Wk of Dec 24--WISH Walking/Running Club

It's been awhile since I've posted. I read often but have trouble keeping up with everyone. You all are a very encouraging bunch. It's been fun reading when I find the time.
My DH and I will be running/walking the half. I have a few questions I thought the experts on this board might be able to answer.
I have difficulty during my long walks with my hands swelling. They seem to return to normal about 30 minutes after I finish. Does this happen to anyone else? Any suggestions on what I can do to avoid the swelling/puffiness in my hands?
My other question is about bathrooms during the race. I have read that there are some before you get to the corrals. What about on the course? Are there any before MK?

We'll be staying at POP. Maybe we'll meet up with everyone at the Friday meet.

Good news from the cardiologist. My stress test was perfect, and I can do the marathon. :cool1: He thinks the chest pain is caused by anxiety and stress. Stress? Who has stress? :confused3 :rotfl:

DH is feeling stronger today. He still has a cough, but he is feeling 100% better. He says he is definitely on for the Goofy. I am so excited. We will see everyone next Friday! :cheer2:

Momoftwins- There are port-o-pottys at several places along the course, but the best restrooms are the regular rest rooms at the TTC and in the MK. As to fingers swelling, this is very common. You might try elevating your hands during the race and shaking your wrists. You will look funny, but it does help. Sometimes holding your arms bent at an angle (think race walking) for a while instead of leaving them down by your side the whole time works. Just remember not to wear any rings so that if you experience swelling, you will not be uncomfortable for 13.1 miles. Also, because it will be on the warm side on Saturday, you will be more prone to swelling because of the heat. Just relax and have a great race. :goodvibes

Craig- I didn't know that you were a Longhorn! Cam shouldn't have spilled the beans about you being a good hugger. You may be mobbed at the WISH meet. ;)

Okay, I better start packing. We're going to Disney World! Somebody pinch me! :woohoo:

I get this pretty bad. I just chalk it up to my bad circulation. I do kind of 'pump' my hands - make fists & release. I don't know if it really helps, but I guess I feel like I am doing something to keep the fluids pumping.

I also second not wearing any rings! I even keep my Garmin really loose - it swings around my wrist a bit.

Ok, it's like 10pm & I only have Zack packed! :scared1: Oh, it's gonna be a long night...

Hey! Just popping in real quick....
Have had some kind of stomach bug thing...not a pretty sight! Still not feeling well.
Did get to run Christmas Eve around 5 miles and 2 days ago...around 9 miles while I was at sis's ILs...they are the BEST and live where it is a runners dream...except for the major HILLS!;)

Anyway...

Heather - I may be real late on this and you may already know what is wrong b/c I could not read all the posts and kinda skimmed but....
Have the Dr check your Gallbladder (sp?). My mom has had to go to the ER b/c she thought she was having a heart attack. I have had the same thing happen to me during stressful times and this is what it is for me too....The Dr also said extream acid reflux can feel this way....be careful and lotts of :grouphug:

Dave - so cool about the princess: princess: !

Boy is still sick. He now has a fever again after 2 rounds of antibiotics. We went to the dr. yesterday and he thought it was an ear infection that just hasn't cleared up. He does not get sick very often but this is just hanging on. he got a shot yesterday, but they had to do it in both legs as it was too much med for one. I'm really starting to worry about him. He felt good enough to enjoy christmas day and a day w/ his gparents, but yesterday he felt awful and he is not much better today. My heart is breaking and face is breaking out!
Melissa - Lotts of :grouphug: :grouphug: for you! I hate it when my babies are sick!

Sunny - I keep trying to PM you back & the system is all screwy! Chad doesn't want to walk over to the half later. He says I will miss out on the experience. :confused3 Maybe Mom & I can win out on this one...we'll see. I have your information & I'll see you in WDW! Gotta get packing!

Hydrate? That is what works for me. Not just while running but before and after as well. Just make sure you are drinking enough right now to keep you from retaining fluid during the race. Its a tricky balance because this lead to your second question about the portapotties. Me? well, between the fact that powerade is my only race fuel and the fact that my bladder served as a punching bag for 3 kids, I just factored 3 -4 portapotty breaks into my time. Sigh.

Melissa - Sorry to hear about your son. How fustrating and a bit scary that the infection isn't responding to the antibiotics. I have been there. My oldest is allergic to almost every antibiotic and guess how we figured that out?! I hope this latest round works!

Howard - You are going to wait until Friday to carb load? I have already started!!! Where did I read that you should be getting 70% of your calories from carbs the week prior to the marathon? I wonder if they meant cookies and candy? probably not.

I am saving my 5lb bag of jelly bellies for the plane ride. Do you think 5 lbs is enough for a one hour flight? Do you think I should put them in 3 oz portions just in case the airport staff has never heard of carb loading? I need to reread the packing post....

oh and I thought I would try to share this website:

All of you b______y people better be un-b________y come Friday afternoon. You don't want me to go "Military" on ya! ;)
:lmao: Yes, sir!

Cecilia - maybe I will stay home & fly with you. You might need help with 5 lbs. of jelly bellys! Yum!

We are off to visit yhe Mouse. See everyone on Friday.

Happy New Year.

Is everyone ready? Hey all, I feel really like a slacker here because I have been so lax in posting. I see all the great training, trials and tribulations of you all and simply have had no time to reply- I am trying to get in about half an hour this morning before DD and DS get up and start me running - with DW's issues from the accident, DD and DS and mostly over-work. Well here is some PD:wizard: for all of you struggling with illness or injuries or family illness (Mel my DS has had 4 operations, for tube placement, on his ears for infections that would not clear because his ears would not drain so I feel your pain) and here is a bit of celebrating for everyone on their way to run down the World  :thumbsup2 :cheer2: . I finished my final long run this morning by 8 am and it felt weird to be done so early. I got in 10.2 miles and my pace - even with maintianing my max aerobic HR - was 8:27 for a 1:25 total time. This was suprising because I have been consistently running right at 9 min per mile pace on all of my other long runs. I hope this is a good sign for the Goofy next weekend. See all of you next weekend. Happy New Year, Safe travel and remember that the journey of a thousand miles starts with one step and the Goofey runner takes thousands of those steps for three medals.

Umm, no, I have proven history that I need no help with 5 lbs of jelly bellys.

But I will be glad to bring extra!!!!

That means another trip to Super Target and then I can buy some for the drive home!! I have to buy at Super Target because I only really like about 5 or 6 flavors and they have the separate bins so you buy only the flavors you like.

I ran 10 this morning. My legs felt like feathers. It was great! I am less panic ridden about race day now.

Hello Team:

I did 7 miles today. It felt very easy. I had a little bit of congestion in my head from my cold, but other than that it was fine. I had 4 miles at 9:30 mpm pace, and then I took some long walk breaks to intentionally slow myself down. I ended up doing the 7 miles at 11 mpm overall, but I felt really good.

Eek! Closer, getting closer! Haven't taken the time to get outside today, but packing weekend is upon me. Goal is to have all I am taking put into a suitcase before I get back to work. It's happening!

PD to all the families with kidlets who are not well, PD to all who are not well, PD to all that we are healed and healthy as we step off in a week!

Note to self: spot Super Target on drive today & get some Jelly Bellys!

Hi everyone, :wave2:

We are home from our Christmas trip to Canada. I am so glad to be home and to get my head around to packing for next weekend!

Looks like I was on the same taper plan as Sunny and MelR, mine consisted of one 3 mile run/walk in the last 8 days and that was on an old treadmill. DS was sick with the flu the week before we left for Canada and then guess who came down with the flu on December 22nd??? You guessed it! I am just know getting my lungs back to normal, they were pretty congested for about 5 days. I was able to get a 6 mile run in yesterday that felt pretty good. Hoping for a few 4 milers this week and then that will be it!

Let's talk weather.............OH MY, IT WILL BE HOT!!!!

I am going to have to rethink everything! I was always thinking another 35 degree start like last year, but now a 60 degree start. I am going to melt!! I spoke to a friend who ran it 2 years ago when it was hot and she was hoping for a 4:45 finish time and she ended up 5:30!

Lily, can you remember how hot it was 2 years ago?

I see a few of our WISHers are already on their way to WDW! Wow, it is so close now!

My Marathon Dream

Forgot to mention, I slept very poorly last night. I woke up at 4:02 and thought to myself, oh in one week, I will already be dropping off my gear bag and heading to the WISH meet before the half marathon.

Then I fell back to sleep and started dreaming about running the half, everything was going well, I was run/walking with Mel and Jen. We were about an hour into the race when Howard and Matt comes up behind us, they talk with us for a few minutes and then Howard says, "Colleen, wear is your timing chip"?? I forgot my chip!!

I wasn't too concerned at first, but then I realized I may have problems getting my Goofy medal and/or certificate if I didn't have an official time for the half. I did some quick calculating and decided to run back to POFQ to pick up my chip and then RESTART the race. :scared1: Did I have enough time to run back to the hotel and run the half in the remaining 2 and a half hours left? I woke up in a sweat! Oh, how I hate those dreams!:guilty:

Thanks to all those wishin Lynnda good thoughts. The doctor was impressed yesterday with the improvement and figured that a hospital stay was not necessary. I threatened no 'Ohana on Sunday night if she couldn't eat and she got better almost overnight. :lmao: He did set her up to see and ENT on Tuesday to vaccuum her ear. I could do it much cheaper but she doesn't seem too keen on the idea. :rolleyes1 At least this time she didn't try to rip my head off so her sense of humor is returning and she seems to be more cheerful.

I got in my last run this morning with a total of 10 miles at an 11:52 pace. I think there are just walks around the neighborhood next week to take it easy.

Afterwards, I tempted fate and climbed on the roof to clean the dryer port since someone was complaining of cloths drying too slowly. I didn't fall but there were enough people around that said they would catch me if necessary. ;)

If the weather is like it was this morning, it should be nice to run in. It could be a little cooler but it wasn't that bad starting out, as long as there is a breeze.

We hope that everyone has safe travels out here. We will go over on Thursday and get checked in for everything.

Bill

Hot?? I'm rather excited that it will be nice and cool but not too cold. Texas summer long runs are still fresh on my mind!

Kristi- just click on the "Track a runner!" link on the page that you got to from the marathon page. They messed up and labeled both banners on the separate FAQ pages as "Half Marathon". Once you click it sends you to the correct page. I was confused also.

Waddle on!

I think the start temp was 65 and for the finish time of the full it was nearly 80 degress..they had many many many extra people in the med tents at the finish due to dehydration.

Basically--trust your thirst and try to anticipate it and be ahead of it--often by the time you are thirsty in the real world..your body has needed the fluid for some time.

I was in race gear by the time I corralled. I wore layers for tradition--but shed them very quickly before the race even started.

I had other mitigating factors for my finish time (The flu being numero uno!) but my expected finish time was ~6:00 and I finished in 7:15 and change (less than 1 minute after they shut off the mats for official race finishers). The heat definitely hampered me as I had trouble keeping fluids down anyway---and so became minimally dehydrated as a result. Had the temps been 10-20 degrees cooler, it might not have been so bad.

Just really concentrate on the fluids--the temps as forecasted are butt kickers!

It is really really really deceiving and not many people trust that--that is from the mouths of my coaches from 2 years ago and the mouth of the entire Central Florida team in training team (200+ athletes that year).

Take the opportunity at water stops to dump water on your head in addition to drinking that second cup. (JUST MAKE SURE IT IS WATER OR YOU WILL BE SUPREMELY STICKY!!!!). Anything to help you keep cool. I don't know what they do for the half in the heat--2 years ago---since it was same day, same course..nothing really extra...for the full---somewhere around animal kingdom they were distributing sponges. Take advantage of these if offered.

Please do not be deceived by the weather if you want to have a good race....70s at mile 20 is extraordinarily hot even though it may not feel like it. Especially if you haven't trained at those temps.

Respect the temps and you will have a good race!

Colleen - Your dream made me giggle. If it were my dream, I would have tried to figure out a way to "share" a chip! And how come Matt and Howard were behind us? Were we running faster than them??? :rotfl:

I did my 5 miles on my home treadmill. Since I don't particulary care for my home TM anymore, I did a run 3 walk 2. The run 3 always seems fast to me, so I think the treadmill is off a little. But overall I felt really good at the end. No muscle aches at all, except my breathing was a little off. I think I need a new inhaler, so I called in my prescription. The run makes me think back to October when I was petrified of my longest run ever, 5 miles. Now it seems like nothing.

We went shopping after my run to stock up on snacks for the trip. When you bring 2 little kids, cheap snacks are important. Disney can make me go broke with their expensive food. Once we get there we will be hitting a store for bottled water and soda, again, Disney can make us go broke with how much water I drink!!!

Happy tapering everyone. See you in less than a week!

Colleen - I was there 2 years ago and I can say it was HOT at the end! I knew when I was at the starting line in shorts and a tank (and not cool) I was in for a LONG RUN! But we did it and it was fun! WDW is really great with the aid stations and this makes it easier!
I HATE to even say this, but I may not be wearing the WISH shirt if it is that warm....It is a great shirt for the cooler temps, but I have found it does not move sweat (yes I sweat) as good as my other shirts/tanks....I may be the only one who thinks this....
