Why is my carpet crunchy?

We decided we don't really have the money right now to replace the carpeting downstairs, so I'm shampooing the crap out of whats there now. Now that it has dried, it's crunchy. Did I do something wrong? Will it soften back up after we walk on it for a while?

Maybe the glue dried up?

It didn't get rinsed well, is my guess. The dried shampoo is making it stiff and crunchy. If you can, I'd use the shampooer again with just water, no shampoo.

In all seriousness, that is what happens to my carpet after I shampoo it too. It is just soap residue and it will soften up very soon after. Rinse it again if you can. Also, beware, it will dirty up again sooner than before after you shampoo. Not sure why.

DS is a professional carpet cleaner - he agrees with the others that say it is soap/shampoo residue. You need re-clean with just water to rinse it.
pjilla - the reason it seems to get dirty faster is because the soap residue that is left behind "attracts" the dirt. We alway used to clean our carpets ourselves before he got this job. Now we have him clean them - the come out MUCH cleaner, and stay clean longer. I guess it really pays to have a professional do some things!!!

Luvdzny, I told my DH I wanted it professionally cleaned and he said no why should we when we can do it ourselves. I had a feeling it would have been a better job. Us women should just stick to our guns when we have an intuition.
