Will they cancel fireworks with this drought?

Keep seeing a drought for central florida (no mention of WDW) and was wondering if fireworks will go on, we dont leave until August but it may be better or worse by then.

I hope they don't. We are there next week. But I can understand if they do.

When I took the KTTK tour in March, our guide said that they actually spray down the whole area back there with water. I "think" he said they have a sprinkler system that sprays for an hour, but that if it is especially dry, they will spray longer. It was something like that at any rate...

We were there several years ago when WDW and Central Florida were in the middle of a real bad drought. There were grass fires around WDW. You could actually see some of them from the MK. The stmoke caused a haze at he parks. Even with all of this the fireworks went on.

The only thing that was closed due to the drought was the sprinklers at Ariels Grohtto(sp) and Donald's Boat. You could still go in but the water was turned off. Some of the fountains may have be closed also but I don't remember.

I was there during a drought. It was the first time I took my daughter to disney. After telling here about the amazing fountains at epcot, they were all turned off. I was so disappointed. I do understand why they did it, but it still angered me. The fireworks were still going though.

I'm not an expert, but all I've noticed during droughts is things like fountains and stuff being turned off. Our 1st stay at the WL the geiser was off b/c of a drought.

I doubt they cancel the fireworks. We've seen Illuminations and Wishes the last couple of days and the locals tell us there is a drought currently. In fact, on the news at night they have been showing wildfires/homes burning and mandatory evacuation areas. We haven't noticed any difference in the parks due to the drought.

I was in the WDWCP durring that drought. One morning the grass fires were so close I couldn't see the apartment building across the street because the smoke was so thick. It was kind of scary. I lived at Chatahm right by Downtown Disney. The parks were closed for a few hours that morning, but all opened up by noon.

The fireworks were never cancelled, however all the fountains were drained all season.

At this time I don't think the drought is bad enough to cancel the fireworks, but it has happened before.

We are currently in a drought (my orange tree is dying, no matter how much I water it), and there are lots of fires, there's been one burning for a while I think in the Lakeland area (about 75 miles from disney). In the past fireworks don't seem to be an issue. High wind, and thunderstorms have, which in August may be more of an issue. Soon afternoon storms will kick in, and I hope we'll get some rain. Hurricane season can bring some rain too, that starts next month.

Florida drought raises fire fears
Central Florida is suffering through a severe dry spell. Brush fires in Volusia and Brevard counties are chewing up acres of dry foliage. It appears that there are concerns about flammability at the theme parks, as well. Mike Scopa reports that Cinderellabration has not been firing the pyrotechnics at the end of the show, and that there are many new sprinklers along the track of the Walt Disney World Railroad to wet down the dry plants and trees. It is unknown whether nightly fireworks might be affected if the drought worsens.

Thanks for the responses. I guess if things start to get cancelled-this board will be the first to know so will stay tuned. :firefight

Just wanted to add that it HAS happened before. When we had the really bad brush fires a few years ago, ALL theme parks canceld fireworks for the summer (4th of July and everything). Disney does spray down the back area at MK to try and prevent fires, but they still occur, more frequently than most people would think. Anyway, just wanted to say that yes they will cancel the fireworks if it get to bad, but at this time there has been no talks of doing so.

I saw them spraying the area around MK the other day using big tanker trucks. They've also cut what appear to be fire breaks in some of the brush behind MK. I don't think they will cancel the fireworks unless things get much worse.

Unless things are really backwards by July or August the drought should be a thing of the past, I heard WET season officially starts May 21 and daily afternoon storms will run through at least September and should take care of the drought.

:woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

We have been having really bad fires here, the halls of our condo are filled with the smell and it's hazy, however we can't even see the fires from our area. Fireworks are still happening as far as I know, they were Friday. MK sprays lots of water each night to wet the areas, I know, gotten wet before during high winds the mist blows off the backs of some of the ride buildings.

Big storm moving through today (5-9-06)

Should literally hit WDW in the next half hour. (7:30-8:00am)

This should help a lot, but lets hope there are no major lightning strikes, this can be very bad!
