Wk of Dec 17--WISH Walking/Running Club

Mark - SOUnds like you are using a great plan and making great progress! We tent to use swogging for jogging in the water and wogging for walk/jog. NO biggie, just want to get you on the same page so you don't get confused. I started using teh TM for teh first time this winter. I am with you on hating them compared to outside!! They do beat snow, ice, wind and 20 degree weather, though. :D

Mel - I don't know if the northerners could take another 35 degree start this year either! We've been spoiled!

Vic -- I swear I didn't give it to you, even though I have the same now. I had to wait a week for my cold to progress to this lousy state. How long have you been sick?

After my 8 mile run a week ago Sunday I was completely tuckered out and I felt that way most of the week, and I had a slight tightness in my chest, and an intermittent cough. But, as the week went on I felt better and better, and by Saturday I felt normal.

My run on Sunday was fine and I felt fine afterwards. Get up yesterday and the tightness was back in my chest and I had the cough. I feel fine, but it's annoying.

I called the doctor's office yesterday and spoke with the nurse. She was supposed to talk with the doc and call me back. Never heard anything. So I stopped in this morning. I'm still waiting for her to call me. What a racket.

I'm not a good sick person. My DW can attest to that. :rotfl:

I hope you get to feeling better soon. :)

Carrie - hehehe

I certainly hope I don't get sick between now and January 5th. If I come up missing, drain the pond in front of Stephen's work!!!

:rotfl: Krista, let's hope you stay healthy! :thumbsup2

Welcome Mark!! Yeah, like everyone else said, stick around! You are up to 8 miles already, I say you can certainly do the marathon next year!! Stick around and we will help get you there!

Vic, Cecilia, not you two too! PD to you two and everyone else sick. Better now than in 2 1/2 weeks!

Tiff, you are going to Disney in 10 days??? That is just around the corner. Yikes, I am getting a little scared!

Mel, I am with you on that one, just want to do this thing (not to get it over with because I know it will be a great time) but it just seems like I have been in training forever! :faint:

We are flying up to Canada for Christmas, so I will be a little out of touch for the next 8 days. Don't let the taper madness get to you. Remember we are as trained as we are going to get! Let the body rest, we deserve it!

Happy Holidays everyone! :grouphug:

Hi all,

Oh Sunny, I've been sending those prayers and PD your way.

You too all my WISH Team family.

I'm thinking you are all going to be over it by the time we step off. Do what you can to stay well and don't worry about the running just now.

Mark, don't lurk. Come play! We've got lots of room and would love that you are here.

Judy! Oh Yesssss! I am so thrilled for you. I like the idea of a pic with a big bow and Santa hat! I do love that pic you have of Mist girl for us to enjoy too.

Howard, I'm worring for you too. Don't overtrain please. We need you in one piece here.

I've been trying to get a post in and it has been wicked busy today, with more to come. Hang in there everyone.

I played taper last night. I did some Christmas cards and ate one, yup--only one--cookie DH made. (It was one I don't like much and I thanked him for making them since I was so not tempted to eat all of them.)

Not sure what I'm with tonight. I will see maybe tonight will be a good gym night.

The flu or something icky like it is certainly going around. Hoping everyone is feeling better soon! I'm taking my Airborne so hoping not to catch something over the holidays, although it will be the first year that I didn't. :worried:

This morning I pulled myself out of bed at 5am, got dressed and then ran around the block once before deciding that it was too bloody cold to run outside (even with an extra layer of clothes). It was 27 degrees F here in San Jose, California this morning and my blood *must* be getting thin. I'm an expatriate Canadian and I feel ashamed that I couldn't handle it. I headed to the gym instead.

I've always found it easier to run outside than on a treadmill, but I managed to run/walk 10 miles in about 2:20.

For some reason, I don't think that I run as fast on a treadmill as I do outside. My heart rate is certainly up there though (about where it is normally on my LR). Perhaps it's just calibration? My Nike+ says that I actually ran 11.1 miles. I took the conservative path, and trusted the treadmill, just to be safe since this was my longest run before the 1/2.

This is my first time at all of this, so I don't know what to expect now in terms of the run up to the race. So far I haven't had any injuries (*knock on wood*) although my knees are a bit sore after today's run. I took a couple of ibuprofen.

Best of luck to everyone in getting in their final LR and starting to taper.

Cheers!

Chris

nym,
I see where you use the Nike + thingamajingy, how do you like it? I bought it for myself from my kids for Christmas, so I can't technically play with it until next Monday. The shoes that I ended up with are kinda funky looking, I'm hoping that the transmitter thing will work with my normal shoes instead. I've seen some people tie them to their laces or use a lace wallet thing to secure it on top of the shoe.

Mark

Are you talking about the championchip?

They make shoes with one????

Well heck learn something new all the time!

An electrical tie would work just as well--the plastic things that are sometimes used to hold wires together--looks like a permanent garbage tie.

At Disney they give you a skinny one that is really good but then pops right off with a pair of clippers or scissors.

Those that are sick---I am sooo sorry you aren't feeling well or might get the cooties.

As much as it sucks now---as one who had to do the full with the flu.....now is better than race day. For those who haven't caught it yet---I hope that it stays far far far away from you!

Hey everyone! :wave2: I just wanted to pop in and thank you all for the well wishes. I had a good doctor appt today - the baby is good, and I am on antibiotics. Hopefully I will be breathing and feeling normal in a few days - yea! I have tried my hardest to share my germs with Bill over the last couple of weeks, but he has resisted my charms... :rolleyes1 Just kidding honey!!! :teeth:

Also, I had to say YEA to Judy for getting Mist!!!! I am so thrilled for you!!!! :goodvibes I got all teary reading your update! What a wonderful Christmas blessing!!!!

Sunny - tons of :grouphug: and :wizard: !!! I really hope you are better soon! I am so sorry for all you have had to deal with lately!

More :wizard: and pixiedust: for all the sickies!!! I can't help much with the injuries, but for you who are dealing with respiratory stuff... I was sick both of the last two years. My doctor told me not to run the races - definitely not an option!!! He finally relented and said that if it wasn't in my chest (not coughing up stuff), I could run. He suggested using Neosynephrine (sp??) once on race morning. He said it is addictive, and I would feel worse after it wore off, but it would get me through the race. He was right! :thumbsup2 I am not a doctor, so please double check with yours before trying this. Just an idea for anyone in the same situation...

Happy tapering to everyone!!! I really do miss training with you all! (Wow, I never thought I would miss long runs.... :faint: shock!) I will be cheering extra loud for you all, though! :thumbsup2 See you SOOOOOOON!!!

Mark - the NIKE+ sensor can be used with any pair of shoes. Marware sells a neopreme pouch that attachs it to your shoelaces and helps keep it out of the elements. I calibrated mine while walking last weekend. Over 5 miles it registered 5.03. I'm not sure if it was the NIKE+ or the state park systems mile markers that were off. My daughter has one also and hers always seems to register high, even on the TM. I think it all comes down to calibration.

To everyone who is sick, get well soon. Maybe taper will help get over what ails everyone sooner.

The boss came into work today sick. He thinks he is too busy to stay home an rest. We actually got worried when he hadn't shown up by 10:30 when he is normally there by 8:30. i plan to stay away from him as much as possible.

I am still hitting the TM and walking outside when possible. I get bored thinking about the TM as I am not training for anything. It is easier to walk on weekends while Lynne is doing her runs as it gets me out.

PT is going OK. I still have not gained full range of motion back. The therapist said he wants me to have full range when I start back in January after the WDW trip.

Judy - congrats on getting Mist. She will be much happier and healthier under your ownership.

Everyone have a great holiday and get healthy. Will see everyone before the race. I will be cheering for everyone on both days.

Sorry Lily...I had to read this a couple times before I caught onto the part about the cookie ;) Thought maybe TAPER MADNESS had hit you really hard

Hi Kathy,

Good to hear from you! I am glad the PT is helping! Hope full range of motion comes back quickly. How is Lynne training coming along? She is going Goofy, correct?

Lynnda, Hi to you too!

Good to hear baby is doing well! :cloud9: Take care of yourself, I can't believe you only have 14 weeks left! Wow, time really flies!

Yes, Lily, tell us about eating the Christmas cards! :rotfl:

Colleen

Lynnda - :wave2:

Ok, what's that saying about best-laid plans...? Instead of going to the Y as planned...I went to bed. I woke up at 6:38 in a panic (needed to pick up a script before the pharmacy closed at 7). So, seeing I decided to nap in my new jammies that came via UPS today - I stayed in them!

So, my xt will consist of finishing a cross stitich towel to get in the mail to my grandparents & starting to make the hot chocolate cone things for everyone's Christmas stockings. Oy!

Hang in there my tapering fools!

Mark- as Mom said, the issue w/ the Nike+ unit for the Nano is calibration. It was registering consistently high(23.8 mi for my 20 a couple weeks ago- I wish) in spite of my attempts to calibrate it before we got the new Marware cases. Now it's reading consistently low. I haven't recalibrated it again though.

Training for Goofy- um, okay. I haven't bothered doing any back to back LRs and did three 16 milers plus a 20 miler rather than the planned 16, 18, 20, 22. Somewhat in my defense though, I have been doing a bike focus winter maintenance program for triathlon so last weekend consisted of 3.5 hours on the bike plus a 2 mile transistion run on Sat and then 16 mi LR plus another 1.5 hrs on the bike on Sun. Since my goal is to PR the half and just do whatever for the full to get the Goofy, I'm not really too concerned. I've got the fitness to run a half hard and the endurance to run a full fatigued.

Judy- congrats on getting Mist.

Sickies- mucho pixie dust.

Just as a note of encouragment. I went back to school on Tues last year, was fully sick by Weds, and flew back out for the marathon on Thurs. I couldn't breathe and was hacking up a lung every night including the one before the full. What happened? Well, I have that Mickey medal. My time was dissappointing because I started trying to run like I was healthy, not following my plan w/ the Clif Pace Group, and oh yeah, I had an injury from something stupid I had done 2 weeks before that decided to get so painful I was reduced to walking around mile 16. To fully cap the day off, I got stung by a bee exiting the Animal Kingdom. I had almost 2 hours to spare ahead of the sweeps but I was still dissappointed. So this year has got to go better...BTW, I finally started feeling respiratory healthier on Monday after the race, maybe there is something to sweating it out :thumbsup2

Lisa - From what I gather, teh Nike + is garminesque or perhaps a really good ped?

OMG! Put it to taper madness. :confused3 :rotfl2:

So, I'm sitting here feeling really exhausted after today's stressful day. I am not sure if I have anything left in me to get myself up from here or not. I've determined that I am phobic about going to the gym and sharing air and such with more strangers before the race. I am having great difficulty not putting in steps at the moment.

Kathy, I'm glad your PT is progressing. PD that you will get the range of motion back.

Lynne, sounds like you've got a good plan in place for that Goofy. I'm knowing you will do it for sure.

I gathered that the Nike + is more like the Polar style a mucho sophisticated pedometer since it can be used indoors. What do I know...

The NIKE+ is a super pedometer. There is a pickup unit that attaches to the bottom of the Apple Nano's. The unit talks the the sensor on your shoe and tells you distance, time and pace by pushing the center button. You can also set up a power song which you activate by holding the center button.

Unlike the Garmin, it works under trees and when it is overcast. If you already have a Nano, the sensor and pickup cost $29 at the apple store. It was designed to work with Nike shoes that have part of the sole cut out to hold the sensor.

Since many people either don't like NIKE or can't wear them, third parties have come out with a way of attaching them to any shoe. It is jusst another toy for this free sport.

Mom gave a good explanation about the Nike+ but another element to it is the software/website. When you hook your Nano to the 'puter it downloads the info to your Nike+ account(free). It then keeps a log of your workouts and you can set personal goals(such as running 100 miles in a month) or participate in challenges w/ others. I'm in a couple challenges for December through BeginnerTriathlete- fastest 5K(yeah right), fastest 10K(yeah right), and most miles(currently 2nd).

Off to read some psychiatry- :crazy2: :( :teeth: :drinking1
We have the psychotic, the depressed, the manic, and the substance using smilies- gosh, I dislike this rotation. 3 more days on in patient and then 13 days of out patient. And my classmates lied to me- they said I would have plenty of time to go play in the NICU w/ the tiny ones during psych; no, actually I haven't, not at all. Grrr.

Just wanted to comment on this, not sure which model you're referring to, but I can speak to the Forerunner 205 model, which has worked perfectly under trees, when overcast, in a thunderstorm, on covered trails, and also most of the time even inside my house or garage! Excellent accuracy when translated into the computer onto the satellite maps. Can tell when I crossed to the other side of small roads, or switched back on trails, when set to the "update every second" mode.

Hi everyone... I will be cautious in my training over the next week or two. I will make sure I am in one piece for the half-marathon and after. However, for the Marathon, anything goes.

I didn't run today... I hope to get in at least 5 miles tomorrow after work. Maybe more. I'll post an update if I do.

I am almost over this nasty head cold and feeling better by the hour.

Happy Taper folks!

:grouphug:

Judy - Congrats on being able to keep Mist! Somehow i missed your post and had to go back and find it. I'm so happy for you!

Sunny - I'm so sorry to hear you have pneumonia again. That really stinks. I hope you are feeling better soon.

I'm starting to feel better. Hoping my cold and congestion will be gone by the weekend so i can get in a few short r/w's.

Terri
