Wk of Dec 2--WISH Walking/Running Club

Amy, so sorry to hear about your difficulties. :grouphug:

Just remember all those months you put down a good base. It won't disappear in a week or two. Keep up with your treatments and cross training this week and see how things are next week.

Oh and yes, walking is hard! I started a 5 run 1 walk in an attempt to do that for the half and I was really sore after! You walkers rock! And those of you who walk 13, 14, 15 minute miles, all I can say is WOW, I could barely keep a 16 minute mile walk going!

Check out the new thread on the $40 off shoes I posted!

Ok, I was skimming & maybe I missed this, but I just saw this on allears:

The Riverside Mill Food Court at Port Orleans Riverside will be closed from January 2 until mid-April for refurbishment. The food court will continue to offer a VERY limited menu for breakfast and dinner and a small number of "grab-and-go" items at lunch during the refurbishment.

Isn't this where we are meeting Friday night?! Is that still a go?

Hi Kristi :wave2: If I wasn't so techno-challenged I'd post the link to the meet thread; but basically there is a poll going to choose a new meet location for Friday night. Last time I checked Pop Century food court was way ahead. Hope to see you there!

Terry - that is so funny. I was typing and realized that i had typed teh wrong side b/c i can't tell L from R. Then i went back to correct it but oops!! I think my left leg is actually the longer one. I have to look down at my hands to see which one the ring is on to tell left from right. That is scary since i like to go out in the wood w/ a map and compass and find my way around!!!!

Okay, that whole exchange had me :rotfl2: :lmao: :rotfl: so hard that I couldn't even read it to Howard. And my poor furbaby, Cali, came over to see why I was laughing so hysterically hard that I was hiccupping!

Howard says "hi" and he misses all of you and he's more than a little jealous that I am haning out with the Evil Running Queen, Iceman, Nippleman, Mr. Pirate Extraordinaire pirate: , SuperStrengthNoseHairMan, etc. and having all this fun without him.

I don't know, Melissa, I think we may have to come up with a nickname for you, sweetie! What was that Carrie said earlier about saying silly things. How fun! :cloud9:

Oh, and Howard says I should post our 5K times:
Howard -- 25:15
Andrew -- 28:30
Cam -- 43:45

Hi WISH Team!
I don't have much time, but just had to say OMG! Madness! You are all so out of control!
:rotfl2: :rotfl2: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:
I'm laughing right now and my family think I'm nuts. (I think they already know)

Uh oh, nick names...Was a time I was called the dog catcher here. Haven't rounded up too many pups lately though.

I'm nursing IT band soreness. Haven't motivated since Sunday's 20 miler.

Still have lots more catching up here. Will try

Was trying today to figure out how to work my LR since DH is working nights until forever it seems, and I hate imposing on dsis every weekend to watch the kids. SO tonight, I had this brilliant idea--after putting the kids to bed I was going to try to do my 14miler on the TM. :lmao: I bow down to those that do LR/LW consistently on the TM! :worship: I made it 12miles in 2:13. Now I feel like I'm going to die! Oh, and found out tonight that once you reach 99min99sec on my TM it comes to a screeching stop! No gradual slowdown--just stop! That was painful! Now it's off to soak and shower for me--then to collapse in bed!

Stephanie, OUCH!!! We've had a couple team mates who have experienced STMS ( Ssuddened TreadMill Stops) and have lived to tell about it. Hope everything is ok tomorrow!
Cam, Wow!! I WISH I had the right words to convey my thoughts on your 23 miler last weekend. After all you have been through, amazing just isn't enough. Please don't injure yourself now, though!!! Trust the Penguin! Oh, pixiedust: to find your Garmin!
Andrew, CONGRATS on running the 5K!! :woohoo:
AmyBeth, I know this has been a long year, but I'm so glad things are finally coming together to figure out what has been causing the pain. Listen to Mel! Hey, on Jan 7th..there will be no pain!
Colleen and Lily pixiedust: for your IT Band problems!!
Carrie, Pat, Monica, and Kevin, PLEASE be careful in that snow!!

Speaking of snow...did you see the report on the people training for the Antarctica marathon? One guy is spending 8 hours running in a food freezer. Noel Sheridan is the only woman entered. This will be her 7th marathon in 7 months and on 7 continents. Whoa..... :cold:

Kristi- Clean out your PM's I tried to send you a 2nd one & it says your box is full!!

Got to sub today so I'll see you guys later!

Boy I miss a couple of days and all the fun happens. I missed the long run on Saturday but wound up in AK so I will count running around there for 4 hours as my training. The new NEmo show is good by the way.

I did get out last night and did 4.75 miles and felt pretty good afterwards. I was a little stiff at the beginning but it seemed to get better as teh run progressed.

Judy - Sorry to hear about Mist. Hopefully you are still able to get her and the owner will wise up.

Bill

How could we forget the Dog Catcher????

Anne - lol about Antarctiva. Now I'm thinking Cool Runnings. I will curse you all day until that darn song gets out of my head! ;) You people say, you know they can't believe. Jamaica's got a bobsled team. (not quite right but the music's in my head)

Amy - I am soooo sorry. :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug: You have the base and can do it. I think PT and yoga will keep your muscles in shape. Now, you just have to heal. :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: :wizard:

Krista - How ar you doing?

Stephanie - Thanks for teh warning. As someone who could end up on a TM for LRs, who is a big TM novice, I appreciate that tip! Yikes. I can just see myself getting all healed and killing myself when the tm stopped.

Well, I did 1 min on teh TM and it hurt. So, I switched to teh eliptical and was ok. The progran changed and it hurt, though, and I could not figure out how to set it so that it felt good again. SO, 20 minutes on eliptical. FInished my 50 minuters on the bike. Boy do I have a lot to learn about gym equipment. I'm hurting today, but have to clean the house tonight. That will be XT as I clean out the upstairs bedroom. Sad that I'll likely have to ice after house cleaning.

Carrie -- Just a warning. At our gym the TM stops at 60:00. Actually, it doesn't stop. It abruptly slows to a crawl. 2.8 mph, I think for a 5 minute cool down.

Okay, so we're adding the dogcatcher to our merry gang. :dog: Love you, Lily! :cloud9:

Hi Everyone-

oo, Things are going wild here! I didn't hear the dog catcher story though. That I need to hear. I was once attacked by a mob of dogs on a run but it was the little dachsund that actually bit me. I have had no end of teasing about being bit on the thigh by a dachsund (I'm 5'7" - he jumped) Now, when I run alone, I carry pepper spray.

Iceman was my favorite charactor in Topgun. There is something about the way he chewed that ice..... And will I ever be able to look at Dave and not imagine a batman suit? lol.

Well I ran in my new shoes (Brooks again) and my new Super Feet insoles. The guy at Fleet feet was really pushing the Super Feet for there greater stability and cushioning. I am a pushover for anything with the word cushion in it. Well, I couldn't even feel the road. I am not sure this is a good thing. Nice for the knees but I think my stride was slightly off.
I am going back to my old shoes for my mid week run and will try the new ones again tomorrow.

I have decided to stick with just powerade for my long runs. I did alot of research and the majority of articles say that liquids are all you need DURING the run. Actually, I was surprised at how many advised against using gels/fuels and powerade/gatorade at the same time. I just want to stick with what works for me.

Happy Trails Everyone!

Good morning TEAM!!!!! :sunny: :sunny: :sunny: I called my Mom this morning at 8:00 and told her she'll be running one month from today! I'm feeling pretty good today (thanks for asking Carrie), I ran last night for the first time since Saturday. I took it verrry easy, doing r3/w2 running at 10:54 and walking at 13:05--ave 12.07 miles, basically 2 minutes per mile slower than what I had been doing, but I think it helped. I did 3.5 miles (I couldn't decide if I should 3 or 4 miles :teeth: ) and I was basically okay. I had a little pain up in my quad, but it never worked it's way down to my knee, digging out my ITBS band probably helped with that. I may have to run the marathon a little slower than I hoped and I may not be able to do 5/1 like I planned, but I'm still going to be able to run the marathon and that make me want to :dancer: :dancer: :dancer: !

Amy--. I am so sorry. But you have an amazing base built up and I think you will do just fine in the marathon. Just keep up with your cross training for the next month and I really think you will be good to go. I read in Runners World a few months ago that some guy got hurt while training for a marathon and ended up doing all of his training on an elliptical machine. Not only did he finish his marathon, but he had a PR. It's completely possible to run a marathon when you can only cross train, once you have a solid base. I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

MelR-- :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: I would be a mess; I don't run with any jewelry on!!!!!

Andrew--Congrats on RUNNING your 5K!!!! Great job!!

Anne--I saw that article in Runners World. All I can say is

Carrie--I hear ya about housework being cross training. Between the marathon, Christmas, work, and day-to-day living, I've been neglecting my house. One of these days I'm going to have to pay the price though.

Colleen--Good luck on your half marathon!!!!!!

Tiff-- :wizard: :wizard: for your tendonitis.

What craziness are we going to get into today???????? popcorn::

Cecilia, where did you buy the pepper spray? Is it a canister? How large?

My friends keep telling me they worry when I run alone, especially at 5 a.m. I think I should buy some!

 Krista - Good to hear!!! Yeah, my parents are comning this weekend...OPlus, if I don't get things pickedf up soon, there'll eb no room for Christmas decorations.

Cecelia - Last year, there was a lot of talk about the "Big Dogs" here. Then, when someone went missing, Lily would track them down and bring them back. Therefore, she was the Dog Catcher. DOi what you're comfortable with as far as food during the race. I have heard that you should not mix, although I ted to do it some, especially near the end. If my sugar drops too low, though, I might as well call it quits right there.

I am glad you have decided what to do with the eating/drinking. THis is something everyone has to decide for themselves......

Just an interesting fact I discovered.....You all may just go Duh, we already knew this, but here it goes.....
I tallied up my calories that I burn during an 18 mile LR (takes me about 2:40 and I am 113 lbs), I burn over 1500 cals during this amount of time....if you weight over 113, you would burn even more calories....DUDE! NOW THAT IS why I am hungry all the time! I need to tally my cal for the week b/c I do 30+ miles in a week...not including any weight training or xtraining.

Wow miss a couple of days and boom 7 more pages.

Cruella - I was told black toe is the result of your toe punding against your shoe, solution you need different shoes. I changed to Asics and no more black toe. Each runners feet are different so find what works.

Aladdin - great article, I loved they had advice for 1st timers. I am so nervous I think I may lose it on the plane down.

Ok question about gels - sorry if this has been answered already.

Are there any that are better sugar wise? My body does not tolerate sugar well. I tried the beans but the do not seem to give me any extra boost.

Cecelia - I KNOW my exercise physiologist agrees with people here, you need to replenish during a full. That is why they make it available. Your body will eat your stores and when they are gone it goes for muscle for energy. Hence faster fatigue. Also with so much liquid you need to watch for hyponetremia(sic), which can be worse than dehydration.

OK...All this talk about gels and drinking during a marathon has got me interested in what to do so I did some research....I am not very web savy so I couldn't find many articals that were any good but here is one that I thought was interesting.....
drinking/eating and running
I cannot do the poweraid/gatoraid b/c of my acid reflux so I just do H2O so this was interesting.

Good morning Team. :sunny:

Guess I don't have to remind anyone what day today is.

:scared:

Today was a rest day for me. So nothing to report.

OMG! :lmao: You guys with the nicknames!!! Don't you feel sorry for the other people on the DIS who don't wander over to the Events forum. Look at all the entertainment they are missing! :rotfl:

Have we heard from Helen? :confused3

Stephanie
- I have been on the TM when the power went out in a storm. It wasn't pretty.

Pat - I so totally hear you! :thumbsup2 Charlie has four kids and inevitably one of them is always sick during the winter. I've taken to following behind them with Lysol wipes. OK, not so they can see me or anything. That would be mean. But I hear you about being paranoid. I'd rather think of it as being smart, though.

Oh Amy - I don't even know what to say.

OK Melissa - I'm still trying to figure out just exactly how many legs DO you have anyway??? :lmao:

Carrie - Oh I LOVE that movie! Cool Runnings has some great music!

Christa - Oh thanks! I was looking for a reason why I was always hungry. popcorn:: Seriously, on Saturdays I become like an eating machine!

I read last night that you are supposed to "sip" gels. Oh shoot, I didn't know that! I was doing them like shots! :bitelip:

Christa - I loved this article! I am another who does not tolerate spotrs drinks well. I tend to stick to water or Propel. This means I have to cary my own, not hard on a 1/2 but for the full I would need a cooler.

Stephanie - LOL!! I feel your pain, and btw never close your eyes and listen to the beat of your iPod. The beat does not match the TM and you look really graceful as you skid off at 11:07.
