Hello everyone!

For those new to us, we're a group of people who are planning to participate in walking/running events throughout the year. Some of us are training for the 2006 Disneyland Half and for the 2007 WDW Half/Full marathons. We'll also be posting news/training for various other events throughout the year. We range from non-running beginners to triathletes. Come join us, whether you're training for an event or walking/running for fitness!

4 miles today in 55:52 for a 13:57 pace. I was hoping for better, but did a totally new route today and got a bit lost. I went outside and started walking, then turned right on Peninsular Road, kept going 'til I got to the South Point bus stop then turned left, kept on until I found the Conch Flats trail that follows along the Lake Buena Vista golf course. Oh...did I mention we sort of accidentally went up to WDW last night :teeth:
Just spent one night at OKW, but I found Lynne's secret trail from OKW to SSR. Probably would've made it to DTD, but got a bit lost in the curvy trails of SSR. Great trail...paved, empty with lots of nature (no foxes, just bunnies and birds).
We also got to tryout POTC for the first time since the refurb. Very cool! I am amazed at how life-like the new animatronics are. Jack Sparrow looks real. The movements are so fluid!

Dave...great pace, but wow, that's scary!

Cam...glad the first step with DD went well! Don't be too hard on yourself...sounds like you had a lot on your mind.

Krista...great pace on your 5K! Congrats to Stephen too! So are you going to a Bucs game on Dec 3?

Christa...I know a bit of what you mean. I forgot the Prevacid this am, so had a rock in my stomach by mile 2. For other aspects of ummmm....'running'...while you run, I take one Imodium before I go out once my mileage gets above 5 or so for long runs.

Jodi...nice pace on the 7-miler! How do you entertain yourself on the TM for that long?

Celeste...welcome back! Those tower events sound tough...I was whining about the...um...hills...at WDW this morning :teeth:

Cruella...sounds like your 5 miles were fabulous! Isn't it nice when everything gels? Maybe you found your right pace?

Dana...great pace on your 7! Hope the game went well...DH is a Jags fan.

Bill...the weather today was nice up there, being overcast and all, but the humidity was quite disturbing. :wizard: for your calf.

Sunny...great 4 mile pace! I don't think you'll have to worry about the sweepers.

I did wear my WISH shirt and new bracelet this morning. Both did fine. The bracelet lettering is actually much more visible outside. In fact, it's very similar in color and visibility to the VMK bracelets they had at MK today. If anyone's still interested, there's plenty available so check out the bracelet thread or PM me for info!

Do we want to chat again this week?

Good training everyone!

Hey everyone!

I never made it to check in last week - we went camping for the first time! We actually had a great time, the three kids LOVED it! I got to swim in Lake Huron which was great prep for the tris.

I ran today - in my WISH shirt, too! Whenever I get into an "I can't do this, I will be too slow, etc." mood, my DH dangles the shirt next to me. :rotfl: That always cracks me and makes me smile!

I got new "real" running shoes last night and tried them out today. Also got my Body Glide and Marathoning for Mortals book. Had to laugh when I got the part about Type A personalitys and starting. Yes, this is me... ;)

I am down to three weeks from today for my first tri. I have jitters about it already!

That is all from me - hope you all are doing well!

Bekah

Just checking in quickly to post my LR results from earlier today. I just did a LR of 10.02 on Thursday and today I did it a few better by going just over 12.5.

Unfortunately I left my Garmin at home (don't you just hate when that happens? ) and I had to add everything up from memory for part of my course and just counted laps for the rest. I do know that my first 5.225 miles were finished in just about 58 or 59 minutes.

I will be taking a rest day tomorrow. My Hams are smoked! :rotfl:

Happy Training!
:grouphug:

Sunny you are in my thoughts.

Howard

CHAT...... I'll be there! :moped:.....hope to see everyone on Wednesday night :thumbsup2

HI!

can i play?

ok the girls are going back to school monday so i may have a little time here and there! yikes! the next two weeks are very busy for me and that may not slow down until October when my kitchen will be done -- but i'm feeling ready to refocus down the 1/2 marathon mindtrail

right now i'm needing to concentrate on losing about 10 pounds -- that will make my jan trip so much more enjoyable, including the 1/2. i have my WISH shirt and it's inspiring me too. so my goal is 3 sessions of interval cardio during the week and then a long walk on the weekend (6 miles at present)

i may need a walking partner -- my email buddies, well two have financial burdens that may inhibit their trip, and my Mom is struggling with medical issues. so -- i will admit that i'm bummed about all this -- we all did the only other WDW i have done in 2003 -- for the record i'm a walker and usually maintain just over 14 min/mile. anyone else??

ok I am so tired today I just don't think I can run. I can not believ that I just slept eight hours when I am still this tired!

Cam - Hang in there, it sounds like you are going through one of life's most stressful events so don't be hard on yourself if there isn't energy left over.

Those WISH tshirts sound magical! Way to go team!

Same thing happens to me - the more sleep that I get, the more tired I am. I'm usually good with 5 1/2 or 6 hours of sleep. Although, with training coming up I don't think I will be pulling a lot of that.

Good morning all! I have decided to lurk less (I'm learning so much!) and post more to make me accountable for my training.

Yesterday I went the furthest I ever have: 5 miles on the treadmill for a total of 60 minutes, averaging 12 min/mile. I walked the first 5 minutes for warm up, but other than a two minute walk break about 3 miles in, I ran the whole time. It felt really good. Prior to this, the longest I've run is 4 miles.

The only thing I am worried about is that this is all treadmill work, and not on actual pavement. It is so hot and humid down here, when I try to run, my breathing is all messed up. So, for those of you who live in similar conditions, what do you do? Should I sacrifice some distance to run outside occasionally in this weather, or keep doing what I'm doing through the heat/humidity and focus on increasing my distance on the treadmill. I almost feel like I am cheating by using the treadmill.

Howard - Your runs amaze me! A long run on Thurs of over 10 and then 12.5 two days later? All I can say is wow!

Cecilia - You did 5 miles yesterday, so you deserve a rest day if you feel like it!

Bekah - Good luck training for your tri! What kind of shoes did you end up getting?

I am not sure if I am going to rest today or get in another run. I feel great and could stand to burn some calories. Last night my DH and I went to a movie (Little Miss Sunshine - everyone should go see this!) and then out for Mexican food. I think I consumed more calories last night than I have all last week. So good at the time, but I am just kicking myself this morning!

Sound like a great run to me :goodvibes

Oh - I put the T.V. on and they had a marathon of psych, so I was watching that and then you're mind kind of wonders too; I start to think how nice it is going to be running through Disney World. It really wasn't that hard to stay entertained....but I think if it was more than 7 miles, I'd lose it

Do we want to chat again this week
I'd love to, which day did you do this last week?

Mel - Well, considering it was a pre-season game I can't complain to much about the loss. Tack onto that the fact that I probably had one too many beers the experience was overall enjoyable!! Thankfully, I was smart enough last night to drink a big ole glass of water and take some excedrin migraine to prevent a hang over this morning, but I can definately feel the lack of hydration in my body right now. I make a point not to run the day after a football game specifically for this reason!! I can't believe you got to go to WDW last night! I am so jealous, we have until Sept. 29th before we get to go back. I am jonesin' for a Disney trip!!

I missed Chat last week because I had to meet some family from out of town, but I would LOVE to get together for a chat this week.

Bekah - Those new "real" running shoes will make a world of difference. I always love it when I get a new pair!!

ohMom - You can definately play. Now that my oldest is in School it is much easier to get out and get a run in.

Cecilia - I know how you feel. After yesterday's run and last nights game, and waking up at 7am with Lucas (22mos) I am completely BEAT!!

Houstonmouse - I think it's a wonderful idea to lurk less. Sometimes knowing that I need to be posting here is the only thing that keeps me going. I don't know how some of you run on the Treadmill, I have never been able to do that for any type of long distance. Then again I can't run around a track for that long of a distance either I get so bored. I live in N. Florida so I know how you feel about the heat and humidity. I make a point to not start a run after 9am, because any later than that and it just gets too darn hot.

Dana

I haven't had a chance to catch up on the last few days of last week's post. I must go back and see what is happening with Sunny.

I ran 5 miles on the treadmill yesterday. I went back to run3/walk2. The first 2 miles were so hard. After that, I got into a groove and had no problems. My left shoulder and left side of my back hurt yesterday after the run and still hurt a little this morning. My legs feel great. I am back on track for the DL 1/2, which is only 4 weeks from today!

Total drive by-- I'll be back to check up on you all this evening ;)

Yesterday: 65 minutes arc trainer and 1 hour in the pool with DS, mostly treading water. But DS did at least 10 full laps! I'm amazed at how his swimming has improved. I tried a little DWR without a flotation device. Very hard and obvious I need a fd to keep good vertical position, so I ordered on last night :Pinkbounc

Unfortunately, swimming isn't the wonderful zero-pain exercise one might think it would be for my condition. But I'm hopeful about DWR (tx again, Dave)

Today I did a 4.1 mile walk in 54 minutes. I did a couple of little speed walk/wog intervals. I'm seeing how fast I can get with my feet not leaving the ground and my knees not bending more than about 30 deg! It feels very low impact, I'll just have to see how it affects other body parts.

Sunny
DWR? Oh, you must mean SWOGGING! pirate: Arrrrrrr, let's get the terminology right matey! ;) Seriously, I hope it helps for you Sunny. Great job on the wogging. Don't hurt yourself. We're thinking of you!

HoustonMouse ~ Thank you for the comments.

The LR's aren't that tough and I took every advantage of mixing in some fast walking with my running. I ran the first 5 miles or so hitting a 9 or better per minute pace on the trail. After that, I slowed it down a bit circling the cinder 1.125 mile track. I walked a bit, ran a lap or two, walked some more, etc. I am a little sore today but not too bad at all.

I think I am ready for the DL half next month. I can only get in better condition between now and then. However getting in the miles between now and then will be tough with a new part-time job starting and full-time graduate school. My job begins on Wednesday and classes start the following Monday.

Happy training everyone! :grouphug:

Howard

Well, we moved my DD off to college on Friday, and DS off to his college yesterday. I started off our first day as empty nesters by hitting a LR. Last week, I did 10 miles, so I decided to shoot for 11 today. It was overcast when I started, but the sun started to come out intermittently during the run. All in all, conditions were pretty good, and I completed the 11 miles, running just over 10 min/mile.

I'm feeling pretty well about my progress, and signed up to run my first 1/2M in early October. Now I'm wondering if I started my training too early, or increased my LR's too soon. I'm still over 4 months from the Disney 1/2M, and I hope I haven't peaked too soon. I'll have to avoid letting down between October and January.

Keep up the great worke everyone. :Pinkbounc

Hi everyone!

I've been a bit of a slug since my LR of 8 miles on Tuesday. But my busy season at work is winding down and I hope to take the next 2 weeks to put in a lot of final training for the DL 1/2. Then I'll taper for the next 2 weeks.

For all you experts I have a question about the taper. How long should it be if I'm not a "speed demon"? I'm in the 13-14 mpm range (depending on how I feel). I was going to continue with my LR's though Labor Day and then cut back and do mostly shorter runs of 2-3 miles, but do more cross training. I figured the last couple days before the race would be spent just walking around DL. Does this sound okay or should I de something different?

Celeste - We have a type of tower event here in Philly, also. I've been interested in it, but haven't yet done it.

Howard and Denny- Great Runs!

HoustonMouse - I would say to try to run on the pavement occassionally to get your body used to it. My times tend to slow a little when I'm not running on the track. I do a lot of my running on the track (softer surface saves my legs), but will try to get out on the road at least 1-2 times a week. I usually try to do anywhere between 4-10 miles on the road.

Sunny - Glad to see you were able to do some type of workout. Just be careful. We don't want you to hurt yourself any further.

Terri

Mel- I remember the hills at WDW, even on the half- they weren't that fun. :teeth:

Terri- I'll let you know how the tower events work out.

Has anyone done anything like that before?

I am going to the gym after I get out of the hosptial at 3pm.

Went to a Toby Keith concert, so didn't get much sleep, but still did 1 mile, took me 17 minutes...

I'm reading a lot about "gels"...anyone shed some light on these? Should I be using them? What kind? How often?

Once again, I am being a slug. I really don't know what is wrong with me. I didn't get out to wog Friday, or yesterday.

I really was all gung-ho to do my 8 miler this morning. That is, until I decided to do a little too much :drinking1 yesterday afternoon/evening. So, I was doing some of  while Chad did this :drive: on some really windy roads all the way home.

(so no one think I am some lush, I very rarely drink. Usually only on vacation or something)

I am doing ok today, I just know there is no way in heck I can go walk 8 miles! I get yucky-feeling just walking around the house right now.

So, regardless of my not-so-smart escapades last night - I am still off track with this training. Disneyland is 4 weeks away! :scared1: I need some Evil Queen action on my butt! :teeth:

I SWEAR I am doing that 8 miler tomorrow! Chad is off work M-F this week, so I have NO excuse for not sticking to my schedule this week.
