ready to join a team. I have openings and there are several newbees on each team.

Welcome to our world. I'm one of the few sane ones on here so watch out for some of the really strange on here:

Kristi: recently escaped from a funny farm is Up State New York and is believed to have gone to ground in NH.

Bill: was abducted by aliens and they did some things that were just awefull to him, so if he sounds like he is not all there, please be kind.

Jeanne: Is a reforming chocolateaholic. She did time for a midnight commando raid at the Hershey's factory.

Judy: Is queen of a small army of folk called the "YARC".

Mel: Watch out for her, she once turned a fellow WISHer into a toad.

Vic: He is really out there, his mind had an out of body experience and never came back.

Craig: He is hiding in the academic world, he was run out of the fashion world for being just to weird. Has been known to enjoy the company of rabbits.

Well you get the idea. It's a weird world out there so be careful.

Normal Panda:hippie:

Mary - :welcome:

Don't believe everything that Crazier Than a Run Over Dog Panda says. :rolleyes1 :rotfl:

Mel: Watch out for her, she once turned a fellow WISHer into a toad.

That's right...that dust stuff isn't just for pixies ;)

Welcome MaryJ!

Separate, unrelated question.

Is anyone available next weekend to be the threadspinner? I believe we'll be off to WDW!

Things do move fast sometime, but everyone is very friendly & sometimes silly, empathetic, moving, mildly irritating :rolleyes1.

Maura

Mildly irritating?? Did I hear someone call out for me? :cool2:

Welcome, MaryJ! Just like the Haunted Mansion, there's always room for one more!

Oh, what is the difference between time entry and time calc on the spreadsheet?

The entry column is in hours and minutes and the calc column pits it into decimal form.

Mary - Welcome! ANy friend of LIly's is most certainly a friedn of ours! Look forward to hearing abou t your training.

Mel - Next weekend, as teh one after teh one coming up or as in the one a few days away. If it's teh few days away one, I can help.

Panda, Erica so rocks! :rockband: I like her tactics! :thumbsup2

Welcome Mary! :goodvibes

Jen in GA - I so wish! I swear I have gained five pounds since the holidays and it refuses to come off! I know I'm chubbier, cause my summer shorts are tight and I'm concerned I'm gonna have to get all new shorts for spring break. :headache: Now why my rings are falling off and my running skirt shorts are now creeping up is beyond me. Maybe my legs are now a little tighter, but my tummy is not.

So tell me, what brand of running shorts are you using now? Maybe I need to give up the running skirts and try something new. I so don't want chub rub, though!

I can handle that for you.

Got your princesses mixed up this time.....Nancy is the one who lives a stone's throw from Hershey. Just put me down as the WISHer who recruits for nudie races! :rotfl:

Aloha all, and happy Valentine's day

Shan & Princess

You've got "Plumber's crack", I thought only men had that problem. Good going, your bodies are shrinking away, and now you have to go get new running gear. Nothing wrong with that.

I keep showing my wife how my clothes are all loose, and she keeps handing me a belt. So much for her "catching on" that I need new work clothes. LOL. :rotfl:

Now I have to remove my wedding band on race days, since it's gotten so loose. I don't want to worry about loosing it while I sprint for the finish line.

Lost photos
I was scanning the lost photos on ASI from the WDW half and full marathon. There are quite a few WISHERS in there. It takes a while to click page after page, but if you didn't get an official email with your pictures, be sure to go check. What's weird is the race numbers are readable, but the WISHERs still ended up in the Lost files.

Have a good training day for those logging miles today. I plan to do 6-8 miles this afternoon.

Great Aloha Run expo starts tomorrow here in Honolulu. Wooooo Whooo, more freebies and new gear to inspect.

Jeff - dh was searching photos and in his group is a guy that is not him - and he clicked on it to find that the guy's bib number matched dh's number!! :scared1:

Also dh was excited because the splits are posted on that website, and while he got slower as time went on, he was happy to inform me I got faster - well until they turned off the chip timer at the finish line (get over it Sandy :sad2: ) My first 5K I did a 15+ min mile pace, I slowed in the MK (of course!!) but was still on track with 16min miles - then the next 5K dh said was my fastest of all!! Just wait till 2010!! (of course I think he just used that info to talk me into another 1/2 marathon in May!! :faint: Galena IL I think has a half and a full marathon weekend!! or was in Geneva WI??? hmmm guess I'd better find out!! :rotfl2: )

Shan is that TMI??? :rolleyes1

sending prayers, positive thoughts, and some :pixiedust: to Northern Illinois Univ - its about 45 min west of where I live, and several of my sons friends attend there - A school shooting, around 3pm CST today - as many as 18 have been reported injured -

I stopped listening and made calls to my boys - they go to Univ of IL - and they're ok -

*sigh... I here the Wicked Witch of the West... "...what a world, what a world"

Happy Valentine's Day! Here's a little chocolate gift, from the very bottom of my heart:

Angie: 2 hours at the gym...and you're cheating?? You really are a runner (and I mean that in the best sense). Cheating for me involves, I don't know, untold quantities of caffeine, chocolate, wine, and sultry men. Not necessarily in that order.

TXAng: I'm keeping positive thoughts for you, in hopes that you can begin running soon!

Allie: Are there any 5Ks around you? It seems like such a pity not to take advantage of that raring to race feeling.

Stephanie: Whoo-hoo on the miles in, though! Slow, and ugly (sorry about that), but you completed them.

Carrie: Congrats on the new shoes. Now I have shoe envy, which is nothing like ***** envy in case you're wondering. (Gotta love our censors.)

Stacie: Wow, wanting to run in the rain. I can't imagine it being a great time, but I'm so glad you found it to be so! I know what you mean about training weight; mine likes me--a lot.

Lisa: Thanks for the tip about the waterproofing spray. That's two of you who like running in the rain. Makes me wonder what I'm missing. It's not as if I'm so sweet I'd melt.

WWDave: Was that fair? Yep. And I bet you that chocolate lab is the best chocolate Erica's ever had. :goodvibes

SamSam: WTG on walking to the fitness center! Don't you love doing double-duty like that!

JeninGA: Are you sure the pinecone accidents were due to wind conditions and not irate squirrels? :confused3

Aloha Jeff: Yea, yea, yea. You need to take the band off because it's loose? Are you sure it's not because races are a great place to meet people??? :rotfl2: Good luck with the Aloha Run. I hope there's really cool swag.

Sandy: That's great news with the splits. BUT... I've been away from news all day, and am really saddened about the NIU news. :sad1: Thanks for letting us know.

As for me: I have to say that the Chi Running book may be slowly convincing me of its usefulness. I tried a couple of exercises, and they make a lot of sense. I'm pretty sure the ideas are what natural, efficient runners do; I am neither, and so need all the help I can get. I'm not sure I'll try to adopt it full-scale yet, but it's reaffirmed my need to practice yoga regularly. And I think I need to commit to trying Chi Walking for a while; Chi Running might be a little much for me to process right now. I did manage to make it outdoors for a little walk today (still too icy to run for any real distance, each block has huge strips of ice alternating with dry spots. But I attempted some of the book's suggestions and I think the ideas will make a difference in my form over the long-term.

Jeff: I so do not have a plumbers crack....mine is much cuter than that dang it. :snooty:

That according to my very wise Uncle!! (whilst my cousin looked upon me in shock and said "daddy - I didnt know girls sweat" :rotfl2: since I was in jr hi I wasnt embarrassed, I was playing tennis - he also didnt know he could lose to a girl!! :rotfl2: :rotfl2: )
