With kids on a budget airline

Every budget airline I've seen charges for seat selection. What do they do if you're flying with kids? I'm assuming that they just force seat selection on you (I wouldn't want to leave my kid to whomever te airline pairs him with anyway), but I wanted to see if I might be wrong.

Check with your individual airline. You don't say what specific ULCC you're referring to. Spirit does not at this time guarantee that you will sit with your kid. Frontier guarantees that anyone under 14 will sit adjacent to an adult in their travelling party. I seem to recall but can not find it right now that adjacent could mean in middle seats in consecutive rows. My recommendation would be to spend the money and pay for seat assignments.

Check the airline's fine print. They will usually try to sit families together, but if there aren't enough seats together, your kid might be sitting on their own.

My husband and 2 kids flew Breeze Airlines in January. Our son is 10 and when picking seats online, they allowed us to pick seats together for free in the "family section" which was towards the back of the plane. Worked out great that they didn't have to pay to sit together.

Southwest Airlines will do family boarding if you do not purchase EBCI. They board between groups A and B. It's 2 adults with the child/children under 6 who can board at this time. If your kids are older, you board according to the boarding group assigned on your boarding pass. Buy EBCI or pay for a seat assignment if you want to ensure you can sit with your kids.
