Why should I have to justify myself?

Hi All,

I'm sure a lot of ppl here that love Disney as much as I do have the same issue as I do. People are always asking if I'm tired of going and that it's stupid to go so many times and that I should go somewhere new. I feel that if I enjoy something, why should I have to change that solely for the purpose of change. Personally, I like knowing that if I'm going to spend a lot of money on a vacation, I know what I'll be getting in return. It's not just about going on rides or even the parks themselves, it's the whole experience that people don't understand. I've been going twice a year for the last 4 years and I realize that it is a lot but why not enjoy what I love. Do any of you always feel the need to have to justify yourself to friends or family? There are a lot worse things money can buy you in life. As long as it's not effecting you financially, I say have fun and do what you love. Love to hear opinions.

Thanks

Why is there any need to justify to anyone else what one does with their own vacation and their own money?

You don't HAVE to change anything just because someone else thinks you should.

When they tell you that you should go somewhere else, just say "No, I like it there." That's it. You don't need to say anything else.

And I never will, but the questions and comments will always come.

I get it all the time too. And I've stopped justifying and explaining. When people ask/comment, I simply say, "yep!" What's left to say? If they want to ramble on, I tune them out and thinking about other things...such as planning my trip.

Then ignore them. If someone is rude they are not going to stop being rude. Just say you like it and you are going and that is that.

Ask them if they pay your bills? Unless someone pays my mortgage, they can't have a say in how I spend my money.

I was introduced to a new co-worker yesterday who saw my Disney jackt, my Piglet paper clip holder and lots of other Disney things in my cube. Co-worker, "I love the Disney stuff!". Other co-worker (doing the introductions), "yeah, she goes once a year." Me, "actually, it's more than once a year." My next door cube co-worker, "yep, it's like every holiday weekend." Me, "yep, every three day weekend we are there." New co-worker, "Cool!"

I don't justify. I'm 52 years old, my husband is 54, our only child is grown and married with two kids of his own and lives 800 miles away. I justify nothing to anyone. It's MY life.

I get it too. My mother thinks I am becomming obsessive, and I recognize the legitamacy of her concern as I do tend to be that way, but so what? It's not hurting anything. I'm not going into debt or anything over it. I'll spend my vacation money how I choose, and I just happen to love theme parks and Disney in particular. I do other stuff too, but the World is getting to be a regular thing (the cheap airfair that started last year helps though!). Just do what you enjoy.

We average 1-2 trips a year and I get the same questions and worse. I have some in my office that say "I bet you have tons of debt because of your expensive Disney trip." I tell them the truth that I don't have any debt and that I save all year so I can go to Disney, pay cash and enjoy myself. I tell them I love Disney and I have done other vacations over the years and no where else tops Disney. We live at the beach so we can go there anytime, DH and I grew up in the mountains and grandparents live there so we visit often, and other theme parks just don't hold a candle to Disney. I think many of the questions and comments come out of jealousy. I love Disney and so does my family so as long as we can afford to go and enjoy going we will.

I'm a WDW fan and Star Trek fan...and I have always loved Aaron Sorkin's take on "fans" defending their devotion to a certain subject (through the voice of Josh Lyman) in this clip: West Wing on Star Trek

After all, you have to remember the (most agreed upon) etymology of the word 'fan' = short for fanatic (i.e. intense uncritical devotion). Some people will not understand why you choose to go 8 times in four years instead of backpacking in Asia. I don't understand how civic pride is attached to what hockey players they decide to hire in this city.

Believe me though, I've been there. Still am there with my MIL would would much prefer joining us on a three week vacation of golf and a pool in the desert somewhere...or roughing it in the mountains. Maybe it's a blessing in disguise that I suck at golf.

Do any of you always feel the need to have to justify yourself to friends or family? No. And I really think that you're overthinking this. You don't say why people think it's "stupid", but it sounds like you think it's a financial thing. If that's the case simply say that you work/save very hard to afford it and that they needn't concern themselves with your finances.

This.

Many of my friends love camping. I've tried it a few times and I don't think you can pay me enough to get me to sleep in a tent or a camper outside ...... I've never asked them to justify why they do.

My response to the Why Do You Keep Going Back questions: Because we like it.

End of. :)

Oh I'm right there with you. I'm getting pretty tired of the comments, to be honest with you. Even the people who have seemed to support our Disney trips will make comments here and there. I think it's funny how the people who have the biggest problem with it are the ones who also have the SAME vacation every year too... Except they're sitting on a beach at the Jersey shore.

:rotfl2:

So true.

I think there are a couple of things going on when people say things like that. One, they are being nosy about your financial business. Second, I think it's a form of snobbery. Finally, some people think Disney is for kids and think it's weird that adults like it. Regardless, it's all about boundaries. It's amazing what some people think they have the right to comment on.

It's usually the ones that have never been to WDW.

I go to WDW a lot...at least twice a year. This past year? Sept (Vero Beach and WDW), Nov, Dec, Jan (just an overnight..already in Fl so drove north), this June, and then again in Nov. so, obviously I'm always being asked why. My response? 'you go to the same cottage at the lake every year' or ' you go to Vegas all the time'.

We went to Disney in November, then returned for marathon weekend in February this year. When I mentioned it to any friends of mine, they looked at me strange, saying things like "You were just there??" And finally after so many snobby replies I'd give them a smile and say yup:)

As much as I love Disney parks, I am not comfortable going to the same place on each vacation. That's why I've visited 9 different Disney parks so far.

I know families who always vacation at the same location every year. (Every year to WDW, the same lakefront cottage, the same time-share in Hawaii, the same ski condo, the same campground, etc.). I find it fascinating and a bit sad. Kind of like a kid who never moves out of their parents basement.

Personally, I have had some kind of Disney experience every year for the past decade, but I've also experienced a lot of other things. I try to alternate a "new to me" experience between trips to WDW or Disneyland.

By all means continue visiting WDW as often as you can, but don't expect everyone to love that about you. Our tastes and desires are unique to each person, thank goodness.

We go every year, too, and we catch it from family and friends. I personally don't care what anyone thinks about how I spend my vacation time or money. As a PP mentioned, some ppl go to the beach every single year, or to the mountains every single year, or spend a fortune on season passes to see their favorite sports team - so IMO going to WDW annually is no different than that. :thumbsup2
