Hello everyone!

For those new to us, we're a group of people who are planning to participate in walking/running events throughout the year. Some of us are training for the 2006 Disneyland Half and for the 2007 WDW Half/Full marathons. We'll also be posting news/training for various other events throughout the year. We range from non-running beginners to triathletes. Come join us, whether you're training for an event or walking/running for fitness!

Posting tonight from lovely Gainesville. It's kinda weird being in town as an alumnae and not a student. Just returned from a UF Gator Women's Volleyball tourney and planning to attend a Women's Soccer game tomorrow before heading on home.

Keeping it brief tonight...

Ashley...welcome back!

Maybe a new cafepress shirt with Tiff's saying..."I run so I can wear cute running clothes" :thumbsup2 I think Terri made a good point on the weight thing...even if the scale isn't budging, there may be some body 'remodeling' going on. I now weigh about what I did when I got married 9 years ago, but I'm able to buy clothes a size smaller than I did then. Of course, I do still wonder a bit about vanity-sizing

Monica...the 2006 WDW half was my first WDW race and first half of any sort. No full yet, but on deck for 2008.

Don't forget chat...8:30pm EDT on Wed :surfweb:

Good training everyone!

I have run the WDW 1/2 once - 2005
and I will finish the DL 1/2 in 2006!

I have run one other 1/2 - the Royal Victoria in 2003, here in BC

My goal is to complete my first full marathon before I turn 40 - so I have 2008, 2009 and 2010. I have set my eyes on WDW in 2008 (and I have two fall back years just in case!)

This will be my first WDW marathon - And my first marathon ever. Yikes. But I love everything Disney so I figure I will love the marathon too. :lmao:

I did the WDW 1/2 marathon in 2005 & 2006. I am training for the DL 1/2 marathon and the WDW marathon.

Welcome back Ashley! Your quote on your siggie has always been motivational to me. It describes the last 3 years of my life perfectly.

I have been under the weather with a cold all week, but your posts have motivated me to get in my 6 miles. I'll be back to report later.

See, now I'm hooked. I don't know how I ever got away from posting here!??? But, alas, it did happen. So, here's what I'm thinking:

If DBF is able to go to the cabin that weekend, I will do the race. I think he will be going, so I think I will be racing! I am also going to call the number first because the entry is a little steep and I want to know why. Now, it says it is mostly a trail race, so do you think I need specific shoes? Or just shoes that I'm okay with getting dirty? I have run trails before around here, but I always just wear an older pair of "I don't care if they get dirty" shoes.

Another question is: How often do you all run? I love the routine of going out every day, but it seems to be pretty hard on my joints, so sometimes I just walk if need be. I know other people who run every day, and they are in great shape and I want to be one of them!

As for my racing history:
01/05 - WDW Half Marathon
04/06 - Minneapolis Running Opener 8 Mile
05/06 - New Prague, MN Half Marathon
Goal: Marathon by my 26th birthday, which leaves it pretty much as next summer as I can't afford to get to Disney World in January! (26th Birthday is March, 2008)

Rachael - You have an excellent memory! Yes, my brother and I were there in '05. It's good to see so many people are still around!

Heather - I'm glad to see that I could serve as a small bit of inspiration. I also think it is a beautiful quote, which is why I haven't changed it.

OH! Another question: Do you keep a log of your workouts somewhere? Where and for what purpose? Does anybody else find that their legs are toned but their abs have retained a certain flabbiness? I wish I could get rid of it! (I've had it so long it even has a name now: I've been waiting for baby Herman to arrive for years now, but Hermie just loves me all to much!)

I think I've asked enough questions for now, so I will leave you all with a thought:
"Running is a big question mark that's there each and every day. It asks you, 'Are you going to be a wimp or are you going to be strong today?'"
-Peter Maherm, Irish-Canadian Olympian and sub-2:12 marathoner
(I think I need to hang this in my house somewhere, possibly above my bed)

Have a good day, all!

so i've been bad this past week. i haven't been very good about my running. but that's it, i will do my run tonight, and then no more days off except for the one that my training schedule allows!

Thanks to all for the congrats on our upcoming bundle of joy. I will keep you all up to date as we go through this exciting experience.

My long distance runnining history:

Too many 5k's & 10k's to count
New Mexico's Finest 1/2 marathon - Labor Day weekend 2005
Chips & Salsa II (1/2 marathon) the week after the labor day 1/2
Duke City Marathon (first marathon) Late October 2005
WDW 1/2 and Full January 2006
Fiesta De Albuquerque Marathon April 2006.

My upcoming race calendar is all Disney, all the time! The DL 1/2 next month, and Goofy in January 2007. I might throw another 1/2 in between DL and Goofy, but I don't think I will do a Marathon between now and Goofy.

Yesterday we did 8 miles. I ran it with my wife and my brother. We started with a 3/1 for the first 4 miles and then went to a run 2 minutes at the quarter mile, and then walk the remaining distance of that quarter mile. We finished in 1:52, which is exactly 14:00 pace. All that we wanted was to come in under the 16 minute sweeper pace. I did it as a dress rehearsal for the DL 1/2, to see if I was going to run with my wife and brother, or if I was going to run my own. I think I will run with them and enjoy the experience, instead of trying to PR. There will be other races to try and set a personal best.

Congrats to all who finished week 1 of MFM. Keep putting in the steps!

Happy training everyone.

Paul

Well, my LR was a real stonker. I did 4.4 miles, but it was so hot and humid that I had to stop before I got sun stroke. I should have just gone to the fitness center and used the treadmill, but it was cloudy when I started and I thought I could make it. :guilty: Oh well, 4.4 is better than nothing. I have got to get rid of this cold before DL!

Ashley! Welcome back! I’m so glad you are here. You’re young, you can make that half. As for the abs thing. Pilates! Yoga for stretching, and you’ll be good to go. The tummy probably won’t completely go away…that’s the “depositary” area some of us hold, but the exercise will make you strong in that area and when weight loss allows for that final stronghold to be released there will be tone and strength there and in the meantime the running/wogging will be easier.

Rich, I’m next door in Broadview Heights. I train primarily on the Towpath. I love the Towpath event and this year they are offering a half is tempting. I haven’t registered. It is close to our vaca time. Still contemplating. May try to get DS (26) to go for the Towpath either 5k or 1/2. He is going in January with us to WDW to try first marathon. Oh and stick with us, if you are measuring

Monica, my first half was 2005 in WDW; second half in Chicago 2005; third half in WDW, first full WDW = Goofy!

Mel, sounds like you are having a great time there. Thanks for continuing the thread even that you are away enjoying life. I love your CafePress idea. Don’t forget “It’s all about the jewelry!” too.

Cecilia, I know you’ve heard me say this before. Having your first experience at WDW is worth the wait! It makes it all the sweeter too.

Heather, sorry those steps turned into a stonker. I was hopin it wasn’t too much for ya with that cold. Sometimes it’s good to be out in that heat if you treat it as an opportunity and don’t overdo. Sounds like you did just fine considering!

Holly, you can do it!

Tiff, good for you getting up to go do it today!

Dave, Yay! for your official LR and pain free too! Progress, and determination cudos.

Pat, thanks for the “sweep times” info. I’m not certain how they handle letting you know if you are “close” to the end. I know in ’05 it was not pretty. They closed the gates b4 everyone arrived so you had no way of knowing. I think there was correction to that debacle last year, but don’t know what.

Paul, I love the way you are thinking. Being there with friends and family will be such fun and you will have fond memories. There certainly will be other ops for PRs.

We are into 19 weeks left to train for WDW in January! I made it successfully through week 1.

Rainy day off for me. Keep on keepin' on!

Hi, everyone! I did my 5K yesterday, and it was AWESOME! I got a PR, 31:17, but even better than that: I had even splits.
Mile 1 10:01
Mile 2 10:02
Mile 3 10:05
.1 1:09
______
31:17

That was probably my last 5K of the year, so I'm glad that I had a great run and didn't end the summer with a stonker.

Ashley-- :welcome: again! Glad you are back.

Monica--So far the only Disney race I have done was the 2006 1/2 marathon. Aside from Disney, I did the 2006 Flying Pig 1/2 marathon and I am training for 2007 Disney full marathon.

Heather--Hope you are feeling better! I hear ya with the heat and humidity, it's killing us too. I am doing way too many runs on the treadmill.

Terri-- :p :p :p :p :p :p :p

Ashley - I walk everyday (or try to). I ran 3 times a week when I am training. I run on Tuesday and Thursday, and then my long run on Saturday or Sunday depending on our plans for the weekend.

I am also with Lily - Yoga and especially pilates are good for the core. I am overweight so I have a big tummy, but even when I was at a good weight I never had a flat tummy - just not my body type, but it wasn't flabby like it is now.

My long term goal is to be healthy -fit, decent weight (140-150 is good for me), toned, cholestrol and blood pressure normal (they are now, and I want to keep it that way) etc etc.

My first long run was today. I managed to do 5 miles, slowing down and walking 1-2 minutes every mile or so (and walking much more toward the end). Managed to get a bit lost in my own neighbourhood as I was taking random turns to keep it interesting!

Near the end I was starting to get really tired, and the thought of all of you out there pushing yourselves alongside me really kept me going!

Looking forward to getting my runs in this week! (Never thought that I would be thinking that... )

Best wishes to all!
chris :surfweb:

Happy Sunday to everyone! It's the beginning of a new week & new thread.

I was able to get in 3 miles last night before going to bed for work today- 12.5 hours of work. I'm debating running after I get home from work tonight at 9pm or maybe I'll go to bed...I don't know yet.

Wow, everyone is really training well! It's inspiring to log on and see so many of you getting in your steps. I know it keeps me going, even on days I don't really want to, so thanks everybody!!

Heather, I went the exact same distance that you did here in Houston this morning: 4.4 miles. I was shooting for 5, but I just can't run in this humidity. Since I am new to distance running and training for my first half, I have never tested myself in this weather, and I don't know how much of it to blame on it, or the fact that I may not be good at distance. All I know, is that it drains me to run outside. The same miles on the treadmill leave me energized, so it's kind of frustrating. :confused3

Also I have a question. Can anyone recommend a Garmin watch for me, a beginner? I am tired of trying to coordinate my timer and my pedometer. I don't know anything about them. Do they also monitor your heartrate? Will they memorize your splits? Thanks for any advice!

Tracey

ps Chris, I just read your blog that you linked in your signature and it's great! I am a beginning runner too, so our training has a lot in common. Your initial blog was great, and I found myself thinking, that is my husband to a "T"! (Though there is a slight age difference in your favor! :) )

Heather - I hope you kick the cold before you have to travel for DL. :wizard: Sorry to hear your LR wasn't what you hoped for. Get some rest and I'm sure next week will be better.

Paul - Congrats to you and your wife!! :cool1: Congrats on the LR. :cheer2:

Lily - Congrats on the successful completion of week 1.

Tracey - I believe most of us who have Garmin's on this board have the 201's.

One week post-op for me, so I limited my LR to 10 miles. It felt really good. The better news is that I was actually able to donate blood today for the first time in 13 months!! I am O negative, so I try frequently to donate, but being chronically anemic, I don't usually have much luck. Since I had surgery last week and had just run, I wasn't too optimistic, but I was pleasantly surprised that I had passed the test!! Yeah! :cloud9:

Best of luck to all with training this week :)

Pat-- thanks for the "sweeper" info. You will not be swept :wizard: :cheer2:

Krista-- Awsome job on the 5K PR  :cheer2:  Those really are even splits!!!!

I did fairly well this weekend. I went 8 miles yesterday with a pace of around 11:35. That was a little faster than I wanted but I still felt good at the end. Although less than an hour after finishing, I had to mow the yard so that took another 2 hours of excercise.

Today I rested and tried to catch up on other things. Hopefully I can keep up better this week although seeing how this is on page 2 already, I may get far behind in reading again.

Bill

Got home to find out we're the new favorite target for TS Ernesto. Must be that new Super Target that's getting ready to open a couple miles from here
Looks like cross-training this week may consist of anchoring 4x8 sheets of plywood across the windows. :guilty:

Tiger lily what a small world. I run alot on royalwood and the side streets off it. If you do run the towpath let me know and we will have to say hi  . I'm planning on half or full next year at WDW so if you run it again will meet there.
