Wk of Apr 23--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

Carrie: Thanks for the report on the beans. I've been thinking that I'll be needing something during my LRs soon. I'm up to 5 miles starting this weekend. I have low blood sugar so I probably need to eat . I even bought one of those cool fanny packs from REI that somebody suggested. I can fit 1 water bottle and some nourishment.

Lily: Great reminder about the XT. Due to scheduling issues, etc I had not been doing as much yoga and KBX as I had in the past. I really notice a difference in my running....and soreness...when I am NOT incorporating regular XT. I am a firm believer that XT helps SOOO much! I'm back in the routine and getting ready to head down and do some Yoga right now :thumbsup2 .

I did get out there and run. I just took it easy and enjoyed the nice day (and seeing all the green lawns and flowering trees)! I ran for 35 minutes (threw in some walk breaks) and did 3.1 miles. A really nice comfortable pace and worked up a GOOD sweat! Thanks to the group.....you guys motivated me!!! :cheer2:

Hey Everyone: Well I made the first mention of my wanting to run the WDW Marathon to my DW. Over Easter I was talking with my BiL about running and I said that I wanted to run a marathon. My DW said "I didn't know you wanted to run a marathon." and I said how it's always been a dream of mine. Well, last night she asked me what I was thinking about and I said how I had this crazy dream of running the WDW Marathon. I said how I thought it would be a great 1st marathon to run, running through the parks with all the characters, and that I thought it would be a great reward for all the training I would have to do. She didn't make too much of it. It could be partly because I was also icing my shins down at the time, and it really doesn't look like I can run 3 miles let alone a marathon. But at least I brought up the idea... that's a first step isn't it?

I've been away from the boards for a couple of weeks, so I am again trying to catch up on everyone. I apologize if I leave anyone out.

Mel – Sorry you are having reflux issues :wizard: , but glad your foot is better. :cool1: GREAT job in getting through your 8 miles while not feeling well.

Amy, Jodi, Dena, goofyguy, Paul & Christy – Way to go on your races/walks last weekend :woohoo:

Krista – GREAT job on your 11 miles. It must really feel good getting to your taper. :thumbsup2

Lynnda – Sorry life has been getting in the way of your training. Hopefully things will get back to normal for you. :wizard:

Sara – If DH hasn’t trained & can’t keep up with you…I say leave him in the dust. :lmao:

Kevin – Good Luck with your finals! Hopefully, work will ease up while you’re getting through them. I’m still amazed how you both work & go to school full time, while still managing to get in all your workouts. :yay:

Dave – I’m glad the icing & stretching are helping your shins

Cam – Hope the migraine is better :wizard:

Dana – Hope your ankle is just a tight muscle & feels better soon. Good luck getting all your workouts in before heading to WDW. Have a GREAT trip :wizard:

Sunny – I like the idea of the EAT thread. :rainbow:

Carrie – Great pace on your 6 miles. Loved the story, certainly is a Small World. Thanks for the report on the sports beans, I’ve been very curious as to how they were. :Pinkbounc

For everyone counting down to the Minnie – I’m sure you will all do GREAT. Being apart of this inaugural event is so cool!

As for me...the week I spent with DH in Las Vegas was great. Got walk/runs in most mornings & then lots of walking the rest of the day. The cement (& sculptured cement) sidewalks were killers on my feet & ankles, but it was nice being out on the strip early in the morning when there weren't many other people out there. I had planned on using the fitness center some at the hotel, but they wanted $25 a day to do so & since I don't go to a fitness center at home, I couldn't see paying so much to do so on the trip. After telling a bunch of friends my plans for the WDW 1/2 they were very supportive & have decided they want to get out there & do some walking too. Most are also now planning on doing the local 5k in Sept. too. We have spent the last few weeks meeting at the high school track a few days a week. That has worked out great, everyone can go their own pace, yet we are all together. It has really helped keep me motivated. :cool1: The only thing that hasn't been going too well is DS ankles. He has a problem with them cracking occasionally when he walks, but now that he has been running & walking at the track the one ankle has gotten a lot worse. It cracks at every step & begins to bother him after a couple of miles. He has gone to the orthopedic doc. They did x-rays. The problem is that the tissue that holds the tendon in place is very stretched so it is causing the tendon to pop. The doc says it won't cause any damage to his ankle, which is good. The only way to fix it is to do surgery, but he is going to try an ankle brace to wear while running/walking and see how that feels. It doesn't hurt to the point where he can't walk or run, it is just annoying. I guess we will see how it goes with the brace the next few weeks and then take it from there.

Now that I feel like I have written a book....I will go try to catch up on what I have missed the last couple of weeks. :rotfl:

Have a GREAT week!

OK, enough about me! ;)

Cam - Hope your headaches get better! I can't stand al ittle sinus headache. DOn't know how you survive!

Dave - You hadn't told your wife yet???? Teach me to skim!!! Gosh it took me a year to go from first mention to let's sign up, but dh ran with me.

Karen - Those sculpted conc walks are rough, but they're good training for AK!

Lily, Sunny, and those who seem to be really busy - Hope thigns get better soon!

Amy - Glad you got out there! Regarding energy, I have lowish blood sugar too. I Gu every 4 miles and that works realy well for me. I think that's 2 pks of beans, but would need to double-check.

Minnie - Have funs with teh ASIC K's!

No one told me teh ASIC K's were pink!! Have to have them. I think it's getting close to time too! (Yes, I should be smacked. I know it's not about the color, but it is a nice bonus. ;) )

Cam - I'm a big believer in taking something as early as possible before the headache takes over your life. Hope it's gone by now, but if not, take whatever you need to make it go away! DH makes fun of my "pharmacy," but I won't get caught without what I need. And anytime you need a band fix, come on down! We're getting a new band director and will need all the help we can get.

Dana - Sounds like it wouldn't hurt to take it easy!

Carrie - Great job on the run last night!

Lily
- Thanks for the reminder on the cross training. I'd been doing my morning weights and stretching long before I started running and met this group, but it's good to know that routine fits right in!

Dave - Way to break the news to your wife! I tell DH big things the same way - just a slight mention at first... then ease into the real bombshell.

9 days till we leave for WDW!!! :cheer2: :woohoo: Tonight I'm going to do the bike - hope the heart and lungs remember how to be active...

Jackie

Hey everyone!!!!

Wow 2 posts in 1 day for me....lol

Just reporting in my time. I didn't feel like walking, had a huge headache coming on but walked 5 kms. 46 mins, 39 seconds. Not a great pace, I walked 5 kms yesterday and did 2 kms at lunch today so I was a bit slow at the 4k mark. I think tomorrow will be a rest day. :teeth:

Hope everyone has a great evening.

But isn't color the most important part :rotfl2:

Anyways this year's Asic K's come in two versions:

white/redish pink or white/silver/turquoise

Since my last Asics 2100s were navy/turquoise I went with the turquoise as it matches most of my running stuff. Yep color is important :rotfl2:

LOL Minnie - I've got your old ASICs right now. Feelining a blister coming on so it's time fir new shoes, though. ;) Going with teh pink. Ashamed to say that my running wear does not coordinate well. Just a warnign in case we meet in teh run. You can pretend not to know me. ;)

Hockey Kim - Yikes! Thats a lot of mileage! Rest sounds good. Hope your head is better!

Well, we started out tonight adn I asked dh how far we were going. He said,"I thought you knew." I replied, "The schedule says 50 min." Mind yuo, he's run once in the last 2 weeks due to being gone and sick. He says, "40 sounds good." That was plenty as I was still sore from yesterday. I was slow, but I finished. Was faster yesterday. Twice in a row is good for me, though, so I'm glad I got out again.

Wow, I love my dsl. I can post my info at night and it does not take me a half hour!

Can anyone advise about HIP PAIN?? I have, for a few years, even before serious training began, experienced hip pain after I run. I never feel anything during my run. The pain is usually only felt after sitting for a long period of time and then rising....but it always happens the evening and next day after I run. I used to only get it in my left hip, but now I feel it in both hips. It's not debilitating, but it is weird. It feels like it's right on the hip bone and surrounding muscle, it actually becomes tender to the touch. I've found some info online and it appears to be a common runner's complaint, but haven't found any way to resolve it aside from advil LOL. My Chiro couldn't fix it...and now I'm seeing a massage therapist. I could go to an Ortho, and will if it becomes worse, but wondering if anyone has experienced this? Any advice??? TIA!

Colleen-- I'm so happy to see you back :grouphug: I've missed you!

Sunny

Ahh! That is so sweet! I am glad to be back too. I really fell off my training this past month. I was totally unmotivated. I also had a sister and her two kids down from Canada over the Easter break  . Whew it is tiring being a host for 10 days. I took her out to the Smoky Mountains for a few days and we went to Dollywood, yeehaw! Actually, it exceeded my expections :sunny: , (which wasn't hard, because they were pretty low). We had a good time, but it is now time to get back at it.

FYI for all you people thinking about the Minnie marathon.... the All Star Resorts are coming up on Priceline for $36 a night :thumbsup2 . There are a few threads about it on the resorts board if you are a gambler. I half thought about it but thought I wasn't willing to take the chance. Good luck to all Cam, Tiff and all the rest of you Minnie runners!! :cheer2:

Sara, good to hear from you! :wizard: With the husband thing!

Colleen - Is Chicago in Oct? If you do it, you will be totally prepared for disney!! In fact, you could just do it as a training run for goofy! :teeth:

Hi MelR! :wave2:

Ah, you are too funny! I am still thinking about Disney, if I go back it will just be for the marathon. Are you thinking about going back?

I bit the bullet today and registered for Chicago! Ah, me :yay: and 39, 999 of my closet running buddies in the big city! :lmao: I will be sure to give a complete report if I come out alive!

Awww Dave, Dave, :sad2: You didn't sign up yet! :hyper: Man, what are you waiting for? You've just gotta sign up. You've gotta. You can do it, I KNOW you can.

Hi Lily: Thanks for the support. I'm waiting to make sure that the Disney trip in January works into the family plan. Oh, and to make sure my legs hold up. Just wait until I do sign up though!!! You guys will be the first to know for sure (or maybe 2nd after DW)!

Took a rest day yesterday and iced my shins. This week I decided to alternate run days and rest days to give my shins lots of time to recover.

Yesterday was xt so I did my 3 mile WATP tape & pilates. It's storming out so I guess it's the dreadmill for me today

Colleen-wow, I thought WDW was a big event. Chicago sounds huge but I bet it will be a blast! DH wants to take the camper to the smokies sometime soon & go to Dollywood/Gatlinburg. Glad to hear you had a good time. We'll miss you at the Minnie!

I am definately counting down the days till I leave for the Minnie. This is my first "girls weekend" since I've been married (11 yrs) so I am VERY excited & I think I am driving my friends crazy :teeth:

Time to wake up the bunch for school. Have a great day everyone!

Morning Everyone,

Last night it was a threadmill workout for me. I ran for 4 miles, actually I ran at 5.3 for 3.30 miles, the rest I did at a fast paced walk. I think I may have started to soon after eating - my stomach started to bug me......but at least I got the work done. :thumbsup2

Tonight is an outing for work, not positive that I want to go though......I don't really drink and everyone else seems to, can I handle three more hours of work related activity? I would feel bad if I didn't go though, just feel really awkward and feel like I don't belong around these people. :guilty:

Well, I am going to go for now - Everyone have a great day! and to all of the other admins out there Happy Administrative Professional Day :goodvibes

Jodi

Kim - What exactly is a twik? :confused3

Sunny - If you were to post an eating thread I would absolutely be posting. Goodness knows I need someone to help keep me accountable for the things I am eating lately!!

Carrie - What is a sports bean? I mean I know what GU is, but I still haven't figured out what you do with it. How you know when to use it, etc. I have never heard of a sports bean before.

Karen - I have had my ankle do the same thing since I started running Cross Country in High School. It used to drive me crazy when I would sneak out of the house at night, cause I'd be walking down the road with my ankle popping every single step. :teeth: As I grew up it went away, and I have just noticed it coming back now that I am running more. Mine has never hurt though. More noise than anything else. I hope your DS is able to find a way to run without it hurting. Surgery doesn't sound like any fun at all.

Amy - I feel you with the hip pain. I have buristis in both hips, but pretty bad in my right. The only thing I have ever found to help is this one specific stretch. You have to do it at least twice a day. Lay on your back with your knees bent like you are doing a sit up. The rest your right ankle on your left leg. Grab the back of your left leg and pull your left leg towards your chest. Then switch legs. HTH

Ok, well last night I went for my 30 minute run anyway. Unfortunately because it was still pretty warm outside I didn't want my almost 5yr old to ride his bike with me, and he wouldn't let me go without him. Don't you just hate the way kids can make you feel so guilty. So, I ended up with him and the baby in the double jogging stroller. Let me tell you, that thing is a bear to push up some of those hills. It was definately a workout!! Good news is that my ankles didn't hurt at all during the run, and didn't hurt when I got home either. My shin on my right leg was a bit tender, but I iced that after getting home, and I think it'll be just fine.

I am taking today off. We are having my DS's 5th birthday with family tonight since we won't be here for his actual birthday on Friday. I have cupcakes to bake, and things to get ready. I have to make sure our bags are packed and ready to go. Tomorrow I am meeting my Mom for a run. She has offered to wog with the kids while I get in 3 miles. I will check back in with everyone later.

Dana - You see, I met this guy named Jack and he told me he had these magic sports beans and they will make me run fast right to the end of the rainbow and find the pot of gold.... Sorry, a little loopy this morning! ;) Jelly Belly makes sports beans that are jelly beans that taste like Gatorade. They have electrolytes and carbs and such like a Gu, but htey are jelly beans. You have to find what works for you. I think MfM recommends every 45 min to and hour, which is about what I do too. Every 4 miles. SOme people can go longer and some can do mostly Gatorade/Powereade an dminimal food-tyoe stuff. Rule of thumb is that if you do Gu, or beans, you do mostly water. If you don't do somethign with electrolytes, you need to do a liquid like Powerade. Clear as mud? I don't worry about them until I hit the 5 to 6 mile runs.

Great job putting the steps in Jodi and Tiff!

Dave - I can't belive you'r edoing socks and shirts but are not yet signed up. You cracxk me up!

Colleen - It is VERY good to see you again!

I know- I must admit the thought crossed my mind that it is a little strange I'm doing socks and shirts but have not yet officially committed to the marathon.

Good Morning.

Dana:.....I think I should have spelt it Tweek....not sure how to describe it but he gets like a kink type pain sometimes.....boy that cleared that up eh :lmao:

wtpclc: I love the photo in your signature, it must have been a great feeling.
yes the headache is gone...thank you.

I was also wondering how Kim did in the Boston Marathon?? I am sure the info is here somewhere but I didn't see it.

Dh and I decided we will bike tonight, nothing to strenuous just a nice long bike ride along the lake. Legs are a bit stiff today, won't walk at lunch either today.

Trying to get a regular workout routine going, want to incorporate alot more stretching into the routine. Also I love the idea of the EAT thread, I am really struggling with this, since I now have high cholesteral I am modifiing what I eat and since I need to lose weight I am watching what I eat, but I know with more exercise I have to eat more or I will go into starvation mode. Man this is so hard sometimes. I still would like to lose 36 pds before the end of the summer so I can seriously start training for the 1/2.

Sorry to ramble on there....just thinking out loud :teeth:

Hope you all have a great day.

Kim
