I just started looking into buying the Kodak z612 a few weeks ago, and at that time the price at Best Buy was $250. Now, it is on sale this week for only $190. This is a good deal, but I was wondering from past experience, has the price of a current Kodak model drastically dropped when a new model comes out? I know that the Kodak z712 will be coming out sometime this month, so should I hold off and wait to buy the Kodak z612? Thanks for all your help!

I know nothing about those particular models, but will give you some of my past industry observations. At the online places, they always hit the market at about full retail and then drop off about a month later. Depending on the popularity, it will fluctuate some during its lif cycle. About the time a replacement is introduced, the price seems to freeze until the new model has been out for a couple of weeks and then it will usually lower some more. It then usu. takes another small reduction but eventually ends up back at retail or even higher once the supply is really low.

This is not a rule though. Different things can happen and I have even seen prices go up after a replacement is introduced. This also does not take sales in to account. That one is currently $20 less than Buydig(usu. lowest online reputable price), and not all that expensive to begin with, so I bet that even if it does go down, it will not go by much. If you really want it, I say go ahead and get it. If you have the self control to not open and use it, you could buy from them and hold on to it until about when the return policy expires to see if a cheaper offer comes along. I do not have that amount of willpower myself.

Kevin,

Thanks for your help. I will probably end up buying it this week and like you, I don't have the willpower to not open it. Now, I just need to see if I can price match it at Circuit City, so I can watch the price for 30 days and hope the price will go lower.

The Z612 is currently on Amazon for $195, free shipping. They have a 30-day price guarantee so if the price drops (you have to watch for the price drop) you just call them and they'll refund you the difference.

Personally, unless you're in a rush for this camera it may be worth waiting for the Z712 to drop in price after it's first released, it has Image Stabilization which I don't believe the Z612 has. That's a great feature since it will help prevent blurry shots when using the zoom (unless you don't mind using a tripod). The Canon S2/S3's have been very popular in part because of this feature.
