Wk of Aug 6--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

Pungodingy -- Welcome and good luck with your training. Hope we can answer any questions you have.

Lily -- Great news!!! Glad you can make it this year.

Sara -- have a good trip and enjoy yourself.

Dave -- Good luck with the race tonight. Hope you are able to get the swingset up soon.

Krista -- Good job on the run last night. I hope that your leg gets better soon. I seem to be having the same problem with one of my legs. It is getting better but way too slowly for my taste.

Kristi -- playing hooky from work is the best time to wog. :cool1: Unless of course you meet your boss on the trail... :rolleyes1

Colleen -- I am usually too tired at 4:45 to really notice how fast I am going. Although the strange noises that I hear usually get me to go faster. I am sure that a gator is going to jump out and get me at some point so I try to get past all the drainage canals quickly. I agree it is nice to be finished before the sun comes out and heats everything up.

Howard -- Good job on the run and helping out with the cross country team. Just make sure they don't get you lost instead. ;)

Denny -- It is generally not wise to increase more than 10% a week so it is better to take it easy than risk getting hurt. Make sure you listen to your body and what it is telling you.

Christa -- Good luck on your run tomorrow. Enjoy those drinks.

Kevin -- Hope you get over your cold soon. Have fun with your Garmin again although mine spoils me too much.

Jen -- Don't worry too much about blisters. If your shoes and socks fit right then the chances of getting them are small. Lynnda (DW) hasn't gotten any yet and she has definitely tried.

goofyguy -- Have fun on your trip. Good luck with all the flights.

I took it easy yesterday and just went for a walk tonight. I think I isolated my leg pain to when I almost cramped during a long run a couple of weeks ago. I figure I need to rest it and it does seem to be feeling better. I may just do walks for the rest of the week to keep things loose.

Now, I’ve got great news. (It doesn’t have anything about saving a lot of money on my car insurance.) We saved money on our airline ticket for October after I noticed that horrible price we paid to get there finally came down to “normal.” We called last night and made adjustments and now have air tickets for January AND a place to stay! We (DH and I) are going. I am gonna be at the start with all my WISH Team!

Absolutely awesome news Lily!! :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2:

Hello Jen

Blisters are caused by heat, created by friction while you run. Anything which increases the easy slipping and sliding of sock, shoe and foot reduces the friction and blisters.

Putting vaseline over the white athletic tape allows the sock, or socks in my case, so slip over the hot spot. Then vaseline on the hot spot of the sock and the shoe does the same thing.

I usually don't bother with it in shorter runs, but when I get longer I try to do this to reduce the chance of blisters. For marathon day I even slip some of the vaseline between my toes. Not a lot, but I'm so fearful that at mile 18 I'll develop a blister someplace and perhaps DNF.

Take care

Craig

Lily – I am so psyched to know you are joining us in January! WOW! Now it feels like a real WISH event! Do you know how much you inspire me? Tonight when I wanted to bail on my LW, I kept remembering you saying I have to put in the steps. I am so glad that the WISH team leader will be with us!

Christa – Be sure to give Bree a hug for me! Tell her I am so happy she is doing well.

I did my 8 mile LW tonight since I wasn’t sure I’d be able to get it in on Saturday at my aunt’s house. I almost totally bailed during the 5th mile because I started having charliehorses in my right calf and I had that very bad pain again on the top of my right foot on the left side. I have no idea what that is, but I think I am going to take a cool bath (I already took some advil). Here are my splits:
Mile 1 – 13:34
Mile 2—14:08
Mile 3 – 13:52
Mile 4 – 13:44
Mile 5 – 14:18
Mile 6 – 14:28
Mile 7 – 15:18
Mile 8 – 14:53
The avg pace for my first 4 miles (before a potty break) was 13:49. The pace for the last 4 miles was 14:44. Overall pace 14:17.
Oh, and I am so excited to report that I actually ran for 2 minutes at a stretch at least 4 times (all during the first 4 miles) and it wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. Kind of exhilarating to be able to do that. Someday, I'll be able to run a mile! :cool1:

Hi! :grouphug:

Christa~ Thanks for the note. I am not all that, trust me. Not amazing, just doing what I can.

Karen ~ I managed not to get lost, none of the boys did either. :cool1:

Lily ~ Glad to hear you'll be joining us! :cheer2: :thumbsup2

I ran a total of 2.38 miles with the St. Edmond's Academy Cross Country Team (www.stedmondsacademy.org) tonight. I then surprised Cam at the YMCA. (She didn't expect to see me there). I cross-trained for 3.1 miles, upright biked for 3.1 miles and lifed weights for about 20 minutes. All in all, I earned my sleep tonight. :cloud9:

I might take a break tomorrow, I guess it'll depend on the weather. I might try to get a LR in at the State Park.

Have a most excellent night and day tomorrow.

Howard

Good Morning Team: :surfweb:

X-country race was last night. I got lost again, and my Garmin lost my signal in the woods. I think I did about ~3 miles in 33:21 min. I was doing pretty much a jog10/walk1 pace. My first mile was around 9:20 min. I also used the advice here for the blisters on my feet and applied new skin, bandaids, white athletic tape, and had no problems whatsoever. My goal now in this Thursday night x-country series is to complete the entire course without getting lost. We'll see... 2 more weeks. The princesses princess: princess: did the 1/4 mile race and did great. They were tired by the end of it though. Afterwards, we all went to Bennigan's for dinner to celebrate.

OH, I almost forgot! I wore my WISH racing team tank top for the first time. No problem with the princesses finding me during the race. I passed a woman during the race who said she was reading the back of my shirt and really liked it. :thumbsup2

Lily- That's fantastic news!!! I'm so glad you are going to be at the races in January. I'm waiting for Southwest to extend their calendar to get my flights. I love your team uniform pictures!

Kevin- Good luck getting over your cold. Glad you got your Garmin back!

Karen- I hope your 4 miler went well, and have fun with your 5k this weekend.

Pat- Have fun with the Chicago Distance Classic this weekend!

Kristi- I hope things work out with your toenail.

Mike- Have fun at WDW!!!

Monte- You are really doing great with your training. WTG! :thumbsup2

Cam- Fantastic job on your LW!!! That is super! That is so exciting you're mixing in the running too. WTG!!!

Howard- Good job to you too, running with the x-country team, cross training, meeting Cam. WTG!!!

OK, off to do my leg exercises. I'm back to the pool for a SWOG tonight to let my legs recover from the run outside yesterday. I think I may try to run 3 miles on the roads on Saturday.

Good morning everyone. :sunny:

No training news to report from me. Had a horrible night's sleep and couldn't pull myself out of bed this morning. It won't be too hot after work this afternoon, so maybe I'll squeeze in my 5 miles before dinner.

Good news - Matt came home from the hospital yesterday. It will be a long, slow road back to normal. But, we're thanking God and the heavens that he's out of danger.

This will be my last post for at least a week. Check out my counter. We leave for WDW on Saturday morning. It doesn't even bother me to arrive at BWI before 5:00 am for a 7:50 flight. Because...WE'RE GOING TO DISNEY WORLD!

 :cool1: :sunny: :cheer2: :Pinkbounc :lovestruc :bounce:

Kelley -- Have a great time! I am so excited for you. Please give ::MickeyMo a hug and kiss for me. (see my tag! :teeth: )

Dave - So glad your xt run went well, even if you got misplaced! ;)

I won't be around this weekend. We are headed to New England to visit my aunt and uncle and I am really looking forward to seeing them. I am hoping to get in last night's scheduled 50 minute walk tomorrow morning with my aunt (who walks really, really fast!). They live just blocks from the beach so she and I will do a huge circuit, part of which goes along the beach. Should be a glorious morning!

Have fun everyone! We leave for DL 5 weeks from today and then I get to really start focusing on WDW and seeing our whole WISH team there! :grouphug: :thumbsup2 :goodvibes: :cool1:

5 weeks!? :scared1: I better get a bunch of things on eBay soon, or I won't have any money for DL! ;)

Have a great time in my neck of the woods, Cam. It's supposed to be a beautiful weekend.

Kelley - have a fabulous trip! Great news about Matt!

Back from LR! It was wonderful. I ran with some buddies from the CMPD and we ave a 9 something MPM. So the pace was really good for me...not hard at all! Was not so hot and Bree got us COLD gatorade! :thumbsup2 I got a pic of her...she is 7 months preg!
PregBree.jpg

Doesn't she look so cute!?! She is bummed that she cannot run WDW this year...I told her she is working on something much more important right now...Her goal is for us to do Goofy 08!

Kelley - Have a wonderful time on your trip!

Howard - I don't care what you say..you are amazing..and so is Cam! :thumbsup2

Cam - WTG on your 8 miles!

Dave - So glad it went well...except for the getting lost! :rotfl2: Proud of your DDs!

Christa - YEA!!!!!!! I'm so glad you posted that pic. I knew she would look beautiful pregnant!

I think they are trying to kill me at work. Geez, they've been making me do ACTUAL WORK. So much so that I didn't even post yesterday! I mean REALLY now!! :lmao:

So yesterday I did my usual 45 min @ 3.8 @ 1%. This morning I did the same but did two five minutes at 3.9. OK not a big improvement but a start.

So now, to catch up....

Thank you all so much for your kind words about Mist. I haven't heard anything yet. This had been going on since February 2005, so who knows when it will actually end. In the meantime she is loved and fat and happy. Kinda like me. :teeth:

Christa - Thank you for saying I am not fat. Let's call it...curveaceous, bootylishious.....something more flattering. :p

Jen - Wow! You already lost 30 pounds! Thats fabulous! :thumbsup2 I lost 32 in the first four months of 2004 but gained 20 of it back. Which is why I am now going to WW. I'm going to try the local running stores this weekend for shoes and also an Amphipod. I'll keep you posted.

Terri - Thank you for calling me a runner. I consider that a great  honor.

Dave - WTG on that great Disney Shopping find! I'm sorry you got lost but what a fabulous pace!

Tiff - I'm very sorry about your idiotic bike injury. But I'm even more sorry that I got a chuckle out of it. :rotfl:

Krista - OMG! Were you using my husband's Icy Hot?? :lmao: He is famous for keeping things that expired a decade ago! I recently went thru all his meds and things and found prescriptions I swear from ten years ago! He's amazing!

Carrie - Mist's owner doesn't have the money for anything. Which is what we are banking on, even if the judge rules in her favor. Maybe I will just then make her an offer and she will let me keep Mist.

Paul - I am going to go to a couple local stores to check out the Amphipod. I'm going for the complete and probably totally obnoxious black and lime fashion statement. :smooth:

Mel - Mel! We are leaving on the 15th but out flight isn't until 7:30pm, so we wil be in Epcot that day since we have the Segway Tour that morning. What are your plans for that day??? OMG I would be so excited to meet you!!!! :Pinkbounc

Bill - Great idea, pretending it's not the same horse! Don't think I haven't already thought of that (insert evil grin smilie here). :rolleyes1

Pungodingy - Sorry about being so late but WELCOME! :welcome:

Felicia - We are staying at POR too in January. YAY! :bounce:

Maherae - You would think the pictures of starving horses would be enough wouldn't you? And what about the bodies of the ones that didn't make it? What will it take if that isn't enough? Hey, COOL that you are #16 on my list!! :goodvibes

Jodi - Wow, you are really booking on that TM! Great pace! :thumbsup2

Cam - Since I am so behind on posting I might have missed it but is today the day you take DD to school? I may be confused. Did you find out how you are coming up to NY? :yay:

Sara - I think you're already on your way but I pray you have a safe trip and I hope you have a wonderful time! :boat:

Colleen - I love getting up early. I think it's the best time of the day. :sunny: It's sometimes hard to get up but once I'm up I enjoy it.

Lily - I am so happy everything worked out for January for you YAY! :cool1:

Christa - If your girls have the "horse" bug, you'd better know, it never goes away. I can personally testify to that one. That's OK, it's all good, if somewhat expensive. :teeth: Great picture of Bree. She DOES look cute! And I know where she gets it from too! :bitelip:

Kevin - Oh I'm so glad you got your Garmin back. I hate losing things. :goodvibes

Kelley - OMG! Have a GREAT time!!!! :mickeyjum

OK, I better go do payroll now....

Morning all!

Kelley-- Have a Great trip!!! (And hey, from one DC area native to another.... at least you are flying out of BWI and not Dulles...)

My cold has gotten a bit better, but I'm still feeling congested. Not sleeping particularly well at night either, which doesn't help much.

I did manage to get out of the house and on the roads this morning and did 3 miles (3r/2w) in 27:33, so 9:11/mile pace. Yippee for having my Garmin back-- oh how I missed it.

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend. I am due to run 5 tomorrow morning and hope to get that post in before heading out. We are celebrating my roomate's 40th birthday this weekend (his birthday's not until Wednesday, so I guess you can call it the start of a weeklong celebration...). Thus, I don't know whether or not I will have much time (or be in any condition) to post this weekend. :p

Scary thought... tomorrow will be 21 weeks from Marathon Weekend. That makes me feel both  and :scared:

Happy training all!
Kevin :earsboy:

Just wanted to let you guys know why I havent been around. DH has messed up our internet connection in his attempts to fix something else. I have been without internet access for 2 1/2 days ! I am at the library right now.

Cant catch up with everyone because they have a time limit.

Thanks for the advise about the blister. On my way to Walgreens right now!

Judy-thats ok for laughing it was pretty funny. I hope everything goes well with Mist.

And the bruise/swelling/cut does look pretty cool. Luckily where it is, it doesnt interfere with my wogging.

Lilly-Yea you're coming!

Have a great weekend everyone! Hopefully I'll be back online soon.

wow, thanks for all the welcomes! I feel like I will really get the support that I need, you guys/gals are GREAT!! So, since I am just starting, any input on how I should start? Do I need to get into aerobics, or just start walking and build up to running, or start running very short distances and hope to get better as I go? I see a lot of you track times, how important is this? What is "normal"? I also see that the 2007 marathons are full, but that's ok, I dont know if I would be ready that soon...how soon do you have to sign up for the 2008? Thanks so much!

Pungo...what's your ultimate goal? Do you want to be able to walk or run the half or the full marathon? You'll have to keep up a 16 mile per minute pace to finish either one ahead of the sweepers, but you don't have to be at that pace now. You have plenty of time to get there.

Most of us look at this in total weekly mileage. Since you're already doing well at one day a week, try adding a second day, maybe only an extra half mile. Make sure you have at least one rest day in between your walking days. If that's comfortable, add a third day the following week. Try not to increase your mileage more than 10% per week to help prevent injury. You may have to cut back a bit on your normal long walk day to keep from increasing the total weekly mileage too much too soon.

For example, when I started in Jan '05, I was walking 1.75 miles once or twice a week. It took me until July, but by then, I was up to 3 miles, 4 days per week.

Marathoning for Mortals will help a lot with this. You're in the 'training to train' phase now. Most all of us have been there or are there so feel free to ask questions as needed. And keep us up to date on how you're doing! You're certainly welcome to join us on the WISH Scream Team for the 2007 races i :)

:wizard: for all those traveling this weekend!

It's not too late to order a WISH team bracelet! Order goes out Aug 13!

Hi all...
I was referred to this thread for support! I have set a goal of being able to do a Disney Marathon. That being said, I have never done anything like it before, sadly I am also overweight and under-exercised, AND dont really know where to start. Paul suggested "Marathoning for Mortals" and I ordered it right off, should be here in just a few days, but any other suggestions on getting started would be greatly appreciated too!! Just so you dont think I'm a total couch potato, I HAVE been in a walking club for almost 2 years, but the downside is we only walk once a week, and the walks are 1-4 miles (I know, not much...but I gotta start somewhere!) so please, support me!!
Ohboyohboyohboy! Since you've asked, and more than once, I think it only fair to warn you...You asked!

First off, please don't get too overwhelmed. There is a ton of info. To help add to your info gathering. Take a look at the links at the top of this thread. You will find much information on things you can do.

After you've read the MfM book, you may find things to begin to make more sense. Right now, I would recommend to continue with your walking, don't increase the length or pace intensity too much just now, but try to figure what you are able to do. Many programs that are in use will have you doing your walking for a certain amount of time during the week and then doing a long walk/run (LW/R) at the weekend. There is cross training involved in many programs. That can be pretty much anything you can have fun doing while getting movement, pilates, yoga, swimming, bicycling, some weight lifting, something different than walking/running to give youself a change and let your body use muscles differently.

Hope this helps some. Have fun with it as much as you can. That will make the days you don't want to do it a little easier to get through.

Take what you can work with and start out slow. Build up as you are able and try not to overdo as you go.

If I gave bad info anyone here please make it better!

You asked about signing up for the event in 2008. Welllllll, since I'm the one offering the advice, I'm going with what I tell everyone. Sign up will begin in January 2007 for the next year. Sign up as soon as you can. Part of all this fun is the training and knowing you are committed by signing on. It is a fantastic roller coaster ride that ends with your first event in a very fun place! Enjoy the ride, I did! (Everyone here knows that I kinda push folks to sign up early...I can't help myself. I think it's so worth the entire thrill of training.)
:sunny:
To all the vacationers, hope you have a wonderful fun and safe trip. Come back with pics and stories! To anyone making any trip this weekend...ditto.

I am off today, was going to travel to Chicago, sigh. Anyway went to breakfast with DH then to the trail to do 3.17 miles in 55 minutes. That was a pace of about 17:22 minutes per mile. I am not pressing for speed just yet. I hope to be able to pick up on that as training starts, but my goal will be to do the events as slow as I can and still qualify. I did the Winsor Pilates 20 min DVD too and have been back doing that steadily to make sure my back holds up through all the training. Trying to keep my core muscles strengthened.

Keep on keepin' on everyone!

Getting ready to leave work and then drive to Pittsburgh. Just wanted to say a couple of things....

Lily-- :Pinkbounc :woohoo: :Pinkbounc :woohoo: I am SO glad that you are doing the marathon. Are you going Goofy?

Christa--Bree is adorable! Does she know what she's having?

Have a good weekend everyone! Be back on Sunday!!
