DD and I are planning a trip for early January 2017. Best fit for her and DSonIL's work is Jan. 1-8, and we'll want a 2 BR BW view at our home resort of BWV. With many people having Monday Jan. 2 as their New Year's holiday, and Marathon Weekend starting Thursday 1/5, do y'all think we'll have trouble getting what we want? I plan to be online at 8 AM ET Feb. 1!

I think you will be fine with many of your days but might have a limited selection for January 1st. Have you been checking the Resort availability tool?

We are in the same boat as you, hoping to make a reservation from the 1st through the 8th. I'm hoping people still decide to go home on Sunday night! Especially since I really want to switch to the Poly at the seven month mark.

To further complicate things, it appears that public school kids may not have to go back until Wednesday!

No, I haven't been checking the RAT since the 11 month + 7 day window that includes 1/1/17 wasn't open yet. But I will start checking this weekend. Hopeful that enough folks will go home 1/1 (saving 1/2 as a day to recover from their vacation :rolleyes1) for us to get what we want!

We were at the parks January 3rd - 7th this year, and the parks were still packed. January 1st this year was on a Friday and we arrived on the following Sunday. Crowds were high until we left, and we left before the marathon, so those crowds weren't even in the mix yet.

Lots of South Americans in the park also.

I think this year saw a confluence of factors, a perfect storm, if you will, that surrounded the first few days of the year:
  • New Year's Day was on Friday, making a looong holiday weekend
  • Last call for Osborne lights
  • Debut of Star Wars-themed fireworks
  • and, of course the marathon
But, I hear a voice ask (protest), the marathon is held every year about this time. Why would its impact be different from other years? I suspect some runners arrived earlier -- a day or two or three earlier than they typically do. I saw more people running on Saturday, Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday than I recall in years past, and saw many more "26.2" stickers on cars in the parking lots early in the week. Remember, now that there's a 5km run on Thursday to kick things off, the Marathon "weekend" starts earlier than it had prior to 2014. I think Wednesday is now the official arrival day.

Signs were up starting midafternoon saying that the ST parking lot was full, and to park at AK or EC. I attribute the large crowd at ST in large part to the second and third bullet items supra.

I can't say there won't be another alignment of the planets like this next year, but the first two days of 2017 are back in Adventure Season.

We just went Jan 2-8 this year and it seemed like the crowds hung around until about Tuesday. I booked our home resort (SSR) around 9 or 10 months out with no problem (to be sure to have something) and didn't bother trying to switch anywhere at 7 months. Decided we like SSR just fine, the points there are reasonable and didn't want / need the stress of looking for availability someplace else at 7 months. This was our first time going in January anytime other than MLK weekend. I had sort of expected most people would head home by late Sunday & was a little surprised how the crowds seemed to linger into the following week. Maybe airfare stayed high thru the weekend so people decided to stay longer? We overlapped with some of the marathon arrivals by a couple of days but they didn't seem as numerous as the lingering holiday crowds.

I just saw that my kids have Christmas break until 1/6/17 so I'm tempted to look at a trip for a few days the second part of that week. Perfect Christmas present!

I booked NYE through Friday this morning. :lovestruc

We aren't due back to school until the 9th.

right now it's looking like BWV is booking full except for 1 bedrooms. I think you will be on line at 8 am the next couple days... but there's a good chance they are walkers moving to the marathon or MLK...

Oh yes, I'll be online before 8:00 and ready to submit my request right away at 8:00 sharp. Still hoping for BW view but if we end up with Pool/Garden view we'll be fine. I spent an hour or more watching bald eagles perched on the Swan from a Pool/Garden view once!

The 2BR lockoffs pool/garden view were available still mid-afternoon today but boardwalk view and standard were not available. Good luck!

SCORE! Thanks for the encouragement and good wishes, KAT4DISNEY, and thanks also to supersnoop, who posted in another thread some time ago the web address for The Official NIST US Time (nist.time.gov). I set everything up on the DVC website and watched that site on my cell phone, and as soon as it hit 7:00:00 I hit Continue - and got our 2-bedroom Boardwalk view for our dates! Looking forward to a very special trip with DH, DD, and DSIL. We're all doing the WDW 5K, and DD is running the half! :jumping1:
