Wk of Apr 23--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

hEY wish tEAM!

Dave, How about telling DW, "Honey, you know how I've said I want to do the WDW Marathon? You'll never guess what I've gone and done?" Then you can register and life will go on happily ever after!
:teeth: :sunny:

Anyway, don't let yourself be closed out of the registration. That would be horrible.

Kim, your "ramblings" are matching many of my thoughts. So I'm not thinking you are rambling. Enjoy that bike ride.

Minnie, :lmao:

I actually like the convenience of those sport beans too. Never thought about Jack or the pot of gold. Rigt on with that!

Dana, what a work out you must have had with those two. How wonderful that you were able to go out though.

Jodi, sorry about your feelings about the get together tonight. I do understand the sentiment about spending more time with coworkers rather than just going home. When we go out a a group, there are always some who don't partake of those "adult beverges," and not anything is thought of it. Plan on at least a bit of fun and maybe it will become that for ya.

I'm thinking of ALL the WISH Team members who are getting close to the Minnie. (With much envy I must add)

DH and I spoke last night of my event commitment for this season. I'm cleared for choices, just must determine the work thing around it.

Judy-- Your cruise Garmin story is too funny :rotfl2: Do you upload your runs to your pc? I bet it looks like a straight line with little tiny loop-de-loops!

Carrie-- Just last week I meantioned something to Paul that I overheard at DD and prefaced it with "but I think he is a little simple, so I don't know how accurate it might be". When he asked why I thought he was simple my reply was because he was so friendly and was talking the ears off of the DD staff. Isn't that awful? I thought it was only us cold Bostonians that are suspicious of friendly people!

OK, you asked for it:

EAT Thread Kick-off

Hi Team,

Well today was XT so I did my 60 min KBX class. Good, tough workout. My legs feel better since I think KBX really gives me a good stretch and generally loosens the legs. Last night my hips were aching sooo much. But today they feel pretty good :).

For those who are looking for stretching alternatives, here is what has worked super for me lately :thumbsup2 . Before my run I do some power yoga, which is basically quick movement between poses. I do the sun salutation about 5 times (more if I'm really tight). It doesn't take that long at all and your flowing through the postures quickly which gets the blood flowing, the muscles warmed up and some good pre-run stretch. Afterwards I do a 30 minute Power Yoga for runners dvd. I've been doing this for several weeks now and I really like how I feel before and after the run (excluding the hips?).

Dana: Thanks for the stretching advice. I'll have to give those a try. Maybe first thing in the morning then at night before bed!

Carrie: I need some of those "magic beans" LOL! :rotfl:

Dave: Not that we're big drinkers :rolleyes1 but I find that sharing some wine when breaking the news helps LOL! That's what worked for me. DH and I were out to dinner and enjoying a nice bottle of red wine when I decided to bring up the marathon. I don't know....it might be worth a try :confused3 . :teeth: He didn't seem as shocked as I thought he would be.

Here's a question....how many of you belong to a running club? I emailed a local running club and they got back to me right away. But looking at their results in local races I'd say I'm awfully slow, maybe painfully slow for them. Not sure running with them would help since I'd still be alone LOL! :teeth:

Also, do any of you belong to Team in Training? Can you explain that to me? TIA!

Hi, everyone! Glad to hear people are getting training sessions in.

Dave -- Please do not take a chance on getting shut out of the marathon. We haven't received any emails yet, updating on registration levels, but I THINK it was filled last year months earlier than it had the year before. And it seems the event grows in popularity each year and the risk is significant that it would be full pretty early.

DH and I received our postcards confirming that he is Goofy and I am Mickey. I am seriously doubting my sanity here. I cannot even begin to tell you how intimidated I am.

Sunny -- heading over to check out that thread. Have started attending WW meetings again, so I can use all the help I can get. Thanks!

Good news for me today is that my migraine is gone. Hoping to maybe get to the gym tonight after a school event for DS. If I could force myself to spend an hour on the TM and accomplish 4, I would be ecstatic!

Happy Administrative Assistants Day to everyone out there who makes anyone's life easier in an office. We are doing a catered lunch for our staff and did $50 gift cards to Kohls for all of them. They seem very happy with that. I am so fortunate that we have the absolute BEST STAFF ever! :grouphug:

Cam - Please dpn't tell our staff what your staff got  Glad the head's better! You will be fine for the marathon!

It's funny. Know when my perfect time to break stuff to dh is? WHen we run. TIme to build up courage, captive audience. Worked really good so far, except for the Minnie. I need ot give up on it and so far everything's working against me, but I just keep hoping.

Dave, How about telling DW, "Honey, you know how I've said I want to do the WDW Marathon? You'll never guess what I've gone and done?" Then you can register and life will go on happily ever after!
Does anyone remember the old Saturday Night Live skit "Bad Idea Jeans". Yeah, sorry Lily, but this is a bad idea for my family. :sad2: I think one sure way for my DW to freak out and not be on board with the idea is if I just go ahead and do it without discussing it first.

Seriously everyone, thanks for all your ideas and good wishes about registering for the marathon. Geez, it's nice to feel wanted by the TEAM. Actually, I threw out some more hints to DW today about me running the WDW marathon and taking the family, and even though she thought it was a crazy scheme she did say that "it would be fun to go." I even broached the subject with my SIL about going down with us and helping to watch the princesses, DD5 princess: and DD8 princess:, while I run, and my SIL was on board with the idea too. So I'm getting closer to getting a :thumbsup2 and going ahead and registering. It certainly would be easier to convince my DW I could run the marathon if I wasn't spending so much time icing my shins.

See, now there is where I think you are wrong. You are taking good care of your body, treating it as a serious athlete should and continuing with a dedicated and determined training strategy. I would not be at all skeptical of you in this situation. Instead, I would admire that you were pressing on, despite pain and the extra effort your plan is requiring of you. Remind her of how proud she and your princesses will be when they can brag that their DH/Daddy finished the WDW Marathon and got a Mickey medal. :cheer2:

Dave, I didn't mean for you to feel pressured from me. Well, I lie, yes I do. Anyway, I know you need to do things in your own way. I'm just hoping for the best and that you won't be closed out when the time finally arrives for you. PD to ya.

btw--As I sit here not having made any commitment either...

Sunny thanks for that thread start. I just can't seem to get myself to that line yet either. Maybe it's just what I need. I've read it anyhow.

Cam, Yay! on those postcards. I know that feeling. It is really part of the process. Exciting! You group really treats the admins wonderfully. Great to hear. Not happening where I'm at just now.

Amy, not a TnT person here. I joined NEOhio Fit (affiliated with USAfit.com. Our group is not elite/fast people although there are a couple. It is comprised more of people on the slower side and that is what works for me. I enjoy the company, however we only meet on Saturdays. The rest is up to us for the week. I don't mind that though, the week is time runs and the weekend lr is where the companions com in. Sometimes though I pace in between and find myself alone. It is not predictable, yet is enjoyable.

Enjoy the training everyone.

:rotfl2: Oh, that is so something I would say. We want what's best for you and tour family Dave, just as long as that's being with us for the marathon in January.

Plane tics fro the Minnie have doubled. It's rumored that FIL will be out of the hospital that Friday, so theer'll be a family gathering. I think it's time fo me to give it up. :(

Is there a tracking system for the Minnie? I coul dnot find one on the website, but would love to see how my WISH friends are doing!

Does anyone know if there is a correlation with cooler weather and flare-up of running injuries--specifically IT band syndrome? You guys all know that I've been struggling with ITBS for over a month now and I haven't attempted to run in over 2 weeks (I made it 4 miles before the pain started on my last attempt on 4/9) and I've committed myself to walking the Flying Pig 1/2 which is next Sunday (5/7). We've had a cold snap come through OH and our temps have gone from highs in the upper 70's/lower 80's to highs in the 50's since Sunday. Yesterday, my knee started aching a little and today it outright hurts--it feels like I've been running, but I haven't at all, in fact I haven't even walked since my 11 miles on Saturday. I went out today for 3 miles (wearing my ITBS band) and made it about 6/10 of a mile before I came home because I started getting the familiar twinges in the back and outside of my knee. What gives?? Is it the colder weather making it ache? :confused3 Am I over analyzing this or being a hypochondriac?

Carrie--Sorry that you can't run Minnie!! :grouphug: But it sounds like your training is getting back on track. I know what you mean about seeing fellow WDW marathoners in the "real world", a couple of weeks ago I cornered a man at the Community Center who was wearing his WDW marathon shirt. I think he thought I was the crazy one!!

Dave-- :wizard: on breaking the news to the fam! I'm very grateful that both Stephen and I run and realize what a big deal this all is.

Jodi-- :grouphug: for tonight and the night out with your co-workers. I know exactly what you mean, I don't drink either and when I'm with a group of people who are drinking, I feel like I'm their kid sister that Mom made bring along to babysit! Plus, it's never lovely to see your co-workers lit up!!

I better go see what Hines is doing outside. Stephen put a new layer of top soil in our retaining wall in preparation of spring planting, Hines seems to think it is his personal dig site. :furious:

Hi Carrie! :wave2:

You are too funny because you sound like me! I too couldn't get DH to agree to send me down to Florida for Minnie! Nothing worked :flower3:
, I just gave up because I am hoping to work on him for the Disney marathon weekend.

He absolutely will not be going in 2007, I am hoping I will be able to find someone to go with me! He is running Boston in 2007 so I think I have some bargaining chips! :stir:

I have just finished reading through this weeks thread - some familiar names from the 2005 Wish Walkers.

I signed up for the DL 1/2 in Sept, not knowing if I would be able to participate or not. But now I have confirmation that I can, so I am starting training this week. 4 months out is not my ideal training program, but it's better than not at all.

Last August I participated in the 60km weekend to end breast cancer walk, and after the walk was done on Sunday, a woman run over my foot in her ECV (?) and broke my foot. It was only a tiny fracture but took forever to heal.

Now I am waiting to have my gallbladder removed - the waiting list is 12 months! But the surgeon said there is absolutely no reason why I cannot run in the meantime.

I have not decided whether I will run or run/walk or walk. I will see how my first two weeks of training go, then decide.

My DH is coming with me and my girlfriend, her husband and their two girls (5 and 3). So I will have a cheer squad this time. We are staying at the DLH.

Can't wait.

So glad to finally have some training to report! Went to the gym and did:
10 mins. stretching
5 minute warmup at 4mph -- .33 miles
miles 1-2 ==>> 26:38 (13:19 pace -- this was walk 3.5/jog 1.5)
mile 3 ==>> 13:54 (mostly walking)
mile 4 ==>> 14:18 (all walking)
So, I got in 4.33 miles. Still not the more than half the 9.3 that I wanted to squeeze in before the Minnie, but done nonetheless. I know the stretching helped my hip a LOT, as did dropping my hip as I was wogging. I noticed as soon as I "lifted" it, it hurt -- just more confirmation for me that it might have to do with pulling the hamstring. Just glad to have done something, so that I won't disappoint Rhonda with a lousy pace and no endurance next Sunday -- OMG, 10 days away!!!

Rachel Glad to see ya stopping by. You can do it in the 4 months.

Why a 12 month wait if I may be so nosy! That seems incredible.

Sunny - I'm taking a rest day (total rest b/c I feel tired) and I'm skipping weights tonight. Tell me that's ok!!!!! I'm feeling guilty for one little rest/missed session :guilty:

Lynn - DELURK!!! I'm getting a new (new to me, but it looks like it has never been crashed) Mt. Bike tomorrow! I'm getting a 2002 Cannondale Jekyll 700. Yea!!!! I'll finally have dual suspension. My booty won't know what hit it. (Or didn't hit it in this case) Our big outdoor store is having a gear garage sale and some clinics this weekend. I'm going to try to sell my hardtail. Phil and I are teaching the intro to adventure racing class :thumbsup2 Participants get a $10 gift certificate, so EC said she was going to come to the class just to heckle me.

I am part of USAfit also...technically Albuquerque Fit. The best group of people to run with! The coaches are incredible, and the feeling of accountability to the group makes sure I am out there for the long runs on Saturdays. Our season starts Saturday...unfortunately I will be in Phoenix. We are taking our 2-year old daughter to the Wiggles...she's going to have an awesome time. That's ok tho, because I am still technically in recovery mode from my Marathon.

Ok, it is now official. I have signed up for the GOOFY AGAIN!! Going for 2! :cheer2: :cheer2:

Kevin (solotraveler) - feel free to ask any questions about Albuquerque.

Dave - I am sure that you and your family will make the right decision. We would love to see you there.

Sorry for everyone I missed. Things are busy for me.

Lots of PD for everyone who is nursing injuries.

Paul

Tiger Lily - it's a 12 month wait due to the public health system in Canada. There are no private clinics. Gallstones and Gallbladder removal are considered elective surgery, so no queue skipping.

Someone actually recommended that once a week I eat a really fatty meal, and as soon as the pain starts get myself to the emergency room for the morphine injection....because the more often you have to go in for pain management the more "urgent" your need for surgery becomes, and then you don't have to wait.

Tonight I printed out a four month calender and set my goals for training, eating etc. Looks good - 4 months was a lot longer than I thought. I can still run 3 miles - so my long runs will start with a 3 miler and I will build up from there. It gives me a chance to run up to 15 miles and then taper before run day.

I am going to try and include some swimming this time - it helps me recover from the runs quicker. Although I don't know if that's psychological or physical!

Good Morning Everyone: :surfweb:

Had a good run yesterday. Still have some soreness in the shins and now my left hip too (sounds similar to what you're dealing with Amy), but I'm dealing with it. I did 3.85 miles total with my warm up and cool down walks. For my 3 mile run I did a 5 min run/1 min walk pace, and it felt really good. It put me around 11-12 mpm. I figure if my shins continue doing OK I'll just start increasing my running intervals. I have another PT appointment on Friday and he's supposed to give me some stretching exercises.

Thanks for all the good wishes everyone on breaking the news to my family about wanting to run the WDW Marathon. I really appreciate all the good wishes from the TEAM. It really makes it feel like a TEAM. Don't worry Lily, I wasn't feeling any pressure from your message. Just good wishes.

I have been a little MIA again!

I did 4 miles instead of my scheduled 5 miles on Tuesday. As soon as I started out my left hamstring felt really tight. I decided to cut it down to 4 miles since my leg was bothering me.

Yesterday I was really feeling crappy with sinus/allergy stuff, so I skipped my crosstraining. Had it been a run/walk, I would have done it though. I rested a bit instead. I just feel guilty skipping crosstraining since the Minnie is just over a week away though!

Today is a 3 miler and strength.

I'll catch up reading all of your progress later!
