Wk of April 20 - WISH Walking/Running Club

I got her some CD's and a DVD of a band that she likes. They were actually on Fox's America's Top Band and made it to the finals.
For a minute there I thought she was after my boyfriend Johnny Goo - but he was a judge, so it's all good. ;) Which band did she like? I thought the Clark Brothers were fabulous!

Lynnda seems appeased since she ate her cake with the frosting she likes. However it was one way that she could exactly what she wanted and not have someone (namely me) screw it up.
:lmao:

I have yoga on deck for tonight. :thumbsup2
Tomorrow I am going to be 'sick' and take Zachary on his field trip.
I can barely handle one 4-year-old. ;) This is going to be very interesting... :rotfl:

The band was Denver and the Mile High Orchestra. They happened to be in concert here last week and we were able to see them.

I just want to send :goodvibes :goodvibes :goodvibes to all my very good WISH friends. I apologize for responding to things that I should have just let go adn inciting more attacks to my precious WISHers. I just feel liek someone hurt all of my closest friends. People who were there for me no matter if I was a ranting lunatic or down at teh end of my rope. I don't think outsiders realize that helping people to get to a race adn through a race is not just about that. It's about helping people achieve teh unachievable and accomplish dreams that they didn't daredream about before WIHS. It's a life change. As I said often after my first marathon, I feel like training the marathon didn't just train me for teh race, it trained me to take my life one step at a time adn I can get through anything (job crises, family illness, etc..). Thank you to everyone who's helped me realize that I can take whatever comes at me (even if I do have to vent/whine about it sometimes. ;) ).

Last night, I realized that one person cannot take WISH away and I shoudl not let it get to me. (Thank you yoga). So, I've always heard that there's an ignore button to keep unwanted posts off my screen. I'm going to find that and get back to what WISH is about.

Mel - DOn't you dare think you opened a can of worms. We need to discuss teh structure you brought up further. One thing is not related to the other thing. I really think we need to look into copy right too. :grouphug:

Jeff - WHat can I say? If one WISHer should hate me, it's you. ANd what do you do? You see I'm upset and send me the nicest PM. You have true WISH spirit! :goodvibes

Debra - Rest adn ice cream? Are you sure it's better than epsom salt??? :rotfl2: Right back at you on the compliments! You make me smile and keep me and my spine in line. ;) :goodvibes

Leana - You know not racing in a shirt does not negate your being a true WISHer, right????? :grouphug: :grouphug:

Vic - You have a way with words. You are right, our shirts speak volumes. :goodvibes

OK, my brain overfloweth. Huge thanks to all my WISH friends fro all that you do for everyone! :goodvibes :grouphug:

OK, did 75 min of yoga last night. Timing was good. :rotfl:

Got out early and did W4,D5 (we are doing this week again) of the C25K and I made it! Life is good!

Question for those that have run a Half before....thinking ahead to January. After the race, do you have the energy to go to a park later that day? Or are you totally wiped out? I just don't know what to expect from this?

Allyson

I'm going out for a 6 mile run after work (yeah, I'm still here slaving away). Today is a WISH dedicated run to everyone. I'll be sure to take in the sunset, ocean, and beach sights for all of you. Sigh, someone's gotta do it, so I'll sacrafice for all of you. :rotfl2: Darn, I forgot the camera at home.

Thank you for your sacrifice. Now if you would just open a WISH exclusive B,B&T we would be set (Bed, Breakfast,& Training run tours)

Vic, I'll have one of those Beers if you have some left. We are way overdue some beer laps around Epcot.
Beer Laps?! I think walkers definately have an advantage when doing beer laps. But I could be a walker. Heck, two beers and I could be a crawler but its hard to hold your beer and crawl.

About me today: I have decided not to run the MCM this year. I chose that race because it was close to my Dad and he would finally get to see me run a race for him. But Dad won't be here to see it. Acepting that has been hard and and I just think it would be too much this year. Instead I am going to concentrate all my training on Goofy. TNT is begging me to work with them this winter season and since I am going to Disney already, I think I will.

Cecilia

Kikm - FOrgive me. I forgot to say Welcome!!! Look froward to hearing more about your training!

Cecelia -

Allyson - You will probably want nothing more than to crawl in your bed after the race. However, if you keep going, you will get your second wind. Take a cold tub or soak your legs in a pool for a bit and get going again. Your body will thank you. Trust me, stopping is the worst thing you can do. You will likely be a bit slow, but if you stop, starting again will bepainful, trust me. ;)

Cecilia:  TNT is lucky to have you!

Bill: The smoking po...pork thing I have to admit that I did a double take on your post! :rotfl: That's what happens with speed reading!!! And oh my...Kindergarden already *sniff* I remember the day my now DD10 went to Kindergarden and I followed her bus to school in my car...bawling my eyes out. I may have done that for my 2nd DD too LOL! :rolleyes1

Craig: I think I told Scott the other day that the only way I'm going to qualify for Boston is if I keep running until I'm 80. Sounds like we all may be there for the Senior WiSH trip to the Boston Marathon. Wheelchairs will be awaiting us at the finish!

American Idol: OMG..David Cook can SING boy. He's my favorite Idol contestant ever. Last night sealed the deal...that guy is very talented.

For me today....babysitting 5 month old! GOing to take all the kids for a walk at the park. Later I will get my 5 Miler in! :thumbsup2 Have a great day everyone!!! :sunny:

Still looking for Dr Solo.....Kevin, where the heck are you??? :confused3 You're still coming, right???

:rolleyes1

You know, I'm not quite sure what it is about me, but it seems like every time I get tracked down there's some type of enormous drama that seems to show up here at the same time?? Is it just me?!?!

Anyhow, Hi There Friends!!!

I know I haven't been around the past couple months.... but LTO in a HUGE way around these parts.... Let's see: There was running a beach resort in the height of high season, covering the Winter Party and Winter Music Festival for my other job, getting the flu and pretty much trying to stay sane. But now that the season is over, I'm back to running and back to WISHing!!

(Oh, and by the way....whomever said that getting back in to the dating pool would be fun.... liars, all of them....)

I promise to catch up with everything on here later... sounds like it's been an interesting time as everyone approaches Minnie.... but I did want to put this in....

Cam's right..... For those of us that have been around the block (Or "World" as it may be), this really is a family. A family that will support you in finishing a Goofy (untrained!) even though you've been missing for months. A family that will be there when you are struggling through training and want to give up. A family that will literally grab you by the arm to include you in a Half Marathon corral. A family that will really, truly send their best wishes when you have to move halfway across the country last minute.
It's something I would not give up for the world.

So, while I'm going to think about ways to make this group better.... I think it's just great right now. So long as the group would retain the same "vibe", the same attitude and the same goals, then I wear my status as that kid brother who seems to disappear and pop up at random intervals as a badge of honor.

And I suppose if I have learned nothing from reading this weeks thread, it's how much I miss talking with my family.....

More updatey stuff later, I promise....

All my best to everyone!
Kevin :earsboy:

You are able to change the HR option later if you want to. It is under one of the menus. I don't have mine with me right now so I can't give detailed instructions but I will look later.

Bill, I just went under the HR Option, and changed it from Based on Max, to Custom. Does that customize it to my information (i.e. my age, gender, and weight)? Basically, did I do it right? :confused3

Also, how do I set for interval training? You can answer me in a PM, instead of clogging up this thread. :)

Can I just say I LOVE David Cook! LOVE HIM! I loved him even when he had bad hair!:lovestruc

Thank you! That is good to know. My hope in my head was that after going back to the hotel, taking a tub and maybe relaxing a bit (this might be a bad idea it sounds like though) that we could go to MK. I can't be at Disney and not go to the Magic Kingdom!

Good Morning WISHers!!!

:welcome: Cosi Bella  and Kim!!!

Amy...Have fun w/ your neice today! :cutie: Hope your 5 miler goes well!

Cecilia...I LOVE your idea of the BB&T in HI!!! Oh, Jeff....:rolleyes1

Yay Allsyon! Great job getting that C25K in. I'm doing the 1/2 in January. My first one. I really hope I'm not wiped out too much! :goodvibes

Kristi...Hope you have fun on the field trip!

 Carrie. 75 min of Yoga! Good job girl!

Bill...Glad Linda enjoyed her cake. Yum! I need some cake too!

HI Kevin! Glad you're back!

I have a 5 miler on tap for today too. I have been "resting" since Sunday! WTO/LTO... Let's hope that 5 miler treats me ok.

I just wanted to share a quick story w/ you guys. Some of you "know" my sister Susan (Larry's girl). She NEVER posts here on the weekly thread, but does keep a WISH journal and occassionally posts in a few other threads. She has many health problems(PCOS, Celiac, osteo-arthritis, diabetes...) and is very overweight. This is something she has battled her entire life. This year she has made leaps and bounds in getting better. She still has a long way to go, but just a year ago she could not get ready for work without having to rest. She would take a shower and then have rest for about 15 min before she could finish getting dressed, makeup, hair... and heading off to work. She has now progressed to not only being able to get ready for work and go to work, but also to try to exercise. She is going to attempt her 1st 5K at the Minnie Weekend in just one week and 3 days!!! This is HUGE for her. Because of the WISH journal she has been keeping and the support of various folks, it has helped her tremendously. The DLF > DNF >> DNS is HUGE for her. She totally feels that even if he does not finish the 5K, that having the courage to start is such a great accomplishment for her. I know that on her bad days she thinks of WISH and that helps her keep going on her walks. I just wanted to share how the message on the back of that shirt and what the WISH team as a whole stands for has greatly helped her. We are both super excited to be meeting some of you all next weekend along w/ our DH's and parents!

Oh, and I just wanted to add that not only is she doing her first 5K, but her DH decided last minute to try and my 64 yr old mother and 73 yr old year father are also attempting their first 5K at the Minnie. I'm not one to say by any means that I am inspiring, but by deciding to get active myself back in Sept and do my first 5K at WDW this past January and then continue with more races and fitness goals, I've now involved(highly pressured! lol!) my sister and my parents to try their first race. This may be a 1-time thing for them though I do hope to get my mom to do a few local 5Ks in the future. I dare say she is in better health and more fit than I am. It all started by lurking and then a WISH journal for me. The support in my journal and on these threads is amazing! If it wasn't for WISH I don't know if I truly would have gotten this far.

I hope everyone has a great day!!! :grouphug: Love you guys!!!

Oh, did someone say Margarita's???

Right back at you Carrie:hug: . Thank you so much to all of the wonderful WISH'ers who have been an important part of my life and shared the journey for the past three years. Your support, friendship and constant inspiration means the world to me and I could never thank you guys enough:love: . Even though I'm still battling an injury I am living vicariously through you all, cheering for your accomplishments and keeping you in my thoughts and prayers when you need them:wizard: . The WISH "team" to me is a welcoming family of athletic minded people joined in spirit who just happen to have a WDW addiction. It may mean something different to all of us but the underlying spirit of support that doesn't need to be defined is what binds us together. We look out for one another, pick each other up when we need it and give each other a kick in the butt when called for:rotfl: . It's the most priceless resource in my training aresenal and I wouldn't trade it for the world.
Best of luck to all of the WISH'ers heading out to the Minnie next week:cheer2: .

:cool1: Kevin!!!

Cecilia, I PROMISE that we will have oranges just for you at the turn around in January 09!!! ::yes::

:goodvibes Anne

Bill, I just went under the HR Option, and changed it from Based on Max, to Custom. Does that customize it to my information (i.e. my age, gender, and weight)? Basically, did I do it right? :confused3

Also, how do I set for interval training? You can answer me in a PM, instead of clogging up this thread. :)

I'll respond here just in case anyone else happens to need the info.

For the heart rate - Based on Max is where you can set your max heartrate and it will adjust the zones for you. Custom is where you can select a heartrate for each zone. If you go into the user profile (hit mode to get to main menu then go to Settings>General>User Profile) you can change the weight by one pound and you will get the prompt again. Just choose yes and Garmin will set everything to the normal averages.

Interval training - There are different options that you can choose and I think they have do with combinations of distance and time. I generally use run for a set distance and rest for a set distance or run for a set time and rest for a set time. To get there hit the mode button for the main menu then select Training>Workouts>Interval. From there select the type of interval you want (run time or distance / rest time or distance). Then you put in the values for the run and rest spots and how many intervals you want. You can also choose if you want a warm up and cool down time (I haven't used this so I don't quite know how it works). If you want to end an interval early, just hit the lap button.

It has been a while since I use the interval function but I think you need to enter in a number one higher than actual number of intervals if you are trying to run for a specific time or distance. For example, a 30 minute workout with a 3 min/2 min interval would need to have 7 reps. This may have been fixed but in the 305 but I can't remember. It is usually the opposite of what I choose so you might want to play with it a little.

HI TEAM!!!!!!!!!!!!! Well last night I did a mile r/w with DD7, she is doing great. Then I went out for a 2 mile walk with the dog. My knees were a little achey, so I chose to walk.

My DD7, who is in 1st grade, is a very sensitive and caring girl. She told me yesterday that some of the "mean" boys were picking on another boy at school during phy ed. class. This other boy is very overweight (his whole family is). She was really bothered by that and told me that she decided to stay with the boy to make him feel better. I was so happy that she did this, because I know how terrible it is when people pick on you for being overweight and not able to do the sports. I talked with her about how everyone has feelings and we have to make sure we don't hurt other people. My daughter is cute, pretty popular and skinny as a rail. So I hope that the others see that it is not cool to be mean.

FLBill - Hey, my second DD start kindergarten in the fall also (**tear**). She is a crazy tough kid, but if your little guy needs some advice on the whole school thing, let me know. She is in PK now and seems to have the ins and outs down. She even gets to ride a bus from daycare to PK. My baby is growing up, but I refuse to admit it yet!!!

I don't have much time for personals, so I apologize.

WISH Team - I can't add much to what has already been said, but I will say THANK YOU for providing such a friendly welcoming environment. Without you guys and these boards, I NEVER would have accomplished any of the running success I've experienced. It's so nice to have a place to come where any question can be asked, any problem can be discussed and it's all met with overwhelming support and encouragement.

Stacie - Good luck with your 5 miler today! Tell Susan we said hello :)

Allyson
- Let me agree with Carrie...you need to stay moving after any long race. WDW is so perfect for it though with all of the places to just stroll/wander around. I'd suggest a brief period of rest, maybe a massage, then get back out there and keep moving. :)

Kevin
- Nice to see you back on the thread! Hope all is well with you

Cecilia - I know that was a tough decision, but it's so great that you are turning it into something so positive as helping other runners with their goals.

Carrie - Sorry for jinxing you!! Glad to see that the yoga worked for you last night :) Oh, and nice quote from the good ol' DH :)

Leana - Glad to see the shin is holding up well! Good luck this Sunday in the 5k and...wow...one week!! Yahoo!

Mel - Hey, nice run!! Kind of got overshadowed there a bit with the chaos.

Christa
- Hope all is well with you...looks like you've got a long day today at work...good luck getting the WO in during lunch!

Kim - Welcome!! Glad to have you aboard!

Amy - I thought I heard some swooning from way up North last night ;) I'm in agreement though, David Cook can SING! Who knew he had a voice like that? wow! (ok..um...but i bet he can't do a marathon...and he probably has a busy schedule...come to think of it Amy, he's not that great...probably doesn't even appreciate a good batch of cookies...:rotfl: ) Say...I'm gonna head to the Sunshine State a day early next week...just thinkin'....

Scott's World
- I'm loving the nice weather!! I biked to the FC last night, did 30 on the elliptical and then completed 10 miles on my wheels. Gotta say that watching the Tour de Georgia the last couple days sparked my inner cyclist...I was crouching, attacking the hills and living out my own little Tour de Neighborhood :rotfl: Anyway, it provided for a nice workout (and saved on gas!).

I'm sorry to those that I missed but I do hope everyone has a great day today!

I would think W.I.S.H. stands for something a little different for everyone just as a lot of you have suggested. You can just tell by the way people post. There are some of you who look for motivation here. Some who look for a sense of community in your quest to stay healthy. Some look to help out others who might not have been walking/running/training as long as they have and have advice to give. Still some look just for accountability, meaning they know that posting their goals here makes them tangible and other people can help hold you to them (hopefully more carrot than stick). For me it does a bit of each but mostly it lets me know that I am not the only one who considers a trip to WDW for the purpose of running a vacation. :cool1:

Being new to the forum I haven’t had the opportunity to do any of the races as a W.I.S.H. team member but that will come.

A quick note on the race ready shirt: I assume it is a wicking shirt. If so don’t use fabric softener in the wash or a dryer sheet in the dryer. Over time it will lessen the effect of the wicking fabric more quickly then washing alone. This goes for all shirts. I’m sure you guys knew this but just in case.

Cecilia: Thanks for the reminder about resting. Those of us who have had over-use injuries have learned the hard way unfortunately.

Debra: I do have a pretty full race schedule. I want to make sure the legs are ready for my week of biking Tuscany. I have never been there but I hear the hills there are a bit steeper and more frequent than those in northeast Ohio.

Kim: Welcome and good luck on the DL half. I did it in ’06 and it was a good race.

Craig: An unrelated question but based on your name I would guess you are a Serie A fan…who do you support? Juventus here!

Hey Scott - I wanted to mention that I like your pic in your siggy line. Every time I see it I picture you saying "I WANT COOKIES". :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

Stacie - That is an awesoem story about your sister. I'm thinking you had a lot to do with encouraging her and shoudl be very proud.

Larry's Girl - Hope you're out there adn I hope you are very proud of yourself! Can't wait to meet you next week!

Frank - Just know that as much as WISH means to you now, you will be blown away after your frist WISH event.

Jen - Hope you're icing those knees! I hope you are just beaming with pride about your DD!

Scott -Thanks for noticing my sig. It really stands for WISH in my mind because dh prtty much just WISHed through what I told him. From teh first meet, though, this person who's not big on socializing adn meeting new poeple was hooked. Now he's spouting off stuff like the quote I just added and he's bnever even posted. Congrats on teh Tour de Neighborhood. As teh winner, you know we need blood test, right? Hope you weren't wearing those shoes with springs in tehm either. :rotfl: (Yes, I know they are fro running, not biking)

Sara - Good to see you! Hope things get better fro you soon! :wizard:

Allyson - Just know that the more you site or lie down, the harder it is to get going again.
