The Disney site says it will be closed for refurbishment Jan 2. Isn't this still a busy time? I thought that they closed major rides after the crowds. Didn't they do work on Splash Mtn just last year? :sad1: :worried:

I would think that right after new years day the parks will be very slow.

Jan. 2 (or so) until President's Day in Feb. is one of the slowest times of the year for attendance at WDW.

We were there Jan 2 to Jan 7 last year and it was as busy as when we went in June!

They need to do maintanence at some point. And although Jan. is no longer the slow time it used to be its still slower than most of the year, even if by just a little. But it still stinks none the less.

So that it's all fresh and ready when we get there February 3rd. Sorry to those who will be missing out but I feel a bit......gleeful!! :Pinkbounc

January is a ghost town. There aren't many times when it is more empty.

I plan on hitting it the day we leave...the 28th. Do they usually hit their refurb. deadlines on time? Thanks!

Yes, they do.

Other than marathon weekend, there are usually not many people in the parks in January. This would seem to be a good time to close down a few rides for refurbs.

We've visited during January for many years. As others have indicated, crowds are practically non-existant.

Better not go the first week of January then!

We were there then too, and I could not believe how crowded it was the whole week. I expect the same for next year also, since New Years Day falls on a Monday, and most schools in the southeast have Christmas break til the second week of January.

I totally agree. We were there last year for the exact same dates and were extremely disappointed after reading the ghost town threads for January. I think the crowds were all due to the marathoners coming in early. As soon as the marathon was over I heard it was practically empty. If we try January again it won't be until the middle or end of January.

We are heading for Marathon weekend number three and expect the same bigger crowds as last year. Last year they split the half and full marathons to different days opening the race up to thousands more. The 5k was also so much larger and now they have moved it to a third day. Magic Kingdom on the 3rd was as crowded as any summer day. We opted for the Universal parks after that. And yes, we are from the south and for the second year in a row we will return to school late - January 7th. This has happened in 2002 and 2006, and both trips to Disney were met with big crowds. Both times we went for the entire week. In 2005 we were not out that week, so we only went down for the long weekend to run. By this time last year we had a great rate on a room (DTD). This year the same rooms are almost 50% higher - so they are not having a problem filling them. Unless I HAD to go that week, I would never book a January trip until after the marathon weekend.

ps Last year we went to MK on the 3rd because Buzz Lightyear was closing the next day. Several other things were closed too. Popular time for ride refurbishment.

past couple of years, most major refurb started after Xmas, assume due to lower crowds most of month = less disappointed guests.

my DS will be there on honeymoon, disappointed that he'll be missing SplMt. Had read (somewhere that RNR would be closed too but, it's not listed on allears??)
