Why would MS have trouble downsizing us from 2BR to 1BR?

This was something I found interesting: I spoke with MS today, and did a whole bunch of other stuff including banking and making ressies for next April, etc.

Then I came to our November ressies; since our guests leave one night before we do, I was thinking on the final night we would simply downsize us from our BWV std view 2BR to the same 1BR, thinking that of course, they would simply take the studio portion of our lockoff, and rent that to someone else. But I was instead informed that I would need to waitlist for a 1BR std view that last night! (needless to say, I kept our 2BR and waitlisted for the 1BR). This seems strange to me. :tilt:

Does anyone have any theories as to why we wouldn't simply break up the lockoff on that last night and MS can rent out the studio portion, leaving us with the 1BR? Do you think I ought to call back and see if another CM has a different opinion on this? Ideas anyone?

 :scratchin

Sense you will be breaking one reservation into two, there will be no certainty that you will be staying in your same unit. You could be moved to another unit on the other side of the resort. All you can do is request staying in the same unit. For example, if another member books a 2-BR lockoff and and the only one the resort has for that night is the unit your in. You may be moved to a dedicated 1-BR (not sure if BWV has these) while another guest moves into the 2-BR lock-off unit.

I would think it's because other DVC members are already waitlisted for both standard 1 BR's and Studios. Therefore you would have to get in line behind them.

But the thing is, I still have the ressie for the 2BR. At present, BWV has no std view availability for that night in studio, 1BR or 2BR. It would seem to me that if they were to make our 2BR unit into a 1BR for that last night, that would give BWV a new std view studio worth of availablity to hand out to someone on the waitlist for that night.

I'm sure it has something to do with how the reservations system works, but it just strikes me as doing what I would like would be advantageous for all involved. :teeth: But I guess the reservations system sees a whole bunch of other folks in line ahead of me for a 1BR, so...

When your 2BR reservation gets canceled it would give MS a standard studio AND a 1BR to rent out that night. They would have to re-book you into a 1BR but there would already be people on the list ahead of you for that room. Those rooms would go first to those members.

I found out that for some reason, when you change a reservation in any way, they cancel and re-book. I made standard view reservations at BWV with the intent to make them Preferred in August with points from Vero Beach. When I told that to the CM, she said they would have to cancel first and see if there was a Boardwalk view available at the 7 month window. Go figure!

This is place to keep people from booking 2 bedroom units and downgrading at the last minute, and having DVC having TONS of studios available. It's in fairness to all members so people won't tie up larger units and then downgrade later, leaving smaller units that may not be able to be used by points. If you have a reservation, and try to change it, you have to cancel the ressie and rebook using current inventory. Since there is a waitlist for a 1 bedroom standard, the first person on the waitlist has first priority to that ressie, not the person with the 2 bedroom who canceled.

My ignorance here: can every 2BR be broken down to a 1BR and a Studio? I though there were some dedicated 2BR.

Boardwalk does not have any dedicated 2 bedrooms, they are all lockoffs. They do have many dedicated studios & 1 bedrooms. All 5 times I stayed at BWV I had a dedicated 1 bedroom.

I think this rule is to prevent someone from holding a 2 bedroom until they decided if they want a 1 bedroom or a 2 bedroom while others are waiting on the wait list.

As pointed out, this is a case of DVC cancelling what you have and rebooking OR wait listing what you want. And this is as it should be for a number of reasons including the fact that you would essentially tie up three rooms at one time. If the wait list comes through, you're set. But you still won't be guaranteed of staying in the same unit. I'd keep the 2 BR and guarantee of staying in the same unit.

It can help to remember that there is no such thing as making a "change". You always cancel and re-book. Sometimes it helps to walk through any anticipated change to see what effect it has on your points.

For awhile people were booking the lock-offs and then taking their time to decide what type of room they really wanted studio, 1 bedroom or 2 bedroom. However, this plan can be upset by a case such as you encountered. If someone else is on the wait list for the room, you have to get in line behind them.

Thx for the responses and explanations as to the possible reasoning. These make sense to me, so I guess I am satified. Heck, I have the points (it's only 6 points difference), and had booked the last night in a 2BR just to maintain consistancy. But oddly enough, I actually expected to be able to downsize if needed. We'll see how the waitlist works for us, since the night in question is the final night of Food & Wine; we may just have to make due with a 2BR the whole stay. How ever will we bear it ;)

Pam OKW,

I just made a reservation at WLV for Easter 2005. I was going to book 2 studios because of the rules you state, (I think our friends are the type to cancel on us) but when I told MS, she offered to book me in a 2 bedroom Lock Off, "because then you can just cancel either the studio or the 1 bedroom portion if need be."

Is this just another case of MS giving me wrong info? Easter Break is super busy, so I'm sure I'd have a hard time if I had to cancel and rebook at say 31 days out! Should I call and tell them what I was told? I'd be pretty angry if I did not read these boards & had to rely on MS's wrong info! Hmm, maybe I should just try to get 2 studio's. I'm confused. But if you can't believe the words out of MS's mouth directly, what good is it?

You should call and discuss with them. DVC, and Disney in general, is notorious for not consistently following their own rules. I know it's happened before but I believe the rule as stated earlier in this thread is the official stance.

Dean,

Thanks. I am sure you are right. I have been reading this board since 1999 & that is what I have always read here, thus I planned on booking 2 studios. It is just frustrating to hear from the horses mouth something I did not think was right anyway. Just venting....sorry.

You can "change" a reservation by droping a day or more, regardless of current availability. However, if you change unit types, dates, etc. it is considered a new booking subject to availability and waitlists, if they apply.

MS will have to cancel that night and rebook you.

The 2br you have will go to the next person on the waitlist as a 2br, or 1br and studio.
