I have been wondering how to explain this to my 4 year old as well. That is if he isn't afraid of them. I would love to hear what everyone has to say about this.
I guess they all have laryngitis won't fly huh? I really am not sure about this one...my dd is still afraid of them and even if she wasn't she is non verbal so wouldn't be able to ask me about them talking.
simple the princesses are real! and the cartoon characters had to give up something to be able to come off the film strip! Like Airel did to become human!

LOL. We should be happy that they don't
talk. Otherwise the lines that are now 1 hr.
long would be 2hrs. Alas, we would then
have to answer the question... Why does
their mouth not move when they talk???
So, I think we're better off now, just having
to come up with some little white lie.

You could do something along the lines of "Mickey doesn't want to make the kids that don't speak English sad because he can't talk to them so he doesn't talk to anybody."

We're going in 9 days, and my 5 year old has never seen a character in his life (except for me, of course! ). Out of nowhere a few days ago, he told me, "Daddy, if I see 2 or 3 Mickeys at Disney World that won't scare me because I know it's just men in Mickey costumes." BUT, I asked him again just now and he said if he meets Mickey Mouse or Buzz Lightyear they are the real deal, not people in costumes. When I told him they won't be able to talk to him, he asked me why. I had just read the post by Spinning (above) and ran that by him, and he bought it. It made perfect sense to him. GOOD WORK! Your idea has now been laboratory tested! I may not be mad, but I'm a scientist.
I told DD that Mickey and the gang can't talk to everyone or they would loose their voices. I told her it wouldn't be fair to talk to some people and not everyone. Then the above question came up about princesses. I told her you had to be really, really special to meet the princesses and not everyone gets to see them- since they see fewer people they can talk to the ones they do see without loosing their voices. Then she asks why Mickey and etc. can talk during parades- I told her that since they don't want to loose their voices to talk to every single person, they just talk to everyone at one time during parades. So far she's bought it. However, she is about to turn 6 and I'm guessing the next time we travel to WDW- Dec. 06 probably- she'll be 7 and I'm afraid this will all change. The above worked for 4 trips though!!!
DS was 3 our trip this past Dec. and he kept on and on at Tigger at Crystal Palace "Can you talk? Can you talk?" Tigger just bounced around him and he finally stopped. That was the only time it came up with him. I know it will later on though!
My 5 yo DD knows they're not real as well. Cheap costumed characters at other events gave it away when she was about 3. She could see a face through the eye holes. So we told her they were pretend like puppets but the princesses and other such characters were real. She still has a blast with them and believes in all the usual childhood things like the Easter Bunny, Santa and Tooth Fairy etc.
