We are getting a Wii for our girls for Christmas- we will have 2 controlers- what else is needed for it- should we get 2 more, maybe a couple of steering wheels, sports pack, light saber things... anything else and what gamed are good for begonners to the system? Thanks!

Harley Quinn has a thread on this somewhere

Anyway
We use the two controllers the most
We also use the nunchucks (sp?) for a few games(boxing is the one that comes to mind -but I know there are more)
The only thing we use the steering wheel for is Mario Kart

So what games are you getting? That will help decide what to get.

There's a great thread on the Budget Board with tons of Wii information (not money related - games, accessories, etc.).

I personally see the sports pack stuff as a waste of money - they don't do anything but clip onto the controller - certainly are not needed. Most games that use special devices come with them (like Mario Cart wheels or the gun zapper thing that comes with a game). The only thing you really NEED are the basic controllers and nunchucks - the other stuff is just visual more than anything.

I have had a Wii for the past 15 months. I bought it for my girls age 12 & 15. I suggest that you look at the games that you will be getting and then get the appropriate controllers. There is a icon of what game needs what type of controller on the backside of the game on the top corner. ex. Mariokart uses the main controller (it is optional to have the wheel).

Have fun

My husband and I were just talking about this. We're getting one for my 6-yr old for Christmas. I didn't even know there were a bunch of accessories that went along w/ it. I'll have to check out the Budget Board...

I just purchases the charging station because it goes through batteries regularly. I was getting tired of it.

I second the charging station. We put our charger right next to the Wii, so that as soon as we are done playing we can stick it on the charger and have it ready to go for the next time around.

We only have four games at the moment--Wii Sports, Wii Play (which I have to admit, we bought it solely for the second Wiimote it comes with), Wii Fit (which I LOVE) and The Price Is Right (which DH bought for himself). I'm kinda hoping to get Guitar Hero: Aerosmith Edition for Christmas and maybe the Jillian Micheals fitness game.

Oh lord TPIR is a hoot.:lmao:

You use one controller and each person takes their turn. Just like in the real TPIR, you have a contestant's row and you have to try and guess the price of the item being displayed. If neither one of you gets it, then the person who got the closest wins that one. Then you are given a choice of games to pick from. After one pricing game each, then it's time for the big wheel and whoever gets the higher price gets to go first during the Showcase Showdown.

I'm not a big TPIR fan, but I don't mind playing this with DH because I think it's so funny.:lmao: We were playing yesterday and I ended up playing the game where you have a little mountain climber going up the hill. I was like, "OH NO HE"S GONNA FALL!!"
Which of course he did. Yo day la dee hoo hoo hoo! He fell right off the cliff.:lmao:

We just got our Wii last week. We have Wii Sports & Tiger Woods All Star Golf. My son (7) & I have been bowling like crazy. My husband loves the Tiger Woods game. All we have now are two Wiimotes & 1 nunchuck. We only use that for boxing. I'm dying for that TPIR game!!!!! That's on my christmas list and my son wants Wii Music.

I agree, don't by the accessories unless you have a game where you really need them. The only extra thing we have is colored rubber covers for the Wii remotes, not really necessary either lol.

As far as games, I'm not sure of your kids ages, but DS is 10. We just bought the Disney Think Fast game (after reading about it here) it's a lot of fun for kids and adults (you can set the difficulty level). Wii Fit it a lot fun and they're coming out with more games where you use the balance board. DS likes Order Up (kind of similar to Cooking Mama, where you cook different foods). He likes SuperSmash Brothers or whatever it's called. The game we play the most is probably Guitar Hero though.

Thanks everyone! I'll have to look for the other thresd (sorry) so far I ahve gotten Mario Kart, some monkey game and the Wii sports pack tha came with the extra remote- the girls are 7, 5 and almost 2 (she won't be playing it) and DH is 34 ;) --TPIR sounds funny!

With Christmas coming, I've been looking at Amazon.com and reading game reviews and have changed my mind. I do not want the Jillian Micheals fitness game anymore..it got so many bad reviews it actually made me change my mind. Instead, I am now hoping to get My Fitness Coach which is cheaper and better, from what I understand. :)

You are going to have so much fun with the Wii. I agree with the remote charging station. It will save you a lot of money on batteries. And the Wii Fit. I've had mine since October and I just love it. We have a ton of games and the only accessories we have are the nuchuck and 4 remotes, wii fit board and 2 steering wheels. You don't need the steering wheels but for smaller kids it help them to control the car better. I also have a link here from nintendo for fee remote covers. They are offered by nintendo and you can get up to 4, but you are going to need the serial number from your Wii to get them. They have a lot of games that are so much fun: Game party, CArnival games with mini golf, big brain academy are a few. We tend to get the games that are more for families so that we can all play.

Your gonna to love the Wii once you get it.

No problem. I suggested TPIR for DH who LOVES that show. He was so MAD when Drew Carey took over for Bob Barker, but now he loves him.:lmao:

We also have:
Wii Fit--love it

Wii Play-bought it for the extra controller tbh. I don't like the games at all although the mad cow game is pretty funny, as is the shooting game.

AMF Bowling Superstars which DH bought at work on Black Friday. It was in the ad as one of their $10 Wii games for that weekend and I figured if we didn't like it, then no biggie. It's a HOOT..I love the different characters you can choose--cowgirl, rock star girl, Elvis:rotfl: and the choices of places to bowl at are great. The first time I played, I played against an Elvis clone and ended up laughing so hard I couldn't throw the ball.

And of course, THe Price Is Right, which I've already reviewed.

I have also played Sonic Goes To The Olympics (the local library has it for their Wii) and it's meh. It's not great, but it's not horrible either.

budmonster--I think the Wiimote jackets are being included now, at least with the controllers you get with the system. Ours came with clear jackets, although you can purchase colored jackets and recently I've seen an accessory pack which has different attachments (baseball bat, tennis racket and a golf club) for the Wiimotes. I've also seen attachable boxing gloves for the Wiimote and numchuck.

Definetely get a charging station.
Here are a few game suggestions
Mario and Sonic at the Olympics
Mario Kart
Williams Pinball
Rock Band
Mercury Meltdown
