Will the NEW Art of Animation Resort have any DVC units?

I read today that a new "Art of Animation Resort" will be built at WDW... it says that it will be geared towards families... Will this house any DVC Units? Any other thoughts?

I don't think so. Disney wants to keep the DVC resorts on par with the deluxe resorts, not the values.

A number of years ago DVC did consider adding a DVC component at the unfinished POP buildings. As with many things, it never went beyond the discussion phase and is not a likely addition at this point.

So, it sounds like this new resort may be the solution they found for using the unfinished Pop Century buildings. The description says the Art of Animation resort will be located adjacent to Pop... but will also have suites that include living rooms available.

So does this mean they are going back to work on the other half of Pop Century and just naming it something else. Wonder if they are going to start fresh or already use the buildings they have in place. Last pics I saw showed some of those buildings somewhat done. Still it would take some work to bring them "online". Lots of work actually. I just don't see Disney not using them but hey they did not have an issue tearing down part of Contemporary to make BLT. Any one know more???

I think they'll be using the shells of what they had built before the downturn. Not much in the way of "finishing" touches had ever been done by the looks from when I've passed by that part of the property.

They are going to ruin the theme of the area. So much for the hour glass shaped lake and the "generation gap" bridge. Oh well, at least they are getting rid of that huge unfinished eye sore.

I concur. Perhaps they think the Fantasyland expansion will cover these additional guests? Hmmmm......

I wouldn't worry about that. I don't think anyone has every said "Man, I want to go to Disney but there aren't any hotels available anywhere in Orlando/Kissimee. I guess I'll just stay home then." If people are coming to Disney, there's always places to stay. If they add 1 or drop 10, they'll still be room for everyone.

The way I understood the article, they will be utilizing the unfinished Pop buildings AND building new ones.

I am curious to see how this will affect DVC sales though, since many people take the plunge due to the need for larger accommodations due to family size.

I like the theme they choose. Theming is one reason many families like the All Star Movies and Pop Century.

It sounds like Disney is already planning ahead for the Fantasyland expansion. Fantasyland has always been geared toward small children (and the young at heart). The marketing for Fantasyland will be geared toward families with small children.

Also, isn't Disney/Pixar supposed to release a Cars 2 movie in the next couple years?

I wouldn't worry about that. I don't think anyone has every said "Man, I want to go to Disney but there aren't any hotels available anywhere in Orlando/Kissimee. I guess I'll just stay home then." If people are coming to Disney, there's always places to stay. If they add 1 or drop 10, they'll still be room for everyone.

I understand your point but I also think that people who stay on-site generally spend more time in the parks than people who stay off-site. Yes, the off-site guest may spend the entire day from rope-drop to kiss goodnight but they also most likely do not do this every day of their trip.

majority of family suites (think the ones @ the values currently cost more than the standard moderate rooms). It will be interesting to see where they price point and whether the resort will share checkin/amenities w/Pop

apparently, the DVC lite version that was rumored (value form of DVC with moderate studios) isn't going to happen

Seems to me the new resort with lots of suites (a big step up from single motel-type rooms) fits the bill for folks who don't want to commit to DVC, or who don't want to book available DVC resorts at cash prices, but who need more space. I agree the price points for the new suites will be really interesting to see.

I wonder how this will impact those who want to rent points from DVC members. Many of those who have rented did so because they couldn't afford Disney prices for the size of accommodations they wanted (larger families, etc.). With a moderately priced Disney resort that offers the size and amenities they want for the same price as renting points, I suspect many will prefer to do business directly with Disney... to get free dining and other special offers and also to avoid any trust issues involved with sending money to a stranger to rent points.

It is very doubtful that it will share check-in facilities with Pop Century, the most it may share would be the inlet road/guard shack. I would expect guests could walk between the resort using the existing bridge. There is already a food court/check-in building in place from the unfinished Pop Century area, it only needs re-theming and interior finish out.

I was actually in hopes they would use the area as a deluxe DVC resort, keeping the "decades" theme, and adding a table service restaurant to the food court area. There is a lot of nice building theming that could have been done from those decades, like Victorian themed building clusters, art deco, etc. I like the general location of the Pop Century property.

Since the Art of Animation and Pop Century are still sort of connected, I wonder if they'll re-theme Pop Century to match. It wouldn't be an overly expensive rehab and Pop Century is several years old now.

I think this may hurt DVC a little. I probably wouldn't have bought DVC if I knew this was being built. Finding an affordable place to stay for our family was a big factor in our DVC decision. I'm still glad we have DVC but our large family/lack of hotel space was a big deciding factor!
