Hello everyone!

For those new to us, we are a group of people who are planning to participate in walking/running events throughout the year. For most of us, the ultimate goal is to train and compete in the annual WDW Half/Full marathons. We'll also be posting news and training for various other events throughout the year. We range from non-running beginners to triathletes. Come join us, whether you're training for an event or walking/running for fitness!

New WISH Team members. If you read one thing over and over, believe this. Being part of this team is fantastic. Part of the ride you get for the event is what I call the roller coaster. There will be lots of ups and downs. The more you post here, the more you will find yourself enjoying the ride. It is an incredible journey. Don't be afraid, shy or whatever to come here and just post up anything. You don't have to know us right away, or all of us at all. You will get to know some of us. It makes the event you are enjoying have MORE meaning and we love to have you.

Did my 5 mile LR yesterday...it was a STONKER! I didn't get out until 8:30am yesterday so it was already hot and humid. I did the first 2 miles in 23 min, but was struggling. When I hit the 2.5 mile turnaround, I turned right into a 15mph wind and my brain said, "Nope, not gonna do it. I'm outta here!" Tried a gel at mile 3, but didn't get much more oomph out of that. I'm thinking maybe I don't do good with odd mileage ;) . 5 and 7 weren't good...but my last 8 mile run is currently referred to as THE RUN AGAINST WHICH ALL OTHERS SHALL BE COMPARED!

My experience yesterday reminded me of a few things:
1. I really need protein before a LR.
2. I really can't run unless my brain is 100% into it.
3. It's really hot and humid in FL.

Here's what we did today:
77486Image029-med.jpg

Christa...:wizard: and  for a good outcome on your test. The waiting is usually the hardest part.

Andrew...you'll be happy to know we began the indoctrination early with DD4...her first WDW trip was at 9 weeks. DD14 went for the first time at 3 1/2. DH and I didn't make it until age 4, but our excuse is that WDW wasn't built until I was 3 ;) .

Dave...great job on your run!

Martha and Craig...good luck on your race!

Sunny...sorry it's still so chilly up there. Way to stick with your LR!

Vic...you're the bomb! Don't you still take care of us in a 'protect and serve' kinda fashion?

Cam...glad to see you're feeling better, but sorry that you're at work again.

Richard...congrats on your 5 miles! Great pace!

Kiena...great pace on your 8 miles!

Terri...glad the ankle is getting better! How long before you're back in the action?

Stephanie...great job on your LR! Are you working in nuclear? We're having a bit of trouble getting I131...the company told us there were reactors down in Canada affecting supplies here.

Cindy...good luck on your race!

OptiMike...I don't think softball is supposed to be a contact sport

Meghan...DH likes the "bar fight" or excuse for such events that you don't care to explain with the truth ;)

Jen...congrats on finishing your 8! Hope the PF smoothes out soon.

Krista...glad you're sister is doing better.

Lisa...great to have you back!

Melissa...how's the doggie doing? Do we get to see pictures? Hope Phil is well!

Kevin...glad the exams are over! Hope to see you more often now!.

I had a slightly startling experience today...lost another toenail  I actually had no idea this one was on it's way out. I noticed a blister near the nail on the toe and ran my thumb across it...nail just slid right off :scared1:

Good training everyone!

Hi WISH Team!

I'm sitting here and thinking about our great WISH Team. I figured it was time to give our cheer so come on WISH Team give it a go:

Thunder, thunder, thunderation!
We're the WISH group delegation.
When we move with determination,
We create a GREAT! sensation.

Enjoy the training this week.

 the "you really don't want to know just how yucky it can get" bug made it's way through our house this past week. EVERYONE had it at some point in time. Obviously it put a damper on my training, so we will just start with today:

I had a great bike ride, I did 18 miles in around 1:15 - 1:25 (still don't have a battery for my bike computer). I did almost call DH about 1 mile from the house to see if he would come pick me it. It's the last mile of the ride, and it is all uphill. But I sucked it up, and finished the ride myself. :cool1: I was pleased. I also saw a beaver on my ride today. Well it was a beaver or a ground hog, I'm not sure which, we were both moving kinda fast. I have a confession to make - I don't like going down large hills on the bike. I know that I go waaay too slow but I am afraid of them. The last time I fell off a bike I was 6 yo, and I plan to keep it that way. Unless falling off the bike will help me go faster downhill.

In other happenings today, I am pretty sure I took a crazy pill. I decided that I would replace the liner in my pool this weekend, so I am draining the pool, and getting everything ready to disassemble the pool. I have lost my mind.

To all who raced today - whoo hoo! I hope it was great!. Matt, I would love to hear about your century ride, as I would like to try one sometime this summer

GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE RACING TOMORROW!

Christa – More good thoughts, prayers and well wishes coming your way.

Krista - good news about Shari! Sending more :wizard: for continued success.

Stephanie - Those C130s come over my area as well.

Vic – another Thank-you for your service to our country

MelR - Good news about Phil. :goodvibes On another note, I don't get why some doctors/medical personnel sit on results such as this. Something similar happened to me once and I was on pins and needles waiting to hear something.

Mel - Yikes about the toe nail. I hate the heat and humidity as well. It's that way in Arkansas now and it just drains my energy.

TriMom - Hope your family is doing better now. By the way, I don't like going fast down large hills either. I always feel that I'll hit a rock or bump and lose control.

Lily - Thanks for the cheer. It's good to hear every now and then!

As for everyones likes and dislikes about a marathon....
Oops! :rolleyes1 I'm glad to know all of this as I was one of those obnoxious people who yelled to you at the end: "The finish is just around the corner". Now I know what NOT to do.

Sending :wizard: and well wishes for those that need it. Sending good thoughts to everyone for a successful week ahead. :goodvibes

I thought you guys might enjoy this article:

Marathoner, 70, Nabs Alleged Thief
AP
WOLFEBORO, N.H. (April 28) - A shoplifter would have to run pretty far to get away from this 70-year-old clerk.

Judy Brenner sprinted about 100 feet to catch a teen she thought stole liquor Thursday from the store where she works in Wolfeboro.

Brenner, who ran the Boston Marathon this month, discovered the teen had a half-gallon of whiskey under his jacket. She and others who joined the chase helped detain him until police arrived.

"He didn't run, but he walked faster, so I picked up my pace," Brenner said. "I wasn't going to let him go."

Brenner, of Brookfield, said she ran 14 marathons decades ago and finished the Boston Marathon this month in just over five hours, placing sixth among the women in her age bracket.

The suspect was charged with theft and unlawful possession of alcohol by a minor.

I had a great walk yesterday, 3 miles in 44 minutes. Today, well, not so good. Again, I'm not sure who to believe (My garmin 205 or the software that I download all the garmin info into). The watch says we went 4 miles, the software says 4.17. Either way it took 69 minutes (so a mpm between 16:33 and 17:20). A lot slower for only one more mile. I wonder if my legs were tired from the hard work yesterday? Very possible.

Speaking of neat creatures on walks, we were walking along a lake here in WA, and today we saw a river otter hanging out on someone's deck. It was so cool and we stopped for a minute to take a couple pictures. I've seen river otters at the zoo and aquarium, but never in the wild. It was HUGE! I'll post a pic when we get them off the camera :)

Mel I'm sorry your run was so tough! I bet it is the odd number :lmao:

Lily Thanks for the cheer, I like it!

TriMom That's quite a ride, and good for you for finishing the last (uphill!) mile.

Happy new week to everyone!

Well, it is 5 in the morning and I'm up with a sore tummy from drinking a glass of red wine last night. I was hoping to go out this morning around 7, but it is now looking doubtful.

Mel - Oh, no about the heat and humidity. I'm guessing I will need to go out VERY EARLY late next month when we're at WDW to get my sessions in... I'm a tad scared! :scared: I guess I really need to learn how to run on the treadmill. Yuck.

bekkiz - I love river otters! They are my fav at the zoo. Can't wait to see the pic! Do any of you remember Emmett Otter's Jug Band Christmas? I LOVED that movie!

I mentioned that my headaches were gone, but yesterday I got another one. I went up to the grocery store to check my blood pressure and it was 149/77 ?!? I have always had very low blood pressure. Weird. My blood pressure was high when I was on the steroids for my poison ivy a few weeks back. I thought it was just because of the steroids. Next time I get another headache I'm gonna drive up to the store and check it again. I can't believe I would need blood pressure medicine at the age of 35. I've been incorporating the running into my walking for three weeks now. Could the running be triggering it? I hope not.

Good Morning Team: :surfweb:

Not much more for me to report. I did some napping and reading through Runner's World after getting up at 4:30am yesterday (DD6 set her alarm for 4:00am and woke the whole house up). I like the RW article on getting your kids to run. I must admit I skimmed through the magazine and didn't read it closely, but I will.

Mel- Sorry your 5 miler was a stonker. Well, you got the stonker run out of your system before the Minnie, right?

Thanks for the cheer Lily.

TriMom- Uuugh, sorry your dealing with the bug  in your house. Hope everyone gets better soon.

bekkiz- Sounds like you got a lot of good training in this week. 7 miles over two days - that's great! Sounds like your legs my need a little rest. Don't forget to listen to your body.

I love river otters! They are my fav at the zoo. Can't wait to see the pic! Do any of you remember Emmett Otter's Jug Band Christmas? I LOVED that movie!
Shan- I also love that Christmas special. "We're not birds, we're a jug band!" I keep looking for it to come out on DVD. I hope everything works out with your blood pressure.

Just want to send a quick HI :wave2: out to my teammates.

Colleen- are you ready for the campout next weekend? I'm sorry you can't come out and join us at the Flying Pig.

Good morning, everyone.

Today the butterflies start. I'm doing the Frederick (Md) Half Marathon on May 6.

Until yesterday, I wasn't nervous. Then I read the race info more closely. It's got a 14 mpm min pace requirement. (Remember, I'm a walker...previous events were a 16 min.) I told myself, "Snap out of it. You can do this. 13:00 or better is your average." :goodvibes

Then I checked the elevation map. :faint: I know it's not to scale, but geez. Those hills sure look steep.

43319FredMar.jpg

Congrats to everyone who raced this weekend. I love reading about your experiences. Sorry I can't keep up with replies to the thread. But, rest assured, I am reading and with you in spirit. :)

I am jumping in early this week, so hopefully I can keep up!!!!

I am back from 8 miles today. The first 6.8 were great, but that last 1.2 almost killed me. i don't know what happened, but it was terrible.

It was "cool" this morning when we started and there was no humidity--I am hoping for a repeat next Sunday at the Minnie.

I did not keep up wit this thread at all last week, so I am off to go see what I missed!

Hope everyone has a great week!!!

Morning teammates! Nothing to report from me--unless a 9 hr shift at Walgreen's counts as xtraining--at least I didn't get cussed at yesterday--hoping today brings the same luck!:rotfl:

I am still very sore from my stonker on Friday. :confused3 I'm just hoping that all these stonkers that have been plaguing us will lead to great performances race day.

Kelley--you'll do great at your half! I always get those butterflies--we'll be with you in spirit!

mel--not working nuclear anymore--can't handle the nightshifts with my crazy kiddos at home. But I wouldn't be surprised about the probs with I131--seems like radioactive isotopes fail qc quite frequently. We had a week or so where all our Tc99m generators failed qc--we were scrambling. Sorry about your stonker--mine seem to fall on the even numbers. So since the Minnie is between 9 and 10 miles we should both do wonderfully!:thumbsup2

trimom--HOpe everyone is feeling better soon!

Well, I should go get in the shower. Gotta go to work again today:scared: By this time next week, I'll be finished with the Minnie--heading back for a wonderful day at EPCOT!!:woohoo: :yay:

Slapped my bike race report up on the other thread, and I'll update this one with my weekly totals once I decide whether or not I'm a glutton for punishment and want to get out there for my swim/LR today...

OK teammate Sandy reporting for duty!!

I signed in a couple of weeks ago, but the snow here did me in, I really am not a runner!1 (I Hated it in college, and I dislike it now! ) BUT I'm determined, dh dangled the Disney trip (just the 2 of us!) carrot, and so I have to decide whether I can do this...

I'm on week 4 of the couch-to-5K running program... sorta... I am running outdoors and mostly I'm taking from that is dont overdo, stick with it...

I also took dh's gammin GPS out on my course - I thought it was app 1 mile, the gps didnt record it, so I went out again - last Sunday it is a 1.5 course, so last week I did the 3 mile course in 47 min - mostly walked that second loop... as dh puts it my shopping mode is a good fast pace walk!! (or when I gather FP for WDW!! ;) )

So, today I decided to see how fast I could complete the 1.5 miles... 17 minutes..

I wonder about what plan I should use now? I was thinking of increasing my route to make it 3 miles, and slowly build up to 15 min miles - but dh says I need 13 min miles for the Disney Marathon or I'll be "swept"...

are there any good websites for me to look at? Dh is (was) a marathon runner so he has his own plan of attack...

eta - I'm now living on the links in the sticky thread...

Good afternoon everyone.

Nursing my foot today and watching racing from Talladega. GO JR.!!

Mel – Sorry your LR was a stonker. These days I get to supervise those who do the actual protecting and serving. The last time I walked on the floor to work a position one of my training officers told me to go back to my office, as she didn't have time to answer 911 and babysit me at the same time. :rotfl:

WHAT LILY SAID! :cheer2:

TriMom – Great job with the 18 miler!

Susie - Hooah! :thumbsup2

I yelled to Cam and Rhonda to smile as they were making their way through MGM (I was trying to snap a picture). If I would have know what happened earlier to Cam, and would have realized just how miserable it was for the marathoners that day I would have kept my big mouth shut. Rookie mistakes. :rolleyes1

Bekkiz – Great job with the walk.

Shan – Take care of that BP.

Dave – Wa’sup?

Kelley – You’re going to do great!

Christy – Great job with the 8 miler!

Stephanie – Have fun at work.

Eeyore45 – Great pace. You CAN do it. The pacing requirement for the ½ is 16 mpm.

Hey guys! Just popping in real quick to say HI to everyone. Sorry I've been so "absent" lately, I have a huge proposal due out this Friday and it's been keeping me crazy busy. I'm glad it's due before next weekend so that I can actually enjoy the Flying Pig weekend without worrying about work at all.

Just from skimming, it looks like everyone's having a pretty good weekend. Sorry if I missed any big news, and I promise I'll try to catch up with everyone very soon. Great job to everyone racing this weekend! Guess a lot of us are in taper mode for either the Pig or the Minnie, so I'm surprised the taper madness hasn't caused the weekly thread to be to about page 14 by now. :)

Have a great rest of the weekend, guys, and don't work too hard this week (I'll try to practice what I preach, too ;) ).

Steve

Hi WISH Team!

Eeyore, if you need to decide a program, there are a lot of Penguins here following the John Bingham program. You might like the Hal Higdon pace if you are already doing the speed you are. It will definitely not be a problem for you to do the half, you've got the required pace and then some, just need to stretch out the distance some.

Hooah, I meant to say our family has coined that term a bit differently to reflect head up **** and also meaning one should have heard, understood, and acknowledged I suppose.

Kelley, you can do it if you can walk better than a 13 min pace. I tried to see how fast I could walk. I could not qualify for any minimum if I walked. I must Wog.

I did 8 miles today and a 14 minute pace, happy about that. Good training everyone. Next week I'll be done with the Minnie enjoying some spa time.

thanks Tiger Lily - I've been reading all the sites listed, and just wondered if I should concentrate now on increasing distance, or stick with increasing time? It felt good only 'walking" twice in the 1.5 jog - but I like the term "wog" I think that apatly describes what I'm doing!!

I've also found the google maps gps site so I went and did a route or two, and found one that is a tad over 2 miles... so I think I'll add that next week! Right now I cannot imagine running/wogging for 3 hours!! 8 miles seems like a far distance - can you stop midway at the Dairy Queen??? ;)

What a race report I have!! Total time, 63:10 for 6.2 miles! Splits =

9.51 (OK, very scarey here, I CANNOT sustain this for an entire race; have to slow down),
10:14 (well, better, but still too fast),
10:37 (better but now too slow),
10:23 (made up time from mile 3),
10:15 (hm, too fast for the Minnie),
10:10 (oh dear, could I really be running this fast?) and bring it in the last 0.2 miles.

The only thing I can say is, Didn't I have 11 seconds in me to bring it in under 63 minutes!?!?!!!!! Now this is a PR for me, but I'm complaining that I couldn't bring it in under 63 minutes! LOL!!!!!

I have run this race before. 3 years ago it was my very first 10K race. Time then 65:06. I didn't run it in 2005, but I ran it last year. Time then 65:16. So I really did well today. Now, here comes a really great thing that happened. I was wearing my WISH shirt and just after we'd crossed the finish line and got water, we were walking toward all the activity. I felt a tap on my shoulder. I turned around to find someone I'd never met before say how great my shirt was and she used it as a guide throughout the race! She always kept it (me) in sight so she could keep with my pace! And she LOVED the DLF>DNF>>DNS.

And a very special thanks go to my dear, dear DH for staying with me. He was my Yoda (Do or do not. There is no try.). God bless you.

Sandy: what Lily said!

Vic: hope the foot gets better quickly!

Stephanie: sorry to hear about your stonker plus the fun time you are having at work!! Here's some :wizard: that things get better quickly!!

KelNottAt: lots of luck and :goodvibes for your run on May 6th. The elevation map looks like what I ran today. Oooo doggies was that so not necessary!

Mouse Skywalker: I must have missed it, but any reason why your DD got up at 4:00 am? AND setting an alarm to do so?

lenshanem: sorry to hear the BP was high. I'm highly susceptible to poison ivy. When I get it, the only thing that helps me is Ruhli Gel by Band Aid. That stuff works wonders. And it's non-perscription.

TriMom: nice job on the 18 mile bike ride. :thumbsup2

Hope everyone has a great rest of the day.

Real quick b/4 I get into the shower to get ready for church!

I just ran 3.2 miles in 25:20 Min...this is an ave 7:55 MPM!:cool1:
I know I did the 1st mile in 7:44.:scared1:
It was an out and back course and JRT was slowing down a bit on the way back b/c of the heat (88)...she also had to take a potty break and I could not get my watch stopped...every second counts.
