win an entire hotel for a weekend

Thanks! Did you know there is a Hampton Inn on the oceanfront of the Outer Banks! Maybe we can get a trip this year afterall.:thumbsup2

Yikes. Approximate first prize retail value = $22,600. Won't you get taxed about 50% of that? That's a pretty expensive 2 night stay.

Federal Income Tax would be about $5,500 plus any State Tax on the $22,000.

What if you donated the prize to your church's youth group?

Talk to your tax adviser.

If you got rid of the 100 rooms for the weekend, you'd still be stuck with the 100 weekend stays for four. That would be hard to donate to a youth group.

Taxed? You get taxed on prizes you win in the States?

I wonder what happens when someone from another country wins a prize.

Yes, and be careful, you may in Canada too. It looks like lottery winnings are not taxed in Canada, but sweepstakes sometimes are depending on how its been set up.

Also, you can be reimbursed for gambling winnings via treaty, but the U.S. has some really odd international tax law (which is unlike any one else's tax treaties), you may be responsible for U.S. income taxes on winnings earned in the U.S.

Thanks for the information. :thumbsup2

One would think the more contests I enter, my chances of winning something increases. Unfortunately I think Murphy's Law works against me. I have yet to win a thing! :lmao:

I actually hope I DON'T win the grand prize (I don't even HAVE 100 friends!! lol...) but the first prize is pretty sweet!!

If you actually read the official rules, you don't really win a hotel stay for 100 people for 2nts. They give you 200 certificates that are each good for one night stay. So you could book 100 rooms for 2nts at the same hotel, but it appears you don't have to.

LOL - they probably do not want 100 rooms of people partying over 2 nights! :lmao:

I just signed up too. I also just posted on a "did you ever win" thread that i think was started a while ago but resurfaced. Would be nice to read a Dis frend one ; )
