Wk of April 20 - WISH Walking/Running Club

Frank

Regarding the group room block, that's something we've looked into in the past. The rates are similar to AP/FL resident rates. You only need 10 rooms for the block which can be split among multiple resorts. You need one person to hold the contract (and be responsible!) but everyone can make their own reservations and payment. It's doable any year...we've just never had enough people that wanted to book rooms through the block. I think many of us are DVC, AP or FL residents and just didn't need it, but it could certainly be done for this year if someone wants to take the lead and hold the contract for the block.

Krista...late in pregnancy with Kaley, my stomach was often lopsided. She was usually on one side or the other then you could watch her rollover to the other side. It was just a bit creepy.

So we're talking about smoked pork, soft chewy cookies and hot, sweet ice cream...are we all tapering for something?

Kevin

Have a safe and quick trip home. I have a firm rule that any time I'm at WDW with one of our military personnel, I offer any cool beverage, preferably fermented or distilled, my treat. Unfortunately Vic and WWDave, so far, have graciously declined. The offer stands for you then I see you next.

(also posted on the Minnie Running thread)

I coming to MINNIE WEEKEND and running in the Minnie 15K! :cool1:  :dance3: :cheer2:

Thanks to the persuasion of Charlie (Judy's DH), yes - yet again... look at my signature and Craig (Calcio). Both of which have made me offers I can't refuse.

I have not seriously trained for this, I have maybe run a total of 6.5 miles since completing the Goofy in January. I have no hopes of getting a good time, but I hope to run somewhere around 10:30 to 11:00 miles.

I am finishing up graduate school and have no (sane) reason to be coming down for this. However my wonderful DW (Cam   :flower3: ) said we'd make it work... so here I come!

See everyone there!

Hey everyone! Just peaking in. I haven't been on this thread in ages and I miss hearing about your guys. :( My hectic schedule is just about to come to an end soon and I hope to join in the fun here once again. :goodvibes

Jeff, I just want to let you know that I'll be thinking about you and your friend, Captain Randy Guzman this weekend at the OKC Memorial Half. I hear that the memorial service before the race is quite inspirational and uplifting. I'm looking forward to it.

In a couple of weekends I'll be seeing many of you at the Minnie. I'm looking forward to the event even though I've let myself get out-of-shape since the marathon and not very prepared. ALL I need is to just stay 1 step ahead of the sweepers. :scared:

Oh, and the weekend after, I'll be attending a running clinic hosted by Jeff Galloway. Maybe he can kick me in the rear and get me moving again. Has anyone here attended one of his clinics before?

Hope everyone is doing well. Have a good week!

Howard! We all are so excited you will be joining us for Minnie Weekend! We needed more eye candy. ;) This is going to be so much fun! :cool1:

Heather - I think there will be plenty of eye candy there already. :flower3:

I'll try not to distract many people with my grotesque ugliness.

I know it will be fun! I have to go through H-e-double toothpicks before and after to finish up the semester, but it will be worth it.

Miss you!

Holy cow, you leave the board for a day and it all goes crazy!

All I’ll say is that without WISH, there’s no way that I’d be here, actually planning to run at all. I would have fizzled out before I ever really got started. I’ve never been an athlete, and still have plenty of days where I think that I’ll never be able to do this. But then I come here and y’all are all so encouraging that I know I WILL be able to do it.

OK, now I’ll try to catch up as best I can.

Cosi Bella – :welcome: Oooh, a Disney wedding, how exciting!

Leana – So glad to hear that the chiro visit helped!

Carol – Glad to hear you’re taking a rest. Hope that 8-miler goes well this weekend. How fun to be at AK’s 10th Anniversary!

Debra – Mmm, Ben and Jerry’s. I LOVE their Cherry Garcia, but I can’t keep it in the house, or I’ll eat the entire container in one sitting. See, I was thinking that we really should take a trip to DL with the baby before attempting WDW. We’ve been to DL a million times, so we’re really comfortable there, and perhaps the smaller park wouldn’t be quite as overstimulating to Sean? I’m about thisclose to making reservations.

And Happy Birthday to DOOD! How did those cookies turn out?

Erica – Good to see you! Hope your recovery is going well. :wizard:

Kim – Welcome! You ran the Half while pregnant? I’m in awe. We planned to run the DL Half last year, but I decided not to race due to pregnancy, so now we’re trying to decide which race will be our first Half Marathon later on this year.

Allie – Glad you’re enjoying that Garmin.

Mel – WTG on the 4-miler!

Allyson – Glad your C25K is going well!

Cecilia –

Kevin – Hey there! Good to see you!

Stacie – Wow, that’s an awesome story about your sis. Good for her!

Cam – How’s the vow renewal planning going?

Krista – YAY for visible baby movements!! So, do we get to see any of these scrapbook pages you’ve been working on? Hey, you might get lucky – my belly button never popped. Maybe yours won’t, either!

Patty – Congrats on W1D2!

Kevin/Z – YAY!! So glad that you’re coming home!!

Maura – Glad you went and got that leg massage. I hope it helps and that your legs will feel a million times better!

Howard – Good to see you! I can’t believe you’re nearly done with school already. Have fun at the Minnie!

Sorry to those I missed!

Jeff, I just want to let you know that I'll be thinking about you and your friend, Captain Randy Guzman this weekend at the OKC Memorial Half. I hear that the memorial service before the race is quite inspirational and uplifting. I'm looking forward to it.

Susie, you have a great race, and thanks from the family and friends of Randy. It's very touching that you and Steff are doing this race. I will get up there again someday to run the memorial race. I was last there at the 9 year anniversary.

Have a fun time!

Last post of the day...

I took the Princesses to the beach, so #1 could X-train for her triathlon in just 10 days. She swam and ran, but skipped the biking since we rode last weekend.

Anyways, I couldn't decide which of these two photos is more breath taking, so I posted both. :rotfl2::laughing::rotfl:

Susie - I went to hear Jeff last year and immediately joined the local Galloway group. He's entertaining and inspiring at the same time! I'll actually be at the local Galloway kickoff clinic with Jeff while all of you are at Minnie.

Howard - Hooray for Minnie! I know Cam is happy.

Craig - I forgot to add last night, but I agree with Mel. You, peripheral? Not in any sense of the word. Your posts are the highlight of the week, and definitely one of my motivations. Integral definitely!

Jackie

Greetings TEAM: OK, I need to get back to my roots. I'm sorry I haven't posted in so long. My running has been sporadic, and my life has been crazy. Things have been turning around for me on the job front, and I'm interviewing for a new full time position at a neighboring college today (I actually had part of the interview yesterday). I jumped in here though because I definitely want to be a part of any discussion of where WISH is going in the future. I love this team, and it has been a very big part of my life.

HolyWISHpost batman...out of control...I just wanted to post my WO...

I had about a 12 hour day of counseling but did sneak over to the YMCA for a session with the dreadmill. It was raining (even though the weatherman said it wasn't) so I opted for indoors. Should have taken my chances outside. The run was crappy. Planned to do 5 but stopped at 3 (I NEVER cut a run short :headache: ). I was not in pain but noticed I was sweating more than normal. Around mile 2.85 I noticed I was lightheaded. I did not want to fly off the back of the DM so I bagged the run.
Did 3 in 24.36 min. I blame stress. Will go to the trails today and tri again b/4 work.

 to everyone feeling bad.

WTG Krista on feeling the baby move.

David Cook...Oh Yeah baby!

Yes I have a panda and all the WISH friends in my head, pushing me to do what I never thought I could.:cheer2: Thanks guys!

Good morning team, just wanted to check in to say hi, and thank you for the welcome back.

2009 Marathon will be my first full and I am very excited. I might even get a cool tat like Vic's LOVE IT!!!!!

DAve - Soo good to see you! Seeing you extra pixie dust today!!!! :wizard: :wizard: :wizard:

Craig - Peripheral member? I have always thought of you as our coach and figured you just had your fave running clothes and didn't want to stray. :confused3

Debra - I rested by going to dinenr with friends. WHile I ate way more than even the pg one, I was very healthy. FOrgive me for bnot resting properly with ice cream. ;) Wax on, wax off...rotfl! At package pickup for MArtian, dh adn I would sometimes get questions that we didn;'t know teh answer to and had to refer tehm elsewhere. After they were gone, we'd look at each other adn say "FIrst time you, first time me." BTW, since when is core adn light weights and stretching rest?

ZKevin - Safe travels home!

Solo - So good to see you!!! So sorry about teh dating pool. Got to be better than W. MI, though, yes? :grouphug:

Christa - Hope yu are feeling better today adnnot coming down with something. :wizard:

Mel - The best thing about doing races a mnonth a prat is a taper every month! :rotfl:

To Jackie adn ANgie and all of those who said they've never finished what tehy started: That is not the way I have ever seen you adn it shockes me to hear you say that. Just thought you'd like to know that the women I see are much more determined and courageous than teh people you see in teh mirror. A WISHer once shared this with me and I hope she doesn't mind me sharing.

TXBelle said:
You know what I WISH friends? I WISH that when we look in the mirror we could see what the rest of us see in each other. We are all beautiful, strong, loving, inspirational and accomplished women. But when we look in the mirror, I think most of us see flawed, weak, pudgy, and inferior girls. We need to see who we really are and celebrate our greatness.

Craig - Peripheral member? I have always thought of you as our coach and figured you just had your fave running clothes and didn't want to stray. :confused3

ITA. I have never thought of you as a peripheral member. I figured you were like me, and just weren't comfortable running in the WISH gear. (not comfortable as in it irritates or chafes or something, not the other uncomfortable). You are a constant face (name) on this board, and are wonderful about supporting everyone. I would not have EVER thought to call you peripheral. Maybe Key Member is more like it!!

Dana

Kevin - CONGRATS!! What great news!!

Maura, how cool is that about your MT? Definitely good karma for sure!

Martha, that is such a great story about the CMs applauding you!! I got goosebumps!

Debra, ooooh - team pressure!! You know how to dish it out, girl! ;) I don't blame you for wanting to stay drama free. I (thankfully) cut out the drama-mongers in my life a long time ago!

OhioKim, hello and welcome!! Always great to have another Buckeye!

Kira, keep it up, the trails will get easier!!

Frank, are you trying to kill me? :rotfl: Seriously though, that zoo hill is infamous! I don't think I'm there yet, but thanks for the suggestion! I did know about Mayor DePiero's 5k but we'll be in WDW then. Actually, one of my good friends placed 1st in her age div in that race last year.

Carrie, I LOVE that quote!! So very true...

Me.. yesterday was XT day so I did the recumbent and then went home and decided to use up the leftover frozen shrimp so I went all Paula Deen and made beer battered shrimp and onion rings. Oh so healthy! We also watched the first Live Aid dvd.. that was such a blast from the past.. back in the days when Phil Collins still had hair!

Just checking in for the day.

Kevin/Z--WOO HOO!!!!! :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: Lots of :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: for safe travels home!!

Craig--If you are a peripheral part of the Wish team, then I'm Heidi Klum! You are a very integral and valuable part of our team and I, for one, am so glad and thankful that you are here!

TX Ang--I may or may not have stayed up until almost midnight working on my scrapbook last night. :rolleyes1 The ideas were flowing and I didn't want to go to bed! I have one more page to scrap of the marathon and then I will post pics of the Expo and marathon portion I've done so far. Have you booked your DL trip yet? ;)

Debra--Methinks you don't know what the word "rest" means. ;) To me rest is laying on the couch and watching television all night maybe with a bowl of ice cream or cereal.

Kristi--I was thinking last night about and your running slump and it reminded me that in August I went through a pretty bad running slump where I didn't want to do anything and ended up not running the Columbus marathon that I planned on running. And then I got to thinking that 3 months after the start of my slump, I got pregnant. :thumbsup2

Dave--I am so glad that you popped in. I've been thinking a lot about you lately and wondering how you are doing. Major :wizard: for today and for everything that's going on. We miss you!!

Howard--Yay for Minnie!!!! I think Cam is the best, but I know you know that. :)

Kevin/Solo--So good to see you back here!!

Kim--I didn't realize you were new to the area. Where did you move from? And I can't believe you ran a half pregnant. :worship: I was signed up to run the half this past January, but had to skip it as I was 10 weeks pregnant and my doctor didn't want me to.

Christa--Sorry that your run stunk. :wizard: for a better run today!

Carrie--I love that quote!!!!!!! I think that needs to be tattooed on every young girls hand so they are reminded again and again just how beautiful and strong they are. It made me think of something one of my girls in the Sunday School class I teach said. They are 2nd graders and I passed out candy to people who brought their Bible or offering, she said, "I don't want a piece, it will make me fat". A 2nd grader worrying about getting "fat"!!! I told her I never want to hear that come out of her mouth or anyone else mouth ever again.

Mel--I've noticed that Carter pretty much stays on the left side of my body, so I will definitely be lopsided when he gets bigger.

Scott--

I'd love to sit and chat, but today is my Friday and I have a lot to get done before 5:00. I'll be back later!!

Krista

Cosi Bella - FItting in the runs are hard. Once you make the time, though, you just get used to it after a while. I miss my SAturday runs now if I don't get tehm in. Trust, those were the hardest fro me to fit in and I never thoguth I'd miss them. Do you have a SNap FItness? FOr a gym, they are pretty reasonable. Then again, mnay could justify teh cost of a TM if that's all you would use teh gym for. We do our runs outsides as much as possible, but that gets hard int eh winter. Any chance you could get your fiance to run with you? If not, please make sure you find a safe place to run adn take any necessary precautions (pepper sray, ear phones tha tlet you hear teh surroundings, etc)

Thank you for the great advice! I am seriously considering investing in a tm for the days I can not run outside. I just HATE tms! I feel like a hamster running on a wheel trapped in a cage! Its terrible. BUT, if I must, I WILL! I will MOST certainly be safe when running. My neighborhood is terrifically safe and just last night on my way home from work I mapped out a route that is 1.5 miles long... if i run that loop a few times I can get in some serious miles every day! I will be looking online today for pepper spray though, as you just never know in this crazy world. Dogs scare the crap out of me too! and I've had some scary close calls with some nasty dogs, so I'm not taking any chances! I can usually get my fiance to rollerblade along side me when the weather is nice. Even though I'm afraid of dogs, sometimes I wish I had a nice big one to run with for protection. Thanks again for the advice!!! :)

curiouser, kzmarathon, RedDragon, MouseDogMom, TXAng- thanks for the welcome wishes!! I feel SO incredibly welcome here and its only been a couple of days! Everyone here is so nice, I'm so glad I found a huge group of people who love running as much as me!!

Cosi Bella--So glad that you are able to hook up with a charity group and run the half that way. It stinks that it filled up so fast this year! Congrats again on your upcoming wedding and for getting back into running. I hear ya on finding time to train. I'm not really training right now (I'm 5 months pregnant), but I've run 4 half marathons and 1 full, plus I'm running the half in January, so I know how hard it is. I do all of my training on my own, my husband Stephen (skfulkers on the boards) runs too, but we run at different paces, so we never train together. I run almost exclusively in my neighborhood, so there is a since of safety there, plus I take my dog with me, so that helps. As far as getting the runs in, what helps me is planning out a schedule and hanging somewhere I see it all the time, so I know I have to get my runs whether it's right after work outside or later in the evening on the treadmill. I hope that your fiance is supportive of your running and training, it's a thousand times easier when your SO is on board with the training and understands. Let us know if you need any help!

I know, I wish that I could have registered through Disney for the half, I was amazed that when I looked into it a few weeks ago that it was already closed. I'm extremely nervous about running for a charity. I looked into some of the ones listed on Disney's website, and they all require you to raise AT LEAST $1,200 dollars (that was the lowest one I saw). I just don't think that I could do that. Would it be terrible of me to register for the race through a company like Anthony Travel!?!? I feel like I would be copping out and cheating! :( This is really upsetting. I could still raise money on my own and then make a donation to a charity after the race! This is stressful. I haven't picked a charity yet because I really don't think I'd be able to raise THAT much money only because of the crappy economy and peoples limited funds! What to do, what to do. I am going to make a post of my running plans, but I really do need help! I am not sure what goals to set for myself in order to be able to complete the 13.1 miles on race day... more to come. Thanks for the help and words of advice and encouragement! it is so greatly appreciated!!:)

Cosi Bella - :welcome: :welcome: If you are in the Waterbury area check out RetroFitness. Kareneast (DW) and I belong to one in NJ. It runs $20.00 a month. I think we paid a $50 join-up fee. Only a 1 year contract and we were able to transfer to the new one that opened 6 miles from our house. Their website is http://www.retrofitness.net.

John

Thanks John! I am near the waterbury area and I will definitely check out RetroFitness! thanks for the link.! :)

Cosi Bella: What a great background on "Why (You) Love Running." I think how people fit running into their schedules differs person to person. I'm a morning person, myself, and have access to a TM in the dark/safety/rainy weather issues and to a DH who nags me into getting up. Other people are more self-motivated, like you sound. We do invest in the gym for the TM access, but also for the weight training & XT opportunities. I've found that the expense "forces" us to try XT in order to get our money's worth--in turn, I'm a stronger person & (hopefully) a better runner. Like I said, everyone is different, so let us know what works for you!

Thanks!! :cool2: I'm really considering buying a treadmill when the fall rolls around so that I can continue to run and train. Its just those dang treadmills are so constricting for me! Ahh, i hate it. I will have to make due though. I am extremely self motivated (although it ALWAYS helps to have a friend say "You can do it!") so I see no problem reaching my end goal... I just think I really need some help in the beginning to get a training schedule and some motivation/encouragement that I really can run 13.1 miles! It doesn't seem long, but I'm sure once I'm out there its going to seem like forever! :goodvibes

OK, and now down to the nitty gritty:

Training. Here is what I know I want to start out with:

Since I have been out of running for a while, I want to start slow. BUT, I know my body and I know I can get into shape quickly. I'm thinking of running three miles a day, very easy... maybe some walking mixed in there. That's going to be the easy part. I hope to get back into my old form of running 5 miles a day in about a month. I know from past experience I can do this! that's my goal for the next four weeks. Get there. Or close...

After that, I'm stumped! I want to do this healthily, and safely. I DO NOT want to get injured, so my question to you all is: what sort of goals (distance wise) should I be setting up for myself over the next eight months so that on race day, I can do this half marathon? Should I set goals such as: 8 miles by a certain month, 10 miles by a certain month, and 13 miles by the end? How often should you do a "long" run, when should I first try 13 miles, or should I not try it at all and save it for the race day?? Oh geez, what did I get myself into?? Will I be able to do this!?! I'm young, so I have that going for me, and not overweight, so that's a plus too! no bad knees (knock on wood) or foot problems (again, knock on wood), so really the only hurdles I face are the actual training goals themselves. Any advice/help is GREATLY appreciated! Thanks for listening everyone!! I'm going to do a google search now for "marathon training" and see what I can come up with. :thumbsup2
