Wk of April 13 - WISH Walking/Running Club

Jen - :rotfl2: She was just trying to help!

JAckie - SO, i fI've been in NC all this time, why have I been on teh TM?????;)

Hi WISHers! :grouphug:

Got back from WDW this past weekend, but I've been busy ever since. Just now getting around to really checking the board. We had a fantastic trip, I'm so glad cause we were kinda having a little bit of WDW burnout.

The sad news is I'm injured from my half. :sad1: I've run four times since and have had to cut all four runs shorter than I wanted to. I was so looking forward to running around the Epcot resort area, but only got out twice to do so and both were short runs - a two miler and a three miler.

I ran yesterday and had to stop short, DH thinks I need to take off a couple weeks, but the thought scares me. :scared1: I already feel like I've lost so much, but I know he is probably right.

The pain starts in my upper front leg, then at about mile one my left knee begins to hurt. Yesterday at a mile and a half I finally ended up doing a weird limp jog sorta thing to get back down the street to my house. Once I start walking I can't start up running again. (That is what happened to me in my half around mile eleven and I had a real struggle running again after I stopped to walk.) Once I get home my left heel and arch hurts. I'm really clueless about this one!

When I'm not running I feel fine. Walking around the house and stuff does not hurt, it all starts once I get about a mile into my runs.

DH has become a running machine ever since the half. He is now planning on doing a full this year. I'm actually very jealous. I feel like I've lost so much that I built up and he is going so strong. All I know is it is a good thing I didn't sign up for the CMM! :scared:

Shan - Now that you're back and not walking all over teh place, that may really help it. Take 3 days off and try again. :wizard: :wizard: Glad you had a great trip!

Yah, Kate is pretty precious. We call her KP for short (Katie Pie, as in cutie pie). Here is one of my all time favorite pics of her because it shows her crazy personality. My girls are very different and I love that!

Hey WISH team! My training is going very well. I had a great 7 miler last week at 11:06 pace and an 8 miler this week at 11:14 pace. I am really excited about the minnie, this is my first race since the marathon in January!

I was such a slouch after the marathon, that I am thinking about signing up for the ING Miami half next year. It is 2 weeks after the Disney marathon (and I am doing Goofy again) would this be crazy to do? I am thinking it may help me to stick to running and not take a month off again.

Shan - I know you don't want to hear this, but I would prob take a week off and see how you feel after that.

Cecilia - So Sorry about your son!! I hope he is feeling ok.

Krista - Congrats on getting out for 3 miles! And I love your nursery! It is so adorable!

Jen - OMG!! That is so funny!! I can totally see my DD saying that!

Christa - Congrats on your great run with neg splits!!

Amy - Sorry you had a bad run. I hope you are feeling better soon :)

Becky

Shan--Sounds like your IT band to me. Definitely take some time off, I know you don't want to, but if you keep running on it, it will never heal. Don't believe me? Just ask me about WDW marathon 2007. Once you take 3 days off and run again and it hurts again, you're going to have to take some time off from running and try walking, the elliptical, and the bike. Also if you don't lift weights, start now, the only thing that prevents IT band injury is having the muscles surrounding your knee and thigh developed. Leg curls are the best for the IT band. Good luck!!!! :goodvibes

Jen--Kate sounds like a riot! And Katie Pie is right! So cute!

Claire--Carter will be 5 months old in January, so big enough that he'll be fun (past the boring blob stage), but hopefully not scared of the characters yet.

Judy--Take a break tonight!! I thought that's why we got married, so our husband's have to do all the hard work. Isn't that right?? ;)

Amy--Your post tomorrow better say "I had a massage and then met with the chiropractor. After that I went home and baked dozens of cookies and ate them all". :thumbsup2

Krista

Jen - OMG she is an absolute DOLL!!! Maybe she can start watching a different commercial now so she can say "I"m too excited to sleep!!" :yay:

Krista - Is THAT why???? :rotfl: :rotfl2: :lmao:

Shan I have been thinking about you wondering how you were doing?   I understand more than you think I do and I totally agree with everyone else about taking time off but PLEASE believe mem when I tell you, I KNOW IT'S EASIER SAID THAN DONE.

Actually your post helps me feel like I'm not crazy. I have been having some awesome times on my runs but now my back is really acting up again, but I don't want to stop and lose everything I have built back up, but like Krista I also know what can happen if you ignore your bodies warning signs, I did it about this time a year a go and ended up really bad. So maybe we can try to take the advice together and think of the long term!! I know it's hard, believe me I do, but it's worth it.

SHAN: Do a youtube.com search for Iliotibial band, and you'll find a bunch of videos on streching, and how to use a foam roller. Or do a google.com search to read articles.

Take a few days off, and just stretch. Get in to see your massage therapist or a chiropractor for an adjustment.

Our clinic doc suggest taking 8 weeks off if you are injured. I doubt you'll need that much time off.

If you must workout, cross train by walking or water aerobics in a pool, or cycle on a stationary bike.

ANGIE: It's okay to take a day off every once in a while.

This is for everybody: Listen to your body, if you are hurting, it's telling you it needs some healing time.

CARRIE: I got it, Second Star to the Right (ala Peter Pan). Cute plate.

OK, I was a bad girl and skipped yga. Justified it by sying i was goign to get the Pilates for DUmmies DVD (yes,I've been lurking on teh core thread).

What core thread, I need to be there :confused3

Krista I start Monday and I am counting the seconds I am so excited!!!

Shan - I have a foam roller for my IT band. When I'm doing it, it hurts like...you know what. I say many very bad and unDisneylike words. But...It REALLY REALLY helps! I swear it's worth it! :thumbsup2

Carrie: Target XT....hmm sure why not! You can have a silly license plate--you just might want to get someone to...proofread...it first! :lmao:

Amy: ooo a massage and rest...you're livin' it up! :thumbsup2 Cookie? Coookie? Coooooookie?

Judy: Ha you sound like me! I don't really get sore from running (until I get into reaLLLLy long runs), but I always get sore from gardening! Good job getting the 3 miles in anyway. I'm taking lessons at a hunter/jumper/eq. barn. Since it has been a while (last time was in August and a break before that), I guess you could say hunter eq. I rode h/j/e in high school but in college I did Parelli and a spent two summers working on a ranch. Needless to say my position isn't exactly show-ready! Last week my instructor put me on a little bay paint 8yr old (Ben) who used to do eventing but then just got dumped in a field before she got him. He liked to go and was a nice ride. This week I was on a paint large pony mare (keep in mind I don't usually like paints or mares!). It was going rather nicely when she tripped and put her head down as we were finishing the corner after the course....I wasn't really tight in my leg...:rolleyes1 ...yeah that was a graceful [unexpected] dismount. I actually did a complete flip! I was hoping I would be less sore this week....somehow, after that, I'm thinking not! It is so nice to be back on a horse though!

Jen: :rotfl: too cute! Maybe she has a future in show biz! you can call up WW and make an offer hehehe

Shan: WB! WDW burnout?!? What's that? It does sound like it would be wise to take a week or two off from running. Remember you can still XT to keep up your fitness!

Becky: Good job on getting the runs in and nice pace! But..... :scared1: Yikes! Yes I do think that doing a marathon 2 weeks after doing Goofy would be too much. The general rule of thumb is to have one non-competitive day for each mile that your race was. So for Goofy that's 40 days before the next competition. It doesn't mean that you can't reverse taper and start into light training during those 40 days, but you put a lot of effort into race day and your body does need some recovery time. Pick a nice 5K or 10K about two months after the race would be much kinder to your body and can help keep you motivated!

Krista and Amy: no no silly! It should say "I had a massage and then met with the chiropractor. After that I went home and baked dozens of cookies and ate some and mailed yall some and here's the recipe:":thumbsup2

:scared:

Time to get to work for me...though I will be slipping in a skate this afternoon!

Nothing earth shattering, but it's been a very loooong day with yucky news. SO nice ot come here for a smile. yeah, been here a lot today. :rolleyes1

Jen - OMG, KP is too cute! Does she have a friend named Ron stoppable? :rotfl: (hello, my name is Carrie. I am over 30 years old, have no kids, but watch Kim possible. I may have problems :confused3 )

ANgie - Good luck Monday!!! I am so excited fro you. I don't envy you those awkward first days at a new job, but I know you'll be so much happier!

Time for my first "Reply post"

Jeff- Being the last to post is a small price to pay for living in Hawaii if you ask me. I imagine it is even better than the Polynesian Resort.

Shan- I had an IT band issue crop up from over use a few years back. I stretched and iced every day and didn’t run one step for 8 days. It was tough but the IT issue never came back. Sometimes your patience is rewarded.

Morgan - Almost time for your first 5K race? I think just about everyone has a crazy dog story if they have been running long enough. I was out running once around midnight (I like summer night running) and two dogs just ran with me for about 5 miles. Then I passed a butcher shop and they couldn’t bother with me any more.:confused3

Jen- Glad the daughter wants to do a 5K. It is always good to see kids that want to go out and play. At least she isn’t trying to find a way to do a 5K on a WII:)
[/b]

I went on a very leisurely run last night to break in the new shoes. It went well. I always worry about blisters when breaking in new ones. It was about perfect running weather yesterday when I went...52 with 32% humidity. I will be hitting the trail with the bike tonight. I am not sure how far I will go but it will most likely be about 20.

This weekend I will be doing a 5K on Saturday (Same one as Morgan's first 5K) and one on Sunday.

Thanks everyone for all the advice. :grouphug:

I'm gonna go look up IT band and take some time off. Cecilia was sweet and sent me a PM of a doc near us, too.

Angie, I'm sending you pixie dust. :wizard:
We'll just be crazy together. :upsidedow

Oh Carrie - I think you and KP would get along well. She like Pooh also. Her b-day is coming up and we are doing a Pirate and Princess party. She didn't want anyone to feel left out and she wants boys to come. She likes playing with boys, not because she likes them but because they are tough like her!!! Argggggg.... she's a pirate in hiding!

Oh my gosh, Jen, I laughed so hard I spit a little of my yogurt out!! How precious! Gotta love advertising (at least I do, I work in it ;) )

Krista, you are SO sweet!! Good for you for walking! I LOVE the nursery decor!

Claire, I am jealous! I took riding lessons in college and I miss it so much!! Have fun!

Shan, take care of yourself! That's most important!

Carrie, don't feel bad. I watch DC all the time.. I love Phineas and Ferb, Suite Life, Hannah Montana...

FireDancer, (it's Frank, right?), oh my gosh, I am obsessed! It's very sad. Congrats on the new shoes! I am planning on going to 2nd Sole this weekend to get fitted (since I haven't actually done that yet!).

As for me.. short run last night 2.32mi, my knee was cursing me out all the while for not giving it a days rest. Oh well! I am leaving for a massage in thirty minutes and I am really looking forward to it!! For those of you "yogis" in the bunch, have you ever done bikram yoga? Our corporate yoga class is ending for the summer and I was looking into taking a bikram style (but only 80 degrees) class.

Frank it is. 2nd Sole is nice. I actually prefer the Fleet Feet in Northfield. It is a trek but I have just had good experiences with them.

Hi team...

Looks like some of us are having problems with body parts, I am sending somepixiedust: to all get rest up and get better soon.

Today was a rest day for me, so I went for my monthly deep tissue massage (I think his middle name is Mr. Torture, but I needed it and he finds places that are stiff that I never knew I had), spent two hours at work catching up on things, got a hair cut and did some core work thanks to Panda and the core thread!!

Tomorrow it's off to my famous Mt. Trashmore!!

Have a good one!!!:)

So I guess I'm the only WISHer who's actually following the "rest cure"?;)
Anyway Shan and Angie, I know it's hard, but can it really be any harder than running a half marathon? :)

I start back up tomorrow with a 3 miler and, of course, I'm paranoid about every little ache and pain and twitch I've been feeling in the week I have not run. So I'm working hard on reminding myself of what i've done so far, and what I DON'T need to prove at the Minnie, and just hoping that things are okay.

[Slight pause while I chased the dog who had my WISH shirt in his mouth and was playing his usual game of "you'll have to catch me if you want it back!]

Fire Dancer (May I call you Fire?) Racing on Saturday & Sunday? You must be one of the "Goofy" types. Glad your new shoes are working out. I have taken my new ones on 2 indoor runs, but this weekend they get their first taste of the outdoors.

Hope everyone survived tax day. I mailed my 6 returns and came home and had chocolate!

Maura
