Wk of Aug 6--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

Dave - I was trying to think of the perfect teenaged car (in addition to one that is not on the road much anymore, so it would no be too offensive!!!) Don't rat me out to your dad! There is actually a pinto on my running route that is kindof light blue/green. It always makes me smile when i run by it! Don't they have a reputation for spontaneous combustion?:furious:

IIRC - That was a scare made up by Ralph Nader.

Cecelia - Welcome!!! SOunds like you are on a plan similar to dh and I last year. Run as far as we could on teh plan and if we started to fail, add walking intervals. If you've already done a 10K, you should be fine!

Bekah - COngrats on teh great run!

Judy - Grrr.... Mall people. BTW, are those tags new?

Judy - I am so sorry that you had such a difficult time trying to find running shoes. Don't let it get to you too much though, most of these idiots who are looking at you that way couldn't keep up with you come January.

Cam - Thanks for the good thoughts. Luckily I haven't had any set backs since my run on Saturday and I am planning a 30 minute run for Tuesday after I drop Michael off at school. I was thinking about those shirts for my boys, but the problem is they don't come in kids sizes for the DIS Green ones, and that's what I REALLY want. Michael will be almost 6 and Lucas will be just turned 2.... I'm still trying to figure something out. I might just go out and buy some green shirts and iron on transfers. It isn't like they need Moisture Wicking Material or anything!!

Bekah - Congrats on the 8.5 miles!! You've got my longest beat by a mile and a half so far!! I am always nervous about running long runs in the evenings because it is way too easy to get caught out after dark. Same thing with arriving at the trail to early in the morning. I am so nervous to run by myself in the mornings.

Howard - Congrats on the run!! Don't you just hate the heat and humidity lately?! By the way I didn't get to congratulate you before because I was away sick. So Congrats on the school stuff!!

Well, today was Michael's first day of kindergarten!! He did absolutely wonderful and made 2 new friends. I am so proud of him. Tomorrow is his first full day, so we'll see how well he enjoys it when Mommy doesn't come to get him an hour later!!

Dana

Thank you all so much for your sage advice. :goodvibes I should have known, but...live and learn. I will try some local shops and also Cam turned me on to a great website. Thank you all again.

And Mel, OMG! I do not drive a Pinto, nor do I know anyone that does anymore. You absolutely crack me up.

Kevin - Oh wow, the Half is full....I verified my registration. Yup, I'm in there. I registered at 5:00am on the day it opened. Guess I wanted to make sure I got in there, eh? :teeth:

BTW I just spent an hour going thru my folder for this upcoming trip. Only 33 more days! We just got our ME package. YAY!

Bekah - Hey, I was just trying them out. ;) Way to go on the 8 miles! I personally think it's a HUGE big deal! :woohoo: Don't sell yourself short, woman!

Craig - You are right. I shouldn't have even bothered to go into those mall stores. What did I expect? I guess I expected some sort of customer service and knowledge. :rolleyes2

Rhonda - You're right! I saw so many "lifestyle" shoes. Like, what the heck does that mean? Shoes to make you look cool, I suppose. :smokin:

Carrie - The sweeps tag is self-inflicted. I put that in there right after I registered. The Dis tag came from a post a month or so back when I asked how Will & Grace ended and immediately got like 12 responses telling me everything that happened. :bitelip:

Dana - Hey, Michael did well! I have a picture of my first day of school. (Don't even ask what year that was.) I know it's a scarey for both of you but I'm sure he will do great. He's already got two friends!

Dana -- If you want that scream team shirt available on kids' tees, you could ask Sunny to add it to the merchandise choices. I did that when I wanted one of her designs on an apron and it wasn't offered. She added it to the merchandise choices for me. Then again, you could probably find inexpensive lime green shirts and even write on them in puffy paint.

Congrats to Michael! :thumbsup2

That reminds me, didn't Heather's kids start school last week? Heather -- how did it go? Oh, gosh, I hope I am remembering right. You know I just turned "OLD" so I might not be right.

Hey! Real quick post b/c my life is crazy! Skimmed through but really cannot comment on much!
Should we start a pacing thread?
Here is a pic after our LR on Friday! IT WAS HOT!

Erin, Me, Ron, Kim, Colleen - Sorry so big...could not get it smaller in the time I had to post.
Later! Hope all is well!

Howard - Congrats on the run!! Don't you just hate the heat and humidity lately?! By the way I didn't get to congratulate you before because I was away sick. So Congrats on the school stuff!!

Thank you for the note! I am looking forward to meeting you. I hope Michael has a great year in kindergarten. :artist: :teacher:

Howard

Mel/Chimera – We are reserved at Ohana’s for 5:45. We’ll see each other!! My kids never behave at Ohana’s so it will be interesting (they get too excited!). I hope we all get window views!!

Judy – I had the same shoe experience when I first looked. I then went to a specialty store and they were so nice. Since then I have lost over 20 pounds and have way more confidence, so those sales people better watch out!!!

I did 40 minutes on the treadmill yesterday before I had to stop. my low back on the sides at the top of your hip area (does that make sense) hurts like you wouldn't believe. My back started hurting after my gorup run on Thursday and I think I felt something pull. So I rested for 2 days and now it hurts bad again. Has anyone ever had pain there? It was so bad yesterday I had a hard time walking. DH massaged it last night and that helped a lot.

OK, gotta run!!!

Christa-- great pic! You are TINY! No wonder you are so speedy these days.

Judy-- I'm so sorry you had that bad experience. Back when Liz and Cam had similar shoe salesmen experriences we were going to sick my IC (internal commando) on them. As I recall a recent convo between you and... you, I see you have you're own IC. So next time some two-bit ignorant salesman underestimates you, just get out the IC and let 'em have it!

Actually, I had a similar experience way back when I took up roller blading. It was one of my "fat" periods in life, I was bordering 200 lbs and decided I wanted to rollerblade. I went and tried on a pair, feeling really self-conscious. Then the sales kid says, "well aren't you going to stand up and try them out?" HUH?????? I had never been on roller blades before, might have roller skated once as a small child and now I am expected to stand up in the store and try them out!!!! I had visions of all 200 lbs of me falling "splat" on the floor. It was akward at best. But the good news is, I bought them, learned (painfully) to rollerblade and spent 3 years on the bike path roller blading my heart out.

But I agree with everyone else, go to one of the "real" running stores. Isn't there a NY WISHer who owns a running store? I can't recall which one it was, but I know someone owns a running store.

As for me, the pain is quite minimal today. You'd think that would make me happy but it doesn't. It just makes me feel like this roller coaster ride will never end. I've had too many mini-ups to get hopeful yet.

Sunny

Sunny -- so good to see you here, sweetie! Oh, and if you didn't catch the earlier post, can you add scream team tee shirts in kid and toddler size to your merchandise offerings? There might be some people looking for smaller sizes. :thumbsup2

I did my 60 minutes on the TM tonight. First mile was 14:35 and the second was 14:30 but overall I did 4.09 which is 14:40. A friend came over to chat when I was 35 minutes in and it certainly made the time go faster, even if I didn't.

Cam, I'm going to make you the store manager ;) I've added children's shirts/sweatshirts, a toddler crawler and even a bib! I've also added the adult "value" shirt which is the cheapest they offer. It's white, lighter fabric and only prints on the front, but very economical. Unfortunately, all the kids stuff is white, too.

Sunny

OUT OF CONTROL! That burns me up. I have to agree with everyone else...go to a running store. My running store peeps know me by name. One of the girls that works there even called me the day after Goofy to see how it went. That really touched me that she even remembered! I LOVE my store...It is called Run For Your Life.
I can come and go EVIL QUEEN on those stupid mall guys if you want. That makes me mad that they talked to your husband instead of you. AHHHHH! :furious:
If it makes you feel any better...people have made, "You don't look like you run" comments to me. Just b/c I was not super thin!
Please also get a good shoe so you won't get hurt.

Good Morning Team: :surfweb:

I had a good workout yesterday after work. Went to the university track walked 1 lap, jogged 1.5 miles, walked 1 lap, jogged 1.5 miles, and walked 1 lap. So that is 3.75 miles all together. I forgot my Garmin at home (it was charging) so I don't know my time, but my legs felt OK. Slowly but surely their getting better. I'm back to the pool today for a SWOG to give my legs time to recover.

Sunny- I hope you are doing OK. Here's PD :wizard: :wizard: for all your troubles. Oh, I just read that you are having a low pain day but are still in a "low" mood. It sounds like you might have some "learned helplessness" settling in. Please fight it with all you have Sunny. Take each day as it comes and be happy that yesterday was a low pain day. Just accept it as it is.

Rhonda- I'm so excited about the dessert party you've planned. It is going to be sooooo much fun!!!

Bekah- 8 miles sounds awesome!!! I sure wish I could do that!

Howard- Great job on the run in the humidity, and have fun getting your classes picked out.

Dana- Congrats to Michael on starting kindergarten. My DD5 princess: starts this year too, but not until after Labor Day.

Jen- I can't offer much advice on your hip pain, but I'll send out some PD. :wizard: :wizard: Wow, I'm excited that I booked O'hana's for after the marathon. It sounds like it's a popular choice on the boards.

Cam- Great job on your 4 miles on the treadmill! :thumbsup2

Judy- Did you get to go to a real running store yesterday?

OK, off to do the leg exercises. I feel like the guy in the donut commericials -"time to make the donuts"...

Hi Everyone,

Just a quick post for this morning - Sorry I didn't get to post sooner about the Ice Cream 5k. I did an average of 10.04 min/mil. The race wasn't one of my favorites but I'm glad this is one that my mother actually went to.

Sunday was a little on the brutal side with the run (I'm not sure why - it seemed like the perfect weather), a lot of people including myself, were taking walking breaks every now and then.

I guess I can't be too tough on the race, it was their first ever time doing this one but it wasn't super organized either. A couple of cool things though....Dan Patrick (ESPN) hosted the event, his wife helped organize). Plus, our attorney general ran in the race - I don't know I thought it was kind of cool to have Blumenthal run --- he passed me by and I didn't even know it until he turned his head to talk to someone.

Well, I have to get ready for work. Have a great day everyone!

Wow, I'm gone from the computer for 1 day & boy did I miss alot!!!!

Judy-Let me be the 500th person to tell you those mall people are stupid. They have no idea what real athletes need in a shoe nor have they actually done anything harder than pull those baggy pants up when they finally fall down to their knees (I hate those baggy pants) I love going to Fleet Feet. Even at my heaviest, they treated me like a real athlete & went over how I trained, how I walked/ran & what I needed. I just love walking into that store! I know you will find one you love too. And I love that you tore off running , that is hilarious :lmao:

Cam-It was my kids that started school last week. Parker started, but since Kindergarten has phase in days, yesterday was Seth's first day. He jumped in the car when I picked him up & before I could say anything he said "AWESOME!" Already has a friend in class & another friend from tball has recess at the same time so he got to play with him too. He had a great day & seems to have a great teacher. I think we lucked out this year as they both seem to have great teachers. That makes all the difference. And you are not old!

Dana-good to see you again!

Bekah-you rock! But please dont be out in the dark alone again :sad2: Are you signed up for the Sept Disney Tri? Have you done Danksin? That is on my race wish list.

I'm going with my best friend this morning for a mani/pedi (no I'm not going to let them scrape my feet this close to DL) She got me a certificate for us to go for my birthday. So this a.m. I get the kids ready for school, do my 4 miles, get showered & then get pampered. And since we'll be out , we'll have to do lunch too. A girl's gotta eat, right?!

Good morning everyone! :sunny:

First, let me thank all of your for your prayers and pixie dust. Matt seems to be out of the woods. He ended up getting the feeding tube on Saturday night and it was removed on Monday night. Actually, I'm not sure, but I think it might not have been a feeding tube afterall. (MIL's info is sketchy - she NEVER questions ANY medical event - and BIL/SIL are too busy to reach.) According to MIL, it was actually some sort of bile-sucker tube   :faint:

Anyway, yesterday he sat in a chair and eventually walked down the corridor a wee bit. Afterward he slept for 5 hours. Poor guy hasn't eaten since Tuesday, Aug 1. Today he might get clear liquids. If he can tolerate that without vomiting or diarreah, AND IF his fever breaks, he MIGHT be discharged Wednesday. But Thursday is probably more realistic.

Thanks again for all the positive thoughts. I truly believe they helped.

As for my training, well, it could be better. That teeny little run I tried on Saturday took a toll. My right leg (the short one) has been tight and achy ever since. I managed to complete my LW on Sunday by merely dismissing the soreness. Monday I paid for it with limping. Got a good night's sleep last night and managed a slow and easy 5 miles before work today. (Boy the days are getting shorter. Sun never even cracked the horizon before I got home at 6:00a.)

We'll have house guests on Wednesday and Thursday, so my next real walk will have to be Friday. Or as we're calling it at my house, vacation-eve. :cool1: :Pinkbounc :cheer2:  Check out my counter!

Thanks again for the prayers,

Kelley - So glad MAtt's doing better. Ughhh! Not gettign teh real story on what's going on is so hard. CAn't believe your MIL is so clueless!Yup, if he's just going to be strting on liquids, it very likely was a bile-sucker. (Scares me that I know these things at way too young an age!)

Jodi - WTG on the 5K!

Tiff - Enjoy that pedicure! I wanted one all spring and never foudn the time. FInally did my own in July.

DAve - Congrats on the workout!

Judy - Your story reminds me of the one that I think Tiff told last year. She went in to the store looking for Gu and Skippy teh sales boy told her she probably didn't want that. It's pretty high in calories It's made for poeple who like have run one mile and want to run another one! :furious:

OK, I told myself yesterday that if it was less than 82, I'd run. It was 81, so I did my 50 minutes outside. It was not too bad. I got a new neck cooler thing that helps. My pace was better than it has been, which is good for a weekday. However, I thought I was doing ok an dmy Garmin lost signal! Grrr.... For a half mile the pace just went up adn up. Now, I wasn't flying but was not doing 18 mpm. How frustrating! Endeed up with about an 11:10 pace. Better than it's been and it was still pretty hot out. Probably not hte best idea to dring a 32 oz Powerade teh hour before, but at elast I didn't dehydrate. ;) My legs are tired, though. Had to do a cold soak last night. I have not worked out enough to have tired legs. (please do not remind me that that's why they're probably tired.) Oh well. It was a step in the right directin and more inspiration to get it in gear. Less than 2 weeks 'til training for the full! :scared:

Good morning everyone, wow, do I have a lot to catch up on! I just realized I haven't been here to really talk since Thursday morning! I did 3 miles with Hines last night, we did it in 33:23, I waited until 9:00 to go and it was STILL hot and humid, my skin was so wet with sweat. Thanks for all the congrats on my 5K, I was thinking I did my very first 5K on Aug. 6, 2005 and I finished in 39:04, so in a year, I have taken 7 minutes off my 5K time. :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: I feel so much better now and I'm a lot faster than I was this time last year, heck I'm a lot faster than I was when I was in middle of training for the half. Okay, I need you guys to diagnose me, I have a minor running injury, for the past month or so whenever I run, my left calf is so tight and it feels bruised, but there is no discoloration. The pain is not that bad, I can certainly run through it, but I don't want it come back and haunt me in the middle of marathon training. Does anyone know of any good stretches I can do for my calf muscle? Do you think if I put Icy Hot on it to relax it, it would help?

Craig--Is your week any better than last week? What a day!

Christa--You look fabulous!! I can't believe how tiny your legs are! Are you a 2 now? And I love the idea of a pacing group, right now I'm running an upper 10 minute mile, hoping to improve on that, but of course distance changes everything. I have to warn everyone, I'm not a very social runner, I get lost in my thoughts and I rarely speak to anyone around me (other than to say hi), but it would be nice to have someone to run with and experience the event with.

Judy-- :grouphug: :furious: that makes me mad! And people wonder why I have no patience with teenagers. Their attitude is uncalled for and if I were you, I would never set foot in any of those stores again. You are going to love going to a running store, just stepping in ours makes me so excited about running. I always tell Stephen when I retire (ie. have babies :goodvibes ), I'm going to work in a running store. :wizard: that you find the perfect shoe!

Cam--Happy belated birthday! :bday: Sorry I didn't check back on Thursday to tell you! It sounds like you had a very nice day.

Tiff--Your girls day sounds wonderful! Have a great time and eat something at least a little fattening!

Jen-- :wizard: for your back! I have a very temperamental back, just moving the wrong way can throw my back out. Although, I have noticed, since I started running I rarely have back problems any more, it's been well over a year since I've had a disk slip out of place. How is your asthma? Is the inhaler working?

Sunny-- :wizard: :grouphug: :wizard: my heart is breaking for you. I hope the neurosurgeon can find the problem and fix it. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Kelley--So glad that Matt is doing much better. I am a strong believer in the power of prayer and having faith. Have a wonderful vacation and eat a kringla for me!

Bekah--Did I read that right? You went from 2 miles to 8?? WOW!!! Were you sore yesterday? Be careful about running at night by yourself, you never know what could happen. That's why I'm training Hines to run with me, I at least feel a little safer.

Sara--When do leave on your cruise? I hope you have a fantastic time!

Dave--Good job on your run last night. Sometimes the best thing you can do is run without any timing devices and do it for the love of running.

I'd love to stay and talk some more, but I do need to get started on my work. to everyone I missed, it's not because I don't love you!

Happy Tuesday guys :) Only two more days until the surprise trip and I am so ready to go!!

Dana & Tiff - I have my youngest, Corinne, starting kindergarten too. I am glad there are others here to share my pain. She is my baby, so it cuts all the much deeper. I hope I don't embarrass her with my open sobbing on the first day of school.

Judy - Terribly sorry you had deal with some ignorant teenagers. I wonder if any of them could run a 1/2 marathon. I do agree that most mall shoppers merely buy athletic shoes for comfort and style purposes, not performance. Definitely go to a specialty store that will treat you right.

Jen - :wizard: For your back pain. I bet nightly massages from DH would work wonders. See if you can sell him on the idea.

Sunny - Very glad to hear you're having good days and I completely understand your cautious optimism. Thanks for adding the kids sizes to your cafe press offerings.

Cam - Great pace on the treadmil run. I bet the chatting made it feel all the more easy.

Dave - Glad to hear you continue to make improvements in the healing process.

Kelley - Thanks for updating us about Matt. Please continue to post on his condition. I will keep him in my prayers.

Krista - Shaving 7 minutes off in a year is wonderful progress. I hope your calf issue works itself out. I have to stretch my calves well due to my plantar faciitis issues. I usually just stretch against the wall, pushing my heels back one at a time. I am also NOT a social runner at all. I have to run MY race and I cannot do that unless I fly solo. Love my IPod  I don't even talk to DH when we run together. He doesn't take it personally because he knows that I am very self-absorbed when I run :confused3

Carrie - Glad you were able to get a good run in. I hope the legs recover quickly. I haven't been brave enough to do a cold soak in a while. They do work oh so well though...

40 minutes of speedwork for me this morning followed by a pilates class. I am just doing last minute cleanup before we leave on Thursday. The girls still have no clue. Packing is mostly done.

I will check in again before I'm outta here.

Tiff – I am so glad that Parker and Seth both have great teachers and that Seth enjoyed his first day of kindergarten! :sunny: That must make you breathe a bit easier. Enjoy your mani/pedi! :goodvibes:

Jodi – Good job on the ice cream 5K, though I didn’t hear anything about any great end-of-race food. Did they at least feed you well? ;)

Kelley – I am so glad to hear that Matt is doing well. I hope he gets to go home tomorrow. pixiedust:

Carrie – Great job on getting outside for your run! My Garmin at one point on Saturday said my pace was 23:04 or something like that. I knew I was going slow, but that just made me burst out laughing. I figured that as long as I kept going, it would even out and I’d figure out the overall pace once I was done.

Krista – That is an awesome improvement in a year! Congratulations! :cool1: I’m sorry I can’t give any advice on your calf issue, but I’ll send pixiedust: Thanks for the birthday wish!

Dave – Congratulations on your steady improvement in strengthening your legs. That must feel awesome. I think it is really smart to swog today to give your legs a break. :thumbsup2

Sara – My heart goes out to you as you send Corinne off to kindergarten. I remember when my kids started school. Lots of :sad1: Yeah, on my part, not theirs! ;)

I can’t even imagine what I’ll feel like next Friday when we drop Jenn off to college to start band camp. I’m sure I’ll be a mess. THEN Howard and I will go out and have a nice quiet dinner alone.

I am supposed to do 40 mins cross-training tonight. I may end up doing the bike.

Have a great day, everyone!
