Wk of Aug 20--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

Mel - Erin generally works the closing shift. She is coming home for the weekend tomorrow. It will be good to see her.

Dave - I got your message about the desserts. haven't stayed in Rochester since the time I saw you. It seems easier for me to just drive back and forth.

Todays training was supposed to be a 40 min walk. I opted for a bike instead. The top of my for started hurting again during last nights w/r and I also had pain in my right hamstring. Decided not to push things. Not sure what will happen tomorrow after picking Erin up in Geneseo. Mom is picking her up at the airport in Buffalo for me.

Sunny - hope the shot works and you are releived of your pain.

I still have not committed to WDW full. I am keeping track of how full the marathon is getting. I want to see how my foot will hold up as I train for the ATM in October.

Cam - how was it dropping DD off at school? How is your training going?

Everyone - continue to have good training days.

Well, I have some news to share with my WISH family...

My wife and I are expecting our 2nd child! :cloud9: We are both really excited about the new addition to our family.

Fortunately, the doctor says that she can still do the DL 1/2 as long as she takes it easy, drinks plenty of water, and listens to her body.

She does a pretty good job of listening to how she is doing right now. She cut her 8 mile workout short on Sunday (down to 5) because she wasn't feeling all that great. She was wearing her WISH shirt during that run, and she said that it gave her inspiration that she was out there and started, which is a whole lot better than not starting at all.

So, I missed my usual track workout tonight because of a doctors appointment with her. Good reason in my opinion!

Happy training everyone.

Paul

Well, DH and I have decided that it isn't going to work for me to do the Disney tri after all. I am bummed out, but I REALLY want to do the Marathon. And our minivan broke, blah, blah.

I am still doing the local tri here in 2.5 weeks and we have lots of time to plan for the marathon. We don't have to try to figure out how to get a bike for me then, either.

Trying to stay positive here.

Paul - congratulations to you and your wife on your upcoming new addition.

Sunny - :grouphug:

As for gels etc.....After lots of bugging my GP, running clinic instructor and nutritionist, this is what I have found works for me:

Before race (about 2 hours) - 1/2 bagel with peanut butter and 1/2 to whole banana.

Miles 1 to 6 - Drink water

Miles 6 to end of Half - Drink an "ade" drink. Or have a gel or a bar with water. Do not drink an ade (powerade, gatorade etc) with the gel or bar.

I have IBS and I have real trouble with the gels and the bars (power bars, clif bars etc). So I drink powerade.

I also have either a Mars Bar cut into 13 pieces or 13 gummie bears in a ziplock in my bumbag, and I have one at each mile marker. - It started out as self bribery......"get to the next mile and you can have a treat!" Now I don't really need them and I don't always eat them, but they're there if I need them!

Rachael

Paul - Congrats to you and DW!

Sunny - So sorry about the problems with the new Dr. Glad you could get PT appts. Hope the shot works for you. Sending :grouphug: your way. hang in there!

Judy - I've done the same thing as you. Saw a race I thought I'd like to do and then checked the minimum mpm requirements and though "well, that race is out!" . I don't think I can even do my hometown Philly Marathon
because they require a 12 mpm pace.

Tracey - sorry I can't help with the speed question. Me and speed don't go in the same sentence! :teeth:

As far a nutrition goes before/during long runs, here is mine: If it is a long run
of over 8 miles, I'll take a snickers marathon bar (yum) and a strawberry/banana carb-boom gel. I'll chase the gel with water. I'll usually take a Gatorade or Propel with me, too. I'll have some water in the car for after the run, also.

Before the WDW 1/2 and full this year, I ate a PB & J sandwich (at 2:30 in the morning) and had a Propel. Took a Gatorade with me on the course (like it better than Powerade)as well as a oatmeal raisin cliff bar, drank water at every water station and ate the bananas/oranges/etc when they were offered on the course. I never felt dehydrated or hungry. Once the race was over, though, I could have eaten a horse (sorry Judy) :teeth:

CRAP!!!! I missed it AGAIN!! Thanks to a wonderful DING on my computer this evening DH surprised me with a spur of the moment trip to DisneyLand, and guess what?! It's the same weekend as the DL half, so I'll be hoping to see some of you there. Hopefully I can remember the chat next week, but for today I was soexcited to plan my first ever trip to DL that I forgot all about it. I hope everyone is doing well, and I'll talk to you all again later.

Dana

Morning Everyone,

Just a quick post for right now - last night I didn't make it in time enough to run with my running group, they meet at 6 in Milford and although I live in Milford, I work in Norwalk and yesterday's drive was just getting me into Milford right at 6:00.....the group meets sharply at 6:00 (I was still on the turnpike) .

Anyhow, I did go to the fitness center and did a little over 5 miles -- I could have done a little bit more but my stomach was starting to bug me. Anyhow, 1 mile was a warm-up @ a pace of 3.7 - 3.9 (forget the min/mi), 3 miles at @ 5.3 pace (11.32 min/mil), 1.70 miles at 5.0 pace (12.00 min/mi). I'm a little dissappointed that I did finish that last mile but - hey I'm getting to work out right? :goodvibes

Good Morning TEAM: :surfweb:

I have my last x-country race tonight so no workout this morning. Gives me some time to check-in. I'm going to miss this x-country series. It was a really fun series of races, and I loved having them to do with my princesses, DD8 princess: and DD5 princess:. DD8 princess: says she thinks she's going to run the mile kids race tonight. I'm excited for her, and proud of her for even considering the challenge.

Sorry I missed the chat last night - the whole family went to the minor league baseball game here in town. We had free tickets, and it was a lot of fun. Absolutely beautiful night. Thanks for the advice about the surprise - I'm still figuring out how to deal with it. I said to my DW, "If I were to take the kids out of school for a week in January, I think I would rather do something else than spend it with your Dad and Step-mom." I was also playing up the point about being in a condo, and we'd have to fix all our meals, etc.

To all the discussion about calorie supplements during long runs - I've never done anything, and I haven't had a run longer than 6.2 miles in years. I'm taking everything in, and really learning a lot from the discussion. My long run this Saturday is 5 miles, and I think after this week I'll be experimenting with some different things to see what works for me.

Sunny- Always thinking about you, and hope your recovery is going well. Do any workouts or have any PT yesterday?

Pungodingy- as far as too far/too fast goes, just listen to your body. If you feel OK, and aren't hurting anywhere you're doing great. Keep it up! :thumbsup2

Mel/Chimera- Great job on your run! Wow, moving on up to W2/R8, that's fantastic! I hope you're not having any trouble with your feet and your PF. Snickers marathon bar chased with diet Pepsi - that reminds me of my diet in college. My regular lunch would be a Snickers bar and Dr. Pepper - talk about heavy fuel. Guess the 20yo body is a lot different than the 37yo body. Re: the condo on Sanibel, yeah it does sound great - I wish the offer was for a different time though and not 3 weeks after I'm planning on being down there (and taking kids out of school) for the marathon.

Rich- :welcome: This has been a great group, and they have kept me going with my training since January. I haven't stuck with a training plan for this long in years, and it's really due to this group/TEAM!

Hi Kathy- Sure, that makes a lot of sense to drive back and forth between Syracuse and Rochester. It's not that far at all. We were thinking we might come out to Syracuse for the state fair, but not sure if it's going to work into the schedule. Hope your foot pain diminishes, and is nothing serious.

Paul- CONGRATULATIONS party: that is wonderful news. Wishing you all the best for a happy, healthy new baby. How exciting!!!

Bekah- Just wanted to send out some PD :wizard: :wizard:, sounds like you could use some good vibes... Hang in there, we all have ups and downs. Keep your eyes on the prize for the WDW Full. See you in January! :wave2:

Terri- Philly Marathon has a 12mpm pacing requirement!!! WOW! That's fast! I guess they're not going to have too many of us Penguins in that one.

Dana- Cool! Spur of the moment trip to DL! How fun!!!

Hi Jodi :wave2: 5 miles for a mid-week run is super!!! I wouldn't worry about the pace at all. I think that is a great workout.

OK, have a great day everyone!

Jodie - Oh excellent ! Yes we have to meet! That would be so cool. You'll be my first DISer! I have been emailing the race director. Oh he's a pip! What a funny guy! He gave me this link.... http://www.hitekracing.com/ Look at all the races I found!

Oh - wow, I'm you're first Diser..... :goodvibes Cool :thumbsup2 Oh, I'm actually registered for at least one of the races - The United Technologies (Hartford Marathon) is one of them that I am registered for.....Although, I am only doing the half.

Closer to the race I will PM with my cell number (I will have it on me for before the race and after the race - Bob will hold onto it until then). :goodvibes I'm so excited to finally meet one of the peeps off of the Dis.

It gets pretty expensive registering for all of the races but I want to be trained well for Disney. :goodvibes

Dana - see you at DL! :wave2:

I ended up skipping my 3 miles yesterday. I was exhausted and slept all afternoon. Then the phone rang. It was Chad telling me his sister (the one who lost the 16 year old son a few weeks ago) overdosed on sleeping pills. :sad2: She's going to be ok. She's in hospital, very embarrassed and dosn't want family to see her now. So, I lost all motivation to go out and wog those 3 miles.

I do have good news to report, however: I made Lifetime at Weight Watchers last night. I don't have to pay them anymore!

Ok, have to go back a few pages & catch up with all of you... :surfweb:

Thanks for all the help and advice will try the gels this weekend and let you all know Sunday. Just a thought i started running to win a park race at WDW and lost over 100 pounds. Just remember no matter how hard it is to get up and do it remember your goal and as Nike says Just Do It. I can't look myself in the mirror if i don't go for my run Daily. If i feel poor i just run less but i still run. This board is great i wish i had the support and info when i first started. :thumbsup2

Good morning TEAM!!! I feel like Melissa: my booty hurts!!!!!!!!!! I did the stationary bike last night for xt, that was the first time I have been on a bike seat since I was a freshmen in high school, I had forgotten how narrow those seats are! Plus I kept sliding off the seat (can you adjust the tip of the seat?) and I wasn't thinking and I was wearing my booty shorts--have to remember bike riding=longer shorts! I haven't been posting this week because I have been a little discouraged. I've been doing my runs, but my left leg has REALLY been bothering me, the pain starts in my calf, moves to my shin, and then goes down to my heel. I have no idea what's causing the pain and if it's serious or just marathon training aches. Once I start running, I'm okay, but going from walk to run is pretty painful. After Tuesday I took some Advil and iced my entire leg and now my leg feels fine, I'm doing my long run (5 miles) tonight because I have a 5K on Saturday, so we'll see what happens.

Paul--Congratulations to you and your wife!! That is wonderful. :wizard: for a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby!

Kristi-- :grouphug: for your family and your SIL during this time. I can't even imagine what you guys are going through.

Sunny-- :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug: you are in my prayers.

Pungo--You are doing great! Just listen to your body, it will tell you if you are going too far or too fast too soon.

Dave--I'm glad you had time to talk this morning. I don't know how you can get up so early to work out. :wizard: on your predictament. Do you think you can tell your FIL of your plans and have him offer the week of the marathon to your wife? You guys can accept the week (as a ploy), then your wife will know you are going to FL in January, she just won't know what part of FL. As an aside, it's a shame you can't use the condo, other than WDW, Sanibel is my favorite part of FL.

Terri--You realize that we are going to be enemies on Friday don't you? ;)

Rich-- :welcome:

Dana--I keep missing the chats too. I'm jealous that you are going to Disneyland!

Cam--How are you doing? Are you surviving without your daughter?

There's a lot more I need to say, but I better get off here and get started on my work. I need to either Dis at night or quit my job. :teeth:

Kristi - sorry to hear about this latest development for your and Chad's family. I wish you all the best and strength in dealing with all of this. How very, very sad. Congratulations on meeting the WW goal, although it sounds like it might be a little bittersweet for you right now.

Yay for chat last night! Wish I coudl have stayed longer!

Paul - Congratulations!!!! :cool1:

Kristi - I am so sorry about your SIL! I hope she gets over her embarassment so so she can let her family help her. Congrats on making lifetime!

Krista - Ooooh, I hope your leg pain eases up some. That sounds a little like the trouble I was having with my shins. That going from walking to running transition being pretty painful. Sounds like the advil and ice bath really helped out. Hmmm, you have a good idea about getting FIL involved in the deception and having him offer the marathon week for the condo. The dates don't quite work out, but I'm sure he can say he shifted his time or something. I must admit I'm a little leery getting him involved in the surprised though - because I'm not convinced that he can keep quiet about the whole thing. My DW actually has some "issues" with her father right now, and I'm not sure she's so keen on taking him up on the condo offer anyhow. Let's just say that she isn't chomping at the bit to accept - so I'm letting it run it's course and thinking that DW will decide on her own (maybe with a little nudging on my part) to not accept the condo offer.

So - I'm with you on ganging up on Terri this weekend! Go Steelers!!! :cheer2: :cheer2:

Crikey, trying to read a week's worth of posts all at once sure does take some doing!

Been busy since we got back from our vacation, but have managed to stick to the running plan. This week added a mile to the LR, doing 8 on Monday in about 1:17. Trying not to worry too much about the fact that I'm closer to 10mpm pace when I ran my first half 8 months ago closer to 9mpm, but I'm hoping that the other 13,000 or whatever people at dland speed me up a bit. :) Shorter run on the TM yesterday due to a lightning warning outside, 4mi at 0.1 in about 39 min. Tomorrow should be something similar, and then it's just 3 more long runs before Dland... Maybe 9, 10, and 10 again or something? Might actually run a 10k on the middle week, so 9, 10k, 10 might work out. For my last one I never ran more than 8, so for the race I was definitely in pain by mile 10. Hoping this one goes a bit smoother...

Race bib 1773 here, am I lowest? :)

Is there a way that you can contact him without your wife knowing -- letting him know of your plans (can he keep it quiet). I'm sure if he knew about the surprise then he would understand plus he might be able to cover the Jan 20-27th to your wife and contact her saying that he was wrong about the dates of availability. :teeth:
Get to him before DW accepts! Let him know what you've got going and conspire!
:teeth:
OK, back to reading everything I've missed...
More to follow...
