Why is VMK stuck?

My boys got interested in VMK on our trip to the world last week. We did all the scavenger hunts, and they ended up with a huge stack of cards/items they can use in the game. They signed on at the Main St. site. At home, when they try to go on a ride or anywhere, they can't click on anything. We have AOL. They are using my husband's control panel, so the kid blocks won't come up. Any advice? They'd really like to play this game. They are big-time Runscape players, so they are familiar with internet games. It really frustrated my 11-year-old.
