Will the oil spill affect VB??

We are headed there in July and I am starting to worry about it!!

You are of course asking a question that is impossible to answer since God isn't a regular poster here! ;)

Maybe...maybe not.

The only way it could would be if the loop current carried up the coast.
Here's the latest on that.

http://www.tcpalm.com/news/2010/may/21/possible-change-in-loop-current-could-keep-oil/

I'd suggest you don't worry about what you can't control. Personally, I'd keep my reservation until and IF this becomes an actual issue.

HTH

We're going the very end of June, and we decided to stay with that reservation. It really is a tough call. I hope we're doing the right thing. Best wishes to you as you try to decide.

i hope not.

this is very sad. what is wrong with those in charge?! reference
to how little problem~solving they have done. [ i hope they have to pay
every family, worker along the gulf coast & any other they damaged.]

this isn't genius type of a problem. though there isn't any excuse
not to have anticipated this type of problem from the start.

where's a plumber? i can't understand why they couldn't "cave
in"...behind the broken pipe from the start? or why not pulled the
piped & fill in the hole. who came up with putting a goofy building
on top in the first place?! [ that's about like trying to cover a
broken water main in your house with a mop bucket-heck the bucket
would've had more success.] so they install this crazy pipe without
any cut off values closer to the insertion area?! if i was on the jury,
they have no defense, they would pay for this!

i hope everyone on the jury is a shrimp lover!

Indeed, this is very sad. Maybe this will be the thing that causes us to REALLY think first before DRILL HERE - DRILL NOW thinking catches on.

I don't think they can just pull the pipe... It may be another mile under the sea floor... who knows? I think the only way they will be able to stop this is to detonate an explosive next to the pipe and cause it to crush and collapse, and seal.

Oh, the tangled webs we weave....

why do you make this political every single time this comes up?

I am a drilling engineer for Exxon, and this not not something as simple as pulling the pipe or putting dynamite next to the pipe to close it. The amount of pressure coming out of the pipe would make collapsing it nearly impossible. Despite what you might hear on tv, everything that can be done to close the well is being done. The only way the well will get sealed is when they finished drilling the relief well to take pressure of of the leaking well, once the pressure is down they can close the well. And yes BP will be paying a lot of people (rightfully so), but all of the fishermen that are not fishing right now are actually make much more money contracting with BP doing clean up work. I know that this is not the most popular thing to hear, but it is what it is. As far as drill here drill now, I guess it just really depends upon what America can stand to pay for gas and and home electricity. If we were to stop drill in the U.S. OPEC would be able to raise the price of oil the levels never seen before, and $10 per gallon gas would be the norm. I know many people right now will say that the price would not matter for safety of the environment, but that would change as soon as the prices were real. I'm sorry to rant, but everyone just needs to look at both sides if the issue.

Getting back to the original question, I wouldn't worry about your trip to VB. The worst case scenario is that you cannot swim in the ocean (and your photographs of the water won't be as pretty), but you can still have a wonderful time at the resort. Don't worry about something you cannot control. Enjoy yourself!

David -- thank you for posting!
No matter how anyone wants to cut it...we..by our own actions each individually do hold some responsibility for this....you were not ranting.

Thanks.

Personally, I would start thinking of a back up plan. We had ressies for VB in October, and we decided to just go to Disney this year. We can go to Vero any other year and I personally don't want my DD's first trip to the coast to be hampered in any way. My ideal vacation doesn't include making oil-sandcastles or burying her with an oil-mermaid tail.

Sure, it may be 100% fine, but I'm not willing to take my chances with it this year.

Good Luck, whatever you decide!!

We are going in July and are keeping our reservation. There are plenty of things to do that although it would be sad not to go in the water we are still going to go.

It looks like it is going to come closer now to VB!!
