WK of December 28 - WISH Walking/Running Club

Haouli Makahiki Hou from the island of Maui.

I didn't make it out on the midnight run last night as I had hoped. Sleep just seemed the better option.

We got up, and did our Polar Bear swim. Must have been 76 degrees out at 9:30 am when we hit the water. Probably 82 by noon. My keiki were in the pool for about 7 hours. (Roger, these are for you).

While the family stayed at the pool, I headed out for a 8 mile run. Hot and humid at 2 pm!

I know have a stuffing/running nose (still can't figure out how your sinuses can be stuffy and runny at the same time???) and a tickly cough fromt he post nasal drip. Not feeling badly, so I just keep going forward and taking my vitamins and drinking my DanActive!!

Have a great day everyone!!

I'm liking those temps much better! Makes it easier to know what to pack if it is going to be a warmer day! The suitcase made it up from the basement last night and today will go up to the bedroom. Hoping to start throwing some things in!

Planning just a 3 miler on the TM today too. Hope everyone has a great day!

Hi Everyone!

I am off to the Doctor for a final systems check today. Unfortunately, I have a pretty sore throat so I can go in and say "I am all better now so tell my husband to quit hiding my ticket to Orlando." I don't think it will stop her from giving me the ok but it might make her run more tests. Life is hell when your paranoid husband's training partner is a doctor!

I am getting excited about the races though. And getting to see/meet everyone at the POP Century meet!

Hey WISHers. Hope everyone had a nice NYE. We stayed at home, but missed WDW badly. Last two years we spent it celebrating at WDW. DH really did a good job entertaining the kids, though. He cooked dinner!, bought fireworks and sparklers, got the kids sparkling grape juice and let them drink it in Minnie and Mickey wine glasses (They thought that was a real hoot!), made cookies with 2009 on them and ice cream sundaes and watched our old videos from the Epcot and MK NYE fireworks. I think they had fun. Still need to take down Christmas decorations... I really have so much to do before we leave Thursday! :scared:

Yesterday DH and I ran a Resolution Run 5K. I wasn't planning on running hard, it was not a chip timed event. It actually fit in perfectly with my taper. DH even ran with me, which doesn't happen too often since I'm way slower than him. Well, I ended up having a PR! :woohoo: I ran it in 31:42, a 10:11 pace. I now kinda wish I would have pushed myself a tad harder. I usually run in the 10:30 to 11:30 range so I was pleasantly surprised with myself!

On a more serious note, DH thinks he has hurt his foot in a bad way. I'm now worrying about him running the half with me. So if you could send pixie dust his way that would be great! I think he is trying to act like it doesn't bother him around me, but I keep seeing him wince and limp when he thinks I'm not looking. :headache:

Day two on Maui...

Went to a goat farm, my kids loved feeding the "kids".

Drove up to the top of Haleakala National Park, where the summit of the volcano is 10,000+ feet up. 42 degrees + windchill. Felt about 20 degrees.

Tracy, saline your nose to loosen everything up.

Shan, tell your hubby to R.I.C.E. his ankle.

Hi to everyone else out there.

Good Morning WISHers!!!!

So,.... how's the tapering goin?? Anyone lost there brains yet?:lmao:

One week from today I will be about 5 miles into the Half Marathon!!!:cool1:

Weather forecast:

Wed: High 78 Low 50 Showers 40% rain
Thur: High 67 Low 43 Sunny 0% rain
Fri (5K): High 69 Low 49 Sunny 0% rain
Sat (Half): High 75 Low 51 Partly Sunny 0% rain
Sun (Full): High 73 Low 47 Showers 60% rain
Mon: High 70 Low 46 Partly Cloudy 10% rain

Tends to be the warmest around 1-3pm and the coolest temps are around 6-7am right before sunrise.

I have my suitcases out and have started putting together stuff that I need for each day, stuff for each race (5K and Half), stuff I need for the EXPO (wavers in a folder) the nametags for the meet, the visors and hats I need to get to people. I have one extra hat and 1 extra visor that I am bringing to the meet. THe hat is 15.75 and the visor is 15.25. I will have no change with me, so the first person who shows up and wants them - I'll take cash or a check.

Have a good Saturday everyone!!

Hi Everyone!

The new drugs kicked in last night and I am starting to feel like the real me. There is hope that I can finish Goofy after all! I still have a massive sinus infection but the lungs sound good.

Funny story. My Doctor walked me down to the xray room and told the tech "We need to make sure she is healthy enough to kill herself next weekend." Gee thanks for the vote of confidence Doc!
Then when she sent the nurse in to give me yet another steroid shot she leaves me with "don't win - you probably won't pass a drug test!"

So I guess I am in this to win or die? Hmm I don't like either option. (Winning would be way to much work. lol)

Jeff- its winter on the main land. You are killing us with your pictures! I still think you need to open a B&R (Bed and Run)

Interesting article in my Racewalking e-newsletter:

If you add just 2000 more steps a day to your regular activities, you may never gain another pound. So says research by Dr. James O. Hill of the Center for Human Nutrition at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. To lose weight, add in more steps.

Sedentary people in the USA generally move only 2000-3000 steps a day. Previous studies have shown that moving 6000 steps a day significantly reduces risk of death, and 8000-10,000 a day promotes weight loss.

How far is 2000 steps? It is about a mile. But the benefits for health and for weight management don't depend on you walking a mile all at one time, but simply adding in more steps throughout the day.

By wearing a pedometer all day, you are motivated to add in extra steps whenever you can. There are many little trips that can add up to a mile or two a day - parking further from the door of your destination, taking the stairs rather than the elevator, pace around as you talk on the telephone, take a marching-in-place minute once an hour.

"All in all, it is entertaining to ponder that such a seemingly insignificant gadget may be of practical importance in the war on obesity!" said Catrine Tudor-Locke, Ph.D., Department of Exercise and Wellness, Arizona State University in the conclusion of a report by the President's Council of Physical Fitness and Sports, June, 2002.

Good Morning everyone!

It's dreary here. My alarm went off at 6:30 to go join the NEW Galloway Group that's training for the Country Music and ING and I WIMPED! I had really been back and forth all week on this. I figure they would only do two miles since it's the first meeting and I needed to do more. My current group was doing 11 miles, too much...

So I slept until 8:30 put on my clothes and drove to the river. Did 5.22 miles in just over an hour. Avg right around 12.26 a mile. Not bad for me. I did do a 3/1 interval which will not be what I do next Sat. I am sticking with 2/1.

I then got VERY BRAVE and took "kind of" an ice bath. I took the ice out of the freezer, poured it in the tub, ran cold water and when it looked like it would cover the back half of my legs got in. Actually not as bad as I imagined, but I probably didn't have enough ice. I figure it's the back of my calfs that always SCREAM so lets try this... And sadly I think it helped... Not sure how much of that I can take, but I may try again next Sat so I can enjoy the parks more!

Jeff, those photos make me so jealous!

Lenshan, when are you leaving Thursday? Are you flying? Maybe we will run into each other at the airport! LOL! I have the 12:30 flight.

Cecelia, Tell your Doc we won't let you kill yourself.

Wish I could make the POP meet, but the boyfriend gets in late and we have to go pick up his stuff. Plus I think he might have a cardiac arrest moment. I have told him about this group, but I don't think he gets it!

Have a good weekend everyone!

Cecilia, I do WISH that you will be much better for this weekend. You've got to be! You'll do well, just don't push out too fast.

Jeff, ugh on those pics. You are killing us here. (ok, well, really they are nice)

Carol, good job getting out there and then in the cold water. A trick I learned from someone here is to sit in the cold water with a sweatshirt and a hot cup of tea. Works wonders! I just do mostly cold water as we get really cold water out of our taps here on the North Coast.

And, thanks for the pedometer info.

See everyone next weekend! Wow!

I guess I didn't report in on this thread yesterday. I did a 9 miler - didn't quite make it to 10 but the 9 felt good. Well that was after I got past the first 2 miles. I took pictures but I dont have them uploaded yet. My background isn't as pretty as Jeff's but I don't think its bad. Will post pics when I get the uploaded.

Jeff, you are always teasing us with those photos! I must say, I am amazed at how much fun you pack into a single day! Your princesses are lucky girls. Can't wait to see you next week! Woohoo!

Tracy: We're almost there! How is your mom doing? Is she ready? DH was asking if she would be walking with all of us, too, but I said only for the 5k (that's right, right?). See you in less than a week!

Allyson, hope you got through the 3 miles on the treadmill yesterday! Maybe we'll see you around the YC/BC next weekend! :)

Cecilia, I'm so glad you feel like the drugs are finally working. Do you saline rinse your sinuses? As much as I hated to try it (I was afraid of drowning--my DH shook his head and said, "I doubt your doctor would tell you to do it if it would drown you. It would be bad for business."), I found it helped more than the drugs for cleaning out my sinuses and more importantly for me, to help with the post-nasal drip (ewww). Regardless, I hope you are on the mend for the festivities next week! :) PD to you! :wizard:

Shannon
: PD to your husband! :wizard: I hope his foot is okay. Well done on the PR, btw! :woohoo: DH took the decorations down on New Year's Day so that we could have the house ready for our weekend away next week--I hate un-decorating. Sounds like your DH made NYE super-special! See you next week!

CarolA: Sorry you won't be at POP! My DH didn't understand about the WISH group either, but then I brought him to the Minnie meet. Now he asks about our WISH friends all the time! Well done on getting your steps in, btw.

Lily
: Thank you for the hints on making an ice bath more bearable. I'm afraid of the very thought of an ice bath, but after not being able to get out of bed the morning after the Minnie, I think I need to try it! We booked the BC so that we can walk back after the half, too, in an effort to avoid a repeat of last year (although I think I did provide Liz and Pat a good laugh!).

Tricia: We tried to take photos of our walk, but it was so cold we had to cut it short. Great job getting those miles in! We'll be in WDW before we know it!

AFM, it was supposed to be 41 degrees but it was about 35 and windy. We got a mile in and DH said he thought it was a bad idea. I wasn't wearing a scarf :sad2: and my throat was starting to get sore from the cold. Even though I had used my inhaler, it was hard to breathe. So we'll mall walk tomorrow instead. Not ideal but better than not walking. And we only have a few days left to taper!

Can't wait to see everyone next week. One week from this moment, I'll (hopefully) be basking in the glow of a Donald medal. :)
