Wk of Dec 24--WISH Walking/Running Club

Ok, not to scare anyone, but this nightmare is a true story! DH, RachaelQ, and I were at about mile 9 of the DL half when we noticed someone in front of us come to an abrupt stop, reach down and pick something up. It was someone's chip - just laying there on the ground. The person who picked it up said he would be sure to swipe it over the mats so whoever it belonged to would have an official time, but can you imagine that poor person going to get his/her chip cut off at the end of the race and realizing it isn't there:scared1: :scared1:

I've spent the day getting organized and doing laundry - definitely counts as XT in my book! And I did get in about 5 miles, some on the TM and some at the forest preserve walking with DH and our two retrievers.

The weather forecast is probably all my DH's fault. I had seen a lime green headband/earwarmy thing at the store where I got my new shoes. Should have bought it and didn't...so DH went on a mission to get it for me, which entailed trips to several different stores and finally special ordering it. He was so happy because he didn't want me to be too cold while I walk the full. Now it looks like I will be plenty warm without it!

As Mickey says...."See ya real soon"

Colleen - Your dream made me giggle. If it were my dream, I would have tried to figure out a way to "share" a chip! And how come Matt and Howard were behind us? Were we running faster than them??? :rotfl:

I know,:rotfl: dreams never make any sense. They both looked fresh as daisies, and get this, they were in shorts and singlets and we were all dressed for 35 degrees (picture Mel in her garb from last year:rotfl: ).

Basically--trust your thirst and try to anticipate it and be ahead of it--often by the time you are thirsty in the real world..your body has needed the fluid for some time.

I was in race gear by the time I corralled. I wore layers for tradition--but shed them very quickly before the race even started.

I had other mitigating factors for my finish time (The flu being numero uno!) but my expected finish time was ~6:00 and I finished in 7:15 and change (less than 1 minute after they shut off the mats for official race finishers). The heat definitely hampered me as I had trouble keeping fluids down anyway---and so became minimally dehydrated as a result. Had the temps been 10-20 degrees cooler, it might not have been so bad.

Just really concentrate on the fluids--the temps as forecasted are butt kickers!

It is really really really deceiving and not many people trust that--that is from the mouths of my coaches from 2 years ago and the mouth of the entire Central Florida team in training team (200+ athletes that year).

Take the opportunity at water stops to dump water on your head in addition to drinking that second cup. (JUST MAKE SURE IT IS WATER OR YOU WILL BE SUPREMELY STICKY!!!!). Anything to help you keep cool. I don't know what they do for the half in the heat--2 years ago---since it was same day, same course..nothing really extra...for the full---somewhere around animal kingdom they were distributing sponges. Take advantage of these if offered.

Please do not be deceived by the weather if you want to have a good race....70s at mile 20 is extraordinarily hot even though it may not feel like it. Especially if you haven't trained at those temps.

Respect the temps and you will have a good race!

Thanks for the great reminders, Lisa!

Everyone remember to pack sunscreen too!

MelR- sorry to hear DS is sick. I had major ear problems when I was a kid. Tubes put in several times. Even today, I have to take precaution when I g swimming. I always have some type of plug or vaseline & lambs wool that must go in my ear before I hit the pool.

I just started packing my things. I leave Wed. morning. I feel much more nervous than last year. Maybe because I now know what to expect. Plus having been sidelined with the cold for several weeks is leaving me feeling underprepared. Now I have to worry about the heat.

Maybe I'm just anxious and worried for nothing. Maybe I'll have a great two days. Maybe I'm just going crazy because I want to leave for WDW already! Ahhh!!!!

Terri

Terri, I your comment interesting about how you are more nervous this time because you know what it takes to do the Goofy! I too am nervous this year, more so because of the weather forecast. I would take that 35 degrees last year ANY day of the week over what we are in for.

Amybeth and Maggie, hope all is well with both of you! Check in if you have time!

Colleen
