Hello everyone!

For those new to us, we are a group of people who are planning to participate in walking/running events throughout the year. For most of us, the ultimate goal is to train and compete in the annual WDW Half/Full marathons. We'll also be posting news and training for various other events throughout the year. We range from non-running beginners to triathletes. Come join us, whether you're training for an event or walking/running for fitness!

New WISH Team members. If you read one thing over and over, believe this. Being part of this team is fantastic. Part of the ride you get for the event is what I call the roller coaster. There will be lots of ups and downs. The more you post here, the more you will find yourself enjoying the ride. It is an incredible journey. Don't be afraid, shy or whatever to come here and just post up anything. You don't have to know us right away, or all of us at all. You will get to know some of us. It makes the event you are enjoying have MORE meaning and we love to have you.

4 miles for me in 47:38. A couple minutes slower than my previous 4, but I did a different course...up and over the Ringling Bridge and back. I had to take DD14 to school at 7am for a band trip so thought I'd do something a little different. Wind was wicked at the top of the bridge, and as Angie mentioned, the humidity was thick!

:welcome: Donna, Lisa and Jennifer!

Weather :wizard: to everyone for tomorrow! Looks like it could get ugly out there!

ooo ooo! New week!!

Well Friday I did my 14-miler in 2hrs 36min. Actually, I think it was a bit longer than 14 miles because I tried putting my Garmin on my fuel belt and learned after nearly a mile that it wasn't picking up on the satellite (it read .25 but then picked up a straight line course to add more). Oh well some bonus milage! :cool1:

I stopped by Barnes and Nobles in the evening to pick up another copy of MfM. I have a copy but I wanted a copy to lend out (*clutches own copy*they can't have mine no no) to a friend. Well...they didn't have MfM, but needless to say I spend a good chunk of time in the running section and came out with *ahem*[whispers]six *cough cough* books. hehe :confused3 Don't know what happened there :rolleyes1 Got a Performance Nutrition for Runners book, the Ultra Marathon Man (for inspiration), Hal Higdon's marathon book, Jeff Galloway's marathon book, the Courage to Start, and the Need for Speed. I wanted to have all of these in my running library eventually, I just wasn't planning on getting them all at once  . Oh well! I'll have reading materials and inspiration for a long time to come. I'm thinking of getting Advanced Marathon (or something to that effect) once I have read through all of these, but I figured I had to hold back somehow.

Today was a really nice rest day. I did power yoga with a friend this morning...wow that was a first (i've done yoga, but not power yoga). Then she gave me an hour and a half massage. She used to be a practicing massage therapist, but let her certification run out while she was raising her boys and now just does it for friends. oooo that was nice. I am strangely sore on the right side of my body (neck, dehydrated back over my rib cage, front of my thigh, and calf). That's my stronger side, so I guess I've just been overcompensating with it - ouch! Then we went to Olive Garden (soup, salad, breadsticks rocks!) for a late lunch and then watched An Unfinished Life (good movie). Definitely a great relaxing rest day! Sadly I didn't get to go to the running store since this took all day, but I can go next weekend. I need to get some new shoes and another fuel belt/water bottle/hydration pack because it's getting hot and I dont like having to carry an extra bottle (it bruised my side ouch!).

Hope all is well and happy training!

Evening folks, got my LR in today, sort of. The weather was gorgeous today - it made a great change from all the of the snow we had dumped on us recently!

I opted to try a new route today for some variety. I have a book of hikes throughout Calgary that I picked a 4 mile route out from. Unfortunately the battery on my Garmin died at the very start of my run. I couldn't exactly follow the route map because some of the pathways were just not good for running (very narrow and steep) so I had to modify the run a bit and only wound up running 3.4 miles. Oops. I ran it in 40:27, so not quite my best pace. Still, the run felt great and I tackled a huge hill.

Tomorrow I'm helping direct runners at a local half marathon. Should be fun. Hope everyone enjoys the rest of their weekend!

Just stopping by for a quick update. Training this week was not the best. On Thursday I was supposed to do 3 miles and ended up stopping after 2 because of a horrible cramp in my side. This keeps happening to me and I plan to spend some time this week doing a little research in an attempt to figure out some ways to prevent it/run through it. Yesterday I did 4 miles, but at a much slower pace than recently. I am really amazed at how much slower I am on the TM! I kept thinking I would be faster without wind, hills, etc, but I think all of those distractions actually get me moving faster. I am really looking forward to getting outside this week as the weather improves and DH's days off correspond with my training days. (My DH works a very weird rotating schedule and I have to go to the gym on the days that he works so that I have someone to watch the kids. Every other week I get to do most of my training outside.)

In other news, I found out that DH will be going back to night shift (not his choice) and I am pretty bummed about it. He was on nights for over 5 years, but we just got a taste of the good life because he has been on days for the last 6 months. We knew that he might get bumped back to nights, but I am still really disappointed. Oh well, I'll just be hoping that he can go back to days in December.

Have a great week everyone!

Stopping by for a quick hello.

The rain has started here in Boston and every once in a while big snowflakes will mix in. They say the brunt of it will be over by tomorrow morning so as of right now, they (the royal they) are predicting wet and windy for the start of the marathon tomorrow. In the project management lingo, this is a known unknown. We know it will be rough; we just don't know how much.

Angie: thanks again for the nice word on the siggie! I originally just wanted something in my sig and couldn't think of anything so I thought of putting my progression in. Then I started adding the smilies. It's become something I look forward to each week. 3 weeks from now is the Minnie. I'm going to have to think of something else for my siggie after that!

After yesterday's effort, today will be 30 minutes on the bike with light resistance. Just enough to loosen up the legs. Allergies are kicking in for all of us here which is so not fun!

Have a great day everyone!! For those in races this weekend, let us know how it goes!!!

Just popping in to say that our first 5K was this morning, and it rocked! So much fun. :thumbsup2

I posted my race report on the other thread, for those who are interested. :)

Going for a nap now, but I'll catch up with y'all later on this afternoon.

TXAng - Great job on beating your time, like you I beat my expected time by nearly 5 minutes in my first 5K.

Nice buns, too! (on the shirt, that is)

Hi WISH Team!
I've got good news to report. I've managed a pretty successful training week last week and I am glad that it is all coming back. I must confess though that I really don't like going out and doing the exercising. What I like is coming back after I've finished.

I got my long walk in today. It's the longest I've gone in one shot since starting this whole thing (5 miles) and I did it without really thinking about pace or anything, just working on finishing. It took me a looong while to get to the end, but I eventually made it w/ a 19:30 min/mile pace.

I also realized I jumped up my mileage a lot this last week (from 12 miles to 22!), so I'm going to ease up next week. I'm not feeling any negative effects (Except one tiny blister that shot up today and achy feet around mile 3.5), but I also understand the need to pace yourself. I'm aiming for about 14 miles this next week, but with some speed training thrown in. So, we'll see :)

I have to say, I am super jealous of all of you doing the Minnie. I wish I didn't live at pretty much the furstest point you could get from Orlando and still be in the contental US. I will be cheering you all on from way over here though, I promise!

Hi,

It is official, dh and I are registered for the CDC! I am walking but not as much as I should. Those of you in the midwest know what the weather did to us. It totally bummed me out. BUT, today was better. 60 degrees! :thumbsup2

I took the kiddos to the zoo. We walked tons. Not a fitness walk, but at this point I count everything!:rotfl2:

Just a quick I am still here. I hope training for the Minnie and Pig is going splendidly for all. I will have to get back around here more often once training starts for the CDC or I will never make it!

Take care,
Maggie

Hi there, everyone. :wave2:

I haven't been around much for the last couple of weeks...travel during Spring Break and good ol' LTO.

Training has been spotty, and I'm getting nervous about it. It's only 3 weeks 'til my next event (Frederick Half Marathon) and I'm just not feeling 100% ready. {{sigh}} Oh well. Maybe a break in the weather will get me in the groove.

Would love to spend this evening Dissing, but can't. DH and DD have the flu. Don't know how DS and I are avoiding it, but I'm not complaining.

Time to rest. Did 10 loads of laundry today and needed 5 hours to pay the bills and balance the check book. I swear, these last few days, it feels like all I do is drag lead through sand.

Sorry to vent. I'll end this pity party now.

Hey guys! Just dropping in real quick to let you know that I updated the Flying Pig WISH Planning Thread this evening.

I'll try to do a real post and catch up with everyone later. Hope everyone had a great weekend, and congrats to everyone racing this weekend!

Steve

Good work on expanding your training, although that jump was pretty big. You would do well to take a week with lower mileage to help your body recover. When I trained for my half recently, I followed weeks that were new highs with a lower mileage week before building up again. Just remember to treat your body right.

Coco: did you rescue a golden retriever? My parents rescued one that was from Nebraska (they live in CO). Apparently the dog was chained outside in a junk yard for it's entire life and neglected for the most part. They've had the dog for 1 1/2 years and the dog is 6 years old. This dog has been my Dad's "savior." Mom says it's the best thing that's happened to Dad. Bailey makes my Dad have to go outside on walks, brush him, feed him and generally take care of him and get out of his chair. That's worth gold!

bekkiz: great job on the LR!!! :thumbsup2

KelNottAt: sorry to hear 1/2 the fam is sick! Have fun playing the Florence Nightingale routine!!

Angie: kudos on a great run!! Woo-hoo!

Lily: awesome job on getting back into the routine!! Glad to have you back.

It's raining pretty good here now. It's supposed to keep up all night. I did 30 min on the bike at a fairly easy pace considering yesterday's effort. Tomorrow morning I'm with my trainer and it's a holiday. Maybe I'll read a book and watch some of the marathon.

Have a great evening everyone!

Red Dragon (Martha) - Yes, I did rescue the Golden in the picture. Her name is CoCo and is the second rescue dog we adopted. It is twice as rewarding knowing the dog we adopted needed us more than we needed her. Although for me, she came along around the time my teenagers stopped wanting to do things with me.

Goldens are wonderful dogs, but they often want to be doing something with you...just like your dad's Golden. Goldens are not for the casual owner who just wants a dog that they chain up, they are love-puppies and attention hounds! I often take her to the local dog park where she spends more time socializing with the other people rather than the other dogs.

Richard

Hey, we have a Golden also. She is 7 1/2 and LOVES to go running with me. Sometimes she even gets a walk with DH. Just this afternoon DH was playing fetch with her. I have never had a dog that actually returned with the item so we could throw it again. She is an AWESOME dog and oh so gentle with the girls. They sit on her, lay on her, pull on her cheeks... nothing from the dog. GREAT GREAT DOG!

Just had to get my two cents in.

Training Report!!

Did 9 for LR run today and was a huge accomplishment considering the head on full force wind for the first 4.5. :yay: Of course on the back half the wind was at my back, so I guess that helped a little. Did it at 9:30 pace, ok considering I only ran once this week, not including my pathetic attempt yesterday. MINNIE is only 3 weeks ago, would love to really pump up the training the next 3 weeks, but Graduation is only 3 weeks away too, so we will see what happens.

Hope everyone's training is going well.

angie

bekkiz - Great job! It's great to be ahead of your curve isn't it? Glad to hear your loving your Garmin!
Angie - I have seen chiropractors for several years now and just like any other health practitioner you should do your homework: ask questions about treatment plans, their schooling, background. You can even check out the Florida Dept. of Health website under chiropractic medicine and check to see about their licensure. I've had both positive and (not really negative) so-so results, but it really has to do with their own individual school of thought regarding spinal manipulation. Ask your chiro to be to map out a plan of treatment for you and see if it is something your comfortable with. Good Luck!
Becky - I hope you have not injured yourself seriously, you might want to get it checked out if you can. Pixie dust heading your way!
Martha - Sounds more like a Steeplechase than a training run! And I'm loving my new recumbent bike, I had to look up at the monitor from my book now and then to check it was still on, it's soooo quiet!
Laurie - Great Run! Thats sooo cool you ran into a fellow DISer, just out of the blue!
Jackie - WOO HOO...NO PAIN! Here's to hoping that chapter is behind you!
Sunny - Pixie Dust to you and prayers for your injection holding out for awhile! "You're only 43?" he said? You should have taken him out for a "gentle" 10 miler. But kudos for you doing Mickey in '08...I'm soo jealous.
Judy - Glad to hear you don't have stress fracture, but Sinus Tarsi Syndrome stiil sounds painful. Hope orthotics work for you! "...patients do poorly on uneven surfaces, i.e., grass and gravel." Not to mention on and off ramps at WDW!
Bill - Wow, Timmy's already getting in 5 hrs of sleep at a time! Great effort on getting in some training!
Jennifer - Welcome to Team WISH!
Kiena - It's still a great job for getting out there and getting in 7 miles. Don't be too hard on yourself for having an "off" mile...you still did an AWESOME job!
Lisa - Welcome to Team WISH. Not only did you ran a race (still getting out an running a 5K by yourself is a race), but you won! Celebrate! You did a GREAT job!
Mel - Awesome job getting in 4 miles. With the air that thick, it probably felt more like 5.
Claire - B & N for some new reads, Olive Garden, a 90min massage? All that's missing is a Big Gulp of Diet Mt Dew, Bare Naked Ladies' Rock Spectacle, and a hammock and you have my perfect day!
Maggie - Woo - Hoo another DISer in the CDC!
Leana - Hope everything at work is going (or going to get)smoother for you. Sounds like a fun training, even without your Garmin. I love to hike, and I probably would have stopped to take some pictures.
Richard - We have a Golden, too. We named her Belle. I wanted to name her Lilo (even though she acts more like Stich) and she is our furry cruise missle. She is sooo cute and soooo good with ourDD 11 who has special needs. She was a gift from a breeder (long story). We also adopted a rescue dog. Our other is Casey, a border collie/chow mix that is more like the DW and my dog. She like our kids just fine, but prefers to cozy up with us.
One of my DW's favorite saying is "Rescuing a dog may not change the world, but you will change the world of that one dog."

Training Note:
Early last week, I felt sooo drained and tired, sore, irritated...that I may have overexerted myself. I HAVE lost a lot of weight, but I may be trying to do tooo much as of late. So I did back off of my "formal" training. I did do XT by doing manual labor, but stayed off of the TM until Saturday. Biked 30 min Friday on my new recumbent, TM 2 miles of brisk walking and 3 sets of dumbell/balance ball work on Saturday, and a cardio DVD tonight, ALL after working. I'm going in tomorrow night from 11pm-7:30 AM for OT so with the weather being nice (cross my fingers) I will get out for a brisk 4 mile walk (maybe do a little running, maybe) before I have to sleep. Then I have the rest of the week until Saturday off. Whew!
Good Luck and Happy Training!

Quick training update - I'll catch up with everyone tonight after work...

I ran 3 miles on the TM this morning. It was truly the best run I've ever had. The only reason(s) I'm not still running are (1) I have to go to work; and (2) reason took over and convinced me that my body probably wasn't up to running 13 miles on the TM yet! But I really did feel like I could. I took one walk break during the first mile, then when the TM hit 1.0 I started running and ran the rest of the way! I RAN FOR 2 WHOLE MILES WITHOUT STOPPING! So to celebrate...

I JUST REGISTERED FOR THE HALF!!!!

Be back later...

Jackie
