WISH Away the Pounds January Challenge -- Jumpstart the New Year -- Everyone Welcome!

Morning all! Fly-by post with the QOTD and I'll be back later after some errands to chat more!

QOTD for Wednesday January 8, 2014:

What are the top 5 tools in your weight loss/healthy lifestyle tool kit??These can be both tangible and other. If you are just starting and don't have 5, just list what you have.

Loving everyone's list - especially the hydrating visual. I have to remember that as I am a diet Coke fanatic but not so great with water.

My five:
(1) newly acquired BodyFit Media armband. This is kind of a more expensive FitBit. I looked at the Fitbit very closely and asked for one for Christmas, but DH did more intensive research and bought this instead. I love it! It is more intrusive than the Fitbit in that it is an armband that you have to wear and not a clip, but it tracks EVERYTHING! Very accurate, almost scarily so. Also connects with MFP, which I find so useful. In less than a week of wearing it, I have lost a little more than 3 pounds. I take it off for swimming but can manually add those calories back in. Great product! It is the newer generation of the Body Bugg that people on the Biggest Loser used to wear.

(2) My Fitness Pal. Have to track those calories! Love the barcode scanner, which I use constantly.

(3) My university's awesome fitness center/swimming pool. Indoor track, tons of cardio machines, and POOL! :cool1:

(4) This site/reminders that I will be going to Disney in less than 10 months. I have never been motivated as much as I am now that our trip is booked and our countdown has begun.

(5) This is a toss up between Nerd Fitness and DH. Both have helped me start look at some easy bodyweight training routines that are short and doable but I believe will really show me some results. I have always neglected this part of fitness before, so I have been careful to try to add weight/strength training in. So far, so good!

Thanks to all who have shared their lists. Lots of great ideas! :)

QOTD: My top 5:

1. My WISH friends! They give support, encouragement, and a kick if I need it. :thumbsup2

2. Planning my meals and always having healthy choices available. I've known for years that I can't have certain things in the house (ice cream for one!) so we don't. This often leads to complaints from house guests that we have nothing good to eat. :)

3. Jeff Galloway's training plans. They have helped me to stay on track with my running workouts and complete 3 half marathons with number 4 in 11 days and number 5 next month.

4. A supportive family. They give me the time and space I need to do these workouts.

5. My Ipod. My constant running companion.

Rose, I'm sorry that you have to get a biopsy and hope everything goes well.

Bryana, I'm sorry for your loss. I'm glad you are taking care of yourself and are able to connect with friends at the funeral.

Good luck to all the marathon weekend participants this weekend!

Hi Pamela! Good to see you are doing well and keeping busy as usual.

I'm on a roll! :thumbsup2:banana::hippie::cheer2::woohoo:

SO glad to hear that!

1. journaling
2. zumba
3. nuts
4. sugar free chocolates
5. my Hubs and family - for loving me no matter what..

Happy Hump day!

Great list! What kind of SF chocolates do you buy? I found one for DH that is really tasty and doesn't cause any undue gastric distress, but it is pretty expensive and now that my local Market Basket has stopped carrying it, I need to drive all the way to Trader Joe's to get it.

Hmmmm.
1. My 32 ounce Nalgene bottle. I really am not a fan of water and don't really drink a lot of anything to be honest, so I have been filling my pink bottle up and making sure I drink at least one a day.
2. Pinterest. I love pinterest for meal planning.
3. My ipod. Keeps me going when I am struggling or need some motivation.
4. My running shoes.
5. My 8 Minute Meditation book.

****
Hope everyone is having a great Wednesday. I am having a biopsy done this afternoon. Boo. Hopefully it won't hurt too much afterwards. And I find out if I have to have an endometrial biopsy. Fun times at my house.;) At least it is warming up a little bit.:cool1:

Prayers that your biopsy results are all clear Rose!! Love your list!

Great list! Thanks for sharing those great things. I'm definitely going to try to find something about Nerd Fitness!

YAY for us!!

Hi Pamela! Good to see you are doing well and keeping busy as usual.

Thanks! I was so glad to see your name here!

Okay friends, the cooking marathon continues! I've currently got four mexican meatloaves in the oven, two jumbo butternut squashes are roasting to get ready for the soup, I've got everything prepped for a batch of hamburger soup later this week, taco meat cooked and seasoned and cooling for the freezer, double batch of split pea soup done and cooling, a batch of ham bone broth cooking for the freezer, and I'm ready to peel two bags of apples for homemade applesauce.

Oven timer is beeping at me.... gotta run!...............P

Yay someone else on mfp. Add? My username is Laurahamm96 :D

Hey there! I have never used MFP for anything but tracking so I do not even know how to add anyone or even what my user name is (I log in on my phone automatically). If you can point me in the right direction with a PM, I will do my best! I do like it much better than other tracking apps I have used in the past. :)

Thanks for the good thoughts. :) The biopsy today was for a hinky spot on my skin. It took a couple stitches, but doesn't feel too bad. Friday I have to have an ultrasound to see if I need another biopsy (different issue). I will find out next week. Hoping by this time next week to have all this doctor stuff behind me. :)

Again, wanted to get take out, but stuck with the plan and we had buckwheat crepe fajitas for dinner. It was the first time I made crepes and it was pretty easy. They had a very strong flavor--the buckwheat I guess. I think I might use the leftovers for dessert crepes on Friday as a treat.

Have a great night!

QOTD for Wednesday January 8, 2014:

What are the top 5 tools in your weight loss/healthy lifestyle tool kit??These can be both tangible and other. If you are just starting and don't have 5, just list what you have.

Hmmmmm, good question.
1. Computer/Internet/Pinterest Sometimes I think that half the "fun" of the diet is looking for new recipes and trying them, or finding off plan recipes and trying to adapt them. If I wasn't a hazard in the kitchen I would do more of that.
2. Supportive Husband
3. Supportive Co-workers (and WISH friends!) They have been so awesome and respectful of my diet (helps that the boss is doing it too!) and I really appreciate it.
4. My awesome food scale. For several years now I have been asking for a food scale that I can use with a dinner size plate and still be able to read the weight. My inlaws got me this one for my birthday-- http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/1/1...d-scale-adjustable-digital-tower-readout.html
25099340998060p

5. Aria bathroom scale. I am an everyday weigher and this scale is really awesome for me to really see my progress and know when I need to get tougher on myself.
6. GOODWILL! Having a great, cheap place to buy new clothes for those in between sizes is so great. What is the point of losing weight if you are just going to hide it under too big, baggy clothes?

Sorry if this is obvious, but what exactly is the poof fairy? :confused3:
She is the Tag Fairy's evil twin! Here is a Poof Fairy Avoidance PSA: When I am doing a long post-- like most of mine here I will stop every few mins and click Control and A. This will highlight the entire post, then I right click and select Copy. That way if the Poof fairy comes along it is still on my clipboard and can be pasted back. If it is a particularly long or insightful post (of course all of my posts are insightful! :rotfl2: ) and I have to leave the computer then after I copy I open up a new email (my email program is always running) and paste it there. That way if someone else comes along and uses my computer or I get distracted with something else I have a backup to my backup. Believe me I learned all this the hard way! :badpc:

(now a CTRL + A/Copy)

That sounds AWESOME! Truly. The problem with living in NYC is we don't have any Walmarts. I'm missing living in FL for that reason alone! :rotfl:

But, I am heading this weekend to Christmas Tree Shops to do some after-Xmas shopping. Maybe they'll have a pink tree there! :lmao:
NO WALMART??? :scared1: I don't think I could function. The last place I lived didn't really have anywhere to shop BUT the Walmart!

I have seen pink trees at Walmart, Target, Big Lots, Kmart, pretty much any of the big stores. I think they also had a purple tree that we debated getting at the time. Now I wish that we had.

When I was in Memphis this summer, I actually made sure to go to a diner and get an Elvis =P And of course I have had Fluffernutters!! I'm actually not a big Fluff fan. I did make a 9 combo sandwich one time - which, for those of you who don't know, is peanut butter, cookie butter, and nutella on one side, and then honey, strawberry jam, and fluff on the other side. Let me tell you, it makes for one HELL of a sandwich. You can see it here:

http://cheezburger.com/7667768832

DO NOT ATTEMPT!!! :rotfl:
I have seen that on Pinterest!

Don't hate me, but.... they do... http://www.waldenfarms.com/products/spread_peanut.html

LOL I've never had Walden Farms, but I know people who swear by it.
I kind of figured they did. I think maybe I will just buy some PB DiVinci syrup the next time I make and order and see if that is any good.

Happy Wednesday, everyone! Today is actually National Male Watcher's Day. No, I'm 100% serious. I have one of those calendars that tells you about the weird holidays in America. Today is especially strange. Google it if you don't believe me! It is also Bubble Bath Day - so go take one and relax!
:rotfl: Just a friendly reminder that if you combine those 2 holidays into one you could be arrested!:lmao:

**********************

Happy Wednesday all!! After dropping DS at school and running some stuff to the transfer station, I hit the Market Basket to the tune of $305 !!!:crazy2: YOWZA! That being said, about $40 was stuff for the Robotics team dinner that I am scheduled to make this weekend.... plus I bought some supplies to do a cooking day today.... double batch of split pea soup is already going, next up I'll make a triple batch of meatloaf, a double batch of butternut squash soup, and prep the veggie for a beef stew for Friday night.

Off to chop, dice, mix, stir, etc!! TTYL......................P
I wish I had half of your energy!:bitelip:

Crud Monkeys! I was going to have my usual long and insightful post but I just remembered that my house cleaner is coming tomorrow. I have a friend that does house cleaning and when I went back to work I told DH that if I am working I am not cleaning toilets! So she comes in and does the bathrooms, a good floor scrubbing and usually some dusting or other things as needed. But I have to go and clean before she can clean so not sure I will make it back here tonight.

Had a good day-- stayed on plan (no peanut butter) and went to the grocery store so I have enough stuff to at least get through the weekend.

Everyone have an awesome Thursday and stay ON PLAN!!

Woohoo! It warmed up enough to snow.:rotfl: Just a little bit. The temps are supposed to continue upward to a more normal winter for us.

Tonight I am going to take an intro spin class. They are supposed to teach you how to adjust the bike, etc. I have ridden a bike before, but never taken a class. I am hoping it warms up enough to walk outside after work. :)

Have a great Thursday!

Good morning all! :goodvibes

A friendly reminder that tomorrow is weigh in day. I have my PM box all cleared out and I'm ready for those awesome numbers to come rolling in -- good luck! :smickey:

3. My local community center with the indoor track, weights, river and pool and enough fun classes to always have something new to try -- definitely will be taking more advantage of that this year.

QOTD for Thursday, January 9, 2014:

Its a toss up between over eating on bready foods and drinking diet sodas.

I've never been a fan of buckwheat. I can remember as a child thinking that my Grandmother's pancakes were yucky....when I was older I realized that they were buckwheat. I have been tempted to make crepes but always shied away. Glad to hear they were easy.

All kinds of great answers! ITA with #6! Love my thrift stores clothes! Glad you have such great tools at hand!

:rotfl: Just a friendly reminder that if you combine those 2 holidays into one you could be arrested!:lmao:

LOL!!:lmao:

I wish I had half of your energy!:bitelip:

I'm sure you do! And I'll admit, by 6pm last night after nearly 9 hours of grocery shopping and cooking and washing dishes, I was DONE!

More good thoughts here. Hopefully everything comes back looking great.

I got the gift of an every-other-week house cleaner a few summers ago (just 2 hours every other week) and I can remember having to go a bit nutty with the "precleaning".... but when I was done and then she was done... the place was sparkling! I did the picking up, beds, dusting.... she did bathrooms and floors (mopping and vacuuming). So thumbs up to a sparkling house for you! :thumbsup2

Us too! We are looking at mid 40's for the weekend! Hopefully the skating rink that is our driveway right now will melt!

Tonight I am going to take an intro spin class. They are supposed to teach you how to adjust the bike, etc. I have ridden a bike before, but never taken a class. I am hoping it warms up enough to walk outside after work. :)

Have a great Thursday!

Definitely take the time to make sure your bike is adjusted right. I "poo-pooed" the adjusting for my first class and I'm sure it contributed to my "never again" feelings about spin class!

Good morning all! :goodvibes

OUTSTANDING list!! You win! :rotfl: BTW, I shared your story about how much you've been using your ActiveLink, etc with one of my members this week who was debating about buying one.... and she BOUGHT IT! So thanks for the help and inspiration!!

Good luck to everyone tomorrow! :yay:

Have a WONDERFUL day!

*******************************

Morning all!!

Well, got three crockpots cranking along with pork loin for this weekend's robotics meal (I'm contributing pulled pork sandwiches) and of course, when I got home from dropping of DS, the circuit had blown and two of the three crockpots had shut off. THANK HEAVENS I wasn't gone all day! That would have been a lot of $$ wasted! But I was only gone 40 minutes, so I was able to change things around so they are all now cooking along. I'll get them cooked and shredded today. Then on Sunday, when I'm gone, DH can just warm the meat and add the bbq sauce. (Think he can handle that??? :rolleyes1).

BTW, do you think that 20 pounds of pulled pork is enough to feed about 40 people? There will also be a vegetarian dish (probably macaroni and cheese) and another side (maybe salad) that another person is bringing.... plus I'll be bringing a dessert (ice cream sandwich cake). I'd rather have leftovers than run out.

Time to get another load of laundry in and do some paying work! TTYL...........P

What is the most UNHEALTHY thing that you do? Do you plan to change that and if so, how?

Its a toss up between over eating on bready foods and drinking diet sodas.

I eat out more then I should. I have changed my ways in that it FITS into my allowed calories. (Still losing weight and all) but it's still not healthy.

I tend to cook more in better (warmer) weather. When spring comes- I eat better (home cooked) more. I need to somehow let that cooking at home more often spill into winter.

Good morning all! :hyper:

Today is National Apricot Day! Apricot actually means precious in Latin. I think I might pick up some dried ones on the way home! It is also the day, back in 1493, when Christopher Columbus mistook manatees for mermaids... He described them as "not half as beautiful as they are painted" :rotfl2:

Last night was quite a whirlwind - I got home, had a GREAT workout, hopped in the shower... and by the time I finished my shower, my heat had turned off COMPLETELY!!! :furious:

I am really proud of myself because after lots of angry calls to my super, and eventually staying with my sister, I hadn't even eaten dinner yet. It would have been really easy to go eat my feelings and have a bunch of cookies or get some fast food on the way home. But, I ate my sandwich that I had been saving, with fruits and veggies and watched some TV and went to bed.

But, the temps are supposed to warm up today - a whopping 30 degrees by the time I get home from work!!! :cool1: Nevertheless, I'm buying a space heater tomorrow. Has anyone else experienced heating issues in their homes?

I love knowing about silly holidays like that! Where does one buy that calendar??? Or what should I google?

I have a friend who was homeschooled and her mom used to give my family these calendars. I asked her about it and it turns out she made them herself! I googled it and it looks like most of her info came from this website:

http://homeschooling.about.com/cs/unitssubjhol/a/fundaysjan.htm

But, I'll be sure to write the fun and interesting ones on here when I remember to! :)

Happy Wednesday all!! After dropping DS at school and running some stuff to the transfer station, I hit the Market Basket to the tune of $305 !!!:crazy2: YOWZA! Could not be more on the money with this one. Totally forgot about Goodwill! Last year, I was literally on Facebook BEGGING people for some shorts to wear that wouldn't fall off of me. #weightlossprobs

Oh no... is my 23-year-old-ness showing? :rotfl:

Yeesh. You are really good at these questions!!

Eat in my bed. I live alone and so (especially when there is no heat), it is really easy to eat while checking things out on my computer, and snuggling under all of my covers. I'm always sitting up, but I really should be eating at my table - that's why I bought one!! LOL

Its on my list of habits to change/start, and I do think having heat will help.

Bet you were all thinking I'd fallen off the face of the earth, didn't ya? :goodvibes Boy do I HATE when that little thing called work intereferes with my life! :furious:

Just wanted to check in before I hit the road for Marathon Weekend this afternoon, (2 Halfs in 8 weeks...what was I thinking?! :scared1:) and to officially put myself out there as the newest member the blogger world! Yup! I FINALLY pulled off the labor of love I started tossing around a year ago. Please visit often and leave comments! Feedback is always a good thing.

Take care everyone, hit those goals, and keep your fingers crossed for me. I'll be right back!!

I LOVE BUTTER and Salt.. that means most stuff gets buttered and salted that I eat! Um I don't know if I can give it up or I guess if I even want to give it up..

P - I just buy the Whitman's dark chocoalte assortment and eat one a day after my lunch.. I just need to feel like I am no missing out so that little bit does the trick and doesn't send my system into shock.. I have also tried the Atkins M & M's and they are really good - can't even tell they are fake ones! I've subbed them in trail mix and no one knew! :)

PS I love Goodwill too! 90% of my closet is 4.99 or less if I get the right colored barb..

Ditch the diet! Terrible stuff in that! How about switching over to unsweetened iced tea or seltzer? My chiropractor is hassling me about giving up seltzer, but I know it is a better alternative to Diet Coke!

How about trying the crockpot in the fall/winter. It is SO NICE to come home to a yummy, warm delicious dinner that is all cooked and ready for you! I've got a few healthier crockpot recipes over on the recipe thread.

Funny! DD always like to think that she is a mermaid (swimmer with looooong hair).... don't think she wants to compare to a manatee though! :rotfl:

Happy Apricot day! Don't have any here.... do you think a prune would be an adequate substitute??:lmao:

Last night was quite a whirlwind - I got home, had a GREAT workout, hopped in the shower... and by the time I finished my shower, my heat had turned off COMPLETELY!!! :furious:

I am really proud of myself because after lots of angry calls to my super, and eventually staying with my sister, I hadn't even eaten dinner yet. It would have been really easy to go eat my feelings and have a bunch of cookies or get some fast food on the way home. But, I ate my sandwich that I had been saving, with fruits and veggies and watched some TV and went to bed.

And hang onto that PROUD feeling you had last night (and I'm sure again this morning) when you realized that you weren't going to let a difficult situation take ahold of you and make you lose control! Put is somewhere special in your brain. Then pull that feeling out when you need some inspiration to make the RIGHT choices!!

Think of it this way. If you had eaten emotionally last night, you still would have been frustrated and your heat wouldn't have magically been fixed and you would still have been at your sister's house.... but in addition to that you would have felt guilty and out of control. Instead you feel TRIUMPHANT!

But, the temps are supposed to warm up today - a whopping 30 degrees by the time I get home from work!!! :cool1: Nevertheless, I'm buying a space heater tomorrow. Has anyone else experienced heating issues in their homes?

Glad to say that I haven't had any heat issues here other than a few significant storms that knocked out power for many days in a row. Buy the SAFEST space heater you can afford and be SUPER-DUPER careful where you put it and how long you leave it on. DO NOT to sleep with it on and NEVER leave the house with it plugged in!!

THANKS! That will be fun!

Are you training for a state fair competition??? Or do you secretly have your own cooking show???

:rotfl: Neither.... just like to do batch cooking when I have the chance (and the ambition). I actually despise cooking but it is a necessity of life, so I try to make it as fast and easy as possible. Yesterday's marathon gave me 5 dinners with leftovers ( 3 meatloaves, taco meat, and hamburger soup)and at least 14 lunches (butternut squash soup and split pea soup), plus I chopped some and put it in the freezer for ham fried rice and we all enjoyed the big batch of applesauce last night (with a bit left for today). I was actually wishing I had bought a bit more stuff because I could have had the time to do maybe a veggie lasagna or something... but oh well.

Yeesh. You are really good at these questions!!

Wish I could take full responsibility, but my job as a WW leader makes me privy to lots of great "think about it" type questions.

I'm guilty of this as well.... especially my evening snacks!

Glad to see you back with us and I'm excited to read your blog!

As long as you are counting your butter the way you should, don't stress about it too much. But be careful with the salt.... too much salt in your diet can do baaad things to your body.

I'll have to look around for those Atkins M&Ms for DH!

I NEVER hit the right color barb at the GW.... NEVER!

**************************

Okay friends! Lunch was delicious (split pea soup, a small salad, and a bit of turkey). I did some cleaning and organizing this morning (loooong overdue) and now I'll move onto folding laundry and getting tonight's dinner started (hamburger soup.... usually a crockpot meal, but the crockpots are full of pork for the weekend). The men have to eat early before robotics, so the soup needs to be ready to eat by 4:30.

Got a fresh cup of green tea here.... time to move along! BBL to chat...P
