Wk Of Dec 1 - WISH Walking/Running Club

:love1:
Judy - I give you condolences on the TM... mine is dying also!!!!! :grouphug:

Thanks Jen but it just CAN NOT die NOW! OMG please! Can you imagine? I don't know what we'd do! Panic, that's for sure!

Kristi - Charlie is on the Red side, so yay he'll be going by our water stop! :cloud9: But I'm the only one allowed to run out and kiss him! :love1:

Mel: We have plenty of snow to share. That is one of the things I missed in my short time living in GA. I LOVE SNOW!! Can't live without it!!!!

No training for me today as I am on a rest day, if you classify cleaning the house and laundry as rest!!

Hope everyone has a great day training. ;)

My 8 year old DD has seen man-made snow (as in blowing ice from a truck- loses something, doesn't it?!) but never the real stuff. She's begging to see real snow! I don't think she'd last 10 minutes...

I ran 5 miles yesterday without the stroller! My Nike+ said I finished in a little over 41 minutes, but I think it's way off (which is why I have a Garmin coming in the mail- Happy early Birthday to me!) I was feeling pretty happy until Harry's little cough turned into something vaguely flu-like. (Did I mention one of the girls at DD's b-day party said she'd thrown up that morning?) So now I have Harry at the office, destroying everything. I did get my flu shot, so maybe I'll survive, but I'm basically just waiting to be sick as a dog in about 12 hours. Which is worse- getting sick out of the blue or just waiting for it to hit?! :scared1::rolleyes1

Oh well, at least it's not right before Disney!

Jen in GA

Hi guys, I have been off the boards for a few days....work has totally taken over. I ran my back to back runs on Thursday and Friday, went to Fit Ball on Monday and that has been it. I probably won't get any runs in during this week at all thanks to work, but I should be back at it Saturday and Sunday.

Dana, tons of hugs and PD for you. I know how much animals mean, so my thoughts are with you.:grouphug:

race etiquette question

if they are offering free massage at the end, should I tip the massuese or not?

Hi Stacie! - I think that is a GREAT idea to talk to Fleet Feet and see if they can help you out with the sneaker issue. It may be a simple fix and wow wouldn't that make a big difference for those runs!!! Way to go on the XT girl! Keep it up...you're going to do awesome in WDW at the 5K. :thumbsup2

Treadmill Runners: :worship: I have NO CLUE how you guys do it. I wasn't meant for the treadie. I opted for the 20 plus MPH winds and 20 degree temps yesterday. Walked out of my pilates class and stared down the row of 10 treadmills. Stared out the window and saw the trees whipping....stared at the treadmills....drove home and hit the road. Then hit the trail. Then ran away from the hunters :scared1: . Managed to NOT spit into my neck warmer this time:thumbsup2 (don't ask). And managed a decent pace pushing up against the winds. Unfortunately the hunters sort of blocked my way...and although I'm a pretty unflappable runner....I decided not to chance death or at least a nasty gunshot wound...and only got 5 out of my scheduled 6 miles. :confused3

Today I'm planning on doing some pilates on my own and hit the ski-machine for 40 minutes. Somebody please kick my butt to get my cardio XT in. I'm such the slacker! Missed 2 hours last month of the additional cardio ...hate machines. Can't wait for that biking weather again! :rolleyes1 .

Jen, congrats on the Garmin. I was constantly recalibrating my Nike+ and I would think it was right, but then I got the Garmin and it was always way off. I kept up with both for awhile, but finally just quit using the Nike+. It was really off so I felt like there was no point. :confused3

DH played me some really funny Nike+ video spoof the other day. I'll have to ask him for the link. It really cracked me up. If you've used it before you would find it very funny!

EDIT - here's the link...

Hey guys!
Drive by b/4 next client.....LTO for me this week. I am trying to get ready for 6 shows this weekend....
It always seems that my real life activities get in the way of my running goals...my week is just so busy and no time to rest up so my plan is just to go out and leave it on the race course. I will do my best.

Dana - So sorry! I WISH I had the words to help you feel better.

Jen Ga - I was passed by a guy pushing a stroller with 3 children in it! It had started to thunder and he started booking it!

Hey Bree!:yay: You will do GREAT this weekend.....hey JIC I don't see you, Jeff may run the 2nd 1/2 with me.:thumbsup2 He is WAY FAST! Hope I can keep up.

I only had to run 2 miles today and I was in pain. After I got home I saw I had an average pace of 10:09, which is very fast for me. I guess I was trying too hard. I need to watch my Garmin more. Tomorrow I'm gonna run 4 miles so I hope I feel stronger. My first half marathon training starts in just a week and a half! :scared:

:love1: Kristi - Charlie is on the Red side, so yay he'll be going by our water stop! :cloud9: But I'm the only one allowed to run out and kiss him! :love1:
Darn it! Chad's blue, so who am I going to kiss then?
I doubt Johnny Goo is running! :rotfl:
I told Chad he could hang back in another corral and he looked at me like I was nuts.

I swear the exercise gods have it in for me!
Just now, took a short nap, then got up & immediately into my work out clothes.
Zack has his gym class and I can do 3 miles while he is in class.
Turns out Zack doesn't want to wake up from his nap (and since I also have these issues, I understand).
I finally get him up, out the door, into the car & off we go.
About 1/4 mile from home, he starts with the "i have to pee" business.
Didn't have to go when we were home, now he's bouncing around like a maniac in his booster seat.
So, back home we go.
And no class for us since we were already running a little late. :sad2:

I am just so aggravated right now! :scared:
(ok, vent over...)

Amy - HA HA HA - the other week I was racking my brain to remember who it was that spit into their neck warmer!!!! I am so glad you fessed up again so I can cross that off my "figure it out" list. Last month I ran in the coldest windiest weather, and had to spit and that is what made me think of it!

Ok, back to work again!

Hi! I don't know if I'm in the right place but I'm thinking of running the Disneyland Half Marathon in 2008. I have never run anything in my life but since Labor Day I have started an exercise routine and started eating right and have lost 12 pounds. I think if I start training now then this could become a reality and not just a dream. I guess what I want is to chat with people who have run the Disneyland (or World) Half Marathon and to see how it went. I would also like to get to know people who will be running the 2008 Disneyland Half Marathon.

Hey Vic, maybe if ya'll met at a Motel 6 vs. the Gaylord Palms there would be a bit more money to fund with . Are you going to get to see Mickey while you're in town?

This is a government operation. Spend it before you lose it. :rolleyes1

No Mickey this go around, but the DW and I are supposed to spend next weekend with the mouse. :)

OK. Just to update, things have been getting a little better with the back, but I am still having problems with it. As a result, most of my training since late October has been strength training and cardio on a recumbant bike or eliptical machine. Given that the half marathon is in a little over five weeks and I don't even have a walking base to rely upon, I have decided to abandon attempting the half in 2008 so as not to risk further or new injuries (and to help out the EMTs as if I were to pass out, it would probably take most of them to move me and that would prevent them from giving their undivided attention to the Queen ;) ).

I do plan to continue trying to get and stay healthy though and to participate in half and full marathons in the future, including WDW in 2009 (Goofy?). Its just taking my body longer to adjust/correct itself than I hoped. I'll still be here to keep you all honest and to keep Penguin-Pal Packet-Deprived Pussin' Panda in line though. I greatly appreciate all the encouragement and support the WISH team has extended me thus far and I will see you guys at start and finish lines somewhere in the near future.

Good news and bad from the podiatrist today. My ankle that gave me so much trouble after 16 and 18 miles is afflicted with a tarsal coalition, possibly something I was born with (explains why it's been a problem since middle school). He said that I shouldn't be able to run half marathons (or fulls) at all. Basically one of the joints has no space, it's just bone on bone and there's something, either bone or soft tissue, that's tethering the two bones together which gives me somewhat limited range of motion in that foot. He recommended ibuprofen an hour before a run, heat and ice afterward. Worst case, down the road, arthritis and surgery to release the tethered parts. Right now, he's not recommending anything specific since I'm already doing more than I should be able to. He said the mileage I'm hitting now may just be the limit of what I'm going to be able to do with this ankle. He did add an extra cushion layer on my orthotics to help.

Weird thing is, when I saw his partner in Jan 2005, nothing was mentioned. I'm kinda glad it either wasn't picked up or was ignored. That visit was the one I made when I started training for my first WDW half...if they had told me then that I shouldn't (or wouldn't) be able to do the half, I might have believed them and given up before I ever got started. While I wanted to know what has been wrong with my ankle, I'm not sure what to do with the information. Do I skip the 22 miler or do I keep it in the mix to build up to the 26.2 more slowly? I guess I'm kinda down about the whole idea...I was really hoping for some kind of soft tissue injury that I could rehab, not something that's likely to get worse over time.

Bill...sorry to hear you won't be doing the half this year, but avoiding future injury is always a good idea. Could we still convince you to come hangout with the team?

Vic...I've been meaning to mention to you...is the foot pain you're having on the bottoms of your feet? I had that really bad this year, especially after the WDW half. My feet felt so tender that I could hardly walk on them. It's gotten a LOT better since I got new cushioned shoes (switched from Saucony back to ASICs).

Kristi...your day reminded me of last year when we went out and got a fancy jogging stroller. I tried taking the WT out, but with the constant stopping to retrieve lost toys, stopping for a drink, needing to go potty about 10 min after leaving, whining about going home, etc...I only used it a couple times.

Bree!...great to see you back!

Thanks for all the snow advice. Looks like it will be a bit too far to drive to see snow so we'll have to find something else exciting to do.

Welcome to the WISH Team! We are glad to have you here. Congratulations on getting involved with this activitiy. You will find many friends here and lots of information and help. Join in often.

NEPats Bill, I am so sorry to hear of your news. I do WISH as Mel said that maybe you are still able to come in January? That would be such fun to get to visit with you. We could sure use you to cheer us along to.

Mel, oh no! I don't know how to react to the info the doc gave. Maybe just keep running, running, running. I am glad that it was not offered to you in the beginning too. I would never have had the chance go get to meet and know a wonderful person.

Shan, I loved that Nike+ spoof!

Kristi, sorry about your missed w/o hope you had some good time after all with DS.

I'd tip the massuese. I see that other event participants offer tips at the free massage offerings.

I've only gone back a little so I don't know what everyone else is doing this week. I managed a decent gym w/o and yup even on that dreaded TM. I've got an appointment tomorrow at our local surgery center for an endoscopy with dilitation, third time the charm I'm WISHing. It looks like I will be doing my LRs 9/18 on the TM this weekend. I may be WISHing for a meltdown and may see about running on the roads in the developments around here if I feel safe, i.e. no ice. Lots of snow and I just know it won't melt before the weekend. Sigh. I guess it's pack a picnic, and movies, and books, and magazines, and ipods and...

Good morning WISH team. Here is my attempt to keep up on this thread!

Amy: I am with you, outside is where it is at. I only use the TM for shorter runs under 5 miles. I do use the elliptical and the bike on XT cardio days though. I skate or race ski during the winter months to keep up my cardio and it is great for the butt. We joke about the song with the butt big enough to set a cup on her booty. Yep, that's us skiers! I run during hunting season too. Look like a little orange streak!! Oh, and I have spit in my neck warmer before too so don't feel alone.

Jen: I found my Nike+ to be off no matter how many times I calibrated it. The distance that I knew was 1 mile was only about .75 on the Nike+ so I abandoned it and bought a Garmin. It was the best thing I ever did for my workouts.

Motoxprincess and Bree: :welcome: (I have to welcome Bree cuz I have not met her yet!!)

NEBill: Sorry to hear you have to abandon ship. I hope you do stay well during 2008 and will join us for Goofy 09. I can't wait!!!!

I am on for a 40 minute run which will be an all out ski-for-all for me. The Garmin has been awesome as for the first time in 15 years, I can track the mileage that I do on the trails. We estimate that we have 15 miles total of trails but I guess that will have to be checked!!

Speed of healing to anyone sick/injured and have a great day everyone!!!!!!!!!

I've got an appointment tomorrow at our local surgery center for an endoscopy with dilitation, third time the charm I'm WISHing.
I thought I was the only one who got to do this kind of fun stuff all the time? ;)
Actually, I haven't had an endoscopy or dilitation in a couple years (knock on wood).
I hope things go well for you today, Lily!

I have 4 miles planned for today. I am hoping I can get them done before I pick Zack up at school. I am not chancing him messing me up today! :rotfl:

Totally OT - remember my niece Molly & her sneaker idea from American Inventor? Well, they got a call from the head of Puma in Germany this week! He is very interested in Molly's idea and wants to meet with them when he comes to Boston in a few weeks. He said he was planning the fall line now and wanted to pursue this idea. Please keep your fingers crossed for Miss Molly!

mel- Sorry to hear your drs report. It's encouraging and inspiring to see you pushing through it all to reach your goal.

amy & Lisa - I am totally with you on running outside. I HATE the DREADMILL. I have had to do most of my short runs at the Y so I'd have child watch for Lucas. I try to run really fast so I can get it over with and off the TM.....actually that may have been a good thing ;)

Cam - Yes I plan on meeting up with you guys at some point over race weekend. I need to show off my littlest W.I.S.H.team member don't I?

Taking it easy this week since I have a race Saturday. I ran a "hard" short run Monday, and have opted to do nothing the rest of the week. This game plan has worked for me in the past. If it doesn't work this time around I'll know better the week of the disney race. Bought all my gu (I call it flavored snot) for the race yesterday, and have basically planned what I'm wearing. They are calling for a high of 64 Saturday. Warmer than usual for
december but I can't say I'm upset about that. For me that means, less layers, and less sweaty clothing up against me. Im still way nervous, but I guess I can't be any more trained than I am, so I'll just go out there and do the best i can do for that day.

until later,
~bree~
