I installed a link-sys wireless access point last week and I'm having connection speed issues.

When I enable the wireless network, it starts out at 54/48/ or 36Mbps (using a wireless g access point and card)

After a while I'm down to 1 or 2 Mbps. Signal strength is always good or excellent.

The WAP is connected to a router that is connected to my cable modem. They are upstairs directly above where I use my laptop (about 15ft away).

Any ideas on how to stabilize my connection speed?

Do you have a 2.4Ghz wireless phone or baby monitor? Those can kill a wireless signal. We have a 900Mhz phone just for that reason.

For some strange reason when we run our microwave our signal goes wonky.

We've found that to be more of a problem as well. Currently I am only at 18.0 and my signal strength is very good.

The only other time I ran into this with my brother when he was having issues with his internal modem card not "talking" with the router correctly. And sadly for the life of me I cannot recall why. I'll shot him an e-mail and find out though.

Just to piggyback on this question...

On the same setup as the OP anyone know why my computer gets a 54Mbps connection while my son's computer only gets a 24Mbps connection. The computers are about 6ft apart in the same office. The router is maybe 25 yards away.

Signal stregnth usually reads excellent or very good on both machines.
